In short: does basing matter in WHQ: ST?

Is the facing of a model relative to others important or not? I wonder whether square bases would work better: they give a definite direction a model "looks", different to round bases. So are there any gameplay implications of this in the new WHQ, or does it simply not matter?

I don't think so, its all about being 'adjacent' - weather you're adjacent to something if you're both beside portals I don't know, but it's more about thh square that you are in.

Circles look better and if it comes to it you could always retroactively paint on arc-marks on the lips of the bases, but I doubt it would be that complicated.

I can't find any references to the bases or orientation in the rules, all that matters is the spaces the models occupy.

Doesn't matter at all Darnok. The squares are around 36x36mm so having a few 40mm bases on the table is quite playable. I am basing my set on squares and it is looking great so far. Using the base sizes of the equivalent models in 8th Edition too.
