View Full Version : Building the Cadian 3rd Armoured core.

22-06-2006, 15:32
So i have a problem...

...I love tanks! I have been collecting IG for about 5 years and the reason is the tanks.

So when deciding what to build for the Medusa V campaign and give me something to do for the next 14 weeks i decided to build an armoured company, based upon the Chapter approved Army list. Most of the army is on order so cannot really do much yet. I have 2 Leman Russ battle tanks to work on while i wait for stuff to arrive.

The plan is to build and paint a 2500pt Armoured company by the end of September, this is the planned list i am gonna work with:

Leman Russ Exterminator (Command Tank) w/ Hull mounted Heavy Bolter, Sponson mounted Heavy Bolters, improved comms and Dozer Blade @240pts

Leman Russ Vanquisher (Tank ace) w/ Hull mounted Lascannon @255pts

Leman Russ Vanquisher (Tank ace) w/ Hull mounted Lascannon @255pts

Leman Russ Battle Tank w/ Hull mounted Heavy Bolter and Sponson Mounted Heavy Bolters @155pts

Leman Russ Battle Tank w/ Hull mounted Heavy Bolter and Sponson Mounted Heavy Bolters @155pts

Leman Russ Battle Tank w/ Hull mounted Heavy Bolter and Sponson Mounted Heavy Bolters @155pts

Leman Russ Battle Tank w/ Hull mounted Heavy Bolter and Sponson Mounted Heavy Bolters @155pts

Leman Russ Battle Tank w/ Hull mounted Heavy Bolter and Sponson Mounted Heavy Bolters @155pts

Leman Russ Battle Tank w/ Hull mounted Heavy Bolter and Sponson Mounted Heavy Bolters @155pts

Sentinel Squadron, 2 Sentinels armed with Lascannons and 1 armed with Searchlight @111pts

Armoured Fist Squad, 7 Guardsmen armed with Lasguns, 1 Guardsmen with Plasmagun and 2 Guardsmen Heavy weapon team armed with Missile Launcher @85pts

Chimera w/ Hull mounted Heavy Bolter and turret mounted Autocannon, Extra Armour, Dozer Blade, Track Guards and Smoke Launchers @113pts

Armoured Fist Squad, 7 Guardsmen armed with Lasguns, 1 Guardsmen with Grenade Launcher and 2 Guardsmen Heavy weapon team armed with Heavy Bolter @78pts

Chimera w/ Hull mounted Heavy Bolter and turret mounted Autocannon, Extra Armour, Dozer Blade, Track Guards and Smoke Launchers @113pts

Leman Russ Demolisher (Support Tank), w/ Hull mounted Heavy Bolter, Sponson mounted Heavy Bolters and Dozer Blade @160pts

Leman Russ Demolisher (Support Tank), w/ Hull mounted Heavy Bolter, Sponson mounted Heavy Bolters and Dozer Blade @160pts

ARMY TOTAL: 2500pts

All the exterminators and vanquishers are going to be the FW kits. All of the chimeras will have Autocannon turrets, side skirts and the Imperial eagle back door from FW. The guardsmen will be made with the respirator upgrade packs and have bases made with the new urban basing kit.

The army is going to be painted in a grey, urban scheme. All with squadrin markings and tank numbers and will be split into squadrons, each with own colour markings.

Well theres a plan for the army, will get the two Russes assembled tonight and will start painting tommorow and i'll post some piccies tommorow of the first of many tanks. :D

22-06-2006, 16:21
Well, now I want to see all your tanks!!!

22-06-2006, 16:22
we want pics!!! the list looks good btw.

22-06-2006, 17:44
1, 2, 3, 4.... how many tanks!

If i've got this right, there's 72 heavy bolter rounds just from the leman russes

Insane Psychopath

cookiescrumble: I hope you do not forget to add in your 1500pts GT army for heat 1 AS well

Your armour company should be cool, I alway wanted to do a army of them for myself after seeing George Dellapina one. Might do in a few month time, but right now GT time for me.

But you promoise to stick with this project unlike your GT armies ;) Should be cool & i want to see photos & conversions.

Damn it, now I am going to make my own Armour company 1500pts list.

