So I'm getting back into 40k, at least building out an army.

I haven't gotten the latest IG rule book so I'm a bit at a loss for some of the unit types and what they do.

I was thinking of picking up Victorian Miniatures Praetorian style guards and their Van Damien's World guys as scouts/penal legion. (Does IG have any scout type units?)

The idea was pretty standard that they are a colonial force put on some recently colonized world that is heavily infested with Orks etc. I'm mostly stoked about painting these up and doing some nice theming such as Chimeras carring ork heads and some of the aussie/bush style scouts as possible rough riders.

Any ideas?

Wait a few weeks. The new Guard Codex is the next one to be released so this isnt a good time to start ^^

Sure I get that - but surely standard infantry won't be removed from the codex :-p

No, but a whole host of new kits are coming. Might be wise to wait just to see what your options are.

True true. I still like the idea of the Praetorians, but like you said I might as well wait and just see what comes out. Might be something so rad that I can't live without it.

(I doubt it though ha ha)

If you like the model then get a unit or two to start with to see the ease of assembly and painting. A investment in one unit that can be used in various skirmish games is not going to kill you.

That was exactly my thought - I bought a unit of 10 when they were still metal and wasn't the easiest to put together, but the detail quality was very high.

I'm eager to see if the new resin variation has the same high quality with easier assembly.

I'm putting together a Victoria minis Guard army right now in my project log. I'd recommend some experience working with resin first- the models are fantastic but the resin used is a little brittle, which made for some awkward kludges in construction until I got used to it. You'll also be looking at a minor amount of gap filling and flash removal, so have some greenstuff handy.

In general though I couldn't recommend the models enough. Great stuff.

Sure it is.

You'll always need basic Guardsmen and a selection of special/heavy weapons.

We already know four of the kits which are coming out, so there's unlikely to be any great revelation on that front.

If you like Praetorians, send a PM to Col Gravis. He has a fantastic project log on this very forum and has very good Praetorian-esque sculpts of his own creation for sale.

You couldn't go far wrong building a standard platoon -
officer + 4 men Command squad
2-5 Infantry Squads
Infantry squad = 1 Sarge and 9 troopers. 1 can take a special, 1 can have a vox, two can become a weapons team if you so desire.

if you get past that lot between now and the IG Dex hitting the store, build a Leman Russ or two.

I am using Cadian troops with pith helmets for my Praetorian-like Imperial Guard.

The result is a blend of "modern" space-era and Victorian themes, perhaps more so than just giving Tommy Atkins a raygun and dumping him on some strange new world.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the Praetorians Ealdwulf from the Praetorian 4th!

Have you got some idea if your gong infantry heavy, or mechanised? And of course what regiment?

Id agree with Gorasmeth to a point, and avoid too many specialised units for now, but Infantry is always infantry and you cant go wrong with that.

As the good Light of the Emperor and tristessa mentioned I also ended up doing my own Colonial Empire bits following on from my own Praetorian regiment (http://colgravis.blogspot.com), and sell them through Curious Constructs (http://www.curiousconstructs.co.uk), if they cut the mustard for you I'm sure I could do you a deal.

In either case, really look forward to seeing what you put together! Always good to see Praetorians!

nonsense, should have started months ago! It'll take months just to get the troop options ready, let alone all the other units. He's got plenty of time to get his troops out of the way, before moving on to the more interesting releases, when they arrive.

Victoria miniatures http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/03/19/e2ane6ed.jpg

Well worth a look highly affordable and scale perfectly with 40k guardsmen
