Welcome to 2016

...well...a month early...but its my birthday tomorrow and I have a new load of minis incoming so thought I might as well kick things off early. Pics will follow of whats going to be coming up, as well as some sort of plan(ish) but for now here's a few minis I painted up in 2015 just to whet your appetites...

Da Plan
So yeah...I have been struggling with motivation for the hobby the last year so I thought I'd start a new plog and set myself a some targets.

Sci Fi Settlement - I've a load of mdf buildings from Zen Terrain (http://www.zenterrain.com) plus a load of Mantic's battlefield accessories (http://www.manticgames.com/mantic-shop/mantic-scenery-and-terrain/individual-kits/product/battlezones-sci-fi-urban-accessories.html) and...some...other stuff...

Woods & Lost Temple - A couple of GWs characterful Woods and an Arcane Ruins set

Betrayal at Calth - I'm painting these guys up as my own chapter The Wolves of Lucan...yep...definitely not Space Wolves...:shifty:

Dire Avenger Squad - My marines need someone to shoot at! :D These might get built up to a small 500pt force...maybe...

RelicBlade - A cool looking new game...Heroes vs. Pig Men (http://relicblade.com)...whats not to like!

Finally and completely un-hobby related, I really need to make a new wooden sword for my martial arts practice and finish a bronze age sword I started a few years ago. If anyone is interested I might pop the odd photo or two up for your purusal.

So...5 days since my birthday and my little windfall of hobby goodness, I guess it must be update time :) Behold my Zen village!

The Zen terrain is great; I got a barracks, a military outpost (I left the rails off the top level) and a set of 3 hab buildings that can be stacked in 2s or 3s (you could stack more if you wanted), see the middle building in the top pic.

I've already undercoated the habs and am going to start painting those tonight.

Can't wait to see some paint on those buildings. I'm curious to see how the laser-cut boards paint up.

And that Viking is my kind of woman. ;)

Two of the posters are not films but from a game called Total Extinction that has floundered in the KS. I was one of the lucky ones to have received my minis.

I'm happy with how these have turned out. I've been trying for a while to build a half decent settlement and it always ends up looking naff but these buildings are cool. The kits are good and fairly easy to put together. The only little niggle is the steps for the 3 habs don't take a base larger than 25mm (apart from the bottom step) but thats a small thing really. I'd definitely recommend Zen Terrain (http://www.zenterrain.com). Oh yeah, its a bit of a squeeze to stack the 3 ha buildings now they've been painted but I'm not bothered about that as I never wanted to anyway.

I made up the posters a while ago and have an A4 sheet. I did film at Uni so thought I'd go with that as a theme for my settlement.

Another batch of fungi ready for paint (will be a few weeks for that) and a shiny new Engu shipbuilder, just finished his training...

I'm just going to finish building & painting the terrain Mrs Egg got me for my birthday then the ship builder is going to see some paint :)

Cheers :) I should be starting the ship builder tomorrow night then maybe the fungi after, unless if my new tube of poly cement turns up.

In the mean time I have just finished a bit of scatter terrain for my Sci-Fi settlement...

These bits are all from Mantic, an Battlefield accessory sprue (http://www.manticgames.com/mantic-shop/mantic-scenery-and-terrain/individual-kits/product/battlezones-sci-fi-urban-accessories.html). Nice an easy to put together they should help to break up lines of fire. I fancy adding a vehicle at some point but not really found one that stands out for me yet.

I've finished my Arcane Ruins set to make up a Lost Temple...
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w418/Lost-Egg/Terrain/Lost%20Temple%20WIP_zps02a2pzkd.jpg (http://s1074.photobucket.com/user/Lost-Egg/media/Terrain/Lost%20Temple%20WIP_zps02a2pzkd.jpg.html)

This didn't take as long as I thought it might to put it together. I was going to build three arches for the temple but it would have made moving minis around inside it a bit of a pain so I left one ruined. The mini running around inside is a Questing Knight (http://relicblade.com/shop/questing-knight) from Relicblade (http://relicblade.com), a cool looking skirmish game that coming to KS next month.

