View Full Version : What are you doing now?

It has now been some weeks since AoS was released and I am interested to know what everyone is doing now to fulfil their hobby bug.

I was very disappointed with AoS the reasons why have been detailed on this forum a lot. I actually don't have any problem with the models and did buy the starter set. My biggest issue is the lack of a points or equivalent system.

I have been playing WFB since 1992 and 40k since 1995 and for the first time in more than 20 years I have purchased non GW stuff to fulfil my hobby needs.

I do intend to keep playing the 8th but the overall numbers have dropped massively so getting a game will be tough.

So going forward I have ordered

X-Wing core set and playmat I have heard many good things about this game
Flames of War Open Fire It was this or Bolt Action decided to go for the smaller scale and there was a greater choice of units in particular tanks.
Zombicide Again heard great things about this game and had thought about it for a while but was spending money on GW in the past.
Alien vs Predator The Hunt Begins Impulse buy I have not read any of the reviews but the models look fun to paint and looks similar in layout to Space Hulk.

So what are you all doing differently? What are you painting? What are you spending your hard earned money on?

What am I doing differently? Nothing really. I had already split from official rules (using the 6th edition Wood Elf army book instead of the 8th edition one) and official background (erasing the entire ET series from mine) when AoS hit, so I'm just continuing to past-hammer like I was doing before.

What am I painting? A regiment of Glade Guard at the moment, and then some Wardancers once that's done - all on square bases (and with a movement tray in the case of the Glade Guard) of course. I still have a very large backlog of models to go through before my Wood Elf army is finished, and once that's done there's some ships for my Battlefleet Gothic Tau fleet, and then renovating my long-neglected Tau 40k army. In between those things I also have a Bretonnian army, a bunch of Warhammer terrain (including a Warhammer Fortress), and now a Sisters of Battle army waiting to be painted. I think that will probably keep me busy for a while...

What am I spending my money on? The last thing was finally starting up that Sisters of Battle army I've had my eye on for a while now. A Cannoness, components for a command squad (a Hospitaller, a couple of icon bearers and some heavy flamer sisters), a Battle Sisters squad, an Immolator and an Exorcist are already in my possession, with a second Battle Sister squad (sans meltagunner, that model was out of stock when I ordered :( ) and three Penitent Engines are on the way.

The same thing I've been doing the last 20 years.

Assembling and painting Eldar, Crimson Fists and Dark Elves and playing the odd game at my local store.

I am currently working on a metal oop bloodthirster on a round base (I can still use it easily in Chillhammer)

I also just undercoated my Khorgorath red (got from a mate who got the AOS box set) and "Dragonofex" which is a goofy Carnifex/dragon hybrid conversion which I will use as a Carnifex in 40k and be a part of "Team Alien" in Chillhammer clocking in as a 225 or 250 point pick depending on play testing.

I am still working on a unit of 5 Centigor for my beastmen which are almost complete.

Finally I have just assembled my Reaper Kracken (without ship) which is simply giant! It's so big I can't even fit it on an terrorgheist base! Thankfully I have an old placemat which I will use as its base. I honestly love this model and for the price highly recommend it. I did the boiling water/freeze method to repose some of the tentacles. Might use the Monstrous Arcanum Merwyrm rules for it once it's done... we shall see!

I have just completed an ebay order which is now posted consisting of the following:

- 2 Khorgoraths (1 for a mate)
- 3 retributors with hammers (imo the best looking of the standard Sigmarites). I like how they look like paladins of Sigmar.
- Mantic basilean general on lion. I normally think Mantic models looks like ass but I really liked the big lion so we shall see. In typical Mantic fashion the rider looks like a pleb so ill probably put a big hatted Chaos Dwarf on the lion instead :)... or maybe just run it riderless if that's possible.
-Bushido miniatures Chinese style dragon. My first Bushido miniature. . I'm looking forward to it, the dragon caught my eye
- Knight models Dr Octopus - Im not entirely sure the scale, I think he's a little bigger than 28mm scale (first Knight models model) but I hope this incoming metal model does not disappoint! Dr Octopus is one of my favorite Spiderman villains and I can't wait to get him hopefully assembled and painted to a good standard. When he makes his debut the entire Chillhammer universe will be put on notice! No idea what I'm going to do for his rules but that's a long way off.

