View Full Version : WIP Forgeworld Mk IIB Land Raider, Crimson Fists stlyee

14-06-2006, 21:07
I have been painting this model for some time now (over six months on and off) and now I'm having a bit of a drive at finishing it. General C&C are most welcome. :)

Apologies for the quality of the pics, but as this is a WIP I hope they'll do. It may be my monitor, but the red isn't quite as RED!!!!1!!1!1!1!! as it looks; in fact, I'm finding it tricky to get it nice and bright and even - if anyone has any tips, that'd be groovy.

14-06-2006, 21:15
Looks good so far. I'm a big fan of weathering and a little battle damage on tanks, really brings them to "life" IMHO.

14-06-2006, 21:18
Me too, if I do any though, it'll be when the rest of the work is done.

That said, I want this tank to look like the sacred 10000 year old relic it is, so I want it to look like it's been pampered.

14-06-2006, 21:24
erm... looks good... just .. its abit bright.. looks more like ultra marine coulours, not Crimson fists..

great painting, very well done, just very bright for fists IMO

I think there's a bit too much lighting on that photo... but looking forward to seeing how this turns out. Mk IIB Land Raiders RAWK after all.

14-06-2006, 22:35
Looking cool - I love the MKIIB, it looks just like the Epic 40K minis.

Nice paint job, would like to see some rust and dirt on there.

15-06-2006, 00:28
I think this is the firts mini of yours I've ever seen McMullet, you've done a sweet job of it (even if I think it looks like it's got post boxes stuck to the sides), I agree with HPD_Andy though, the battle damage could be upped, it's good that you're going to do it :).

15-06-2006, 09:39
Cheers guys!

The lighting in the pic is indeed a bit off, the colour is a bit lighter than your average Crimson Fists in real life, but not that much. I think I may have let the camera get away with over exposeing, since that tends to bring the detail out a bit more. The red, in particluar, is more subdued than it looks, though it may be a tad too bright. I'll have a look at it when I get home, and maybe hit it with a few washes of red gore.

As I say, I'm torn on battle damage. At the moment, I have two muddied/bullet riddled tanks in this army, and two clean ones, and yes, the former look much better. On the other hand, I like the idea of this tank being really looked after by the techmarines, what with it being so ancient.

Ah well, I can always say it got shot up very recently, and they havent had time to fix it. I think you've convinced me. ;)

15-06-2006, 10:14
Ooh, now that's a Land Raider!

Very nice and tidy painting, but as has been said, there could be some dust at least. You know, you drive a behemoth like that into a terrain, in any terrain, it will get dirty in seconds. Just use weathering sparingly on this one.

16-06-2006, 17:51
I can see the pic, so I will comment :p

The tank looks lovely so far, nice smooth coats and everything is in it's place. As said, some weathering will make the armour look amazing, maybe try doing the infamous streaking effect on it?

Don't forget to weather the metals, too ;)

16-06-2006, 19:34
yeah, i cant see the pic, would be easier if you linked through photobucket.

Pic link dead :(
I'd love to see it.

17-06-2006, 10:29
I wouldn't dig it up to much with bullet holes and the like but some paint chipping, mud and exhaust/oil grime would is what I would go for. On the exhausts I've been tinkering with a metallic hot look but have not got it to perfection (most like never will) yet.

Don't get me wrong a little weathering can go a long way. Too much is well, too much.

Mac dear chap. Cant see it I presume this is due to the server glitch, hope you get them back up soon.

Talk too you soon

19-06-2006, 23:30

Must... paint... faster. Well, that's one sponson, and most of the left side of the tank, pretty much done. I seem to be getting somewhere with it though, certainly I've upped the average rate as this model has been assembled for over 18 months now...

I will be doing some mud and what have you though, it'll hide the odd scrappy bit of painting if nothing else. ;)

The above pic is much closer to the colours in real life, so it looks less like an Ultramarine tank this time. :p

20-06-2006, 00:29
The second set of pictures are Great. Good job on the Highlighting too. Keep it up.

20-06-2006, 12:45
Much more Crimson Fist looking, real sharp.

20-06-2006, 13:01
The red on the gun tips and on the circular joint with the hull doesnt look too smooth, may just be the picture but there seems to be some slight difference in the shade of red. Other than that, nice work, making me look at that fig in a different way

20-06-2006, 16:59
ooo thats alot better looking!

i trus that is truer to the origional colours, if so i take back my origional comant and that tdoes look great!

22-06-2006, 23:25
Thanks for your comments all! Here's another lil update for you all. Not much has changed, mainly I have done the emblem on the front hatch and tidied a few things up. I also managed to flick a lump of fried egg onto it when I was having lunch, but that's largely irrelevent so I don't know why I mentioned it.

As Mortare said, the red on the lascannon wasn't too smooth, so I've worked on it a bit - frankly, it still isn't too good, but I'm done with it for the moment at least.

Pics below, the close up of the front hatch is bit bright again but hopefully you get the idea. :)

EDIT: Forgot, there was one specific thing I was meaning to ask you chaps: Any idea what to put on that thar name plate? Thanks!

