View Full Version : Do you still buy Warhammer models, and why?

This came up in another thread, so I thought I'd ask the question: For those of you who are still buying Warhammer models, what're you buying them for? Age of Sigmar, Warhammer Fantasy (8th Edition, Oldhammer, etc.), 9th Age, Kings of War, some other game? I thought I'd post a poll and see what results we get. For example, I still buy models occasionally (albeit off of eBay and online web stores, not direct from GW), but they're for Warhammer Fantasy 8th Edition, 9th Age, Kings of War, and maybe Frostgrave.

The poll allows for multiple choice, so if you buy Warhammer models for multiple games, make sure you vote on all of them.

I selected 8th/9th and AoS. AoS is an "if". It all depends how AoS will evolve. But I did bought the Khorne stuff for use in 8th with custom 8th edition rules. I am temped with the Orcs and I certainly will buy Silver Quest and all upcomming Tzeentch releases. For me almost all AoS mini's can be used in 8th, it's fun to make rules for it.

Thus now I am using the AoS miniatures for 8th, but if AoS matures, I will certainly buy mini's to use in AoS too.

For me miniature wise GW is still doing fine.

Just to clarify, are you asking only about models released as 'Warhammer fantasy battle' products (models released up to the end of the end times) or including models released as 'warhammer: age of sigmar' products as well.

I have bought some older wfb models to complete 8th edition armies recently, but the majority of my purchases have been newly designed AoS models to use with AoS

Buddy Bear

All Warhammer models, whether they're Warhammer Fantasy or Warhammer: Age of Sigmar. If you're buying AOS models to use for AOS, click AOS. If you're buying AOS models to use for Kings of War (winged Sigmarines as Elohim, etc.), click Kings of War. And so on.

Stopped buying gw products since AoS dropped. Don't want them getting the wrong idea and assuming I like AoS. And since the wfb banner is gone and any money I spend for wfb gives credibility, I don't buy gw. Just means my ttg money pot is growing and I can splash out when I find an outlet.

I avoid GW models as much as possible. I play Kings of War. For my recent/in progress Abyssals army it is completely non-GW. I have a mix of Mierce, Enigma, Reaper and Mantic models in it.

Now I have wanted to do skaven/ratkin for a couple of years and I just bought that project. Obviously thatbhas to be 100% GW models, but I bought second hand off of ebay and Bartertown to make sure thay GW got none of my cash.

... and honestly, sonce the start of End Times GW has made only 2 kits I would even want, the new spirit hosts and the giant verminlord. The rest of the things they make now days are just overwrought, overly busy, outnof proportion, weirdly posed ... I have absolutely no interest in any of it. And WoC was one of my largest collections and favorite armies, so it isn't as if they haven't done my army yet.

I snag great deals I find on eBay to complete my Fantasy armies. Even though I don't currently play I would like to again when I move to an area with an active community. Until then I just enjoy painting, and the sight of a huge fully painted Fantasy army is a beautiful sight.

The only thing I've bought in the last year has been a goblin shaman clam pack because I wanted something plastic to convert into a fleabag wiz (mounted shaman) and I felt it was reasonably priced at Ģ6.50.

That is mainly for Kings of war, the rest of my army is mantic but I do use them for 8th and T9A.

Voted Oldhammer, I buy from Ebay and forums all the time.

My WHFB army is Greenskins (Night Goblins mainly, but expanding into Orcs now) and I'm an 80's/90's guy so it's pretty much all Kev Adams Goblinoid stuff for me, and GW don't sell that anymore.
The core of my army is two sets of the Night Gobbos from the 7th ed starter though, and I do have a few modern command pieces in there too.

Voted AoS since I've bought only new GW fantasy models since AoS came out in January with Fyreslayers. Didn't really have anything left for 8th Ed by ET since my collections were complete for both armies, but I did by two FB boxes for KoW use for ,y Abyssal dwarf army to break up the ...lower quality of the older models.

so since AoS dropped and I play 40k and Heresy. I've only given GW about...$1,200-1,300 USD, I'd say.