22-06-2006, 18:31
14 TANKS!!!!!
This is gonna be awesome!

23-06-2006, 09:19
Yeh, by the end of september i also have to have my 1500pts IG infantry army done and 2000pts of Skaven.

IP, I hope i am gonna stick with this one, the army has cost me about 400.

23-06-2006, 10:27
Some piccies, just the first Battle Tank. The first pic shows the markings, Blue Company, Green Squadron, 2nd Tank. The model is just basecoated at the moment, not to sure about camo scheme. Might just keep them a solid grey colour.

23-06-2006, 11:26
If anyone has any comments or questions feel free to voice them.

23-06-2006, 12:13
It's a grey tank. Don't just let it sit there, it's not going to paint itself you know.

The concept is cool, I like the idea of Commisar tanks, have you considered one of those?

The grey scheme will work, lots of paint washes needed, you probably don't have time for camo, maybe do that later. Keep up the good work.

Look for the IG Tread Head thread in P&T General, you'll get lots of ideas, feedback and support from thosed tank crazed nutters!

23-06-2006, 12:16
well i'd stick with transfers as the freehand isn't really fine enough.

For camo just find some army photos and try the schemes out.

Other than that there isnt much to say as its only the basecoat.

23-06-2006, 14:49
I am gonna do an ink wash in all the recesses. I will probably go to transfers as it will keep the numbers across the tanks exactly the same. Hoping to get this tank finished tonight.

23-06-2006, 18:41
This is what the side of the tank looks like now.

Just noticed that the lines on the front need tidying up.

Brush your teeth

Look for the IG Tread Head thread in P&T General, you'll get lots of ideas, feedback and support from thosed tank crazed nutters!

treadhead reporting :D

first of all the list looks pretty solid fot taking all comers.

on the colour scheme the thing id advise you consider is what will go with your guard infantry so you can easially combine the two armies (im currently trying to get my guard tanks to mach 3 infantry vatiants :()

keep up the good work and i look forward to seeing more

24-06-2006, 07:18
My infantry army is from a completely different regiment and has it's own tanks.

24-06-2006, 07:47
washes will be your friend, thought about redoing the numerals? maybe try to find a small stencil, or get some self adhesive, or decals.

24-06-2006, 07:56
the tank needs alot of washes i'd say, as its far too "flat" at the mo.

24-06-2006, 08:14
Just WIP at the moment, gonna ink around the rivets and recesses.

24-06-2006, 10:44
definately an improvement. Also;

1. i know this is just being annoying but i think that the transfers would look better swapped around. So the '2' looks like its sprouted a wing.

2. i don't know how well a wash over a transfer will work, but i'd say that it might work better after the inking.

3. using tape will neaten up those chevrons

basically just keep it up and don't lose interest!

28-06-2006, 10:10
A but of an update, nothing exciting. The first tank is nearly finished, will finish off later and post pics tonight.

Just bought myself a face mask so i don't die before i get to play with it!

Gonna get most of the tanks on the 16th July, so a little while to wait and will do the forgeworld order soon.

Also gonna be using the army in a campaign in my local store, using the experience thingy in the back of the rulebook. The army will be reduced to 2000pts for this, so this needs to be built by the 26th July.

29-06-2006, 15:21
Was thinking about the washes in the recesses. What is the best way to go about this?

Also the tank looks better then in the photos, i really suck at this photography crap.

08-07-2006, 09:03
So finally an update!

Got my FW order this morning so finally have something to work with, checked it all over and all is correct, so FW get a smilie from me :D . Also I have finished college now so should have more than enough time to get this army done.

I've toyed around with the list a little, and i'll post this up soon.

Anyway, today i am planning to get one of the battletank squadrons assembled. Need to build two battletanks and the vanquisher turret as already have a hull assembled with a lascannon and no sponsons.

I also mail ordered alot of the old exterminator heavy bolters for the battletanks.

I'll hopefully get the tanks done and post some piccies later (batteries are on charge.)

Expect regular updates on this project, as i said i have nothing to do apart from building and painting tanks for the next few weeks.

Also need a little encouragement from you guys (and girls  ), or it may turn out to be another army on ebay.

