Let me introduce a boardgame prototype, general management, set in the second half of the thirteenth century.
The first version of the historical prototype I created a few years ago (1999), then in 2007 I showed for the first time to the public and since then I have constantly updated and fixed, both aesthetic and mechanical game.

I called MedioEvo Universalis (the word "universalis" used because you can manage your kingdom in all aspects).

MedioEvo Universalis is a management boardgame set in the second half of the thirteenth century. Players will have to manage one of the great Kingdoms, developing a commercial network, improving the technological evolution and weaving diplomatic pacts with other players. Many unforeseen events, including random events, disasters and barbaric peoples hinder military conquests and the creation of an Empire.

MAIN CHARACTERISTICS:

- Number of players: 3-5 with BASE box, 6-10 with EXPANSION box. Added the "dead", which has rules to reinforce himself, attack and rebel territories of players poor defended.

- Terrain: various types of terrain combined with city's fortifications and technologies give modifiers for movements and overpopulation.

- Trade: players have at their disposal sea and land transportations to trade 8 types of goods in 36 cities on the map to earn florins.

- Technological advancement: 38 technologies deployed in 6 families on a maximum of 4 levels improve their Reign in economy, trade, military and diplomacy. These technologies implement the features of other playing cards or allow to protect yourself from Calamities.

- Very rare events: calamities can disrupt and modify a lot all strategies... If the player is prepared, he will able to survive almost unscathed, otherwise ...

- Random Events: a series of positive and negative random events, but less catastrophic, will hit the various areas of land or sea in which the map is divided: storms, missions required by the Pope, tournaments between players, merchants who offer trade … etc.

- Development: the player has the opportunity to expand their cities, increase the fortifications and defenses, armies, military and commercial transport... and more.

- Playing cards: allow to improve armies and defenses, the construction of fortifications, taxes, diplomacy, the purchase of new mercenary's armies ... etc.

- Combat: the combination of technologies with the card game allows you to get a bonus set of modifiers during battles... and how about a nice Crusade? Don't forget to Corsairs, pirates and Mongol invasions.

- Diplomacy: 6 diplomatic options and Casus Belli with other players; 1 player also controls the Pope and must organize the Crusades... if the others Christian kingdoms try to refuse, Pope can excommunicate them... and if the Mamluks conquered Rome?

- Expansion: the player is invited to expand his Kingdom to create an empire.

- AIM of the game: get the most Honor Points from the various aspects of the game as: military expansion, killing an enemy General, conquering a Kingdom, winning a crusade, completing a mission of the Pope … etc.

OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

Each player has to start match one of the major Kingdoms of the era:
Sultanate of Hafsids
Kingdom Mamluks
Horde gold
Byzantine Empire
Novgorod Republic
Kingdom of Hungary
Holy Roman Empire
Kingdom of France
Kingdom of Castile
Kingdom of England

Map is modular, divided in SET BASE according to play up to 3-5 players and 3 EXPANSIONS to play up to 10! The player has available land and sea units to trade 8 different types of goods in 36 cities on the map, so fiorini obtained can be invested to increase the cities, building fortifications, buy new units, recruit new General, build siege machines or new cathedrals/mosques to have more control over the population, specialize the cities in a commercial sector, and more.

With fiorini also you can buy technologies to improve some aspects of the game; technologies are divided into 5 kinds, up to 3 layers, so if I will have STREETS, I must buy ARCHITECTURE and MATHEMATICS before yet.
The technologies also help me to eliminate or reduce the effects of CALAMITIES: MEDICINA against PLAGUE, AGRICULTURE against FAMINE, etc etc etc.

There are also game cards, named EMPIRE that allow the player to do more things: spying your opponent's cards, earn more by trade, taxing better territories, ask truce during a war, get bonuses during attack or defence etc etc etc.
Many of these cards have combinations with technologies, for example the GENIUS has + 1 bonus during attack or defence, but if it is accompanied by the ENGINEERING he take + 2 bonus... and so on... MERCHANT with COINS, TEMPLARE with MONOTHEISM, MERCENARY with ARMY etc etc etc.

As you may have noticed, I used the colors to help you learn many components of game, there are references and descriptions on each card and also I inserted in front of the player a summary of the game turn and 3 summary tables of classic 50 questions that a player always stolen ... so I have dramatically reduced learning time and in fact, when I played with my friends younger (13-14 years) the thing was very useful.

In addition to CALAMITIES cards there are random events which affect only 1 areas of the map; I added other units on the map, the neutral (or dead, barbarian, as you prefer), which with simple automatic rules can expand its neighbours or attack weaker player or rebel territories with low defense... to move even more the game.

