View Full Version : BTJ's start of something new

BTJ

So, a new year, and a (somewhat drastic) new start. And a part of said new start is me taking a new approach to this wonderful hobby of ours. So I've dug out a load of models, some from 5/6 years ago and some I got as recently as Friday, and have written up 18 army lists spread over 12 different wargames. The plan is, in the space of this year, to paint up each and every one of those lists as best I can, and to the best of my ability. Now, a few rules for this wonderful little undertaking I'm on:

1-The models bought counter in my sig can't jump higher than models painted. If it does, no more buying shiny things till balance is restored

2-I have to try an push myself out of my comfort zone every so often. It's the only way I'll improve at all as a painter. That can be something as simple as painting terrain or even trying to not muck up a paper building(seriously, I've never gotten one right as I type this) or something like painting NMM or OSL.

3-I have to update with pics at least once a week, barring exceptional circumstances(like having to write 12,000 words for college by the 20th....)

4-I need to make the attempt to spend 1-2 hours a day with a paint brush in hand. I used to paint everyday as a kid, then I went to a new school in the city and fell out of the habit. If I can break back into it, then I should be grand. I hope.

EDIT So, what I've done today wasn't much, but as a certain supermarket chain says, every little helps. Today I picked out an Infinity Morat that was half-painted and finished him off. Wasn't much, mostly details, but it's still something. I'll take a phone photo as proof tomorrow morning when I have some natural light. One down, 498 to go

Wow, this will be great plog!

If I can finish it. One of the problems I've been having lately is I tend to give up on things before seeing them through, or doing them half-assed. I'm hoping if I can discipline myself and put in the effort then that will rub off on everything else. My backlog for college kind of demonstrates my point-I've 12,000 words to write for assignments over the next three weeks on top of an exam and I really could have done better to avoid it all lol

Hey, there is one goal waiting to be shattered.

If there is some advice I could give you, it would be to take every victory and savour it, even the small ones. So yeah man, beat that number!! And be proud of it!
The other advice would be to enjoy yourself, even if you don't succeed. It's not the numbers that matter (though my log would suggest I'd think otherwise) but it's whether or not you enjoy yourself while trying to achieve your goals. So, in short, feel proud when you accomplish a goal, and feel proud when you don't, and enjoy it either way. Good luck!

Cheers for the advice! And honestly, the numbers don't matter too much to me, they're just a way of tracking everything so I can look back in a year and decide how good an attempt I made. And yeah, part of my problem is that army painting at my pace is a slog, so I give up after a while because I stop enjoying it, and then I hate the unpainted masses. Part of the reason I want to paint so many different models is variety. If I burn out on one then I can go to another for a while before hopping back.

Also, I do have a (crappy phone) picture of yesterday's progress, but no luck getting it to save onto my laptop to upload. Any image-hosting sites allow you to directly upload from email attachments?

If I'm honest, that was restraining myself when I set it. By a lot. I have something like 4 or 5 more warhammer fantasy armies, 3 more infinity armies and something like 7-8 40k armies, not to mention more specialist games, LOTR, Warmachine and Bones KS minis than I can count. The joys of 15 years worth of unpainted stuff, and becoming a real hobby butterfly since finding the internet.

I know the feeling! I have so much unpainted stuff, but always get suckered in by more lovely stuff! And have found quite a few games systems (including board games) that I have got into over recent times. It's a lofty target, but as the saying goes 'shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars'

Ok, so I said I was going for firsts here, and I have a couple I wanna cross of the list already! The first of these is that courtesy of the fact that the last time I got any of these I was seven, I'd never not gotten cardboard scenery and built it right. Every time I tried, I screwed it up. Today, I managed to build a couple of DZC buildings, and apart from being ever-so-slightly uneven, they're perfect.

Secondly, and somewhat related, is the most involved terrain I'd ever put together before now is the old GW gothic ruins that you got in the 3rd ed. starter box. As of right now, I have a Deadzone building going together kind of seamlessly. Now, a couple of things to say about the terrain in the box. It's nice, and in theory you never need to use glue. However, while you seem to get loads in the box, you only get enough to either build one nicely sized building, or loads of small 3"x3" buildings to fulfill the terrain requirements. And that's because you only get a handful of connectors, and nowhere near enough of the corner ones that you need. Also the connectors hold fine without glue, in fact, so well that when I tried disassemble a building, a connector broke, and some others just wouldn't budge. So my terrain's getting glued together, or at least the part of one building I have the connectors for is. Overall, I'd give the Deadzone terrain 6/10. Cheap, simple, and nice, but the connectors leave a lot to be desired

See, the issue with pictures is that I need to find my camera. The one that could literally be anywhere in the county I live in. As soon as I either find or replace it I'll have photos up of stuff I've done, as well as some minis I paint over the last year or two

Yeah, the armies are mostly either part of a larger collection that I can build an army out of(in the case of 3 of the infinity armies and the LotR stuff I can build multiple armies from one collection!). Only the Chaos Marines(which were a birthday/christmas present from my now ex-girlfriend), Deadzone, and DzC stuff were always intended to be a distinct army from the start. And even then, with the chaos stuff, I have Daemons and FW renegades to go with them. Also, still no joy on actually finding my camera. Hence the continued lack of pictures. Which isn't so bad, because I've made no actual progress since new years day thanks to a hell of a lot of college work to hand in. Which is annoying, because my LGS has a Dropzone Commander sale till the end of the month, so my counter's instantly gonna go in the wrong direction.

