View Full Version : Which major SM chapter do you play?

I'm curious about the frequency of specific chapters in the 40k communities.

As above: which main, first founding chapter do you field? I'm also curious as to why you play that particular chapter.

Personally, I play Raven Guard. I picked it in specific for its fluff and the fact it looked to be a well balanced, fast, & tactical list. The fact the paint scheme was dark & easy to to didn't hurt either. so far the only real let downs are when I consider how nice it would be to drop a few tanks into my lists, but am severely limited.

Ultramarines 3rd Company - The Scourge of the Xenos

I'm rediculed all the time for playing Ultramarines, but it doesn't matter. Just because I play Ultramarines doesn't mean i'm some mindless conformist with no creativity or sense of individualism. But that's a rant in of itself, back on topic.

I play them because I like the way 3rd company looks! Blue marines with red shoulder rims just feel natural to me and are what I like to paint and see once all my hard work is through.

I like the third company because they are one of the main battle companies, and yet not very much official fluff is written for them. That way I have inspiration and something to work off of, yet don't have to worry about some big official story coming out and screwing up my background. Plus, the name is simple yet effective. Ultra - Why settle for less?

Also, now that I think of it, I've *never* heard of anyone else who plays 3rd company ultra. It's either 2nd company off the box, or they don't like ultramarines at all.

It also just so happens that my primary opponet plays Tyranids!

One last point: It may be called Codex: Space Marines, but in truth, it's Codex: Ultramarines, with a traits incerpt at the back.

Well I'm collecting Egil Iron Wolf's great company at the present moment. I already have Egil and his Wolf guard body guard (in Terminator armour), a Wolf priest, a Blood claw pack (in Rhino), two Grey hunter packs (in Rhinos), a Dreadnought, a Landspeeder, a Vindicator and a Land Raider.

As the company is named after the Iron Wolf I decided to go for a heavily mechanised theme to the army so all of my squads have transports and are backed up by a good array of tanks.

White Scars, they were my childhood sweetheart (they were in a battle report in the first WD I ever bought)

I still have my first army, the Dark Angels, sitting on the display shelf, all pretty looking and all. :)

I dont really play with them any more but I still have a small 1000ps or so of Blood Angels, but they are in need of a major revamp. I keep meaning to update them and give them a revamp but other projects always get in the way.

Thats great! I'll second everything of this.
I play Ultramarines 3rd company to (collecting the entire company).
What I like about....eh, just look at the quote.

Shockingly, it's.....Dark Angels. I was totally sold on the dark and sinister imagery right from the start (the black, spiky version in the RT rulebook), and it just seemed to get better and better (Deathwing, Ironwing, Raven wing, The hunt for the Fallen,).

Not a big fan of the (relatively) recent descent into overly insular and sneaky 'spanish inquisition' types though, especially the girly dresses.

I mean robes.:D

I love (and collect) Blood angels too. I mean the flawed-but-noble BA, not the poorly thought out chew-your-leg-off nutjobs we've been seeing recently. Brilliant imagery, and blood red armour just looks funky.

I've got around 3000pts of Dark Angels, which I started collecting when the 2nd generation rules came out.
I liked the look, the army structure and the fluff then, and I still do today. So much so that I'm about to start updating the paint job on my army, squad by squad, from the decent gaming standard they are now, to something a bit more in keeping with the more gothic, darker look that Marines in general are heading. I'm really looking forward to the new codex (Whenever it eventually turns up) and the chance to add some new models to what I already have :D

There's a link in my signature if anyone wants to have a look at some of my squads

Imperial Fists, I got started playing the Fists way back in the days of Space Crusade, it was an accident really, I was only 10 at the time and wanted to go the blue ones and we thought the Fists where the blue ones, funny how it works out!

I play Iron Hands, because they bring a chance to have such beautiful conversions. Their old army list in Index Astartes lll was actually quite good. While it is true that they starres in on of the black libraies worst books ever, they actually have a pretty intresting back story.

Dark Angels-

I fell in love with the dark, brooding countenance of the legion, its Hunt for the Fallen, and the twisted story of which faction is truly loyal.

Plus they are the legion the Emperor himself led, and pre-heresy they wore BLACK!!!!!!!

I didn't mention this in my post as it tends to annoy fluff nuts. But s'true. How cool is that????

Amongst others, Imperial Fists.

Because nobody else plays them around here.

Imperial Fists - I love the color scheme, and the bold attitude of Dorn himself. The quotation about his views on camo makes me smile everytime i read it. Such a bold color scheme, and with a bold battle strategy (scouts guiding in a huge mass of terminators and a siege dreadnaught) is hard not to resist.

Blood Angels- My first love, the most heroic and tragic of all marines. They are brooding, but not "emo" about it. They have some of the richest and most exciting background stories ever, like the story of Tycho, Moriar the Chosen, how Calistarius became Mephiston, Lord of Death, and of course the sacrifice of Sanguinius himself.

Ultramarines - I chose them for their incredibly flexible battle style. In my army, i have a little bit of everything the codex throws lets you take. VERY shooty, but makes you hurt when you try to close in and i come out after you. A very rewarding playstyle to me.

Space Wolves - Their fierce nature is interesting to see in a futuristic setting. Their sense of barbarity and yet nobility appeals to me, as does their nordic backdrop. Their playstyle of the hunter, with every unit capable to give punishment dearly, even when outnumbered, is impressive.

Imperial Fists because to me the look they dont care. i mean who would wear yellow in the middle of a battlezone unless you could could kick just about everybodys butt!! (only Chuck Norris can kick everybodys butt):p

You've read my mind :D

Its my first and foremost army, standing a battlecompany large, with support (tanks, some 30 odd terminators, some 12 odd bikes, speeders etc)

I guess I never mentioned my Raven Guard Company did I?

I run the 5th Company 'cause I've never seen anyone else do it before. I also paint the shoulderpads purple, not in defiance of the index astartes, but because it looks so much cooler against black.

I've been throwing around the idea of making another SM army, just smaller. I'm thinking maybe I'll go White Scars.

Of the founding chapters I currently use Ultramarines and Dark Angels.

I picked Ultramarines primarily because according to the fluff they're very strict to the codex and in their tactics, and this suited perfectly the force I had in mind. By that time Nightbringer was also released and I really fell in love with some of the imagery there.

Dark Angels are probably my favourites of the two though. The specialists, Deathwing and the Ravenwing offer some amazing conversion oppurtunities and add a lot of character to the army. Plus, they allowed me to play Space Hulk...

Ultramarines becasue I love the colour. I don't really care about the fluff around them and don't really know it that well anyway :)
