Post what army you are creating a list for, which scenario you will play and assume you do NOT know what foe you will battle.
You have 1000 points (+/- 5 points) to choose 2 Troops units, 1 Heavy Support unit and EITHER 1 Elite Unit OR 1 Fast Attack unit.
No need to list point values, just units and upgrades you want/need.

I am curious about everone's 'must haves' and how much overlap there is.

Still need alternate lists for Orks, Any Necrons, any Dark Eldar, any Tau, any Tyranid, any Skitarii, any adeptus mechanicus, any dark angels/grey knights/space wolves, any inquisition.

I didn't ask for HQ choices as they didn't interest me. just the must haves for Troops & Heavy support, with the choice of 1 Elite OR 1 Fast (but not both).

Chaos Space Marines, any Scenario

A big unit of cultists, another big unit of cultists, a unit of chaos spawn, and . . . nothing at the moment from HS.
This is the fluffy core of my army, so no matter the game they will always make an appearance.

Chaos Space Marines.

Two large units of cultists, one unit of Chosen, some count as Ogrin models used as Chaos Spawn. This tends to be my core, same as Denny. They represent my chaos rebellion (with some outside help) rather well.

Now all I need to do is find my Deacon some transport.

Imperial Guard

Two Infantry Platoon as my two troop selections, some Storm Troopers in a Chimera as Elites and a Leman Russ as a heavy support option.

Perhaps not the most effective, but again, it fits my armies theme.

Numbers may not be exactly 1000, but these form the core of pretty much every list I run

Tzeentch Chaos Marines:
2 Squads of Thousand Sons w/ Sorcerer and 8 Rubrics
1 Helbrute w/ Missile Launcher and Plasma Cannon
(No H. Support at all)

Word Bearers Chaos Marines:
Squad of Chaos Marines w/Power Spear and 2 Flamers
Big squad of Autogun cultists
Forgefiend w/Hades Autocannons
Helbrute w/ 2 Power Fists, Heavy Flamer and Combi-Bolter

Imperial Guard:
2 squads of Veterans in Chimeras, one with Meltas and one with Flamers
Squadron of 2 Basalisks OR Squadron of Leman Russ Exterminators
Squad of Deep Striking Tempestus Scions w/Plasma Guns

Space Marines:
2 Tactical Squads, one with Flamer/Missile Launcher and one with Melta/Multimelta/Combi-Melta and Power Fist
Devastator Squad w/four Heavy Bolters
Sternguard Squad with Heavy Flamer and 2 Combi-meltas in Drop Pod

Blood Angels any scenario

2 10 man tac squads hand flamer, melta bombs, flamer heavy flamer rhino
10 death company JP thunder hammer infernus pistol.
I also always run 2 5 man dev squads with missile launchers but as I'm only aloud 1 choice it will have to be a Storm Raven with assault cannon multi melta I'm still about 95pts off a 1000 tho.

Space Marines (Ultramarines) any Scenario

Two Tactical Squads, likely with Grav Cannons, Grav Guns and Combi-Gravs in Rhinos

Devastator Squad w/ Lascannons

Command Squad w/ Meltas in a Drop Pod (I think?) I might rather have a third Tac squad though.

Which gets me to somewhere between 800-900 points. Modify to squeeze in an HQ and then start flexing the list to the meta after a battle or two.

Adepta Sororitas, Any scenario

Two Basic Sisters Squads of 9 Sisters & 1 Sister Superior, flamer + Hvy flamer upgrades. Rhino for each squad.
One Exorcist Tank with Laud Hailer & extra armor
One Dominion squad with Melta guns and a combi-flamer in a Rhino.

Sadly this is just over 750 points.

No heavy support, the entire army is fast- the bloodletters are the only slow element but they at least get to deepstrike if they want

1x 2 Nightspinner both with Holofields.

Troops. 2x guardian defenders, both with scatter lasers and warlocks.
Heavey support. Falcon squadron- 3 falcons all with bright lances and shuriken cannons. Holo fields.
Fast attack. Warp spiders- 5 with one upgraded to exarch. Exarch has twin linked death spinners.

2 tactical squads in rhinos. 1 flamer, 1 meltagun, 2 missile launchers, 2 combi weapons. 10 models each.
Devastator squad 4 lascannons. 10 models.
Ravenwing attack squadron. 6 bikes, 2 meltaguns, lightning claw. attack bike multi Melta. Land speeder heavy bolter, typhoon missile launcher.

This is only 940. I can't get to 1000 in the limitations presented without putting on silly upgrades.