Pics! pics! - cameras are cheap these days, you should be able to get a decent point and shoot for only 75 euros - max.

I'll make you a deal, sir.

for every 10 you do, you can hold me accountable for at LEAST 1 - sadly I've worked out that between work, gf, friends, gym, and church, I have only a few precious hours per week for gaming/reading/painting/video games. So if i manage 1/10th of your goal... i could feel accomplished.

deal?

I've done a similar inventory and NEED to do something like this... maybe I'll start in feburary with a bigger goal.

Regardless of my accomplishments I'll be stalking this thread.

BTJ
07-01-2014, 18:55
Oh yeah, I know they're cheap, I'm just in college so don't really have the cash to buy a camera I'll only ever use for this PLog when I know I have one already. Worst case scenario I have a camera happy friend who I can borrow one off till I give up and buy my own lol

Also, I'll take you up on that deal lol. I'm kind of the same time wise as you are(20 hours of me week are going to and from college), but I'll hopefully get you painting :P

So, Week one Progress Report. No pictures, because the camera's still AWOL(saw one for €30 though, so that's my next hobby purchase after splashing out on DZC in my LGS's sale). Total models painted is the amazing total of 1. Out of the 9.6 average needed to reach my goal. Considering I've been spending all my time writing college essays, it's not too bad, and hopefully I'll make amends the second We get weather conducive to using spray primer. Not a great start to the year by any means, but it could have been a lot worse too. Right now the plan is to paint when I can until the 20th, and then I have a week or two with nothing to do so I can blitz my DZC stuff, as well as the Black Legion models I currently have. Also, a question for anyone who cares. My Infinity JSA are being painted primarily white, but there is an O-yoroi tempting me to paint it purple and give it a NERV logo. Should I give in or leave it white like the rest?

Sparda

How are you going to count the DZC stuff for your goal?? 1 base= 1 model?

Daniel36
09-01-2014, 07:28
That's how I count them. It takes approximately the same amount of time to paint up a base of 5 infantry men compared to a single 28mm model.

And leave it white. At least... Unless the model is very different from the rest of the crew.
NERV, was that Neon Genesis?

BTJ

Yeah, they're one physical model, so that's how I've counted them.

And Daniel, yeah, NERV is Evangelion. All my friends who've seen it say the O-yoroi looks like Shinji's unit 01, so the idea's there. And yeah, it's a bit different to the rest of the team in that it's a mech lol

EDIT: Got some sun today, so the DZC armour, Deadzone, a couple of Anima minis, and BB elves just got undercoated, and after Sunday I should have time to actually pick up a brush again and finish some stuff off. Only problem I have is that I found a really, really nice tutorial of DZC PHR that I want to try out, and again, my LGS has everything on sale, so we'll see how well I resist.

BTJ
10-01-2014, 11:14
Ok, got some painting done last night. Basecoated Ayl's skin and Roxxen's cloak for anima. Ayl's just started but with Roxxen I just need to layer his cloak, paint some bits of cloth, paint the tiny bit of his face you can see, and do his sword. Also have a Bear and my Hunters started for DZC. The Bear needs a bit more work, because I'm smart and doing a four-layer camo scheme, but the hunters are coming along nicely. Another layer of grey, then some blue stripes for a (hopefully) sharkskin look, then a little bit of metal and the 'eyes'. I have to say, I much prefer painting 10mm for mass battle games already, an hour's work on four minis and they're nearly done already. I can tell, however, where some details at that scale don't work as well as the resin. None of my infantry have elbows, for a start. Most of it, though, you can't tell unless you're actually working on the models in some way.

BTJ
28-01-2014, 20:26
Ok, so, managed to dig out the camera and get some photos of minis. Which now has me wanting to go and change up what I'm painting so I (hopefully) end up with two armies for each system that makes it on the list. Cause yeah, I have a LOT of unpainted armies I want to work on.

And some Necron Warriors. Ok, it's only five guys, but they're the first squad I've managed to finish in I don't know how long. I like how quick they were to paint, but they kind of bore me. I might redo their shoulders in the green/black the scarabs have on their carapaces to make them more interesting
