Hi, I just bought the bac box as the models are brilliant and it seems like a great way to get into 30k. Unfortunately I can't decide on a legion. Was tempted by blood angels (what I play in 40k) but they don't have any special units or characters right now. I've had a look at some of the other legions and settled on a few potentials. The two in the lead right now are alpha legion (awesome fluff, amazing models, interesting sounding rules) and raven guard (same fluff and model wise but I have no clue really about their rules). Runners up are then salamanders and imperial fists but I'm not sure on their rules either. Any info on how these armies play would be great. And any tips on what to build out of the bac box would be great too. Right now I'm thinking 20 tacticals and 10 vets? Then maybe getting a second box next month to make some specialist/unique units. Cheers!

Seems a lot of us are having this same issue....

Assuming you're going to paint them, I'd go for the legion that you thinks has the best paint scheme that is compatible with your skills and taste.
Failing that just go with Death Guard because everyone knows they are the best :)

Pfft Death Guard aren't the best. For that you want the 1st Legion, who are 1st for a reason ;)

OP: Pick a Legion you like the fluff for and who's colour scheme you don't hate, that's the best suggestion really. As for how those Legions you listed play...

Raven Guard: everything either has infiltrate or Furious charge (Terminators, bikes, assault marines for the latter). The legion plays like a scalpel, and it's dedicated Rite of War (think themed force organisation) is about dropping onto your opponents HQ and murdering them. Named characters are meh compared to some Legions... though you do get a guy that makes your Drop pods ridiculously accurate and anyone stepping out of them gets counter-attack.

Salamanders: Do you want a reason to burn everything and have artificer quality gear on every Sgt. or higher? Look no further. Pretty much immune to Fear (ATSKNF does not exist for the Legions so this buff is huge). However if they ever flee you're likely to get swept up in the ensuing advance.

Imperial Fists. Bolters. Bolters everywhere. You know that 40k character that has the bolter drill thing? That's what this Legion exemplifies. They also have some very powerful special characters and units and they have access to some of the best Legion-only wargear available, not to mention being one of the few legions with Eternal Warriors. Oh and Stubborn in cover, so there's that too.

If you need to check out more on the legiosn there's this little site called 1d4chan you should google ;)

Wait out for blood angels if that was your first choice.. Blood Angels have always been popular so will likely get some good stuff, Sanguinas will be a combat God and I'm imagining raldoran having an awesome model and rules.

Pick the Legion that by being Uber paranoid, they created their own Bootstrap Paradox?

There is a reason DG was picked by Nurgle. They were resilient BEFORE the Destroyer Plague. Almost unkillable afterward.

That must be one of those newer fictions that I've not read yet, but hey if you're gonna screw with something you might as well make it interesting.

As for the DG's resilience... yeah you got me there, but Nurgle picking them because they're resilient just strikes me as giving too much though to a quasi-dimensional being that just wants to sneeze over everyone. I mean heck, every Space Marine is resilient and the Salamanders more-so after all.

Thanks for the 1d4chan advice, some interesting reading there. Both raven guard and alpha legion seem to suit my kind of play style. Talk of death company made me take a look though and they seem pretty interesting too. While I would like to do blood angels, the lack of rules are kind of pushing me to try a different legion to begin with and maybe come back to them when their rules come out. Any idea how soon ba rules are likely to be, or how often forge world release new rules?

Blood angels should be getting their Legiones Astartes rules and rites of war in book 6, due out in February, however they are apparently not getting any characters or unique unit profiles yet. It might be worth noting that whatever unique units BA get for HH the death company will probably not be among them, I'm pretty sure the black rage wasn't a thing until after sanguinius was killed.

Also, don't forget how long it takes to paint up the core of a HH army. My 30k era Blood Angels probably won't be fully painted before their specialist units start showing up. Big blocks of 20 space marines take a long time to paint. I bet Amit and friends will make an appearance.

If you want to do Blood Angels then I would just try and hang on a bit longer they shouldn't be long. Alternately, do you really want two BA armies? Maybe pick something different, Alpha Legion seem to have popular and unique rules.

It seems loyalist legions haven't seen as much love as the traitors in terms of model releases. Blood Angels are hands down my favourite chapter/legion but Smooth Boy may be right, maybe trying something different would be good. If I go Alpha Legion I need the two red books or Extermination, but which books would I need to run Blood Angels? Just the Crusade book?
Also thinking of the bac contents I'm thinking of starting with 2x 10 tactical squads and 1 x 10 vet squad. Then adding a second box next month to bump up the tacticals to 20 marines and using the final 10 marines for support squads. Good way to go or should I go for pride of the legion and just make vet squads to go along side the termies?

I think that's mostly because of where we are in the story rather than any inherent bias on the part of the designers, the Isstvan incident was mainly a traitor show with a few loyalist legions showing up only to get massacred. Space wolves and Thousand sons are long overdue and will hopefully make their appearance soon.

Yeah i assumed as much after reading what all the various big books cover. Do you know what the next book will focus on?

Book 6 is supposed to be a 'Shattered Legions' book. Basically it's a placeholder because they don't have the models ready for Prospero (now pushed to Book 7 if everything stays on track) and so they can get through the backlog of units that need doing.
Contents that we're aware of:
Legion traits & Rite of War (but NOT unique units/characters/Primarchs) for the Dark Angels, Blood Angels and White Scars. This means that after this book the only Legions without traits will e Space Wolves and Thousand Sons.. which are due in Book 7 anyway. (Book 8 we 'think' is going to be a campaign supplement that focuses on what the 2 Angels' Legions were doing when this all kicked off).
New Rites of War for ALL the Legions (or at least all of the current ones, so that every Legion has 2 themed Rites).
Rebalancing of some of the older Legion unique units (Sons of Horus/Luna Wolves take note ;) )
And general stuff on the Shattered Legions (both Loyalist and Traitor). Oh and some big tanks.

^^ That's what we're aware of, however take with salt since we don't have the book in our hands until the next FW open day in February.

Get in line.

I feel like I've been waiting for The Cyclops and a proper Ahriman for more years than I can recount. Would be great to see The Wolf in resiny flesh too.

For an event that takes place at the outset of the heresy, they sure do love putting it off

Awesome cheers for the info. So if I go for Blood Angels, I should pick up the crusade book and then the Shattered Legions book in February. Any clue how long it will be until book 7 comes out? Is it like one a year?

Book 6 is expected in February 2016, book 5 was released in May 15. It was talked about that the idea was 2 books a year, but that hasn't been happening recently, I'd imagine that if we get book 6 in February we will probably have book 7 by the end of 2016 at the latest, but don't quote me on that.

What Spiney said, they planned on 2 books a year but this year we've only had the one. Considering that FW is now part of Specialist Games (or SG is part of FW, take your pick) and that the first major release that team has done being Betrayal at Calth it makes sense if a book was pushed back because design time had to be devoted to BaC. Ideally though Book 7 should be the end of next year, Book 8 sometime in 2017 (and finally the 'Angel' Legions will get some love.... yeah I know book 6 and all but I can grumble that at least we know what every other Legion was up to at the start of the Heresy).