08-07-2006, 10:27
Good Good, I liked this project alot, I just hope that you finish it, as It'll give me the boost to do my AC. Looking forward to the pictures!!

08-07-2006, 14:06
Been a busy morning, can't finish the tanks tonight as i have to work.

Heres some piccies of what i have built so far, all the pieces have been clipped out and cleaned so it is juat sticking them on.

The first squadron so far:

Battle Tanks:

Should have this squadron fully assembled tommorow. Then i will get them undercoated and start on my hellhound.

08-07-2006, 20:59
looking good paul. sept i dont like the guy in the vanqisher turret dont look right

Brush your teeth
08-07-2006, 21:26
yeah looking good. the guy in the turret ive got to agree, he almost looks to small but i guess it also makes the tank look bigger in a way. i think arms will improve his looks though :D

08-07-2006, 21:44
He's going to be peering out binoculars, i must admit that he looks small but that turret is huge!!! I'll leave him there as i want to have guys out the tops of some of the tanks.

For weathering i'm going to try those powders. No idea where to get them and only the slightest on how to use them.

08-07-2006, 21:53
Personally, a Watered down Chaos Black wash over these guys would do a world of good (a 70/30 Water/Paint mix)

08-07-2006, 22:53
Yeah just put washes all over the tanks, this will help darken them all down, and dirty them up, they are too flat just now, not being mean, its just if you just hit the recesses and rivets, they might still look too "clean" on the panels. Try adding some brown ink into the wash as well.
They look good in plain grey though, just need that wash.

08-07-2006, 22:56
you all realise that they arnt even painted yet, right?

09-07-2006, 09:36
I know they need washes! I'll have a pla around today.

I'm going to get those three tanks assembled fully this morning and hopefully will be able to spray them later (it's raining  ).

Cheers for the comments so far.

the dark angel
09-07-2006, 10:43
your doing well so far! like the vanquisher a lot,i know your pain,it will never stop raining .if it will stop ill have painting time (20 gaurdsmen will do me for the day:) )

10-07-2006, 12:29
Got the 3 tanks finished (piccies later), so i decided to build my hellhound.

The kit looked like it would be a good one to stick together, so first of all i cleaned all the bits up and scrubbed them with warm water and washing up liquid.

The tank is absolutely brilliant, love it too bits.

Heres some piccies:

The resin Bits (yes all 5 of them):

The track pieces, built these whilst the resin bits were in soak:

Hull piece:

All the plastic bit assembled:

10-07-2006, 12:31
Piccies of the finished article, was gobsmacked that the thing went together with no problems at all.

Got a bit of greenstuffing to do along the sides. I'll give an update when i'm done and when it stops raining so i can start painting them.

10-07-2006, 15:23
have you thought of making an indoor spray box?

get either an old Oven Hood with a exhaust fan in it or a Exhaust fan for a Bathroom Ceiling.
Flex hose for Clothes Dryer Vent or Aircondidtiong flex duct.
Build a box mount the fan in the top of it and run the vent out a window.

both fans are standard voltage so mount a extention cord plug to the end of it and plug it in. spray in the box and suck out the fumes.

Badger and Micromark also sells one commercially made but making your own would be hugely cheaper.

BTW love the FW hellhound

10-07-2006, 15:35
mmm...forgeworld hellhound,

i love that front hatch/door thing that replaces the normal little vision slit. if i wernet so poor i'd buy a few just for those

10-07-2006, 16:05
have you thought of making an indoor spray box?

i was thinking of this
you have any probs with "leaking" my misses would kill me if i ruined the house

on topic
these tanks are sweet
that fw hellhound is purty good, reel purty

*edit* th boltas on the tanks where are they from?
and why dont gw supply bolters for the front mounts on the russes?

10-07-2006, 16:31
you might get a slight smell, but i wouldnt think you would get any leaking. i would just put down a sheet for any chances of overspray, once or twice of that and you would have it figured out.

How many FW pieces are you adding to your AC? any of the thunderers or destroyers?

10-07-2006, 18:17
@ Wally , The heavy bolters are from the 3rd edition Exterminator. Had to mail order them, only £2 each.

@Orcdom, won't bother with thunderers or destroyers because i will have demolishers and vanquishers.