The only warhammer models i have bought are some goblins that i needed to finish off my horde because I'm sure they will go OOP soon and if they get an updated for AOS might be 10x as large and have wings. Most of the guys in my area seem to be finishing of forces they were in the middle of and starting new stuff with different company's. So i selected 9th age even though its just to finish off my stuff and i won't be buying anymore.

But do you buy models only from Mantic or also GW?

Niall78
07-05-2016, 17:16
Stopped buying GW miniatures a good while ago as their cost to value didn't make sense to me any more. Proxying became a big thing within my gaming circle when it came to WFB. We simply found it impossible to invest new players in the game with the GW price tag. So we allowed full proxying and kept a steady trickle of new blood entering the system.

GW probably lost more money on rules and army book sales in our group than it did on miniature sales. They'd already killed that golden goose years before AoS dropped.

Niall78
07-05-2016, 17:21
But do you buy models only from Mantic or also GW?

New blood in my area has been buying Mantic lately. They can have a decent sized army of the table for Ģ50. For Ģ100 they can field a very large force. For players that play multiple table-top, board games and RPGs such prices make investing in mass-fantasy gaming doable without dropping other games they like.

For Fantasy: GWs recent product slashing has caused me to buy more stuff from them than I have in years- small bits and pieces to fill gaps in my older armies. It may very well be a delusion of mine that they'll ever see a table. It won't last, and is basically the last time they'll be getting my money, without drastic changes (re-released Specialist Games boxes may tempt me again as single purchases).

For older games: I've been gathering various Specialist Games for ages- mainly Epic and Warmaster, and mainly off eBay. That's nearly stopped now, as my collections are near complete or alternative manufacturers are simply producing better stuff. Those games get some play, when I can find opponents.

Since AoS dropped I have not bought anything warhammer-related, but if Silver-Tower holds what the art promises, I will definietly spend money on that. Generally, I tend to buy miniatures regardless of the game they belong to, but if the game is good, that's a big plus, of course. AoS is not that interesting as a game, but if I get into it eventually, the "field whatever you like"-nature of AoS is something I really like.

No. From GW I buy some washes for which I haven't foun a replacement yet. Nothing else. If I need anything fantasy related, I buy it from elsewhere. The new GW strange things are not usable for KoW or 9th, or Frostgrave or Dragon rampant, so no need.

I am still fleshing out the rest of my armies that they still sell and am interested in, which gets smaller and smaller every day as most of the models that I am interested in are being phased out. I use them for oldhammer, War and Sorcery, and KOW. Most of my purchases are on EBay these days.

Havenīt bought anything produced by GW during or after the end times. I simply donīt like the new aesthetic of the miniatures, that includes AoS weird stuff. A mini or two may spark my interest, but usually requires too much conversion to justify the high price.

I've just realised that I've not bought any new models from GW since 2013 (unless there is something I've forgotten lurking in a box somewhere). I think my last purchases were some Morghul Knights and a Phoenix both of which were to add to KoW armies.

I'm not keen on the style of the AoS miniatures as they don't fit with the armies I have assembled over the years, ditto some of the later 8th edition output. Luckily for me there is plenty of stuff floating around ebay for me to fill out some of my old GW units if I need to and plenty of other manufacturers making miniatures which are a better match for the fantasy aesthetics I like.

I'm occasionally tempted by some of the newer GW miniatures until I see the price.

Zywus
09-05-2016, 11:21
I occasionally purchase some GW fantasy stuff second hand. (Got a great deal on the old metal Leon Leonceur on griffon lately).

All bought with an eye to use in KoW, although I would consider playing a battle of 9th age or a older WHFB edition should anyone in my group of lapsed warhammer players would like to try it out.

I'm still bitter enough over AoS that I'd not be prepared to buy anything new fantasy related from GW even if it was something I though to be good value. Considering the art direction and pricing going on lately though, I doubt that resolve will ever be tested anyway.

Last month I bought a box of necropolis knights. It was discounted and figured maybe I'd need them later (now that you can mount characters on snakes in 9th age). Before that I think I picked up a box of morghast last summer to top up a unit and a Bloodthirster (the last one) I took from a shop that went out of business and had a 50% off sale. Those are brand new purchases on shops, I've also bought plenty of 2nd hand stuff on ebay, trading groups, etc.

