View Full Version : Unforgiven Land Raider Crusader

01-08-2006, 08:01

Some of you may remember the commissioned Unforgiven Command Squad (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37630&highlight=Unforgiven) I made some time ago. Now I made a Land Raider Crusader and painted 3 terminators for the same client, so I thought I'd share it with you.

The Crusader arrived assembled, which meant twice much work with proper assembly. I had to rip all the parts apart, clean and file them, remove mould lines and tonnes of glue, and file and bend them to fit.

The Terminators are models the client won on MAS auctions, which were then sent half of the world to him, and which he now re-sent to us for painting so that we can send them to him again. 1 of them is my early conversion, and the other two are Scibor's.

I just could not stand removing all the mould lines after Scibor, and thinking how to cover the more messy areas with paint gave me a headache. These models are such a pain to paint! all the details moulded on the GS looks OK on pics, but when painting you notice it's hardly visible and not defined enough. It requires to paint some of the missing sculpt details! And then there are fingerprints on the other side. Blah. I take no responsibility for the look, pose and gear of the Chaplain and Librarian, I just gave them some colours. And don't ask about the Chaplain's Chaos star. Just don't.

Terminator Master:

Scibor's Librarian:

Scibor's Chaplain:

Anyways, I'm going for vacation tomorrow and I'll be here in a week for a while and then after another week, so don't go mad if I don't answer your questions for the next week or two. Thanks for looking, and for any comments you leave!

Quit making us look bad! those are beautifully done, i like the use of the winged hussar part

01-08-2006, 08:35
That detail on the Land Raider is absolutely superb....

01-08-2006, 08:40
Howerth, you never cease to astound me. Stunning as always.
PS. Have you got any further on the Emperor you are doing in Project Logs?
Cheers, Steve

01-08-2006, 08:51
That land raider is truly beautiful. Just simply amazing.

01-08-2006, 08:55
Wow! That is one fantastic looking LR! That's a Golden Deamon award if I ever saw one. nice work

01-08-2006, 09:01
Very nice, as always, Hortwerth.
I really like the Grand Master. Nice use of the Marneus model, much better than the original use.
I think the other two HQs are a little generic, but chalk that up to my own personal taste, I never really liked plastics converted into HQs.
The freehand on the Land Raider is, of course, superb.
Keep it up...

01-08-2006, 09:03
Impressing job. :)

P.S. Podobające mi to się jest, naprawdę robi wrażenie.

01-08-2006, 09:06
BLOODY HELL......you are truly blessed by the emperor of paints and modell convertion.
Keep up the jolly good work:)

01-08-2006, 09:13
Freaking AWESOME Land Raider...

We're not worthy!!!

How long does it take to paint that kind of detail?

01-08-2006, 09:23
Always felt you were a better modeller than scibor, now we have proof ;)

01-08-2006, 09:39
Absolutely fantastic.

Hortwerth, how do you do the "badly shaven" part on the Librarianīs and your Avatar Marineīs head and chin?
I tried to copy it with thinned down black ink and more or less failed.

01-08-2006, 10:04
I do not see a picks:(

Thx for your opinion on Scibor works

01-08-2006, 10:57
Snazzy.Brilliant freehand. The only thing are those nametags on the backs. The lettering looks a little too casual, and almost ruins the whole atmosphere.

01-08-2006, 11:33
As always, AWSOME stuff. Love the paint job, oh, and I got the Infested Bases, didn't expect so many, they're quite lovely and my whole tyraind horde will slowly be based with them! Thanks again.

01-08-2006, 11:50

Just one thing though, I see it with more DA models.. The "IMPERATOR DEUS" inscription on the shoulderpad. That doens't make any sense, since the Dark Angels are known for their believe that the Emperor, beloved by all, is a man, NOT a god (deus).

Could be nit-picking though.. :P

01-08-2006, 12:58
its good. really ********** good! well done on another superb paint job

You put Scibor to shame....That land raider is just rediculously good.:D

Could you give us an idea of what colours you used for the greens and bone on the land raider? please.

01-08-2006, 13:24
That landraider is out of this world ,All i can say is WOW :D you work is trully mindblowing :D

01-08-2006, 13:35
I think I just wet myself, that landraider is the *****, freaken awsome man. How long did it take you to finish.

01-08-2006, 14:09
The land raider is jaw droppingly good. By the looks of it, you actually engraved the word "Unforgiven" onto the top front door...!

01-08-2006, 14:23
What... no pics of the interior?

The boyz
01-08-2006, 14:47
Wow, what can I say. Fantastic work Hortwerth, truly brilliant. That Landraider is superb. I love it the paint job. I love the marble effect to the armour. My favourite bit though has to be the freehand on those two winged skeleton angels, they look superb.

Great job too, on those three character's. I especially like the Terminator Master, the conversion work and the paint job on him is outstanding. I love the marble effect on his Power sword. I also like the Chaplains Crozius, that looks great as well.

Brilliant work Hortwerth.

01-08-2006, 15:25
i love it
how the hell u paint on a model i need a tut

01-08-2006, 16:13
As always Hortwerth, absolutely fantastic. I think I can safely say that your level is the level that everyone here aspires to.

01-08-2006, 17:25
i want it, oh do i want it

old guard
01-08-2006, 21:35
You know I look at things like that and then I look round accross my own desk and ...I really don't like you;)

That is so much better than that thing that won GDUK last year. its brilliant!
Mind you I'd be happy if I could just achieve a smooth finish with bleached bone let alone creating free hand images. well done!

01-08-2006, 21:37
Thank you for all the kind words. You make me slid into egocentrism ;)

I didn't make anything more with the Emperor, but the client replied finally 3 weeks after I e-mailed him and told all is OK, so I'll be making progress after I come back from my vacation.