I'm undercoating this lot to start painting tonight but in the mean time, once Ive got my daughter to sleep, I will build up the first two Pig Men for my Knight to lock blades with then I can crack out the Quick Start guide and get rolling.

I've decided to set myself a little challenge...by the end of March I want to finish my Lost Temple, 2 Citadel Woods, 4 Shipping Containers (http://www.zenterrain.com/en_US/p/Shipping-Container/102) and a (to be converted) space ship...this will mean all the terrain I have planned will be done (well, except for a Engu settlement but that can wait for now). Hopefully I will get the first 3 minis of my Relicblade starter set finished too. Then I can start on my marines...

The Lost Temple has paint, unlike the knight wandering through it :D
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w418/Lost-Egg/Terrain/Lost%20Temple%201_zps1k0iju9u.jpg (http://s1074.photobucket.com/user/Lost-Egg/media/Terrain/Lost%20Temple%201_zps1k0iju9u.jpg.html)

I forgot to check the height of this before attaching the obelisk...it doesn't fit in my terrain boxes, bugger. I was a little tempted to saw it down or something but sod it, I'll leave it as is. I tried to make it look a little overgrown and flocked out the massive skull on the floor. I had intended to slap some of my Calth transfers on it but for the life of me I can't find them; I was thinking of the Word Bearer text transfers. Oh well, would probably have looked a bit naff anyway.

I'll start on that knight 2night :)

That is extremely pretty!!! Love the mossy effect.

unwanted
21-02-2016, 13:45
Afraid the moss looks too grassy for my liking, old-skool flock might've looked more the part, but that's only a minor detractor from a very nice set of ruins :D

Lost Egg
21-02-2016, 20:23
Thanks guys. Yeah your probably right unwanted but didn't have any to hand.

I am both pleased and a little disappointed with the ruins set, in terms of its design; part of me would be happier if I had just made my own as it does feel a little cramped. I've been building up a couple of Citadel woods sets and they are worse. While very characterful the fitting of the parts is awful and gap filling is a real pain with the branches everywhere...in the end I just did minimal filling and will choose a dark brown to hide it. It's a shame as I was tempted to get maybe 2 or 3 more sets but now I will probably forget it. Still they are built up and I will hopefully start painting them tomorrow.

...in the mean time I finished my Questing Knight for Relicblade.
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w418/Lost-Egg/Relicblade/Knight_zpsmjdquhp8.jpg (http://s1074.photobucket.com/user/Lost-Egg/media/Relicblade/Knight_zpsmjdquhp8.jpg.html)

The pics are a little bleached but OK. I went with a fairly natural colour palette as this guy wanders about ruined cities searching for relics and hacking down pig men. Speaking of which, I've got the first two pig men made up and will hopefully splash some paint on them after the woods.

Before I sign off I'd just like to say that Relicblade (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1000723637/relicblade-adventure-battle-game/description) is currently at Kickstarter; the game looks fun (have read the rules but not actually played yet), the sculpts are great so check it out!

That's a great selection of mini posters too. There are a lot of good ones, but the 12 monkey stencil is one of my favorites.

No idea why but these feel like they have taken aaagggeeesss to finish. The mini for scale is a Relicblade Questing Knight (check out the KS campaign (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1000723637/relicblade-adventure-battle-game/description) here, its worth jumping in on!).

I know what you mean, I've tried to stick to a simple colour scheme across the board for terrain. I wasn't aiming to do anything fancy just a solid job so it kinda just vanishes, if you know what I mean.

Nice job on that Questing Knight! I've got my Relicblade starter built, just need to paint them up (sadly won't happen too soon, as I've got other painting projects that I need to finish for a con at the end of May). They are definitely some cool minis, looking forward to your pig men!

I had intended to take a pic before painting but forgot, doh! These are from Zen Terrain and went together with little problem. To my mind the card body is a little too loose when nestled into the MDF end and supports but they look good.