Other than that, the fat wyvern is growing on me now that I've seen it quite a few different paintjobs on it. Still don't know what kind of base size it would fit so I'm not sure I'll ever get around to. It's a prime candidate for "I'll grab it if I ever see it heavily discounted".

I don't buy much now, after finishing off my armies last year before AoS hit when I saw the writing was ont he wall and that GW statement that they were going to streamline their range. Of the few models I have bought were for 8th/9th/Oldhammer like some last bits of TK stuff because well I can't have a big enough army of these old bones. The one option that I though was lacking was a 40k option in the poll thought as I can see me picking up some models for 40k (especially if the new Elf models continue in the Eldarish style).

I am building a dedicated T9A O&G army. (Pictures at http://www.the-ninth-age.com/index.php?thread/11391-o-g-paint-log/ if anyone is interested)
My original plan was to use Mantic Orcs which are pretty nice. Unfortunately, I fell in love with Savage Orcs. So much goofy awesomeness. I couldn't resist.
But since GW Savage Orcs do not fit the Mantic Orc aesthetic, I decided to go for GW models in the end. Now it looks like I support AoS to GW :(

I was planning to buy as much as possible from ebay. I don't know if that is only the case in Germany but GW stuff is increadibly expensive on ebay. I can usually save less than 10 % compared to retail prices and have to deal with potentially ugly paint jobs. In the end I bought most stuff from online retailers but I threw in some Avatars of War, Mantic and a lot of Gamezone stuff at the edges.

I still buy models, I selected 8th and Oldhammer since I buy stuff either to play games of 8th (finishing off many army projects and starting some new ones) or I buy what I regard as classic models just because I loved them (generally 4/5th)

Most of my stuff is nabbed off ebay but if I couldn't get there I would probably go out of my way to avoid (directly) giving GW my money

It is quite a mix, if stuff is badly painted you can usually get it for cheaper, but I have stopped getting badly painted plastics as stripping the plastic is much more hassle than with Metal.
Ne win box stuff always goes for a high price though, even the 4th/5th ed plastic beastmen which I think look terrible.

I think patience on ebay is the key. There are loads of bargains to be had (in the Uk there are anyway) but not every single time, sometimes you have to just let people pay close to retail and write it off. Badly painted or mislabeled stuff is great for a deal.

Hahaha that is an awesome looking army. I love the manticore. Mierce makes some amazing stuff. Thanks for posting that picture gives me a good sense of scale for them. Lol at Druc the Meat Hulk on that tiny base. He looks so funny (almost cute) on it. One day i'll get that Manticore. Your picture convinced shows it is truly a large and fearsome beast. Even with the Mierce measurements i find it hard to picture how things will look on the table so thanks for that.

Druc is an absolute beast! What do you use him as in KOW? I use mine as a 275 pointer in 8th Edition.

Given that this thread is big upping mierce (well deserved... pricey but lovely minis) i'll do my bit. I love using Mierce miniatures in Chillhammer (8th +) . They look great on the tabletop and not out of place next to GW minis imo. I could only imagine fielding a whole army of them.

Tilean Colossus (forgot what Mierce calls this mini)... it is very Jason and the Argonauts/statue of Bravos from Game of Thrones. Warhammer fantasy 8th rules are on the eefl forums for anyone interested. I use this guy with my Dogs of War army. It is similar size to Druc.

Ophias (the arrogant). In 8th i use as a Daemon prince of Slaanesh. I love the hautiness of this model. One of my mierce faves. Id like to get more of their snake people eventually.

Size comparison. Smaller than the other 2. Similar in size to the Gw plastic Daemon Prince.

Raging heroes... if anyone has that bat/membrane wing guy (ur-khan?) either in heroic or legendary can they please post pictures.

Thank you [emoji1]

I buy for the cause of saddening nostalgia, but that wasn't a poll option.

