Hi - ive been slowly lured across from 40K to WFB, and am thinking of going for dark Elves, and am looking for an initial army that is competitive (and ideally forgiving for a first-timer) and that uses models that I like. I was thinking of running:

LORD
Sorceress (Level 2)

CORE
20 Warriors (full command and shields)
20 Warriors (full command and shields)
10 Corsairs (full command and repeater bow)

SPECIAL
5 Cold One Knights (full command)

SPECIAL
Hydra

The plan is that I have the warriors as a solid core, the corsairs for shooting and the Knights and Hydra for flank attacks (I read that this was the best tactic for DEs).
As it stands, I have 80pts left over, so Im guessing that would be best spent on artifacts etc for the Lord, right?

I would advise against Dark Elf warriors. While not bad, they are more dependent on support compared to your other Core choices. Assemble them as Crossbowmen as 2 groups of 10, and then use the leftover points to beef up the corsairs.

Alternatively you can invest in Dark Riders to keep the pace with your Cold Ones.

Hi - so warriors arent bread and butter type troops?

They aren't very good at doing damage or very good at receiving it. Without support they tend to do little.
The above mentioned troops are just better at it.

ah, gotcha. So, something like this instead?

LORD
Sorceress (Level 2)

CORE
10 Warriors (repeater crossbows & full command)
10 Warriors (repeater crossbows & full command)
20 Corsairs (full command and extra weapon)

SPECIAL
5 Cold One Knights (full command)

RARE
Hydra

which gives me 30pts left over.
Would the initial strategy still be the same: using the corsairs as the main core, and using the warriors for shooting and knights/hydra for flanks?

This sounds fine for 1000 points. I suggest dropping the banner\champion on Warriors and leave them with just musicians. You can use the leftover points to buy stuff for your Sorceress.

Thanks! I was thinking of going for dawnstone and focus familiar to boost attack and defence

Ok so I just noticed you are using the 7th edition Dark Elf book, so you should probably go get the new 8th edition book because a lot has changed.

I don't think I can comment any more on your army because points costs are totally different now.

Also, Dawnstone shouldn't be taken on your Sorceress because she doesn't have an armour save to re-roll so it doesn't do anything.

oops, yes my bad. I was using an older version of army builder. Ive updated it now and have this:

LORD
Sorceress (Level 2)

CORE
10 darkshards (repeater crossbows & musician)
10 darkshards (repeater crossbows & musician)
20 Corsairs (full command and extra weapon)

SPECIAL
5 Cold One Knights (full command)
Hydra (fiery breath)

which leaves just 15pts now for upgrades to the Sorceress

hi - sorry one final quick question, if i was thinking of going to 1250pts and not 1000, would i be ok:
* adding a Level 4 supreme sorceress (with the channelling staff)
* and keeping the other sorceress as level 2 and giving her something else for 30pts?

If not, ill stick with 1000pts for now :-)

1250 pts is my favourite game size - it's fast and fun. A level 4 would be a great choice if you can squeeze it in. An army battle standard is a good idea too, yes dark elves have good leadership but they can stiill benefit from re-rolling Ld tests. You may wish to consider bringing standards for fortitude as well.

Hi - i could add a standard bearer (with dawnstone) but would have to drop the level 2 sorceress - is this what you mean?

Solid 1k list there. When going to 1250 I wouldn't bother taking a Level 2 in addition to Level 4, a bit overkill and wasted on a poor Winds of Magic roll. Adding Repeater Bolt Thrower and unit of Dark Riders for re-direction would be better for 1250.