I have also dug out a rather battered Gorkamorka Buggy-Truck-Thingy I got from eBay a while ago...
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w418/Lost-Egg/Terrain/Truck%201_zpsyz0mgn6t.jpg (http://s1074.photobucket.com/user/Lost-Egg/media/Terrain/Truck%201_zpsyz0mgn6t.jpg.html)

I've carved off the drivers hands from the stick and added some cargo and a boot rail to stop them falling out but really this is another bit of terrain for my little sci-fi settlement. It's going to get a dirty paint job then I can start on the final bit of sci-fi terrain...just a little(ish) something...

Lost Egg

A fast & speedy paint job that should see it blend in well with the rest of the settlement; I will have to dig it all out and pop it on my board at some point but first I need to finish this bad boy!
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w418/Lost-Egg/Terrain/Ship%20WIP%201_zpste1me2e8.jpg (http://s1074.photobucket.com/user/Lost-Egg/media/Terrain/Ship%20WIP%201_zpste1me2e8.jpg.html)

Yep, it's Thunderbird 2 :D I've no plans on using this as anything other than terrain. I've had the toy for aaagggeeesss but have never gotten around to sorting it out and painting it up. It turned out to be surprisingly easy to get ready for painting; I had to unscrew it all to remove the legs, buttons and other bits I didn't want, then glued it together before finally stuffing a load of Milliput into it to fill gaps and poked in some Tau Devilfish landing gear as well as some baby food satchet tops (to give the plain engines a little more interest). All in all, I'm happy with it and will be undercoating it tonight then I can start painting tomorrow...not quite sure on colours yet though.

I was originally planning on adding a coloured stripe down the side and transfers but nothing quite clicked for me so in the end I went with a basic colour scheme, at least as terrain, it won't distract from the forces fighting around it. I will take some pics with the rest of the terrain at some point but first I need to paint up my marines...

For Link, I wonder if some of the old GW wood elves might be a good start, although I bet you'll have to greenstuff the hat, at the very least.

I just looked up relic blade, they do some nice minis. Though there are not that many at the moment, I hope they increase their range.

Yeah, its a small range but plans are afoot to expand it; the recent KS got an extra hero (Thief) and an extra villain or two (Dark Watcher & Dark Wanderer) plus the box and a mini for the Relic. I expect that this range is gunna grow and grow, hopefully once the boxed game is up for sale it will attract a UK / European distributor.

I can see that Link stand-in working though I'm not a massive fan of the Chibi style.

There used to be a guy on shapeways that sold prints of game renders from various games, and he had a Link up there, but now I can't find the model :/ You might still consider scrolling through there, though

Cheers Stormbringer! :D

In other news two more Piggies have arrived ready for battle...

The chap on the left is a converted Axe Pig, originally the axe was being held by two hands and went with the body of the Soldier Pig (the guy with the halberd), the other chap is a Berserker...because everyone loves a nutter :D

Hmm...I think the Knight might be a little outnumbered!

Another update, behold the Cleric and her spirit hammer...

I decided to go with yellow for the skin to make her a bit different. Only one hero, Wood Elf & Bear, to go now...till the KS stuff arrives anyway :D

I've seen this stuff on GMG looks like a fun game. I love the pig men and you made a good job of them with an unusual colour. Great work.

Love your color scheme for the cleric! the light skin and dark cloak is a cool alternative to the studio version's grey-green with red cloak. Nice weathering on the shield, too!

@Ace Rimmer - Merci! :)

@Stormbringer - Cheers mate! :D

Here's the start of a new slow burner project (aren't they all)...

Sylvaneth! Here we have my first unit of dryads, pretty stock stuff really though I obviously switched the bases for what I'd call the Warmachine style. I also chopped down the branch sticking out of their backs as, to me, they look a bit daft. My aim, kinda, is to slowly build this into a force that one day, maybe I will actually play with. I am loosely aiming to build up and paint a single unit or hero per month but we will see if that actually pans out :D
