Hello everyone I'm planning on using some renegade guardsmen in my chaos army but I don't know the rules for them. Do they follow the ig codex or do they have a different set of rules.

if anyone can give me some answers that would be great.

Thanks.

Best bet is using the Siege of Vraks list.

or could just run them as guard to save getting an outdated ImpArmour

You could ally them in and use the rules from the IG codex, or you could also use the cultists rules in the Chaos codex.

Well, there are at lest 3 options fo playing traitor guard force :

- codex IG, maybe with some CSM alies

- As said above, use one of 3 Siege of Vraks list. All are quite outdated, but overall best catches spirit of old L&D force from "eye of terror"

- go fan-dexing, and write your own rules. Just do not except them to be widely accepted :p .

Assuming you've ruled the Vraks list out, and that simply using guard models to represent cultists isn't going to cut it, you're going to be needing an IG codex.

You can just literally lift IG units from the 'dex as-is, use stock models and have at it or you can theme the army so they have some kind of connection to the chaos marines you're using. You can tweak the IG list quite well to suit your preferences and needs,

I'd pick a Primaris Psyker as my LatD leader as either a Possessed Psyker, Malevolent sorceror, a Psychic Apocalypse or some form of unbound Daemonhost.
Because I love Ogryn I'd be inclined to take them as my one HS section, immediately seconded to the protection of my Primaris (and Vice Versa if the Psychic power rolls are kind) because what villain doesn't surround himself with obedient and loyal muscle?

Troops wise I'd plump for either a couple of large mobs of guardsmen to represent your generic crazed follower with a gun. You could represent unreliable mutants with Penal Legion (I've seen them chow through Terminators and the like).

Fast attack begs for a unit of rough riders to represent some kind of fast-moving mutant or some kind rebel cavalry.

HS would probably be one of the artillery pieces, a deathstrike suits the idea of crazy chaos followers (with the entire force being the escorting throng for the weapon) as you'd have to be pretty mad/desperate to unleash an ICBM at enemies 20 feet away. But any of the tanks would do well as a captured or looted tank or some kind of cobbled together civilian vehicle with guns welded on.

I suppose the emphasis here is to make the army as visually distinct as possible from a loyal IG army. You could opt to represent a disciplined and drilled army of human chaos worshippers of course.

or controversial option

use them as grots as an ork army
use mutants (convert) as ork boyz

still option to ally in csm and ig

That's actually a very cool idea. Massive units of slaves (grots) herded into battle by FW Renegade Enforcers (http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Chaos/CHAOS_RENEGADES/RENEGADE_MILITIA_ENFORCERS.html) (Runtherds)

Or just use the 3rd Eye of Terror list. Thats what I do.

With the addition of cultists ma really maybe the chaos marine codex?
Cultists for your gaurdsmen/mutants, spawn for your bigger mutants, some deamon engines for the funky deamon engine stuff.
If you really want to get back to the lost and the damned list ally in some deamons or gaurd for the more recently turned.

If you don't want to do that the servents of slaughter and the nurgle gaurd lists from the vraks are also pretty fun

ALL of this -is brilliant. there's enough wacky stuff in the IG list.

I'd add a unit of sanctioned psykers, use the flagellant model with the guy in stocks to represent that these are people herded into battle to make minds go pop.

Ratlings, could be some kind of rat mutants using the skaven range.

Whiteshields/conscript horde for the mutants

Good luck, I love the idea.

another idea I have seen used is to have guardsman riding chaos spawn as chaos sentinels.

I too think IG is your best bet and if you don't feel the models are Chaos enough on their own, ally up some CSM, but don't let them..."take over"...your list
