Results are in and I've started divulging the results, visit my blog at http://tusks-horns.blogspot.co.uk/ to see the final findings. I'm working my way through each army first, and then I'll start on the other questions that were asked. Thank you for everyone that took part, unfortunately SurveyMonkey had a limit of 100 responses so I had to close the poll as I didn't want to waste anyone's time, I was aiming for 100 but I feel that potentially we could have got plenty more and had a decent demographic.

Original Post

Recently there's been a thread on Warseer talking about the issue of are there too many armies, so I decided to set up a questionnaire to get to the bottom of the problem.

Survey removed due to SurveyMonkey restrictions

The initial thread may be found here:

http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?390001-Are-there-too-many-armies-Warhammer-Fantasy

I've got a good amount of responses so far, and thank you to everyone who has replied and filled the questionnaire out already. But it would be great to test it on a larger demographic of people, so if you've got a spare 2-3 minutes it would be fantastic if you could fill this out. In about 2 weeks when I feel I've got a good amount of responses I'll make my findings public on here, there's already some really interesting issues that have arisen.

Cheers again,
Mark

Bumping this one up,

40 responses so far, some really interesting statistics coming through, however I'm looking for as much as possible before I truly analyse these in detail.

Something of interest however, is that it seems that a lot of people have a collection of Bretonnians and still use it as their primary force - I didn't see that one coming...

You could try getting a larger sample pool by advertising the questionnaire on other major Fantasy/wargaming websites.

Ah yes, I was going to ask about the results anyway. Really looking forward to it. I am surprised to learn there's so much Bretonnia going on at the moment.

When do you reckon the final results will be in?

Ultimate bump of justice!

Survey taken! I'm following the comments of others in that I, too, am interested in the results. And since I collect all 15 armies.. this was a bit of a challenge for me. hehehe.

Finished and looking forward to seeing the overall picture.

Done, there are some overlaps in Fantasy (3 types of eleves, 2 types of undead, 3 types of Chaos, 2 types of humans) but overall it is much better than 40K, and I think there is more variation.

Vanilla Fishmen, or the Fishmen of Chaos?

........... Fishmen.

Yes, indeed. I'm pretty sure I was the first one to submit them. :D

Vanilla Fishmen, or the Fishmen of Chaos?

There is Background in the current army book that suggests there is a drowned Lizardmen Temple City whose inhabitants changed into something... more adapted to the new environment (*wink wink wink*). If it is true that these are really Fishmen of Lizardmen descent, I doubt they can be influenced by Chaos.

Oh, this is so awesome... I would start this army immediately! I will continue my holy crusade against Chaos on land, in the air and even in the water if the need arises!

For the Old Ones!

You left Chaos Dwarfs out of the survey--they are a current and playable army, after all.

Thanks for all the responses everybody. Unfortunately SurveyMonkey have restricted the results that I can see to 100 so I've had to pull the link, they want me to start paying them monthly for their services to simply retrieve more of the data.

I'll be spending some time on this over the weekend and I'll post up the results.

We need a race of Panda's that do kung fu. They can even have other animals working with them like Tigers, Peacocks, among others.

Then we need Araby and some race that when exposed to sunlight will sparkle.

Aren't the beast men of Ind supposed to be tigers or some such?

Nope. They're clearly Jungle Ducks.

Does this thread still serve any purpose then?

I suppose it serves the purpose of publishing the results.

Yep I'll be getting the results out as soon as possible, I've already compiled the information into Excel I just want to make it look visually interesting.

Right!

I've pulled some stats together for the first 2 armies, these are the Daemons and the Dark Elves. Read my full write up on my blog, however here's the generic breakdown:

http://tusks-horns.blogspot.co.uk/

Empire and Dwarfs up next, I'm going to try and get the rest of the armies done in one massive update later today. It's just taking a little while to organise the information and get it into a visually appealing format. After I've divulged the dirt on each army I'll move onto the other questions that were asked.

In your blog you write that you find Empire appears to be the most popular of armies, and that this revelation came as a shock to you. I find that slightly surprising, because it is a bit of common knowledge that Empire and O&G are Fantasy's best sellers, and GW also never attempted to hide the fact. If anything, this shows that your poll is a rather accurate reflection of realtity. I'm really looking forward to your evaluation of O&G.

Yeah I don't really know why I was shocked about it to be honest, I thought they'd be high on the list for sure. But the most popular wasn't what I expected at all, the O&G are extremely interesting, there is a lot of love for them that's for sure.

High Elves & Lizardmen up now. I would do them all but it's very late here so rest will be done tomorrow night.

I would disagree with a little of your evaluation. For instance based on a low figure of people wanting dwarves removed you talked about them being one of the most loved armies ... they are integral, and people love some fluff, but in my experience, due to the gunlines, they are actually quite disliked. Just because people recognize their centrality to the history and fluff and therefore dont want them removed, doesnt mean that they are liked ...

Very interesting analysis. Do I understand it right that the number of participants was limited to just 100 because of financial reasons?

Would suggest there are too few armies more than too many. Look at how FoW works, so you want to play say Germans, ok so what sort of Germans do you want, Infantry? Mechanised or Armoured, thats three armies right off. Then do you want a list from north west Europe, the east or the south? it keeps multiplying.

Map that to WHFB and you get say O&G as the following:
- Generic O&G, as they are now
- Pure Orc, orcs are maybe a bit cheaper, goblins are now Rare and expensive
- Pure Goblin (as above but the other way round)
- Wolf Clan, core units are wolf riders and wolf chariots, a few more elite units on wolves that are only in this list
- Forest goblins
- black orcs
- savage orcs

thats without adding many new units, you have a lot more flavour, different special characters, different ways of playing with the same models (but GW able to shift more books, or eBooks at least), a few extra special units that could easily be limited availability alongside the special book.

You now have a fair bit more variation, its shades of the same colour and not a different colour but it becomes a bit easier to do something off the wall as its harder to be able to counter everything.

with O&G above you have a fast cav army, you have a militaristic black orc army, a savage army - can decide to play the average one or specialise, become weak in one area to get better elsewhere and see how it goes.

Yes, unfortunately so. Surveymonkey had a restriction of 100 responses which I didn't know until it was too late, a few people slipped through the net before I could get rid of the link as well unfortunately... To which I can only apologise to those individuals. The only way to open up the results to unlimited would be to open up an account for a year with monthly installments, bit of a rip off really. If anybody knows any other survey sites that are free and have no limit on responses, let me know!

probably won't make the 100 participant cut-off so to share...

(paraphrasing here)
Q: What type of format would you like to see future rule books present in (ie spiraled flip books)?

A: A tome bound in human flesh.