The territories have 5 different terrain types: plain, hill, forest, mountain, desert and in addition the rivers ... all this leads to limits of population or costs in movement.

Also diplomacy: there are 6 diplomatic options that can be broken at any time (so look back!), obviously players take consequences (for example, if a player Christian declares war to another Christian would almost certainly the excommunication of the Pope and therefore would fall out of favor).

The sequence of players is random, if now you are the 1st, in the next turn you could be the 3rd or last ... pay attention to your enemies!

Object of the game is to get as many HONOR POINTS ... during the game, depending on what you do, you may gain or lose HONOR POINTS.
So you can play: by TIME, with a MAX NUMBER of points to reach or with a defined number of TURNS.

And after several years of waiting, of a long process of modifications and research, conventions, playtesting, discussions on forums to turn my prototype in a real game ... in the end I did it!

The Giochix http://www.giochix.it/ has officially announced will launch MedioEvo Universalis on giochistarter and kickstarter.

Still do not believe ... :D :D :D

Probably the news has already reached any part of the world, but better confirm it on official way! Medioevo Universalis, the gargantual game made by Nicola Iannone, will be on Giochistarter! We still have to schedule the campaign, but probably it will be live on the first months of 2016.

Spread the news!

I went back to work on the 3D map because I have some free time ...

Here the combination of all the colors of the various Kingdoms: http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2063&p=16125#p15495

Now I'm starting to look at trees, snow-covered fir trees and palms to order, I thought of using those with the stand or those to be inserted into a small hole (I would do with a nail on the map); Capochino on his forum suggested me use magnets to hook / unhook them from the map, I found different solutions on this, from the magnetized sheets to the magnets thin: http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2063&p=16125#p16120
Does anyone have any other ideas?

Kingdoms coloration practically over, are missing only two small:

Next STEP will sauted all the borders between the territories.

I ordered the trees, snow-covered fir trees and palms (all high between 35 and 45 mm.), I will use the thin magnets glued to the pedestal and to the map:

I started to draw all the borders between the territories, it will be a very long work and patience:

Final corrections before publication by the Giochix...

I know that there are many errors in the names of the territories, it's something that I never corrected by 1999.

My territories do not correspond to the duchies, so it is not so easy ... the best solution would be to choose the Province/Region more important or more famous historically and use that name for the "macro-region "that I used to split the territories of my map.

If someone had the desire and time to verify the information here below, I would be very grateful.

Let's start with Spain, as usual...
I have some doubts:
- Aragon or Zaragoza? Probably better Aragon.
- Douro, Portucale and Coimbra? On BGG they had recommended Duoro, but also Portucale (which would be the first County that gave birth to the Kingdom of Portugal) should be fine.

http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/images/MAPPA/MedioEvo_Universalis_SPAGNA_new.jpg

I continue with France... probably will be made changes:
- "Fiandra" will become Flanders (sorry for this mistake).
- Orlean is perhaps a little too west, it is better to change its name and perhaps use the Maine.
- The Guyenne is better if I rename Aquitaine.
- The Lorena should become Lotaringia?
The rest should go pretty well:

http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/images/MAPPA/MedioEvo_Universalis_FRANCIA_new.jpg

With England I have some doubts...Probably should be made some changes, but I'm not sure:
- For Scotland, if I keep using Highlands and Lowlands, perhaps it would be better to use Uplands instead of Galloway.
- For England it is better to use Durham instead of Cumbria?
- Better Cornwall instead of Sussex?
- Better Yorkshire or York?
- In Ireland, better Desmond instead of Munster?

http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/images/MAPPA/MedioEvo_Universalis_INGHILTERRA_new.jpg

With Italy can not do much, at that time it was divided into small kingdoms / Lordships / republics / Communes ... impossible to represent all and difficult to give a name to each of my territories ...
I think the best solution is to leave everything as it is, using the names of regions enough important at the time ... I'm not sure that there was already the concept of "TRIVENETO", at best, we could correct for "VENETO".

http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/images/MAPPA/MedioEvo_Universalis_ITALIA_old.jpg

Holy Roman Empire I have only one doubt...Lotharingia is probably a little too far south, but I would not know what name to give that territory ... PALATINATE or BADEN?
http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/images/MAPPA/MedioEvo_Universalis_GERMANIA_new.jpg

61 Kingdoms, should be quite faithful to reality even if, for example, the heraldry of the Russian principalities at that time was not well defined ... the same for a couple of Islamic kingdoms of north west Africa.

