View Full Version : praetorian conscript models?

Hi all

I'm really struggling to find suitable conscript models for my praetorian army that would fit with the style of the rest of the army. Historically I thought about zulu miniatures for about three seconds but abandoned that plan for being horribly racist...
Does anyone know of good alternative models?

Tried victorian miniatures?

You could use the penal ones or even the van diemen ones as part of a greater empire force?

I don't know if this helps you.

I have a Praetorian army. I'd decided to not do a unit of conscripts for the same reason you mentioned, but I recently came into 25 of the old Rogue Trader Penal Legion model, with the bomb collar, so I will use them. I'm going to paint their skin extra pale.

As the Aussies say... good call.

I would go on Victoria Miniatures and you can buy penal legs, heads and arms to convert Praetorians that look like they've been demoted or court marshalled.

Do you want them to look like the conscripts in Zulu? IIRC they were wearing green uniforms with no helmet. Maybe you could use something like Catachan troops, but without the Rambo heads? Or Cadians without helmets?

You could also use the fantasy empire free company models and convert them to carry lasguns for an industrial working class style.

Maybe go with mordians. I've often thought about using them with my praetorians.

They don't really look like conscripts though.

Although maybe if gave them a very dull drab olive uniform and tan boots it could work.

I could have sworn in the movie there were some troops with hats like that.

If you are talking about the movie ZULU with Michael Caine, all the British soldiers wore Pith helms. http://victoriaminiatures.highwire.com/product/pith-helmet-heads-2 http://maxmini.eu/conversion-bits/head-swaps/pith-heads-bits http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=47_48&products_id=115

If you want to keep with the Anglo-Zulu war kind of theme (and avoid potential for unintended racism), you could draw some visual cues from the uniforms worn by the European or cavalry elements of the Natal Native Contingent. You might also want to look at some the uniforms of the Boer War or Sudan as well - it could be as simple as having the 'regulars' in red jackets, while the conscripts wear khaki.

I would have thought that Mordians would be the obvious candidates to be used as Praetorian conscripts.

Mordian uniforms are too decorated for conscripts. Why not use Praetorian models for the conscripts as well as the normal guardsmen, but make sure that all of the non-conscripts have big manly moustaches?
