Can a hero willingly jump in the way of attacks that are not shooting attacks?
The last game of Warhammer was Britonnia vs Orcs and Goblins. When he hit a couple of my Fanatics he realized it was a very real possibility it would destroy his whole unit. He declared his hero (with a good ward save) was going to leap in the way to courageously save his comrades and take half the hits. We searched through the rulebook to figure out if that move was even legal. We could not find anything so rolled off to settle it quickly.
Where can i find out if such an action is allowed or disallowed in the rules?

If the hero is alone then yes. But I'm pretty sure if he's in a unit fanatic hits are distributed as shooting.

No, heroes cannot nominate to take hits for their unit. Think of how broken that would be with some of the unkillable lord combinations out there (I'm looking at you, 3+ ward re-roll 1's Chaos Lord).

I thought the same thing but we could not find where in the rulebook it actually says they cannot voluntarily take hits.

That's because the rulebook doesn't bother to detail what you can't do. It's a permissive ruleset; if it doesn't say you can do something, you can't.

If your opponent tries to argue otherwise, tell him you can start casting your spells for free and restoring all models which die back to life as Emperor Dragons because the rules don't specify that you can't.

The rules for fanatics state you 'distribute hits as per shooting attacks', so he could only give the hero 1 hit unless there were enough hits to hit everyone else in the unit.

As an aside, the whole unit(if they were knights) would have a 5+ ward against the fanatics hits.

Page 99. If there are at least 5 rank and file models left in the unit, "[a]ll hits are allocated onto the unit's rank and file models." The character cannot take the hits.
