View Full Version : Warriors of Iron

Recently I decided to do a new army. I wanted something original looking yet I wanted to redo Iron Warriors since my previous attempt was nothing compared to my current standards.

Now your probably asking yourself, how is this going to be original?
Well consider this, it will be a truescale army and it will be full of bionics!

Here is the army's to do list for 1000 points. After that I might consider adding more.

HQ:
Chaos lieutenant.
Chaos Sorceror.

Elites:
5 Possessed with Daemonic Visage.
2 Obliterators.
2 Obliterators.

Troops:
6 Chaos Marines, 4 bolters, 2 plasma guns.
6 Chaos Marines, 5 bolters, 1 autocannon.
6 Chaos Marines, 4 bolt pistols and close combat weapons, 1 heavy bolter, 1 flamer.
6 Chaos Marines, 4 bolt pistols and close combat weapons, 1 heavy bolter, 1 flamer.

This is Bakar Lonmor, one of the heavy bolter marines.

This is Vergis Olverek, your standard bolter wielding Iron warrior (I intend on naming every marine).

Enjoy!

Like what you've done so far, will you be painting them as you go, or converting all first? Interested to see how you'll do the possessed

Bitterman

That is exactly how IW should look like. Well done, canīt wait to see more.

Cheers!

Misread that at first as:

Wow, amazing work so far! I'll be following and closing this thread indeed!

Those bionice look ridiculous (as in very well done), but I don't think every warrior can have them (rules-wise, feel free to model them).

PS I'm surprised you havent taken tanks!

HiredSword.
03-08-2006, 17:05
wow, simply astounding so far, and you've only done 2 marines!

This is just my opinion, but maybe try a slightly different slant on the original IW colour scheme by maybe painting yours in a slightly darker metal. The reason i'm saying this is that the IW scheme is seen as the easiest chaos chapter to paint and models like yours deserve a striking paint job. This is all just my opinion though.

about the possesed- are they going to be mechanic or daemonic? As well as the obliterators, from scratch? From terminators?

Arcane_Blade
03-08-2006, 18:07
I would have thought the possessed will be more mechanical than daemonic, seeing that IW only use Daemons/Powers to power technology. (By the way, amazing work! Keep it up! ;) )

Aquilla
04-08-2006, 10:26
Possessed will be mechanically scary, both them and the lieutenant have daemonic visage that means -2 Ld for the enemy!

Obliterators will be interesting, I purposely bought 2, yet I need 4, that means lots of bionics and GS.

Looking pretty good so far Aquilla. I like the conversion work on both of the CSM's. I particularly like the bionic pincer hand on the CSM armed with the Heavy Bolter, that looks very cool indeed.

Looking forward to seeing some more updates.

An idea which I was gonna use for Iron Warrior possessed back in the day was the Necromunda Pit slave weapon-arms, you considered those? ^_^

KayvaanShrike
05-08-2006, 08:59
Those are the Gun Servitor Heavy Bolter and backpack arent they? They look good on him, well done. What are you working on just now?

Aquilla
05-08-2006, 12:55
@Gaz:
I'm not going to use the pit slave arms, personally I find them too spindly for marines. Also I prefer having bionics that look like they could actually work, pit slave bionics don't look that effective in my opinion.
Then again I could be surprised.

@KayvaanShrike:
I'm currently trying to finish a close combat squad, then I might try my hand at making an obliterator.

i'm just loving the conversions, nothing to complain about.

Sigismundjimbob
06-08-2006, 15:55
Nice conversions! what are you using for the bionic bits? im guessin plasticard rod? also wondering how you plan on keeping track of each models name. i had toyed with the idea of naming each of my orks but with 120 orks i dont think so.
its looking good so far

Aquilla
06-08-2006, 16:54
As for keeping track of names, I'm using this thread until I paint them, then I'll probably paint it under the bases.

Yeah, bionics are just bits of plasticard.

Now it's time to get started on the first of the army's big guns;
An Obliterator.

Now if you remember my first post, I said I wanted an all true-scale army, all of it! even the obliterators!

A normal marine is normally dwarfed by an obliterator, but as Mr. Augren will kindly show, obliterators don't look that menacing anymore when put next to a true-scale marine.

We can't have that now, can we?!

