View Full Version : 'CONSECRO' - The 'Iron Souls' Dreadnought project...

+++ NEW UPDATE NOV 22 +++

Hello people...
It's been some time since i've posted anything, since i've been very busy with several projects (including writing Rusted (http://www.warseer.com/rusted_engine_comics) for the RustedEngine Studio section) of modelling and sculpting. One of the most important of this projects is the creation of a customized and fully converted Dreadnought for my Iron Souls army: Brother Consecro of the Third Company (if some of you are reading 'Rusted', you'll find out that this is an exclusive sneak-peek!). This project will be a highly detail dioram, showing the unleashed fury of a Dreanought.
More specifically, the project consists of the following: First, the Dreadnought (as you'll see in the pics); i've changed the legs of the original model so as to give the machine some more dynamism and to make it look like it can actually WALK! I've added the iconography of the chapter, including the Iron Souls (not finished yet) icon on the chest of the model and two scratch sculpted statues. The arms have also been converted, to give the sensation of the 'fingers' stretched out to reach some Necron scum!, and thus making the dreadnought a 'Furioso' pattern.
Secondly (and most challenging!), i've started to sculpt four servitors from scratch that will be trying to hold back the holy fury of the Dreadnought with chains. You will see that the models are being sculpted with a high level of detail (and no bits were harmed in the process of this project!).
Well, enough with this talking, and i'll show the first pics; as i develop this project further, i'll post more...

you're right, it does look like the dread can walk now! really excellent. One minor criticism; the dread looks a bit top heavy, might just be the angle of the photo though.

I've had the luxury of seeing this project come to life since early planning and sketching. And all i can say is that you never cease to amaze me with your skills, my friend... and i'm anxious to see it painted. :D

I'd love to see something like that get an official release.

I totally agree!

Is it just me, or is the stuff being put out by people on forums like these actually better than some of the stuff GW is currently releasing?

This Dread is looking simply outstanding, FreakForge, you're really showing everyone how it should be done! I love it!

In several cases I agree. The most impresive are those people totally scratch building/sculpting their models and then casting them. My hats off to those who can work with green stuff (such as this thread) because I can't.

It's suitably wierd and John Blanchey, but why would even crazy imperials have servitors holding back their troops.

But the execution is excellent.

Dammit man, you now occupy so much of my sig it's hard not to click on a link for your work.

You can find it in the "a" of Brain.

Keep these works coming and I'll dedicate a word to you :p.

Fantastic dread, really clever legs there, but the interior cog of the secondary knee that you've sculpted dips in rather a lot, might be from the miliput shrinking as it dries... Also, those little hooded figures on the top are mind bogglingly good.

The servitors are looking grand sculpture wise, but I'm not sure how they'll turn out, I'm not really very keen on servitors in general.

When I first saw the Dread I was like, "Nice Dread.".

Then I realized the "xenos" style reverse jointed legs and was like, "Very Cool Dread.".

Then it dawned on me, "Holy CRAP! That's an all plastic Furioso Dread!".

It's the sublte stuff that makes me a fan of a persons work. Keep it up. Your fans demand it.

might be from the miliput shrinking as it dries...
TG

Milliput does not shrink.

Amazing work you've done with the dread, I love every single bit of it, especially the legs, because they look like they are able to carry a dreadnought around.
Don't add any more stuff on the torso of the dreadnought though, because then it will look like it's falling backwards because of it's weight.

But anyway, can't wait to see more. Should look awesome when finished up.

Well , thanks for all the comments .
In this very moment I´m working on the servitors , so you will see some progress soon!

KayvaanShrike says:

Like RabidBunny666 says : check the Iron Souls comic! Or my signature ,... the colour scheme is quite similar to the one that the marines wear.

plasmadaemon says:

That's the biggest problem, I need to make all the dioram (including the servitors with the chains holding the Dreadnought) and only then i will be able to see if the Dread needs any more decoration or not. However, i don't think i'll add more, except purity seals and details.

Thanks to all!

Wouldn't the two leg structures collide if the dreadnought decided to lean one foot nearly vertically against something? Maybe you could sculpt little bumpers on the area where the two bits would physically collide (Plus, I think it'll look cool ;) ) ?

EDIT: Some thing goes for the top half of the legs.

Very nice modelwork.
I have to ask the same as someone else already has done in this thread though:
Why would any imperial force have restraints on any of their troops in battle?
So unless this is supposed to be a diorama over the awakening of a Dreadnought in preparation for battle, it seems a bit odd... though I must say the image I get in my head on how it will look is übercool.

Well,... I forgot to say it earlier , the servitors are holding the dread for the simple reason that the marine ( the few pieces that are inside the Dread :D ) is completely insane , is a holy berseck thing , and is no other way to make this Dread work correctly on the battlefield. That´s also the reason why I choose a ¨furioso¨ pattern , I think is a good way to represent the unstoppable rage of Consecro.

Thanks

Wow, how did you do the metal? It's fantastic :D.

TG

1- Prime the pieces of the mini that you want to make look metallic with Chaos Black.
2- Drybrushed with a mix 75/25 of Metallic Bolter and Mithril Silver ( leaving the surface very rough).
3- Washed the mini with a mix 25/25/50 of Chesnut Ink , Vermin Brown and Scorched Brown.
4- When it dries washed again.
5- Highligthed with Chainmail.

But why didn't you sprayed your dreadnought?
cheers

The reason for me not priming the miniature was that not all the parts in the Dread should be coated with the same colour (Chaos Black, for example).

Thanks

The photos seem very cloudy, so they may have dropped down how vibrant the orange is... if this isn't the case, and they are like that in real life then I think you chould make them a bit richer. The richness of colours seems to be quite typical of marines, and it's a bit strange not seeing that.

Other than that fantastic, I love the patterns you've been painting on, superb work as always :).

Wow. I generally find that a looser, more impressionistic style is the result of a dearth of painting skill, so it's great to see it being employed as a positive stylistic attribute. It reminds me quite a lot of John Blanche's work, with all the grit and depth of colour. Really vivid, with great depth. The floor looks much better in close-up than it does in the full-scene view, possibly because there's just so much of it and it overpowers the orange on the dreadnought. I think the scene would be really enhanced by cluttering it up a bit more, with more orange, red and brown shades to flesh it out, but no doubt you already have plans in this line.