Back to the final correction of the map ... it's up to North Africa ...
Here are pretty ignorant, so really I need your help to give the name correctly as possible to the various territories ... THANK YOU from now who will help me :)

DATE: 1265

North Western Africa, older version:

Version of the PC game Crusader Kings II:
http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/images/MAPPA/CK2_1266_AFRICA01.jpg

Changes I would make:
WESTERN SAHARA become ANTI ATLAS
MAURITANIA (which is much more shifted than my map) become MARRAKECH (although I do not like to give the same name of the city, such as the region of Tangier)
I wanted to change also WESTERN ATLAS and EASTERN ATLAS, but I found nothing of value.

Version of the PC game Crusader Kings II:
http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/images/MAPPA/CK2_1266_AFRICA02.jpg

Changes that I could do:
KAIROUAN I would like to change it, but I do not know if it becomes MEDJERDA, CONSTANTINE or BISKRA ... I would be more inclined to MEDJERDA.
DJERBA, TRIPOLITANIA and LEPTIS MAGNA are all in TRIPOLITANIA, but I would not know which names to give... or leave them so, or thought I rename them WESTERN TRIPOLITANIA, MIDDLE TRIPOLITANIA and EASTERN TRIPLOLITANIA...

I do not know, maybe it is good all so ... I'm not sure that the term Jordan was already in use, but it seems already used in Roman times ... better change it?

Version of the PC game Crusader Kings II:
http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/images/MAPPA/CK2_1266_MedioOriente.jpg

Changes I would make:
the PHRYGIA become LIDIA
GALATIA become PHRYGIA or ERACLEA (or NICEA?)
AZERBAIJAN would return MESOPOTAMIA as I had done long ago.
I do not really like DESERT SYRIAC, but SYRIA've already used for the Principality of Antioch.

Version of the PC game Crusader Kings II:

doubts:
SLOVAKIA is perhaps the right ... otherwise what was his name?
PEST is definitely wrong, at most it should be on the left bank of the Danube and not on the right bank where there is Buda... so how could I call this territory?

Version of the PC game Crusader Kings II:
http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/images/MAPPA/CK2_1266_EUROPACENT.jpg

Doubts:
Better PODLESIA or Podlachia?
Instead of CARINTHIA probably it should STIRIA that best represents the area south of the Danube.
I would change BIG POLAND and SMALL POLAND, but I would not be what to put ...

http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/images/MAPPA/Regioni_Europa_Centrale.JPG

http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/images/MAPPA/Invasioni_mongole_principati_russi.jpg

Apart from the huge mistake of having reversed the position of some Russian principalities (Tver instead of Smolensk, Smolensk instead of Chernigov, Chernigov instead of Kiev) ... a Russian lady made me doubt during one of the last convention I attended, the Italian husband wanted to let go, but she insisted and indeed she was right :)
I do not really like the idea of giving the Russian principalities of the same name to the territory.
PODLACHIA (or PODLESIA) would have already used in the previous map of CENTRAL EUROPE with the Principality of Galicia and Volyn ... then maybe I should leave here PODLACHIA (or PODLESIA) and in CENTRAL EUROPE use Volyn?
SARPA better use instead of CHUVASHIA?
CAZARIA can go?
BOGUTJAR ??? It would be better a more catchy name or known ...

Doubts:
I think do not have any, but then on BGG I have received a PM:

I've been looking at your impressive game, but as a native Norwegian with an interest in history, I would like to point out that three of the names you've selected for the Norwegian regions are strange and atypical.

A better representation would have been to use 'Bergenhus' for the region represented as 'Oppland', 'Nidaros' for 'Lapponia', and 'Telemark' or 'Akershus' for 'Hedmark'.

Oppland and Hedmark are modern names for rural counties of no historical, or political importance, and the real location of Oppland lies within the borders of your 'Hedmark' region. To a Norwegian and Scandinavian audience, the use of 'Hedmark' and 'Oppland' are just bizarre. It's comparable to placing Rome in Campobasso.

Lapponia is a historical province of Sweden (and Finland) and lies outside the boundaries of Norway. A more interesting name would be Nidaros, considering that Nidaros was an important archbishopric in Nothern Europe, prior to the reformation.

The proper modern contemporary names for the three divisions you've used would be 'Østlandet', 'Vestlandet' and "Midt-Norge', which just means 'East country', 'West country' and 'Middle Norway', but 'Bergenhus', 'Akershus' and 'Nidaros' would be better terms as these were the important administrative divisions in use by the late 15th century.