Heres a pic of obliterator Arnyx in his current state.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v503/-Aquilla-/Iron%20Warriors/DSCN0514.jpg

So far I plan on lengthening the legs, then I'll do a dry assembly to see if the arms need lenghtening.

Aquilla
09-08-2006, 12:52
After much repositioning, pinning, super-glueing and green stuffing, here is the new true-scaled obliterator Arnyx.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v503/-Aquilla-/Iron%20Warriors/DSCN0515.jpg
I did this by lenghening the torso and the upper legs. Now I think I might have to do the same with the arms.

The Idea I have for this lad is that he is about to engage an enemy in a firefight, probably marines or some equally armoured threat. To represent this I want him to look like he is in the process of morphing his arm into a suitably large scary weapon, i.e. an autocannon or lascannon.
I'm open to all suggestions.

Looking good. Even by shifting to an upright pose the Oblit looks bigger.

My god its huge!! I like it!!! Looks much better than the normal one.

Good job on all so far.

Sigismundjimbob

That repositioning of the obliterator is nice. looks more like its in between daemon prince and a normal marine now, not just a slightly larger marine

UnRiggable
09-08-2006, 21:36
Don't let the oblit fall off the table! It looks a lot more threatening when put in that position. Did you buy a second just for scale?

Gen_eV
10-08-2006, 03:58
Now that is one beefy-looking obliterator. Very menacing

As for making his weaponry look right, I'd recommend working the arms from scratch with new bits - you've clearly got the GS skills for the torn and stretched flesh, so cut down the original arms then build them up with new guns. Possibly you could have the gun being de-morphed folded back, with the 'new' gun emerging from the centre-line?

Aquilla
12-08-2006, 21:51
Thatsw pretty much what I want to do Gen_eV. I'm currently trying to decide what head I should give him. Both of the obliterators I bought came with what in my opinion has to be the worst out of the three obliterator heads available.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Creep
12-08-2006, 23:16
I would think that using some bits from the inquisitor range (the galactic pit fighting champ and others) would be a cool way to make your possessed and oblits really stand out.

So far this looks awesome...i'll be following this thread for sure.

I think the fantasy chaos warrior heads would look good. Cut the horns off and some of the fleshy oblieratory stuff around the sides to fill gaps, etc. maybe a loyalist teminator helmet, could show off some loyalist roots.

Keep up the good work

Progress report on Arnyx;

After:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v503/-Aquilla-/Iron%20Warriors/DSCN0545.jpg

The body is complete except for the head and the arms are about half built.
Bits used so far are, one obliterator, Abbadon's head, sentinel cap, bike hubcap, space marine chainsword plasticard and obliterator weapons.
I wanted him to look like he was once a terminator so I added the little brace to make the assault cannon look ilke one of the new termie assault cannons.

looking very good, especially liking the inbuilt assault cannon

I finished the obliterator a while ago, so here he is in all his corrupted glory!

The idea is that his daemon-enhanced auto-senses located the ememy in a manufactorum building so he morphed a lascannon and chainfist to make himself a nice entrance before morphing all manner of anti-infantry weaponry to tear them to shreads!

Both marines had to be propped up on coins to bring them to actual base level with the obliterator.

I must say that I am very impressed. Your bionics are nice and I can only imagine they will get better as you get further to completing the army. The obliterator models are really good once you remodel them out of their squatting position, yours is a fine example. I love your isht, keep it up.

15-08-2006, 19:41
I think the fantasy chaos warrior heads would look good.

My oblits have chaos warrior heads, looks very cool even with my extremely limited modelling skills - i.e. just cut with a knife until it fits as I suck with GS.

Those are some seriously scary IWs! Yet again I visit the MP&T forum for inspiration and end up being put off by how much better my stuff could be :P

Aquilla

Thanks for the rating!

Now I have come to a stop because of Arnyx, his base actually. I want it to look like he just crashed through the wall of a manufactorum, hence the cogwheel, pipes and the great lump of broken masonry that he is standing on. The thing is, there is not much else indicating the type of building, so does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could show it's a manufactorum (preferbly through words or a symbol that I could write on the wall)?

Now the obvious choice is an admech symbol or imperial eagle, one of which will be put on anyway.
What I'm looking for is a few words or a sentence that would be commonplace on the walls of a manufactorum.

Wow, looks awesome!

One question:
Why did you decide to include a heavy weapon in both of your CC combat squads? Are they a... "shoot, wait, and pounce" kind of squad?

