View Full Version : What's the deal with Ork hair?

I just bought a secondhand Ork army, and as I begin the process of getting it reconfigured for my own use I'm starting to wonder about details I never thought about before.

First up: hair

What's the deal? Is there anything written about it?

Do they grow it naturally? Most Orks seem to go about bald, and the ones that do have a hairdo seem to favour the topknot to the exclusion of all else. Are all the rest shaving their heads constantly? Does the topknot have some sort of traditional symbolism or status relevance? I would have to guess no, since it's mainly a feature of the Boyz/Nobz kitz. What about facial hair? The army I picked up included a great old metal Mek model who has a beard, and it looks badass enough that I'm thinking about giving my Warboss one.

Back in RT or 2nd Edition hair was explained as being a parasitic animal worn for fashion. The Hair Squig. I assume that's still canon.

Yep. It's a little critter that bites into their scalp that they wear for fashion. Orks are naturally hairless.

As can be seen in this excerpt from Waaagh! The Orks!:

And here, being applied by a painboy (barber-boy?):

Lol. Really cool background for orks and their squigs.

That's great fluff, pardon the pun! When this hobbies fluff is so intense and dark, the Orks provide much needed relief and fun.

i think if you look at the hair of the figure on the right, you would see a hair squig's snout

It was just written in a better time, when GW had original thoughts... All the old squig fluff is hilarious .

Thanks guy, great answers/links. And the best possible explanation I could have hoped for, from a modeling standpoint. It justifies my preference for an all-bald army but also lets me pursue the beard conversions!

Orks are basically (questionably) intelligent fungi, right? A lack of natural body hair would only make sense. ;)

Funnily enough, that was the reason behind the fluff. It also lets you have all sorts of odd colours of mohawks and topknots, too.

In addition to fashion, hair squigs are used medically to hold wounds closed (instead of stitches).

As a brace of Hair Squig facts:

Hair squigs are parasites, they latch onto their host and feed on their blood.

Hair Squigs don't actually have hair, their "tuft" is actually a collection of gill frods through which it breathes.

IIRC, RT-era background also had it that only Weirdboyz tended to wear beard-squigs (hair-squigs attached to the chin and lips rather than the scalp), coz they'z weird. Proppa boyz don't wanna look like a stunty ;)

I think Runtherdz have had them from the beginning as well.

Another interesting bit on hair squigs, they are used by Painboyz to close the wounds instead of stitching them (by making them latch tightly into flesh on two sides of wound and thus close it); the painboy on AndrewGPauls picture is "stitching" a wound on smiling Ork's jaw, not applying a beard.

I don't know why, but this thread has some how given me images of Orks with big pompadour hairdoos. Thank you. :)