I have started several new projects since AoS dropped. I like the fact that the game seems playable with smaller armies than its predecessor and I can choose my units freely. I don't like the fact that WHFB was discontinued before it was complete and I don't like the new setting but I like the idea of building small, almost warband-size armies and I love the look of round bases.

That being said, majority of my purchases recently have been old metal models from eBay. Currently on my workspace is occupied by Chaos army using 4th and 5th edition models and Orc army using 6th edition models. All metal :skull:

I have some square based project also in the pipeline, but they don't require any new purchases.

I bought Chaos Warriors, Chaos Chosen, Dragon Ogres, and a Demon Prince to complete my Warriors of Chaos Army. Then I bought some High Elven Spearmen, Lothern Sea Guard, Ellyrian Reavers, Shadow Warriors and White Lions to complete my friend's High Elf army and bought some Orcs on War Boars, an Orc Shaman and Goblin Fanatics to complete my other friend's Orcs & Goblins army (all these in just one month), so that we can play together without issues up to 2000 points vs each other and up to 5000 with Chaos teamed up with O&G against HE. I wanted to buy these quickly, before the supply will dry up. Technically we play T9A, but for us it's simply Warhammer. We firmy reject the idea of converting our miniatures to round bases :)

Recently bought a Start Collecting Pestilens for use in Mordheim/bulking out my Skaven for 9th. Actually a decent value for the money, but still left me with a somewhat bitter taste in my mouth, consumer power and all that... Still considering getting a second box to finish off with as many Pestilens units I might ever need though...
Have bought a bit on eBay as well, but guessing that doesn't count...

I haven't bought a gw figure since they killed wfb. I would probably still buy 40k figures if I felt like it, but I don't much care for the game's current state and have little time for straight modeling. I've really only been playing dropzone commander this year. Although I've bought some bolt action figures and a few tamiya kits just for fun.

I try my best to use Ebay, or buy an occasional box that is on the shelf of the game store I play at since most of what I buy is discontinued I am not sure if I am supporting GW or Not.

I'm sure in their books all those purchases are under AoS label, so they are happy it sells. When all old models will be gone, and the likes of us will stop purchasing then there will be a drop in "AoS" sales. But this will happen gradually, as models are replaced.

Ive bought far too many wh models this year, i need to stop so i can get stuff painted... mainly getting stuff to finish the end times series tho - my bloodbound guys will happily fulfil the role of the Skaramor for the Archaon games.

I will chip in that i find the new round and oval bases infinitely better than squares, my demigryphs now fit their bases, whereas my chaos knights look ten times scarier on big ovals... both units are on the same size bases!

I just got back into the hobby a few years back, starting with skirmish games (Freebooter's Fate and Malifaux) with my wife with the ultimate goal of building up interest to get into Warhammer proper. I'd just started to bulk up my old forces of Night Goblins, Skaven and Lizardmen and gotten my wife some Wood Elves when AoS hit. We read through the rules together, and my wife went: "You'll never get me to even try that one", and our collections of Malifaux/Freebooter miniatures started to grow exponentially. Then my brother, who used to be really big on Mordheim when originally released, needed to stay in our guest room for some months, and when he decided he wanted to get his girlfriend going on Mordheim we were quick to oblige! Bought some stuff on eBay, some Frostgrave plastics (amazing quality kits!) and most recently some plague monks from GW in my first purchase since AoS dropped for a complete Pestilens warband (except for my Reaper Bones Wererat/Rat Ogre and a Plague Furnace Priest I had lying around). Can't see myself getting anything except eBay in the future though, nothing since pre-Nagash has piqued my interest...

8th edition is still the current edition of WHF to me, and I still buy the odd thing here and there to use for my existing armies.

I also bought some WHF models to use in Frostgrave, and I'll definitely buy a few more characters to use them in WHQ:ST.

5th edition, and if all goes to plan, Realm of Chaos using mostly 5th edition rules :) (I'd probably rather use 2nd for this project, but it'll be easier to stick with what I know and will use later on)

I haven't bought anything for fantasy since about a month or so before AOS came out, in fact the only GW thing i've bought in the last year is the betrayal at calth set and I don't see that changing.

I simply don't like fantasy new look.