Add to that I still need to polish up my Great Unclean One (50mm square base) and paint my Tzeentch Chaos Lord (Known only as "Moonface").

So yeah I have a lot to go on with.. but it's all fun and games :)

I am buying and finishing a lizardmen warhammer army, which is to say square bases.

I am also working on a warmaster and an epic army, both which were bought at the final days of the specialist games.

Going through my drawers and cubbards to check what models I actually have. It's worrying. It seems I can make full chaos mortal and daemon armies, a Dwarf army and I'm pretty sure I can add 2000pts worth of greenskins to my existing force. I don't even want to guess what else I'll dig up. Ah well , all good for 8th edition ( or 4 th,5th,6th,7th) and very handy for KOW/Warthrone.

Also, busy with haqqislam for infinity.

Ssst don't tell my wife.

Err... Still trying to catch up painting but now with more new things on it!

We're playing AoS and talking about getting some games of WFB in soon. AoS lets us have 3-4 games where 8th would give us 1 in the same time frame.

Also planning on picking up the Malifaux starter at the end of the week, figured it was time to test out a new game :p

Playing AoS with my mates. The game has re-invigorated Warhammer in our group.

Buying, building and painting citadel woods times 4, glade guard boxes times two and dryads times two. I already own old metal treemen and so will be able to field the syvanethi wood guardians 'mega formation' (or whatever its called) from the back of the AoS Wood Elves warscrolls download.

Continuing to play warmaster and epic with huge model collections as my long term gaming loves!

We tweaked rules to our liking, and we're now preparing for a campaign in the old world. For us nothing has changed. As if AoS never came out.
I'm assembling two boxes of doomfire warlocks, and trying to figure out how to assemble dark riders from it too.

Just purchased a KoW Abyssal Dwarf army and will be playing with them and my Skaven in the near future.
Already have a large collection of other games but will be looking to add Dreadball and Deadzone from the Mantic range.
Will also be dabbling in Bushido, Malifaux and Inifity as well as probably taking a look at Flames of War.
Still Playing 40K but unlikely to be buying more stuff for my forces.

Playing Star Wars Armarda. Getting a bit excited as wave two is now at the printers so I'm looking forward to the previews of the Imperial Star Destroyer and the MC80 Star Cruiser that will be up on the FFG website. I've placed my pre-order with Element Games and I can't wait for them to arrive (hopefully with some sneek peeks of wave 3). As for fantasy I invested in the new Kings of War rules when it was up on kickstarter so I'm not going to get rid of my High Elf and Undead army. I've also ordered Frostgrave from Amazon so when it arrives I'm going to take that up to the club and see if people want to get involved.

We (well "I" - I can't speak for everyone) don't mind people liking AoS. The "old-school crap" is probably due more due to the "I'm alright jack" tone and just generally shoving their noses in the fact their game is gone.

There must be 30 committed AoS-defenders here, and yet your posts (except this one, which was friendly enough) stand out as trollier than most other supporters.

I've tried not to troll. Joys of being Scottish and blunt as a hammer. Genuinely have no issue with the old skool. I'd be unhappy if my main game was wrecked but purely the background. The game had to change and it has yes it comes across as stupidly simple and honestly at first I was like this is stupid the rules and scrolls were just WTF but when I showed my non gaming misses she was impressed by the simple rules and fact she didn't have to read millions of pages of rules and she changed my mind on it. If the simple rules can get non gamers interested and more people get into the game. Its only a good thing. GW don't do balance, the rules have been whack for years. AoS is a good game when you get past the simple rules and silly fake horses. It can be a strategic tactical game where deployment and movement are key its just some folks don't want to see it. Balance can be worked out easily by communicating with your opponent and talking about the game you are both after. It is a social hobby after all and assuming both players aren't tools it can be a good game. Hopefully over time people will see that and more of the old skool fantasy players help out the new skool

I'm selling my massive O&G army and every single bit of GW stuff I have (ignoring paints). I'm fully commited to give Kings of War a try. Liked 1.0 and 2.0 seems like a very good evolution of a great concept.
It feels like the "whole" German WHF tournament scene is moving on. KoW maybe, Warmachine probably, nothing at all quite certain.

