The local GW Bunker I go to is working BFG into their Medusa V campaign. Since I am playing Witch Hunters, my fleet will be Imperial Navy. I never played BFG before and started to read the rules, so I sort of know what I am doing. We are going to try 1k of a fleet. This is what I am thinking

Mars Battle Cruiser(Admiral with ld8)
Dominator Cruiser
Lunar Cruiser(With Torpedos)
Dauntless Light Cruiser
Dauntless Light Cruiser
3 Cobra Destroyers

Any thoughts?

looks good to me
some may comment that you have no escorts but i think the two dauntless will do very nicely

What tends to work better for the Dauntless? Lances or Torpedos? I have the Cobra for swift torpedoing, but I havent played before so I never seent he differences in effectiveness upclose.

Lances or Torpedos?

Depends what you are playing against. Against certain enimies different weapons are more or less effective. I personally like torpedo's on small manouverable craft to try and out manouver enemy ships and hit them with close range torpedoes (fired only when they will hit that phase). Against eldar who can out manouver you fairly easilly it becomes a different story. Lances are good against ships that have good deffence against ordenance and when you can hit the ship hard with weapons batteries first.

It is good all-round fleet. That is awesome for the Bunker to have Gothic going on during the campaign. I am thinking of trying to set up a Epic Game day as well.

For basic strategy, is it wise to fire off the torpedos on the first turn when there's great distance btween you and the enemy? I am thinking that might be a way to limit his initial movement with the torpedos incoming, then reload next turn. I figure might as well have both Novas fire immediatly, then reload asap for a second shot before the 30 cm distance is reached, although the mars might stand a bit futher back than the rest since it has longer ranged weapons.

Thanks again.

Firing the Torpedos off immediately can restrict movement a little. The big thing is combining Torpedos hitting a target along with Bombers. This causes the target to choose between the two making Torpedos more effective. Also a bunch of Torpedos entering a formation of some kind can do more damage than targetting a single vessel. Novas the same applies but can start targetting earlier. So Novas in the first two turns and on turn two target them again with Novas followed by torpedos. Just one technique.

i would go torps over lances
especially against eldar

especially against eldar

The Eldar doesn't care about torps just as much as about lances - 2+ save against both of them.

against eldar torps combined with fighters are better than lances. no?

Against Eldar your best option is actually massed Weapons Batteries Fire. You do not get as many possible hits but the low armor and no shields almost makes up for it.

Against an Eldar fleet I would not rely on Torpedeos or Bombers against Eldar, Fighters to stop the Eldar Ordance, Weapons Batteries to damage the Eldar ships which are fragile.

but we were talking about the options for the Dauntless, choosing between 3 lances and 6 torpedoes with respect to eldar

And on the subject of one vs another...

What about the Gothic vs the Lunar? Are the Gothic's stronger lances worth giving up for the batteries of the Lunar ?

From a background perspective the Torpedeos are only on two ships. Lances come standard. I would go with Lances on the Dauntless, they will be very useful against other fleets, while they are just as effective as Torpedeos against Eldar.

I prefer the Lunar in a new fleet. It is a verstile ship of the line and able to handle itself well in battle. I see the Gothic more as a support vessel to other Capital ships, lending its lances as killing blows once ships like Lunar & Tyrants have let loose their weapons batteries. Pairing a Gothic and Dominatator however will of course be very effective.

I personally favor the use of torpedo bombers.
