View Full Version : Through the jungles the devourer comes...

11-06-2006, 15:19
Alright, after being completely out of the hobby for about two years, I have spare time once again, so I took the plunge back into 40k and brought up two of my armies to my new home... unfortunatly, neither is completely painted. So, after a little thought, I have decided to finish off my Tyranids before anything else.

They've gone through two schemes thus far, a light blue carapace with dark green skin (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v233/Nazerth/40k%20Tyranids/test_blue.jpg) and now bright red carapace with spotted blue skin (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v233/Nazerth/40k%20Tyranids/test_red.jpg). I much prefer the new scheme.

As well as the new scheme, I've decided to put a lot more effort into my bases than on any of my previous armies, and put the nids into a lush, verdant jungle. I think it's a good contrast to the colours, and just to go against the norm with all the urban bases popping up in armies lately :p.

The list on this page will be updated whenever I complete something, and pics will be posted.

Work List (Red is totally unpainted, blue is WiP and green is finished.)

Alpha Class Death Tyrant
3 Tyranid Warriors
1 Zoanthrope
12 Genestealers
20 Termagaunts
16 Termagaunts
16 Hormagaunts
3 Ripper bases(2 Done)
6 Infestation markers and 2 Hive Nodes (1 infestation marker done)
1 Biovore
15 Spore Mines

So as you can see, I have a little bit of work ahead of me. Stay tuned for WiP shots of my rippers and zoanthrope.

My first completed model, a ripper swarm.

11-06-2006, 16:15
Second Swarm WiP (Just need to paint the base and roots of the tree)

Latest model, WiP of my Zoanthrope. It's less orange in person, I'm just too lazy to colour correct a WiP shot.

not 100% sure on the rippers, the green looks really bright, distracts the eye, the red on the thrope looks excelent though

11-06-2006, 16:29
Just a little group pic of my ripper bases. The third has broken twig fragments for the log and stump.

I think the rippers look better in groups than as single bases.

11-06-2006, 16:33
i think you are correct, more rippers looks alot better

11-06-2006, 16:36
mmm love the rise of color to an almost orange i would say.

11-06-2006, 17:50
like 'em alot - the skin on that test gaunt looks great!

11-06-2006, 21:09
nice color scheme

11-06-2006, 21:14
i agree. the color rocks. bright, but still, what color are blood angels? and they definitely rock. lovin' the zoanthorpe

11-06-2006, 21:34
Loving the colourscheme, your 2 years away from 40k obviously hasn't had an effect on your painting skill!! I agree the tree looks a little bright, but that could be the flash on the camera.

11-06-2006, 21:42
I think you picked the right color scheme and the thrope is looking great.

12-06-2006, 02:59
Not sure what to do for the Zoanthrope's base. I thought about putting a split tree in front of the thrope, as through the tree split under the stress of the psychic aura of the thrope. But I'm not quite sure how to go about doing that... any ideas or other suggestions for the base?

Finished off the base on the second ripper swarm, just need to paint three more for the third base. Should be done tomorrow and I'll post up pics.

what i'm going to do for my nids (same basing sceme) is use the GW/pet store aquarium plants + twings, satic grass, flock, sand to make ferns, and large bushes growing on the bases.... works well for larger base/models (hive tyrants, zonathropes, fexs, wariors

12-06-2006, 03:27
Think I'll head into one of the myraid of pet stores here tomorrow and see if I can find any useful aquarium plants. Problem is, right now I'm poor, so I've been trying to use stuff I already have or free stuff.

Nazerth thats some very nice work you are doing there.

I too am working on a 'nid army at the moment so it is great to see another doing the same, I will be watching your thread very closely.

As for your Zoanthrope base, the tree idea sounds great. How about doing like an Akira/Terminator bubble of energy style base, so like cut out a ball shape out of the ground and surrounding trees as if the energy is literally dismantling the atoms of the nearby ground and trees. In fact that sounds like a good idea, I might try something similar myself.

One thing I do think you should do is use a clear flying base stand instead of the claw style one in the 'thrope comes with, thats what I have done and I think it looks a lot better.

Either way keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing more.

I like that "mottled" blue, looks ace and fits well with that red.

Only thing I do not like is the tree on the base, I would leave them off.

@ spikedog: The Akira/Terminator energy bubble base is a really cool idea, but I just don't have with me right now the supplies to make such a base. Maybe I'll try something like that on my next Thrope (looking to get a brood of 3 once I get some capitol) but for this one, I might have the ground scortched/scarred from the Zoanthrope's passing. I dunno, still trying to figure out how to do the split tree.

@ ExoCowboy: Too late for the tree, she's glued down and the base is done. Personally, I like the way it looks, so long as it's not on the table alone.

Started my internship today, so maybe won't be able to complete the third ripper base today. My computer is all haggared and needs intensive fixing before I can get it functional for working (Yay for service pack 2). If they get done I'll post some pics tonight, if not, they should be done for tomorrow.

Hey all. Sorry about the lack of updating, internship, girlfriend, searching for a job, blah blah blah just took away my time and energy to work on my army.

But now. Oh ho now. Now I'm out of my internship, my girlfriend is gone for the weekend and I'm taking a vacation from looking for employment.

So I pawned a bunch of DVDs, games and CDs and got a Hive Tyrant, some greenstuff and grabbed my bitz box. Will post WiP pics soon.

Well, here's some WiP work on my Hive Tyrant, it's the first time I've used GS in like three years, but I don't play Nurgle and I likely never will, so when I have a chance to do some gross modelling I take it!

Left side of the toxic miasma is done, just need to finish off the right side and I can glue the torso together and put the upper flesh hooks in.

The idea behind the implant attack is that it's a compressed muscular spring with a big bone spike on the end, so that the end of the tail can extend outward and just impale its victims.

Planning on trying to pick up a lot of 5 ripper swarms offa eBay. I loved working with the ripper's bases. Just about (finally) done my third ripper base, so should have pics up soon.

Your sculpting looks great, especially if you've not done any in 3 years! Hope to see your tyrant with paint on soon, so the details stand out better

30-06-2006, 22:20
Here's a blue-taced together WiP shot of my Death Tyrant, so ya'll can see how beasty he's gonna look. Not the final pose, I have plans for the base...

Lookin good - that's what mine would look like if i had the time/skill to paint well. (maybe not mottled, but still the colours rock)

01-07-2006, 04:06
Looking good, Nazerth. I love your interpretation of toxic miasma, I would love to see some really close shots of it if you can. Can't wait to see it painted too.

Are you going to paint it before sticking it all together ? I think your mottled scheme is going to look great on such a huge gribbly beast, any plans on what colour you are going to do the details like the venom cannon pipes and the flesh hooks ?