Aquilla
22-08-2006, 11:56
The idea was the lieutenant would go off scaring people with the possessed with their daemonic visage. The sorceror would join the plasma squad to create a squad that can deal out mass fire at medium to short range (sorcerer has wind of chaos). The rest of the army is based around being as flexible as possible. My last army (Raptors) was full of bolters with a lot of elite troops (almost everything had infiltrate, true grit and counter-attack) that meant a low troop count for a marine army. I got annihalated at range from Tau armies, which are extremely popular in my locality. This time I want to be able to actually damage the tau armies without focusing too much on one tactic.

HiredSword.
22-08-2006, 13:17
the base is looking really good, i'm interested as to why you painted the fine detail of the words first and then the concrete? Great work on the obliterator as well.

Aquilla
22-08-2006, 16:44
The plascrete was done first, then the words and the whole thing was inked so many times with so many colours. That was when I realised mistakes and added blood splatters, finally the bottom was drybrushed black and brown.

Endemion
22-08-2006, 17:06
I must say, if you put nearly as much effort and detail into painting the figs themselves as you have the bases, this is going to be a fantasticlooking army!

Aquilla
24-08-2006, 13:52
The obliterator has had his metal basecoat and second layer of metal.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v503/-Aquilla-/Iron%20Warriors/DSCN05601.jpg
The next step is to bring it up to pure boltgun metal and to highlight it.

I want to make the armour and flesh look fused and as alive as possible. One thing I intend on doing is painting a sort of woodgrain effect onto the armour to make parts look stretched. Tammy Haye did this on the eavy' metal Iron Warriors Daemon Prince conversion. But I still want something more, I'm not quite sure so I'm open to suggestions on how I can really make this warp spawned abomination come alive.

HiredSword.
24-08-2006, 15:54
I have the WD with the description on how the IW daemon prince was painted, if you want i can find it and tell you how some of the effects were done.

Aquilla
24-08-2006, 19:11
Thats okay HiredSword, I actually have it sitting in font of me (under my cat!).

What I'm looking for is like a pattern or something I can paint into the metal to make it look like it can move like flesh. Perhaps something like a molten metal effect or something.

The Judge
24-08-2006, 19:18
I've highlighted metal in the past with white... it would probably work if you added elf flesh or something like that directly into the metal, and worked morte flesh into the mix as the model becomes more fleshy and less metallic.

It's an idea I might try myself....

HiredSword.
24-08-2006, 21:45
I found something which may or may not work on models.

I was dipping my knife into a boiled egg (stay with me on this) and pulled it out and saw that the oil from the egg had created those oil patterns you see on roads.

So why not try using oils on metal paint? I haven't a clue if this works but maybe putting a varnish over it will.

UnRiggable
25-08-2006, 15:07
What color are the daemonic strech things going to be? I'd make them something completely insane, like red or green or maybe even yellow, because metal daemonic possession looks messed up.

Aquilla
25-08-2006, 16:57
The flesh will be just that, flesh.
Athough to make it look raw in places, and daemonic, it will recieve many washes of varying colours such as, flesh wash, brown ink, red ink and liche purple.

I was thinking of how obliterators store many weapons in their body. I might freehand shadows in the shape of weapons on the leg armour (it's the only metal area large enough for a decent bit of freehand).
Opinions anyone?

Aquilla
27-08-2006, 20:21
Anyone, anyone at all?

I was thinking of trying to replicate something from the artwork on page 65 of the chaos codex. If you look closely at the daemon prince's armour, you can see veins, vents and forms beneath the armour. I am going to do my best to replicate this on the open areas of armour on the obliterator as it best fits how I imagined the effects of the obliterator virus.

I think that'd look great, especially when compared to the Inquisitor discription of the oblit virus, they talk alot about seeing the shapes of weapons and ammo and power cords under the skin and armor (once the armor has become one with the infected host of course)

All looking good Aquilla! How can you not love even bigger Oblitterators!

Personally I think servitors would be just perfect for a squad accompanying a Warsmith. Just model the weapons the squad has (if there is one!) onto servitor minis. Built in bolters, CCWs and so forth. Shouldnt be too hard if you like the current minis (which personally I don't, but each to their own. I'm just very picky about my minis :)).

Keep up the good work, good to see this resurected!