Painting some wildriders for two 8th edition tourneys coming up. Hoping to make it into the US Masters (which will also be 8th edition). I probably wont but at least their is decisive support for a particular system. Watching the community fracture is unnerving.

Preordered the Kings of War 2nd book and am following the Swedish 9th edition closely.

I may play AoS with a friend occasionally, but the 74$ rulebook will be my only purchase.

Er, if you're going to play KoW why sell your miniatures? You'll just have to get more.

What am I doing? Playing a lot of Chain of Command and writing scenarios and lists for it. Painting some Sherman tanks and Bren gun carriers for that, then I've got two platoons of infantry and some buildings to do. Then I've got a heap of Indians to paint for Muskets and Tomahawks. I'm going to a War and Conquest tournament in a couple of months but I'll be borrowing an army for that.
Played a good game of 8th Ed the other day and it's motivated me to finish off my DoW, so I just bought some Mantic ogres for that. Never really liked the GW ogres.

Same as usual. Playing WHFB with a mix of models form different makers and ages. Playing the odd different game as it takes my interest. Also indulging in my obsession with reading different rules for different games that I know I'll never actually play, as well as model ranges in scales I don't really collect. Re-buy my WHFB armies in 15mm because 15mm terrain is sweet... Oh, and a 1/72 Victorian Sci-fi or fantasy Napoleonic army wouldn't cost that much...

Er, if you're going to play KoW why sell your miniatures? You'll just have to get more.

Perhaps doing it in 2mm scale to make dead-proper mass-battle armies? I would...

Frantically buying those 8th edition army books that were missing from my collection of all 6th and 7th edition books and most of 4th, 5th and 8th before they disappear from stores completely. And they do it rather fast now. That way I will be able to play good old Warhammer in the days to come.

Pretty much what I always used to do

Star Trek attack wing, LotR SBG, a bit of warhammer 8th ed (got a game this Tuesday) and progressing with my current 'labour of love', my Horus Heresy Legion (which will soon be large enough to play games with).

I've got some AoS chaos models because I think they look great, they will get painted eventually, and if GW manages to rescue the game with some kind of balance mechanic I will give the game a go.

However much I like painting the models and showing them off, life is too short and the hobby too varied to start playing games that I don't find fun/enjoyable.

Starting a Skaven force for AoS.

AoS is unbound 40k, but done correctly. There a few teething problems, but so was the start of any new system. Infinity was dreadful until recently, PP stuff was dreadful. AoS, thankfully, isn't dreadful.

I know its the norm to hate GW, but it seems many people are joining the zeitgeist, without actually trying the game.

From lowest to highest priority, it's 40K and WMH:
-Finish Assembling my Dark Angels army
-Buy more, Assemble more, and Paint my Cygnar army
-Buy more for my Dark Angels Army

Unless GW releases a points system for it, I'm ignoring AoS. It's a decent game, but no one in my area is keen on playing it.

So what are you all doing differently?

I am looking forward to build multiple small armies instead of few large armies. Now that army building has no restrictions, I can build small armies using only models I like and ignoring those that I don't like. Previously this has been hard because many poor models happened to be core units that you needed certain amount of. I haven't played a game in 5 years but I still want my armies to be "playable". I enjoy building armies, but I'd rather fill my gaming needs with board games.

What are you painting?

Nothing at the moment. Once I get used to my new job I'll continue my pre-AoS projects including 5th edition Lizardmen army, Empire and Adeptus Mechanicus to name but a few. I am also looking forward to paint a lot of scenery.

I will also build (and hopefully start painting) a number of smaller AoS projects. I won't re-base any models. My fantasy armies will keep their square bases but any new projects will have round bases.

