View Full Version : favourite space marine heavy support choice!

The heavy support section of our dex is full of great toys, from the classic dakka predator to the new centurions on the block. What are peoples favourites? Which ones see the most use, either through points efficiency, or usefulness. And which is the poor forgotten stepchild of the heavies?

I always field a whirlwind. It's cheap, long ranged and ignores cover. There really isn't anything else like it in the codex.

YOU LIE! there is only one choice in my codex longfangs!!!

10 Man Devastator Squad with Lascannons. Reliable, hard to shift, usually they keep firing the entire game.

They're pretty great, probably my second favorite.

Crusader? No, that's a Dedicated Transport...

Contemptor? Forgworld, but still extra sexy.

To be honest, I only have a Phobos and a Predator, at the moment (and the Phobos need some work). But Vindicators are on my short list, and I'm still debating the whole Hunter/Stalker, thing. Centurions and enough PA for Devestators is on my longer list, though.

For efficiency it is the Vindicator. It provides a pure killing power which is severely lacking in the Marine book. Second choice would be Heavy Support Squads with 10 Autocannons!

Dev squads have never let me down in any sort of marine book. They are generally fairly cheap and can handle anything if you equip them right. For vanilla marines though, a thunderfire cannon is a close second.

I'm quite partial to Heavy Bolter Devastators. They're reasonably priced and can kill the hell out of most things through sheer weight of fire. I know they aren't the best, nor most cost efficient, but I loves them.

Don't usually take one, if I had to choose it'd be an allied in Leman Russ/Hammerhead.

Or just a Vindicator, simple and vicious.

Thunderfire Cannon for me.

Losing Command

Thunderfire cannons are just awesome. I've been using Thunderfire cannons since 5th edition marines even when artillery was considered bad in 5th. Now that Barrage is added I sometimes leave them out of my armylist to keep it a fair game (specially after 2 thunderfire cannons almost single handedly blew up 150 Ork boyz in 4 turns)

Sicaran. It's what the Predator should have been.

Vindicator all the way. Never leave home without at least 2 of them.

10 man Heavy Support Squad with 10 missile launchers with flakk missiles

Mortis Contemptor. 12 S6 bs5 shots and two s8ap3 shots. Oh and skyfire/interceptor on top of that. Also av13. Also a 5++. Incredibly nasty and efficient.

My favorite is a 10-man Devastator Squad with 4 Lascannons. Although, with all the Flyers out there now, I will probably have to start putting in 1 or 2 Missile Launchers with Flakk Missiles.

Flak missiles are only strength 7. If you go flak go all flak or don't bother.

Its nice to see a variety of favourites and no clear auto include units. I personally love vindicators, my only issue with them is once our close range units get stuck in they become less useful. Thunderfires are great too, especially against units hiding behind aegis lines.

Vindicator is my favourite. Centurions by far are my least favourite heavy support unit, purely for how utterly stupid the concept is.

Missiledevs with flakk. Tank Hunters goes a long way towards making flakk missiles effective, and given my track record with Str 8 AT weapons, it makes my krak missiles pretty effective too.

My quad-MM sallie devs. So much fun.

Also, occasionally, 5 devs with 2 plasma-cannons in a rhino-as-pillbox. Even if the transport is knocked out, they can usually get back in the fight in a turn.