The FW stuff i ordered is as follows *Takes deep breath*

2 Vanquisher complete kits
2 Conqueror complete kits
2 Exterminator complete kits
1 Hellhound
1 Hydra Flak Tank
1 Tank commissar
2 Chimera Autocannon Turrets
2 Chimera eagle rear doors
2 Chimera side skirts

Thats all the FW stuff, will be getting the rest of the army Sunday and then full steam ahead.

If i decide on going to GD then i'll pick up a pair of Manticores, adding an artillery element to the army. If not i'll pick them up when i'm at the GT. I'm not to fussed at the moment as i have plenty to be getting on with.

That spraying box sounds like a good idea.

11-07-2006, 01:11

1 Tank commissar
2 Chimera Autocannon Turrets

That is quite a shopping list!:D
The FW Helhound looks like quite a nice model- if I hadn't already started mine when FW released it then I probably would have bought one.

11-07-2006, 01:52
i have seen a couple of the spray booths homemade online, and essentially thats all they are, if it isnt pulling enough suction, a faster motor for the little fan would probly work, the fans in bathroom exhaust kits are typically like the wheel in a hamster cage looking design.

either that or just add a second fan and run aanother piece of flex duct.

11-07-2006, 09:56
Was sunny this morning so got the tanks sprayed. I'll probably start painting today.

11-07-2006, 16:48
What kind of colour scheme can we expect?

11-07-2006, 16:48
Look back 2 pages....

Looking forward to pictures

:eyebrows: Looked like bare plastic to me (but apparently not).

:eyebrows: Looked like bare plastic to me (but apparently not).

Going for a grey urban scheme, they'll look better once i have weathered them which will come later.

12-07-2006, 08:30
I had to take a closer look to realise that they had indeed recieved a coat of grey paint. At first I wondered: "What is that guy doing putting transfers on before he's painted!" :D

19-07-2006, 20:32
35 models for 2500 points. Are you sure these armies can work (it looks like they're going to be hit hard by Imperial Guard armies with all those Lasguns, as well as the Lost and the Damned)?

21-07-2006, 18:11
There will be an update soon. Just been really busy.

21-07-2006, 18:39
Numbers dont matter technically, its how you use em. Having millions of troops is great unless you cant use them, or face a player who really knows how to use his.

Lets face it if you out number your opponent 2:1 on the table, or even 4:1, and you lose half of your troops then your already in trouble if you havent nearly won - thats where psychology comes in and it becomes a test of you as a general.

35 models? Yeh you'll be alright

02-08-2006, 06:53
*insert massive jealousy here* the tanks look amazing man, I'm in the process of making an AC as well so far i have: 2 Leman Russ's and a Chimera! lol and all three are fully painted! looking forward to more pics

03-08-2006, 12:45
An Update!!!!

Been real busy.

Anyway heres some pics;

The army so far:

The Chimeras, i've extended the track guards and i've also got the FW side skirts to put on these.

03-08-2006, 12:50
Storage solution solved:

The support Squadron, 2 Demolishers lead by a Conqueror Tank Ace.

03-08-2006, 12:54
First Squadron:

The exterminator command tank:

and the hellhound:

Thats what i have at the moment. Got another 4 Leman Russes to assemble, two standard battle tanks, and an exterminator commisar tank. Also have the hydra to build.

03-08-2006, 14:00
Nice work, loving it. Glad to see this army going along just fine (btw. I'm sorting out the insurance claim.)

03-08-2006, 15:35
your gonna undercoat them yes

03-08-2006, 15:51
He has, grey is the tank's scheme:)

03-08-2006, 16:31
your gonna undercoat them yes
:p That got me too.

I really like the FW Exterminator turret- much nicer than the GW one (it was a big factor in me not using the Exterminator). It's looking good. My AC has stalled out; all I've got done since my last post is all the tracks glued on- hardly newsworthy.

03-08-2006, 21:08
Some of them haven't been undercoated yet, ran out of spray and i am skint.

23-06-2007, 23:23
Hi, I love the project you're undertaking, looks like its gonna be really great, just one quick thing though... are you gonna put some tracks on your tanks or leave them as they are?

24-06-2007, 18:54
Closing thread.

Been nearly a year since the last update...