What are you spending your hard earned money on?

Same as before - pretty models. Now that building a small army is a viable option, I have already bought Savage Orcs, Bretonnians and Ogre Kingdoms - models that I like, but which I previously had no desire to build a large army of.

Just bought a huge 6mm Greek army from Baccus, gonna paint those up and use them for Commands & Colors Ancients, and perhaps for Hail Caesar as well. Planning for some micro scale terrain for that as well.

Expanding my medieval army with some Fireforge stuff, using it mainly for Lion Rampant and Hail Caesar.

Also expanding my pulp figures collection, playing a hilarious Pulp Alley campaign and building terrain for that.

Getting ready for a Great Northern War campaign for Black Powder that is due to start in August.

Glancing at Sword & Spear, since it looks like a really good system for mass ancients/medieval battles.

Also playing lots of boardgames currently; Twilight Struggle, Wars of the Roses, A few Acres of Snow...

Good times overall. The AoS fiasco killed what remained of my interest for WHFB. I do mourn the Old World since it was an early love for me, but I haven't played or bought any GW products in quite some time, so the real mourning process is kind of over already.

We keep playing exactly like before.

Had an 8th edition tournament last week. Have another one coming end of August on which we will probably playtest a few of the 9th age rules.

Other than that, FoW, FoG (ancients, medieval and napoleonic) and Infinity for the most part. I'm painting a few Bolt Action Italians to match my FoW Bersaglieri, but very few people play it around here.

Hail Caesar book is also on my bedside table. Still mostly skimming through the book to get the bigger picture before going in for a detailed read.

I'm putting together a Dwarven warband for Frostgrave (All GW, as I bought it ages ago), and starting a small German force for Bolt Action, and getting some 10mm fantasy for HC/KoW/Oldhammer, finishing off my ECW Lancastrians, trying to find my 15mm Spartans, and then whatever takes my fancy next.

I'm working on the same thing I was before - my 40k Orks.

Though as part of this, I ended up nabbing a half-price box of Black Orcs off ebay in order to do some conversions with a couple of bits. I'm considering putting the rest of the models on round bases and using them whenever I finally get around to trying AoS. I also have some Skaven and a couple of skeletons, but I've been around long enough to know that my hobby passion always skews towards greenskins.

I was about three quarters through finishing my orc and goblin army, but I'm waiting to see how all of this shakes out before I finish it or buy more. I bought and painted a blood bowl goblin team I got off ebay and I'm finishing some stuff for my 40k ork army. After that, I'll see how the situation looks and decide whether to convert my O&G army to Kings of War, some other mass battle ruleset, Age of Sigmar, or leave it like it is and finish it for 8th edition if an accepted community ruleset gets popular (like hopefully the ETC/Swedish Comp system might do).

I'm in a bit of a hobby rut, been a while since I had a fun game of anything and having trouble getting on with the games I am playing.
Feeling its a bit pointless painting at the moment, and what I am painting is not getting any technically better and I feel like I have hit the peak of my skills with it.

Its probably just due to uncertainties in the rest of my life that is destabilizing my mood with hobby things though and I expect in a few months I'll feel much better about it all :)

I actually really like the new stormcast models but I'm very poor at the moment so rebasing my dark elfs or starting up a space ma- stormcast eternals collection is definitely going to have to wait. I haven't been hobbying for almost a year but the new 'throw everything out the window' thing has piqued my interest.

bought the AoS starter, started converting them to my chaos marine army, traded my leftover sigmarines. Played a couple rounds of AoS, determined it was unsuitable at this moment, realized I had other projects I needed to finish, dropped everything to finish up an old 40k army project. With AoS being the release focus, will not be distracted by new releases and maybe could actually finish current project put on hold years ago.

Ironically, AoS has rekindled my interest in Warhammer... 6th Edition. So I'm currently organising and building armies for that collection. So far I am nearly at 4,000 points of Empire and High Elves, well over 6,000 points of Vampire Counts, and on the way to 4,000 points of Skaven. Then I'll be cracking on with the rest - Bretonnians, Dwarfs, Orcs and Goblins, Tomb Kings, etc etc.