Dorn's Might.

Looking good!

23-06-2006, 07:01
mcmullet! you fool, your making me want to do a crimson fists army!!!

it looks just perfect so far. if you wanted to make it look super you could try some fleur'd whatsit on the side of the tank.

i agree with dorns might for the nameplate, paint it gold first though.

23-06-2006, 09:15
Dorn's Might, melikes! Cheers Hotwerth!

I will probably fill any large open spaces up with freehand/text if I can be bothered... Also, I have a few FW Icon Packs, so I'll likely make some sparing use of them.

One thing that occurred to me last night, is that the Maltese Cross looks a bit too dark. I was thinking I'd redo the outline in something like white or bone (to look like Marble), what do you think?

23-06-2006, 19:27
looking really nice, any more piccies?

also, what would you say to the quality etc. of the kit, is it worth the £55?

(£10 for doors, so reall £45)

23-06-2006, 21:15
@ Unique1, it also has different sponsons and what looks like a new piece where the heavy bolters go, so its not just plastic land raider and new doors.

24-06-2006, 09:21
I knew that, i was just wondering mcmullets opinion on value for it.

24-06-2006, 16:16
I think, personally, it is one of the best value FW kits. The sponsons are pretty large chunks of resin on their own, and they are very nice. Then you have the big hoofing great chimney stacks of death (http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=10256&d=1150315453) on the back, and, as Railgunner says, the different front glacis.

That's a lot of resin for 15, when you think how little you get if you buy just a set of doors for 10. It is a great model and fits together pretty well. If you're limiting yourself to 25 to spend at FW on a Marine army, this would be top of my personal list.

Sadly, I've done absolutely no work on it since last time... There may be an update later if you're lucky. ;):p

24-06-2006, 17:01
Thanks, it looks really nice, i like the brightness of the red alot, very contrasting.

you got any piccies for us, i'm interested to see more angles of the beast.

24-06-2006, 23:03
Righto, a bit of hung-over painting this evening, so don't expect top quality stuff... ;)

I've redone the outline of the maltese cross in bone, plus the purity seals, a load of lenses and the name plate. As you can see, I fluffed up and misjudged the width of the letters, er, that is, I decided I wanted to paint a very small Fists symbol after the name so I did the letters narrower ON PURPOSE.

It's a bodge, I think, but I'd like some opinions on it (i.e., does it look bad enough that I should just redo it, or have I gotten away with it?).

Fullsize image: http://images2.fotopic.net/?iid=yi9orl&noresize=1&nostamp=1&quality=70

@ Unique1: I'll take some more pics next time I get enough painting done to do an update.

24-06-2006, 23:11
Do you think they might let me buy one with brey knight doors instead of the other options?:p (I doubt it:cries: ) But it looks like a fantastic model. How easy is it to put together?
I'm liking the paint job on it as well (must resist collecting crimson fists)

24-06-2006, 23:22
Hey, drop them an email, it's worth a try... that'd be a nice thing to see. :D

The model goes together pretty easily - only problem I find is that the lascannon are a bit loose in their mounts, so they tend to droop downwards a bit, and the standard thing with FW bits that it needed the odd bit of green stuff to bodge some gaps.

My biggest piece of advice for anyone who is thinking of buying this kit would be to paint the various bits of the sponsons as you assemble them, rather than gluing the whole thing together beforehand like I have. There're a lot of fiddly bits that are hard to get at when they're glued in.

24-06-2006, 23:42
E-mail sent:p
I think i do prefer it to normal plastic Land Raider, maybe they should try and make a crusader variant :p

25-06-2006, 18:23
Good luck! Not sure about the Crusader though, isn't the Crusader design post-heresy?

I started tidying up the left hand side today, which was very boring so I got distracted and started detailing the right hand side. Ho hum.

Todays progress:

(Bigger pic: http://samroberts.fotopic.net/p30858891.html)

I'd like some ideas on where else to put freehand/writing/seals etc. :) Also, I'm running low on ideas to fill up the top of the hull, I was thinking of freehanding an Iron Halo, Imperial Laurels, Termie honours and the like, since this is my command squad's transport and they will have these honours. Any other ideas would be groovy.

And some more angles for Unique1:

Front (http://samroberts.fotopic.net/p30858892.html)

Front-top (http://samroberts.fotopic.net/p30858894.html)

Rear quarter (http://samroberts.fotopic.net/p30858895.html) showing CHIMNEYS.

Bird's eye view (http://samroberts.fotopic.net/p30858893.html) showing all the extra bits - the sponsons, obviously, plus chimneys (1), top hatch (2) and glacis (3).

25-06-2006, 20:17
Thanks loads mcmullet, i'm investing in one for my iron hands deffo.

I'm loving the scripture, you paint very nicely.

27-06-2006, 22:19
Good for you! And thanks. :)

I've done a bit more on the left hand side now.

A few Icons and such on the front:

The rear (I'm not too sure how that gold plate thing has turned out - does it look weathered and old or just like shoddy painting?):

And here's a close up of the front right hand side finished.