Dark Eldar

2 x (10 Warriors, 1 Splinter Cannon, 1 Raider with Dark Lance and Splinter Racks)
1 x (Reaver Jetbikes with as many Cluster Caltrops as they can bring)
1 x Ravager with 3 Dark Lances

That gets me to around 600 or so points though. Dark Eldar rely on a lot of small units typically, and also have a pretty diverse fast attack section that you usually fill up as soon as possible.

This seems like a 40K version of my Fantasy Project (Shameless plug is in my link). Was thinking of doing a 40K one at some point, oh well.

HQ: Flying Hive Tyrant, TL Devourers with BL Worms
Core 1: 30 Termagants, 10 with Devourers
Core 2: 3 Tyranid Warriors with Deathspitters
Elite 1: 3 Hive Guard
Elite 2: 3 Zoanthropes, Neurothrope
Heavy 1: Carnifex with 2 TL Devourers with BL Worms

Not following your rules exactly, but this is my 1000 point list

That's in every single list. Weapons vary most games and firewarriors are often 12 man with devilfish, but that's the core of the army and has been since I started it in 3rd edition. Since 6th though I'd tended towards taking exactly 1 Riptide as well in games >1k points. They're so versatile and durable that they're basically auto-include. However, plenty of people strongly dislike them so it's dropped on a moment's notice if someone says they don't want to play against it.

Wolf Guard Battle Leader.

1*Long Fangs Pack

Ling Fangs will get missile launchers, the Grey Hunters will be set up as Bolter packs with a Plasma Gun or 2, and the Sky Claws will be just equipped with CCWs.

I tend to have a slight preference for numbers over equipment.

For my space marines its:
Tactical squad with flamer/missile launcher
Scout squad
2 terminator squads
Devastater squad with missiles and lascannons
Large cultist blob
Small csm squad with flamer
Terminators again and a hellbrute.

Not the most effective lists but I loved the look of terminators since I started

I'll usually sink half (500 point) of my DA to field a Demi Company and then compose a Lion's Blade detachment.

500 point is exactly what you need to use:
- Chaplain with Jump Pack
- 5 Jump pack marine with melta bombs
- 5 tact marine (x3)
- 5 Devastator (2 Missile Launcher)

Not so much for punching, but enough to provide ObjSec through the field and use the full BS on Overwatch with everything.

Usually I add a Dreadnought in the Demi Company (to provide him ObjSec), a Ravenwing Attack Squadron, a small Deathwing Redemption Force (that ususlly include a Venerable Dreadnought with Drop Pod) and/or a 10th Support Squadron of a 10 man scouts.

Nurgle Lord on Palanquin of Nurgle

Two units of naked 25 Cultists. Lord should be embedded in one of these units to give good leadership and take bullets.

Chaos Predator with Warpflame and a Havoc.

5 Nurgle Bikers kitted out with melta and flamer.

Point towards enemy and run. I know this comes in at below 1000 points, which may leave room for a unit of Spawn, as more bullet fodder, or alternatively a unit of Plague Marines to take and hold positions. In a pinch, a Dark Apostle could lead a unit of Cultists to make sure they stick around until they reach CC.

This is the core of all of my army lists. It's 1005 points. I'd of course always add other stuff, but you asked what the first 1000 points was.

10 - 12 Burna Boyz in a Trukk

Raven Guard Space Marines
2 10-man Tactical Squads with Grav or Plasma, or 1 Tac Squad and 1 Sniper Scout squad
Devastator Squad with anti-tank weapons
10-man Assault Marines, or 5 - 10 Vanguard Veterans with Jump Packs and Lightning Claws (sometimes other weapons if I have points or need to save points).

1 10-man Vanguard squad with Plasma Calivers
1 10-man Ranger squad with Arc Rifles
5-man Infiltrator squad
Dunecrawler Onagers with Neutron Lasers (+1 Phosphor Blaster if I can afford it)

Neat topic, here's mine for Space Marines.

Troops: 2x 5 Tacs w/ Plas, Combi-Plas, Rhino

Fast: Stormtalon or Land Speeder Typhoon.

Heavy: Vindicator (although it would be a Sicaran if I had one).

That's about 500, but add an HQ, second Stormtalon and more tanks and speeders and we're in business.

1 10 man unit of Immortals with Gauss blasters.
1 unit of 3 Wraiths with 2 whip coils.
2 Annihilation Barges.

I think it all adds up to be abit over 1k points but this is my go-to list for most games over 1k.

If memory serves, that should come out to exactly 1000 points, with two troops, a heavy, and an elite. Well, technically three troops and no elites, under the Black Legion supplement, but close enough.

Not really the best army, or even a good one, or even as close an approximation to good as the CSM book allows, but sometimes you just want to field some chaos marines in your chaos marine army, ya know?