Playing Warmachine and Hordes, both down the club and picking up new players for our own little local regular games nights. No body in the club is interested in AoS

Iv also been getting into Malifaux as a side project as the miniatures fit nicely into our Steampunk Pathfinder campaign we are about to start in about a month.

Apart form that, watching in amusement at peoples rage and personally wondering if GW is slowly imploding.

All my stuff arrived today the Zombicide stuff looks great and the X Wing models look really nice. So much stuff in the flames of war starter which will be interesting paint as I have never painted such a small scale before.

Also looking at Star Wars Armada and Imperial Assault are they any good?

I am preparing to sell most of my Games Workshop minis, including 40k because it seems something similarly awful is going to happen to that.

And I am loving Guild Ball and Malifaux. Wish I'd quit GW sooner, but it took AoS to finally break the habit.

My FLGS (which was 12 minutes away) has decided to stop selling GW products altogether and did away with all their Warhammer terrain, so I'm building a home game table and collecting Warhammer Fantasy terrain to play at home, as the next nearest stores to play at are 40 and 50 minutes away on toll roads. I've also recently ordered some nice magnetic movement trays off eBay, so I'm looking forward to their arrival. Beyond that, I'm satisfied with the place my Empire army is at. I might get 10 more Archers, 10 more Greatswords, and a couple characters (Kurt Helborg, Ludwig Schwartzhelm, Markus Wulfhart), but I'm good otherwise, so I'll just stick to playing 8th edition at home using the models I already have. I'd intended to collect Undead and Bretonnia with End Times, but with Age of Sigmar, those plans have been permanently shelved (along with my plans of collecting more 40k armies, as I already sold my Adeptus Mechanicus and Necrons on eBay).

Beyond that, I've heard that X-Wing and Armada are fun, and I've already bought the starters for each. Now that I'm saving a lot of money thanks to GW, now seems like a great time to try other games which are being played at my FLGS.

AoS has not sold one box at my LGS and the owner is furious. He will not be getting any models going forward unless specifically asked by a customer. The gaming group has now gone to either 40k full time (and all expect the rules there to be "Sigmar'd" as we are calling it) or switched to Warmahordes. I can't even get an 8th or earlier game going because of how utterly turned off GW has made the players.

So yeah, thanks GW. Way to ruin gaming for me.

They've got Imperial Assault already. I suspect they'll branch off of that... in fact the villain and ally packs that are in development are adding at least one new map as well- Hired Guns is bringing Nar Shadda missions, and a map, there is a stormtrooper pack with more for skirmish games, even a bantha.

Like the X-wing packs, you're buying new cards and options as much (or more) than a mini or three.

No idea if it is any good, but it is out there already.

Myself and my gaming group are sticking with 8th edition. But we did make a few house rules for 8th edition. I won't get into them here as that is better suited for the Development Forum. I'm not going to get into the whole Age of Sigmar discussion. That horse has been beaten dead on this site. Its 8th for our group (Northern British Columbia, Canada) going forward.

It is a fun game. I have at least one of every ship out so far. It takes 5-10 minutes to set up, maybe 45 minutes to 1 hour to play depending on the agreed point value (yes, the game has points and the normal is 100 points per side) and you will have fun playing it.

I've taken a rather odd departure myself, I've gone very heavy in on Dystopian Wars, and have begun the ramp-up for Wild West Exodus. DW has been really fun (and I highly recommend it, speaking of games with free rules online), and the massive shift in scale and tactics has been very invigorating for our little group. As for AOS itself, I'm not really in a hurry to play the game itself, but the terrain pieces are amazing (I'm a sucker for terrain, though) and I'll probably be on the hunt for some of those. They have also managed to keep a glimmer of hope alive for me as far as the quality of the sculpts themselves goes. Unfortunately, GW has gradually priced themselves out of my market (I could afford it by the numbers, but I don't feel I get enough for my money, if that makes sense), so it's really of little consequence anyway. At this point I'll be keeping an eye open for interesting single miniatures (leaders and characters and such) that might fit a mordheim warband, but that's pretty much it.