Gallery here (http://samroberts.fotopic.net/p30974818.html).

C&C welcome as ever.

This is beginning to look very nice indeed. Living proof that you just can't put too much scripturey writing on Space Marine tanks. That aquila especially is very good, a noticeable improvement on your last might I add.

Ah well. Now I'm off to spruce up my Land Raider. :D

30-06-2006, 23:16
Cheers Jim. Have fun!

Well, it's finished! Er, sort of, anyway. I'm aware there are some splodges of red around the sponson, which I'll fix, but if any of you eagle-eyed WarSeerers can spot anything else I've missed then I'll be much obliged. :)

I've left the top clear of freehanding for the moment - I may come back to it later. also, I've done some mud weathering.

Really nice job. Hugely impressed! lets see some more of the army

01-07-2006, 00:39
how did you get the nice red colour

01-07-2006, 01:43
Me like it alot!..

And the mud weathering was the dot over the i for me.. very nicely done imnho.. ;)

The name tag you get away with.. =)

01-07-2006, 07:16
Well I have to admit to not liking Marines all that much, I usually find them a bit too "clean" but your tank McMullet is damn nice.

I love your freehand and all the little details just finish it off nicely without being too busy.

Congrats on a job well done.

01-07-2006, 12:17
Love it, very neat, and lovely rich colour, but maybe the mud on the door-plate is *too* neat? ;)

01-07-2006, 13:58
Thanks all, glad you like it! :)

lets see some more of the army

All in good time... Only a couple of units to do and I'll put the whole lot up.

how did you get the nice red colour

Started with a Scorched brown base, then mixed in a little blood red, then more blood red, until finally painting on pure blood red. Highlights are a mix of fiery orange and blood red. Red is a bugger to get even though, I had to do lots (probably a few dozen) of layers of very watered down paint on the sponsons to get it fairly even, and it still looks worse in real life than on the pics. :(

Love it, very neat, and lovely rich colour, but maybe the mud on the door-plate is *too* neat? ;)

So spoke the voice in my mind. I'll try and make that more untidy. Thanks! :)

01-07-2006, 15:08
Will we be seeing this at the Social?

01-07-2006, 15:34
I can bring it if you like, but I'm sitting on the stage and collecting results cards again... ;)

01-07-2006, 16:08
I love it McMullet. The landraider looks very nice. Great paint job. Especially on the red areas. the red looks nice and smooth. I also like the highlighting and shading on the blue. The freehand on the writing looks very good as well.

04-07-2006, 14:00
Great Job, you motivated me to get my own for my Howling Griffons.

06-07-2006, 17:20
I can bring it if you like, but I'm sitting on the stage and collecting results cards again... ;)

Ohh well, someone has to do it!

06-07-2006, 17:34

06-07-2006, 20:23
very nice work indeed!!!

Would love to see more of the army

06-07-2006, 22:41
Thanks again chaps. :)

I've realised there's a bit more to be done, I meant to convert some bigger smoke launchers and stick a searchlight on, so there'll be one more update at some point, perhaps that'll be when I finish the army (not too much to go now).

07-07-2006, 00:11
Well I love the look of it. I never sighted you as being as talented as you are, may I ask... is there a Mrs McMullet?

07-07-2006, 00:16
Cor looka that!

07-07-2006, 10:20
Well I love the look of it. I never sighted you as being as talented as you are, may I ask... is there a Mrs McMullet?
Sadly not... maybe I could draw myself a Mrs. McMullet's Avatar though.

Anyone have any ideas on the smoke launchers? I was thinking of making some Ork stikkbomb chukka-esque ones, using small wheel hubs for the ends. Not sure how to do the bracket that fixes it to the vehicle though...

the dark angel
07-07-2006, 12:52
the bright colours...they burn!!!!!make them less ultra and more rogal dorns crimson fists but on the whole good job;)

28-08-2006, 22:55
The last set of pics are too bright again...

I blame the photographer! Oh, that's me then. Darn.

The exposure was too long, the pics in this post give a btter idea of the real colour... http://www.warseer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=770013&postcount=35

And finally... I've done the smoke launchers. Sorry for the threadmancy, but starting a new thread for 3 grammes of plastic just seemed silly. They're made from plastic wheel hubs, those tubes you get to protect paintbrushes, greenstuff and those little random bracket things you get on the SM vehicle sprue. I was aiming for a solider, more traditional look for them, to fit in with the rest of the tank.

Painted and in place (with, I've just realised, the blue looking too bright, again. *sigh*):

Comments and criticism are most welcome, as ever!

28-08-2006, 22:58
Nice job mate!

Me like!

bobert the great clen one
28-08-2006, 23:08
o mcmullet you tease me so

29-08-2006, 00:03
Great work, seriously very characteristic little conversion there, I love the richness of the colours (from the picture you linked to), just incase I didn't mention it before :).

29-08-2006, 08:50
Very nice land raider.

29-08-2006, 09:52
Thank you gentlemen. :)

If anyone fancies seeing it in the flesh (plastic/resin), Rich 123 will be using it at the Carnage Social this weekend.
