Been kind of unproductive lately, but now I have finally started a project I have been looking forward to for a long long time.

The duel between Ferrus Manus and Fulgrim have for a long time been something I have wanted to do, and when the miniatures came out for these two characters I couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed with the execution of this epic moment from the Fulgrim novel.I love the miniatures, and the attention to detail on both are amazing, but the display base just didn't do it for me, it was too over the top.
I decided to go for something a little more like the scene from the novel cover and strip everything down so the two of them was in focus, instead of the pile of dead marines they were dueling on they would be battling out on a simpler field of battle and moved much closer together to emphasize the aspect of them actually fighting.
I also opted for a bit of a height advantage for Fulgrim as is the case on the artwork, and went with a triangle irregular plinth that I have saved for a special project.

Enough talk, on to the pictures!

The basic shape of the base is done, now comes all the detailing and the subtle changes needed to integrate the two into the scene completely.

And the base without Ferrus, the only thing I have used of the original display bases so far is a section with some shattered storm shields that I cut out.

That's it for now, comments and critique are very welcomed so don't hold yourself back :)

That's already looking really good. Bringing them closer together and raising Fulgrim up higher makes them look really dynamic. I can already tell from the painting on Fulgrim's face that these are going to look amazing when finished. Keep us the good work

Great to have you back, mate :) Thats some undertaking youve got yourself. Knowing your work, im having some high hopes for this one.
I like that you got rid of all those dead marines (FW seams to love them :p). This keeps the focus on the two characters fighting, IMO.
Like the placeing of the minis on the base and the height difference.

Subbed !

TDA yer back just in time for me to snatch some painting pointers for my own tawdry little project. I'm already floored by the amount of detail you've achieved in a face less than a quarter CM square! 8O

And besides that I have been testing out purples (gotta love working in a hobby shop) as I have real trouble deciding how to go about painting Fulgy... So many choices

I also have a few IH and EC models in the works, might toss them in here as well :D

Well, this thread is going to be very interesting, no doubt about it. Im glad you have choosen to do your own base, because they really are close enough to fight, and not alike the original ones

Ooooh...that about sums up my feelings.

Looking forward to seeing this progress. The repositioning of the figures and the new base already make the whole thing look good.

I have missed your logs so it will be nice to follow a new TDA Heresy Fix...

Thanks man, I hope it won't dissapoint then. I have a few other heresy projects in the pipeline as well, but you'll have to wait a while for those :P
Onto the update:

I have a bit more progress on the choice of purple, I think I'm getting there

Not entirely happy with his eyes yet, but that'll get fixed at a later stage.

And the base is done and basecoated
http://i535.photobucket.com/albums/ee354/SteffenSJensen/The%20phoenix%20and%20the%20gorgon/baseprogress_zpsff17aa9a.jpg

Moving slowly on, hopefully after all this Christmas is over I can find some more time for this project.

A small update, found out there's been a small hair in my paint.. Luckily it's only a basecoat so it should be pretty easy to fix.

This is coming along really nicely, I completely understand why you've taken the off of their bases, makes a lot of sense.

Looking forward to more updates.

Thanks guys and happy 2014 to all of you :D

I have decided to fix the eye problem(still needs the iris ofc), as I had to add some more depth to the hair anyway. I also have Ferrus' head almost complete.
http://i535.photobucket.com/albums/ee354/SteffenSJensen/The%20phoenix%20and%20the%20gorgon/WIPJanuary64_zps16fae003.jpg

The base is also done, and work is moving along on the minis themselves.

Love the weathering on Fulgrims face, looks amazing.

My opinion of fulgrim is that it really needs a master class painter to pull the face off, so well done and keep up the good work!

Well... it looks impressive, but the lighting is killing the detail work you've put into fulgrim, and into ferrus. So far they seem good, if they are on par with Dorn then we're in for a serious treat.

Crazy that this thread got a rating bellow 5. This is one that deserves it in comparison to some other threads out there that really doesn't make that 'clean cut'. Well anyway, keep up the good work! Looking forward following the process :-)

I am about 80% done with this, and not at all sure what I think about the sword so far.. I really need to work some more on that blade.