These all took me I think 6 workdays, around 6-8 hours a day. So that's around 40 hours in total, and around 25 of them was spent on the Land Raider.

That's quite quick if you ask me :)

There are no pics of the interior as there's nothing special with it. It's just painted bone, no specials. Client should be happy nevertheless as I could just don't care with unassembling the model and leave it grey. Could I really? Hell no!

The bone is desert yellow mixed with white for highlights. The armour was first done using airbrush - it was the first time I used it for anything other than undercoating, so I'm quite happy with the result. I airbrushed it desert yellow, then mixed increasing amounts of white and airbrushed it couple of times with these mixes. The armour was then washed gently with Desert Yellow and Snakebite, and white in places, and highlighted elf flesh and white. Freehands are mainly Desert Yellow and Elf Flesh, with Snakebite shadows and white highlights. Cracked marble and all the stone-like weathering really tied the freehands with the model.

The green is Goblin green base over the bone armour, 2 layers of Snot in the middle, then lots of washes of Dark Angels Green, highlighted with Goblin. The marble effect is Goblin lines, then just random spills of Snot, then random spills of watered black, then black thick lines, then DA green wash, DA green to merge the black and greens, then re-applied Goblin lines in places, re-lined with DA green and black in places. The weathering streaks on this is Codex and Fortress grey washed with DA green. Then there's slight dustying and muddying with drybrushed Shadow, Codex and Space Wolves greys and Snakebite and Bestial washes respectively.
Oh, and all the exhausts, engine grills, tracks and weathering near them have been given several wahses of Vallejo Smoke. Gotta love this paint! It works so wondefully, yet it's so hard to describe why... I borrowed it from Michal for this part, and now I have to buy one myself!

01-08-2006, 22:38
your land raider is AWSOME!!!!!!!!

01-08-2006, 23:21
Excuse me whilst I sweep my jaw up and leave.

Why do the rest of us even bother?

01-08-2006, 23:39

Did you model the cracks in the marble, or paint them? Either way, its fantastic. You deserve every bit of praise you get.

02-08-2006, 00:32

I was gonna beg as to how you did the marble effect, as I was imagining something like this for several months now. I sort of understand what you've done with the green, but could you please explain how you did the bone marble? Unless I missed that of course. Is there a generic way of going about marble - by that I mean a general guide for any colour? If you have any advice, it would be eternally appreciated. :)

02-08-2006, 00:50
Both the Raider and the Marines are absolutely stunning.

02-08-2006, 06:59
The bone has no marble effect on it - it is just cracked and there are brownish streaks going down from any bolt or crack. Like it was under influence of water constantly.
The cracks are just Snakebite Leather "lightning" lines, re-lined with Skull White on one side (as if there was a light source to one side and top of the tank and the brown lines were really cracks that need highlighting)

02-08-2006, 11:02
Beautiful, Awesome detail. Did you mask the area to get the Angels or were those freehand?

the dark angel
02-08-2006, 17:35
you are AWSOME your land raider challages that of the uk slayer sword winner 1!you are fantastic!

02-08-2006, 17:38
This is indeed porn in tank form, how dare you post it.

The characters are nice, but the tank.. why dont you take it to games day and get yourself a nice piece of cutlery? :D

02-08-2006, 19:54
The LR really does look like it's made from stone...

So, let's see, you've done three DA LRs now, two of which are your own... we're still waiting for the third stupedous installement :D.

04-08-2006, 00:47
Beautiful LRC. Very awesome look about it.

I have often wondered about those minis by Scribor, in how they are to clean up with all of the flash and moreso on how they are to paint. You pretty much confirmed my suspections.

Again great work. Love it.

04-08-2006, 02:06
Thanks for letting me know. :) I should also stop being lazy and proactively look for clues and ideas on how to do various kinds of marble - something I think 40k lacks for its gothic aspect.

04-08-2006, 02:59
I LOVE the land raider and the chapter master, but I think the chaplain looks pretty incomplete.

04-08-2006, 04:06
Maybe I've asked this before, but how do you achieve the stubble effect?

06-08-2006, 08:04
Shadow Grey mixed with Dwarf Flesh watered down painted over the stubble area, then a bit of Scorched Brown mixed in for shaded areas, then a bit of Dwarf Flesh mixed in to the original mix to blend the stubble with the skin, up to Dwarf Flesh or even Elf Flesh on its own.

06-08-2006, 08:27
have you ever won anything at golden daemon

06-08-2006, 15:30
Thanks again!

06-08-2006, 20:56
if i blew this up in a game.....i would demand it stayed on the table.
god damn. too good

06-08-2006, 21:13
If you don't enter this in Golden Deamon I WILL find you.

JK, Great model. I love land raiders

07-08-2006, 09:06
I won't enter it into any GD as there's high probability it'll be on the client's shelf until any GD around happens. Anyways, it's not painted to GD standard - I feel it would not place given there are some minor messier areas. Plus it's not converted, and the interior is just bland.

09-08-2006, 09:47
Anyways, it's not painted to GD standard...

I beg to disagree.

09-08-2006, 11:10
Absolutely brilliant!
Highly inspirational as always Hortwerth!

The Inquisitor
09-08-2006, 14:20
beautiful. Could have been asked already, but I have a couple questions: did you freehand the airbrush on all parts or use a mix of AB/brush to build up the patterns? Did you use freehand shielding for the patterns, masking (liquid/frisket/etc.). Would you mind speaking about this?

09-08-2006, 23:12
I know I am late, but I really feel I must congratulate you on such fantastic work. That Land raider is a masterpiece. Respect.

As for the

it's not painted to GD standard

... yeah, right!

11-08-2006, 15:58
Loved it on LJ and I love here!
Awesome work man!