Bergenhus actually encompassed the entire Northern Norway north of Trøndelag/Nidaros, as well as the territories surrounding Bergen. In terms of surface area, Bergenhus was probably the largest "county" in Europe at the time (outside of Russia).

Stumbled on this thread, your depiction of Sweden is all wrong.
Take a look at these:
Svealand:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svealand#/media/File:Sverigekarta-Landsdelar_Svealand.svg
Götaland (not Götland):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6taland#/media/File:Sverigekarta-Landsdelar_G%C3%B6taland.svg

The Crusader Kings II map is mostly correct, make special note of the Danish parts in southern Sweden, they're smaller than on your map, and Scania is one of the three regions (the big one to the south).

Good luck with your game. :)

THX mrtn, I corrected some things now that you told me :)
Tell me something more if you find other mistakes... look the image below please...

NEW ENGLISH SECTION on the forum: http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=48 I created this section of the forum to allow foreigners to read how the prototype originated and evolved and what are the game mechanics and components... If you have questions, write me on this section of the forum, You are Welcome! :)

I do not know if I'll have time to do it every day, but I will try to do that too ... I will keep here the updated image (as possible) with the work in progress that I'm making on the final map, the research on heraldry, the names of territories, etc etc ...

It's still not right. ;) Götaland is a classic Swedish region (one of the three main ones), and you've made it Danish. Only the south-west half of it (comprising of the three landscapes Halland, Skåne (Scania) and Blekinge) should be Danish, the north-east should be Swedish.
I'd either give that area to Svealand (if you have to keep the number of regions for balance), or make a new Swedish region called Götaland, which should take parts of your Götaland, and parts of your Svealand. Call the Danish stump Scania.
Or make the Danish parts of nowadays Sweden part of Zealand (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zealand), which is the most important part of Denmark, and the place of their capital Copenhagen. It doesn't seem to be a square on your map, and that feels wrong.

If I'd made a game map where I'd joined Corsica and Sardinia into one island, and given that to France you might feel like I do. :D

I understand now:

http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/images/MAPPA/MedioEvo_Universalis_SCANDINAVIA_new2.jpg

but I can't, sorry... for the balance of the game the Kingdoms NPC can have a maximum of 4 territories... in this case for the Kingdom of Sweden there are 5 territories: Götaland, Svealand, Norrland, Finlandia and Carelia...
So I could leave the border between Götaland and Scania in this position and remove Götaland or Svealand... tell me please the best solution...

My boardgame is set in 1265, I can't join Corsica and Sardinia into one island.

Also I can not create the territories too small, otherwise there is no enough space for miniatures ... That's why Scania was so great ... The same thing I had to do in Italy, I had to eliminate all the little territories (Pisa, Siena, Verona, etc etc) and I had to decide which were more important to represent

I printed on ordinary paper all the texts to be applied on the 3D map http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2063&p=16622#p16618 ...
http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/images/MAPPA/MedioEvo_Universalis_TESTI_02.jpg

Then I created a scheme to place all the trees, pines and palms http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2063&p=16622#p16621 ...
http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/images/MAPPA/MedioEvo_Universalis_ALBERI_12.jpg

I cut all the texts and placed the whole (including trees, cities and heraldic shields) on the 3D map http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2063&p=16622#p16622 ...

The order of the texts printed on transparent adhesive film already, but I could not wait, could not resist a preview with some miniatures placed on the map to better imagine the final effect ... more photos here: http://www.medioevouniversalis.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2063&p=16622#p16623

I discovered this game online a few weeks ago on boardgamegeek, and from there I signed up on giochix.it to await crowdfunding. I signed up to this forum just to respond to this game. When I was younger, I used to design boardgames a hobby to amuse myself and my friends, but I never took it seriously. However, when I saw MedioEvo Universalis, it looked just like the game that I always dreamed of making. This is truly a work of art!

I'm starting a big project ...;)
And if I could produce the 3D map in series with the costs, but above all of the times "reduced"? :-D :-D :-D

I made a simulation with a CNC machine for woodworking (and similar such as MDF, OSB, particleboard, plywood, etc.) and I have tried to simulate the working of a MDF panel of 30 mm. thickness, 3-axis machining with the various tools ... here is a first result applies to England:

The HERMIT version is WITHOUT miniatures, there are only cardboard pieces ... the other deluxe versions are all WITH miniatures and differ only in price, not in the components ... Therefore the first who join the campaign will have the cheaper version.

P.S.:
I remind everyone that those who view the page of the crowdfunding campaign with his cell phone does not see the pictures ... at the bottom of the page there is a link in red DESKTOP VERSION, this way you will see all the images as if you were in front of a computer.
