All "normal gangs " Cawdor, Delaque, Escher, Van Saar, Orlock, Goliath have no special rules, it only their weapon lists that's different.
And I think No special rules is the best, but chack out the rules for Ratskin or Scavvies on http://www.specialist-games.com/necromunda/rulebook.asp .

Goliath, Orlock has got new models, so if you're looking for the newest models, they are you're choice.
But all the old Minitures are really nice too.

I agree, if you're just starting out in Necromunda then no special rules are best, but if you insist theres also Redemptionists.

Van saar have also got some new minis, but they are awfull, luckily the old ones are still available.
If your going to get one of the core gangs from he rule book, they all start the same, but the available skills differ. E.G. goliath get mainly muscle and combat skills while van saar get techy and shooting. This means that each house gets there own personality after 3 or 4 games.

I actually like the new van saar, mixing and matching leads to some cool looking warbands.

van saar will give you an easier ride as a first gang, because you will pick up techno and shooting skills early on, which are likely to make your ammo rolls easier and your shooting more effective, or you get things like medic which make your gang much tough in the long run, or inventor which can be very handy.

a normal gang would do you if your starting,i my self will be doin a redemtionist gang now they are AWSOME!the best gang models i have seen!but if i was starting id go van saar as they seem easy and everyone else said:p but i never played as them:cries: only as enforcers and hive net (are they official?because i cant find them on the necromunda site but i found there minis and them in WDs campaign so i thiught they where and i used them as a "normal gang"

Normal gangs are best.

The best way is to basically decide which models you like best. The only significant difference is that Escher (and to a lesser extent, Goliaths) have more models with pistol/close combat weapons. The others are all relatively similar.

Escher are imo the best looking of the original gangs by a long shot.

Pretty sure I have at least one of every model in their range.

Goliath and Orlocks used to be great when starting out because of all the plastics left over from the boxed set (the models were not great looking but being plastic they were very convertable)

Too bad I cant really get a gamethese days none of the kids seem to show much interest in the classics. To me the original Necromunda and GorkaMorka are the most complete and fun game systems GW ever devised.

I repeat Verbatim what he just said.
I was gonna reply but JP got the right of it.

hive.net are not a stand alone gang, there converted van saars using the van saar rules. Enforcers on the other hand, are official.

In our campaign the scavvies are nigh on unstoppable down to their numbers and their cheapness in the game. In addition they get "freebies" every game (zombies/dogs/ghouls) and I find that I spend the first bit of the game trying to neutralize them before I can get anywhere near his real gang (i.e. bottle test inducing)... and don't get me started about Scalies. I like Delaque because they look cool in my humble opinion but I do tend to get spanked a lot so don't follow my lead whatever you do. cawdor seem pretty handy...

I've always played Van Saar, mainly due to their shooty+tech skill combination. They can get quite broken by the end of a long campaign(draw multiple +BS and specialists and you'll see what I mean). I've typically stuck to reccomending Orlocks and Van Saar to new players I've introduced, and its worked well. Orlocks are probably the most balanced force, with a good draw of skills, while Van Saar are the best shooty gang, which is what this game is often all about. For combat-favoring players, I find Redemptionists the best gang to play, as Goliaths tend to be boring. It'll make the learning curve a bit rougher, but will be ever the much more fun once you get ahold of the game. In the case you decide to play Van Saar, make sure you're capable of converting for the specialists, as you want to make sure your BS5 Sniper/Plasma/Grenade Launcher/Giant Phallus is all properly shown up.

I add my voice to advising towards one of the house gangs without special rules. I've played Cawdor, Escher, Ratskins and Redemptionists and found them fun to play in that order.

By far the most important thing is to get a gang with models you like. Anything else can be sorted out after that. The guys I play with don't have a problem with me playing my Eschers as Van Saars if I really want to (if it really puts your back up that much you could always say it's a new house with the same skills). So, although it's good to have some idea of the house you want to run with beforehand, don't let it push you into getting stuff you don't want.

Secondly, be aware that, in my opinion, a shooting gang will usually out-perform a hand-to-hand gang. This doesn't mean you'll have no fun playing a close combat gang, it's just that you may find things a little stacked against you as time goes on (especially when those 3A, Fast Shotting Gunfighters turn up). Hand to hand is always more risky than shooting and, although you can improve the odds, it's never such a sure thing.

Finally, when picking a gang it's always a good idea to have some sympathy for your opponent. Although I thoroughly enjoyed one-shot flamering all and sundry with my Redemptionists, I didn't enjoy having no-one to play against after a while.

As for my personal recommendation? Escher. Who can watch Sin City and not want to run a gang of leather-clad prostitutes with machine guns?

cheers

EDIT: Just one more note of caution. Before getting ANY hand-to-hand gangs make sure you are NOT using the 'line-of-sight to charge' rule. It renders the close combat game almost worthless.

Enforcers are ok but are a little boring with not been able to hire new gang members and not been able to buy weapons etc etc

Still their models are cool :)

Escher is where the money is. Not only are they the best looking necromunda models, I believe they're the only gang who can get swords. A better 5 credits has never been spent. parrying with juves will give you an edge over any standard armed ganger. With a sword and stub pistol you get base 2 attacks and can force your opponent to reroll their die. Instant hand to hand ownage.

I've really enjoyed my spyrers. The downside is that they don't get new weapons and equipment like the regular gangs, but what they have can get better. My friends hate them though.