Oh, how I wish the X-wing models weren't pre-painted! I am a huge star wars fan and would love to have all of these, but I'm also a painter and want to have my way with them *leer*. Imperial Assault does call to me, though...I can hear it now...*(buy....us....)*

Wondering where I go from here really. My local shop has seen some interest in AoS, the issue is we haven't agreed on a shop wide balance system yet, so we've tried total wounds and a fixed total Warscrolls and they aren't ideal.

Other than that, i'm prepping my Guild Ball team slowly whilst sort of AoS'ing up my Skaven. The things that are useable in 8th are going on square bases, the less suitable stuff (Rat Ogres, Throt the Unclean, Jezzails, Clanrats with Spears etc) are going on round bases.

Preparing to paint a load of Williy Miniatures Blood Bowl teams, and some Knight Models Batman TMG crews, and Soda Pop Super Dungeon Explore stuff.

So a nice varied list of stuff (not including my Infinty starter, X-Wing, Malifaux & D&D Attack wing stuff), and as you'll notice not a single GW thing in sight. As if I didn't have enough lead in the pile I've just bought a copy of Ronin and have been shopping Perry and The Assault Group.

If GW want to address cost of entry they should look at games like this for an example of how to do it right. About 6 for a digital copy of the rules, and I reckon I can get three full warbands for about 70 of miniatures. Throw in another 50 or so on some Japanese buildings and I'm sorted.

Looking into KoW for future fantasy battling. Needless to say, my vast undead horde will keep their square bases. The KoW system of unitbasing instead of individual models game-wise does provide a golden opportunity to model that skeleton unit sporting a shieldwall and bristling with spears, so that'll probably be my next fantasy project.

GW will still get some of my money through Forgeworld though. I'm but a man.:cries:

We have been back to D&D lately for our weekly gaming night, after the better part of a year playing a couple of collaborative Mordheim campaigns. My copy of Frostgrave arrived today, and it looks quite promising.

In terms of miniatures, I have been binging on the large number of multi-part plastic medieval kits that have been released the last few years, which I had never gotten around to buying: Fireforge, Perry Miniatures, and Gripping Beast. And, as of today, the lovely Frostgrave plastics. I haven't actually painted any, mind you... but I am having fun assembling them (esp. love mixing bits from different sets).

I did pick up the initial two scenery kits for Age of Sigmar, which will probably be painted in a snowy scheme as that will match both Frostgrave and our D&D campaign.

It would be interesting to see, if people are leaving/not playing AoS, what systems or games they are taking up instead. I see a lot of people going for the smaller, skirmish games like xwing, Guild Ball and Malifaux a well as finding other different large scale (Warmahordes) and mas scale (KoW) games to play. It would be interesting to see if the trend if for larger or smaller scale.

Uh...playing Warhammer. I bought one of the Island of Blood boxes a few months back and am building up my new High Elf and Skaven armies. Funnily enough GW was right about one thing, AoS is going to help the sales of their fantasy ip. I am going to exclusively buy models for my Fantasy armies, thus costing them 40k sales, so that I can have an extensive force for all my armies before the models are gone forever, and there is nothing but AoS nonsense left.

Besides wrapping up my Dark Mechanicus themed admech for 40k I'm finally putting paint to brush on my AoS skaven army and getting ready to play the battleplans. AoS is doing good in my group, we're playing 50/50 between AoS and 40k now. We're originally 40k players and barely anyone used to play fantasy. FW is also finally coming to the legions I'm interested in so we'll see how that goes.

So all in all pretty much like always for me. Always got 2-3 projects in the works.

I really enjoy everything about it at the moment. Lets see if my motivation keeps up for a longer period but i feel like this game is doing alot things right.

I will still continue to play an occasional game of 40k and Fantasy/Aos but overall im pretty happy that they "****ed up" AoS so hard (at least for me) and manouvered 40k in a state I really dont enjoy, because otherwise I would have never got into Warmahordes.
