Welcome all!

I've been looking round and became more curious on what armies to play as after I eventually complete an Empire army of my own, and I got looking at the newer Imperial units like the scions, and how they have a new codex as well...They look like some awesome models, and frankly I'd paint them to look like Helgast possibly, but I was wondering if you people think they'll release more models for the Tempestus, or whether they're more for just extra units in an Imperial Guard Army. I don't seem to have seen many of them discussed around here, so any opinions on them are fantastic, and whether they are actually a GOOD set of units on the board.

Thanks for reading!

((It really is a hard choice to choose between Space Marines, IG and these bloody fellas!))

At some point? Probably, but I wouldn't expect anything anytime soon, and I suspect they'll always feel a little like an add-on codex (not that this is a bad thing; I think more and more of these sort of books/data sheets will come out to support existing factions)

I've never faced or used them on the tabletop, but I think the troops themselves might struggle a bit due to being expensive for their duribility and having quite specialised weapons.

Given that the list was written around the (new) models; and besides Chimeras everything likely to be part of a Stormtrooper/Scion regiment is already represented, I wouldn't expect any new models.

I wouldn't be overly surprised if they ceased to be a seperate mini-faction when the next Codex: Astra Militarium comes around in a few years.

I have a Genestealer Cult army based around Militarum Tempestus and Genestealers, so I can tell you a bit about these guys:

They go great with Genestealers. They represent a great mid-close range firepower threat and they have maybe the best cheap transport option in the game with 2 krak missiles, and with their rather solid formation options, they can kit themselves out for a variety of roles.

They have numerous special weapons great for specializing in destroying things and are cheap enough that you can drop the hammer on super-heavy vehicles.

Their big problem they have is that they're expensive enough that they don't have a lot of ablative wounds(You don't want more than 5 models in an anti-vehicle mob because the AP3 lasguns don't do anything). In a target rich environment, like a Genestealer Cult, the enemy has to deal with the Genestealers that are in their face on round one, giving you the opportunity to swing in and mop up.

As a standalone, you could face an uphill battle(Not impossible) because you have no credible counter-attack.

In the short-midrange shooting game, there are very few people who can go toe-to-toe with them.

Tl;DR - Taurox Primes are awesome. Great shooting. Some holes in close combat and long range that are easily plugged with allies.

Thanks so far on the advice! I wasn't planning on a large army (2000-2500 points max) so they do sound pretty darn cool so far in small squads. I'd likely make mobs of average IG units, decent tanks and then roll these fellas up perhaps on the flank with the Taurox Prime or Chimera, get them up close to use on enemy vehicles and BOOM. They do sound cool, and hen I start, I hope they do well! (I may take a second if points are sparing- They look gorgeous!) So thankful I didn't make an entire army of these guys, at least gives me some free reigns over IG then!

I love them! Bought the army box for them.

Pros

- Deep strike on all squads so great alpha strike units (2 melta guns in squad of five LESS than 100pts!)
- Models models models - enough said, no wait..MODELS!!!
- Nice choice of weapons to get the job done, as long as the job calls for 24" or less!
- EXCELLENT transports
- For some reason fully kitted out Valkyrie is about 10pts cheaper than the Astra Militrum version
- Nice Warlord traits
- Nice orders
- Nice formations

CONS

- NO access to melta bombs for some reason other than the Lord Commisar!
- Limited HQ choices
- No Commisar formation
- Zero close combat abilities
- Expensive for points cost, you run out of room really fast!

Ideal solution...

Take a pure force of Scions and add 1-2 Imperial Knights to provide long-range firepower and close combat AND amazing models!

If you pick IG you can still use Militarum Tempestus units, but you have more options when it comes to tanks, infantry, fliers, special characters and ab humans.

MT might get some new units, but i expect it would be one unit at most, IG would get it too and it wouldn't come out for a fair number of years.

As a TL;DR of the Tempestus book, basically you get DS'ing carapace vets with AP3 lasguns with shorter range and cost as much as Space Marines, they can take Taurox Primes and Valkyries, you can get an HQ scion squad, and take commissars, and they get nothing else from the IG book.

Really, the army doesn't function particularly well, you have to rely on T3 4+sv Ld8 infantry or AV11 tracked tanks to do all of your killing, it's kind of neat on paper, but really just falls flat on its face as an army of its own. The infantry are too expensive, struggle to hurt anything, and have trouble staying on the field, the vehicles are either very easy to remove or don't pack much firepower, and neither are expensive. The inbuilt formations and order help, but they only go so far. Really, they work best as an allied contingent filling a niche the rest of the main army doesn't have filled. On their own, they're kinda like Dark Eldar, but without any of the ability to harness Jink effectively (aside from on Valks) or FNP bonuses or the higher Ld, and significantly less range available to the army as a whole.

Like others, I don't think we're likely to see new MT units anytime soon. However, I can see them expanding the list to incorporate more units into their list should Games Workshop decide to expand on them. Perhaps Bullgryns (for melee) and Sentinels (for heavy weapons). At best, we may see new special characters unique to their codex sometime down the line.
