Right, this is something that I've thought about for a while.

Ok, Necrons are mostly entombed and in stasis on planets, right. In their Tombs.

Now, where are Necron starships? Are they also on the planet surface? I'm guessing they'll be huge hulking things so won't really be adapted for planetary taking off but would need to be constructed in space.

So, there are several posibilities.

1) Necron ships have always been awake and arrive when necron tomb worlds "awaken"
2) They are in stasis, floating round in the middle of space where no one would find them.
3) They are already on the planet and need to take off
4) once the necrons awake, they build them.

I'm gonna look for more info on BFG necrons, but I'm guessing it wont really address how necron ships and fleets come around.

They could also be existing in hyperspace, out of phase with the 40k reality, and then are brought back into phase when the Necrons awaken and need them.

But, I easily imagine they can construct more. But they probably don't, since their number of ships is already idealised for their population numbers.

The Nightbringer's personal craft was hidden in another dimension (see 'Nightbringer', Graham Macneil.) but he was special...

Myself, I see the imagrey being akin to the SHadows from B5, whose ships slept beneath the surfaces of various worlds untill awoken and called to service.

But they'd have to be kept very low beneath the surface to avoid detection, and BFG ships are enormous.

However, their rules state they "phase out" of space battles, so they may teleport into space from the surface, and are often found on the edge of systems, only to be reawoken by the passing of another vessel.

I personally think that they'd be hanging around in deep space. The necrons hang around in the hidden depths of dead worlds, so I think the ships would do the space-borne equivalent, sitting unactivated (or barely activated) far from any planets until called.

It could be both - they could be partially out of phase and hidden under a planet's surface, with the Tombs being the command decks.

not that I'm known for my extensive Necron knowledge.

What with phasing, inertialess drives, teleporting and realspace FTL travel, I think Necrons can leave their ships whereever they damn well please. If they can fly across the galaxy in moments, I don't see them having much trouble taking off from a planet. There is also fluff about their light cruisers landing on Mars, isn't there?

BFG says:

"From time to time reports were made of strange space craft encountered on the edge of newly discovered systems, which appeared derelict at first but when approached became active."

Occasionally, escort sized vessels are buried on planets. (Angelis/Gorkamorka planet)

5 Shroud light cruisers attacked Mars. 1 landed on Mars, 1 other landed before being destroyed, The three others I think were destroyed.

Why they'd park them near stars (which are hubs of activity, relatively) is beyond me, then.

Thought BFG ships are big, they're tiny when compared to a planet.
