Beyond the Start Collecting! box, what do folks recommend for a new Lizardmen player? Saurus Warriors look pretty beefy, and I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the visuals of the skinks. I'm not sure I'd like to use the Carnosaur though - in any case, I would have to track down a monster size square base and I've no idea what dimensions those are meant to come in, or even if anyone else does them. I'd prefer several slightly weaker leaders to slip into units of Saurus Warriors rather than one big badass, and I'd really like to get plenty of skinks into the force. How should I go about building up to around 1000pts?

Thanks!

P.S. For either 8th or 9th, though I hear Mantic are working on a Lizardmen book for KoW.

For what game?
AoS, 9th Age, 8th edition, Reforged, etc?

8th: Skinks. All of them.
9th: I dunno. They should be able to tell you over there though.
Either: Square Bases should be your next purchase.

The Mantic list that accommodates peoples Lizardmen armies is already out. It's in the Uncharted Empires supplement, that includes lists to utilize most Warhammer collections not already covered by the lists in the basic book.
You can buy it in physical form here:
http://www.manticgames.com/mantic-shop/kings-of-war/books/product/kings-of-war-uncharted-empires.html

and in digital form here:
http://www.manticdigital.com/product/preorder-uncharted-empires/

and the list is also availible at:
http://kow2.easyarmy.com/
but it's hard to know what units fit what entries unless you're already familiar with the KoW rules.

Here's a couple of links to places selling square bases

In the case of 8th, the best choices where ton of skins, a Slaan and lone saurus characters on cold ones. Two or more flying units and the stegadon where decent too.
Saurus where seriously outperformed by skins, so can't really recommend them for 8th.

In 9th is harder to give a clear suggestion, since most things are similarly good.
For a 1k game I would have a skink chaman, one or two small skin units (hunters or braves), a unit of saurus, a saurus BSB and either a Support (Thyroscutus) or combat monster (Taurosaur/Carnosaur). This should give you a good CC, ranged and magical capabilities.

Saurus on cold ones are decent and all 3 systems. Great in 8th, good (or were i haven't looked at the new book) in 9th and okay in KoW

If i had to start some lizards for T9A (9th), i would take a lot of skinks first... with some Kroxigors. And then Temple Guards+Slann... and a lot of monsters.

The guy on Miniwargaming always runs a huge block of Temple Guard and a Slann which seems to pretty much bulldoze its way through all opposition.
