View Full Version : Favorite Guardsman range?

I was curious as to what everyone's favorite Imperial Guard range is, models-wise.

Myself, I'm partial to the Steel Legion, for the fact that they look the most "real" to me. Their lasguns don't look like slug-throwers, their poses seem like natural soldiers on a battlefield, and their gear seems realistic for the mixed tech of 40K. Plus, they scream "sh** and blood is a soldier's life" to me.

Figured I'd see what the Warseer consensus was/is.

Please also note why! If it's background, that works too.

I think the metal Cadians are brilliant, they have a familiar WW2 look to them, plus they have that big chunky lasgun which just looks fabulous. The spindly little plastic Catachan lascarbine and Cadian lasrifle just look like they'll break in half after five minute on the field, the old style lasgun looks like you could really club someone around the head with it and then empty a ammo cell into his squadmates with no trouble.

Steel Leigon. They look cool even though I don't collect Guard, but with a lot of heavy weaponry they could still own!

I own metal Catachans and Praetorians, but my first 4th Ed. IG army will be the Death Korps. The Death Korps image is awesome. Those guys are pimps - death pimps.

I have some old metal mordians and they have to be my favorite Imperial guard regiment. Their background is simply awsome and the way they look is cool. I can only imagine how a well painted force of Iron guard would look when deployed upon the table.

UnRiggable - Yes, some. You have to get them through GW mail order / online store in their classics range and they're expensive per trooper.

---

Too many favorites on that list to easily vote for.

Okay, Catachans are a joke. Hate 'em.

Steel Legion is what I'm basing my force around right now. It's difficult to pass up their heavy bolters that they actually go prone to use.

Vahallans are nice - I have a lot of them.

Elysians would be nice if I were made of money. ;)

I love the old Cadians and I hated the new Cadians at first, but they're growing on me.

Praetorians are that army that I always wanted to collect, but never got around to.

Tallarn is one of those armies I always wanted to collect. I wish GW would redo their heavy weapons so they don't look like a Shriner's convention.

Not big on Vostroyans, but I'm sure I'll develop a fixation on them about the time that GW stops making key parts of their range.

Mine was Praetorians for a long time, though I could only affoard to get 1 unit. :(

Then Steel Legion came out, and I loved them even more, but couldn't shell out of them either. Now I can possibly pay for them slowly, but it's dependant upon 2 things. My local shop actually still having any and me actually still wanting to continue the hobby. :p
What wonderful timing.

Mordian Iron Guard (which I play).

Followed by:
Valhallans,
Steel Legion,
Tallarns,
old Cadian Shock Troops,
Praetorians,
the metal Catachan range (brilliant in comparison to the plastics),
Vostroyans,
Elysians,
the Imperial Football team (new Cadians, how I dislike the helmets....),
the plastic models known as Crapachans.
I wish there were some decent plastic Guard models and I really hoped for a real GW Death Korps release. Those guys would´ve been the perfect choice for the 3rd IG plastics range.

The Vostroyans are pretty cool but the Cadians look about right for an Imperial soldier to me, I like to view the Imperial Guard as being better than our own forces to a degree.

I prefer the Vostroyans for the business of them; they remind me of some of the more silly Army regiments from the HHCCG art and the simple pomposity and anachronistic arrogance of the Imperium in general, presented on a more caricatured level than you even find in the Mordians or Praetorians.

Not that I think the other ranges lack a bit of charm. The Steel Legion are my second favorite, and after that the Valhallans and Cadians, and then the Tallarn (and if you don't believe me there, I've been dreaming about stealing the Tallarn "look" for my DIY Eldar ;) ).

StormCrow
05-08-2006, 06:31
I'm going with the steel legion purely because they are the closest looking to the Death Korps; which is easily the best Imp. Guard regiment....even their horses wear gas masks!

Have to go with the original IG models, even though they are not on the pole, for two reasons.

1) Primacy effect - I had 60+ of those guys before any others were available.

2) I could, and do, slap a heavy weapon on their shoulder. I loathe the heavy weapons mounted on WWI ATG mounts, and the less said about the wheeled, self propelled guns with gunner riding, the better.

Then again this is just personal oppinion, so while all of you are groping after the new stuff, I'll keep an eye on the good stuff.:D

at the moment its the plastic cadians. they may be bigger than a Marine, but theyare great models and very nice to paint.

I really like Alan and Michael Perry's miniatures in general. They make footsloggers from any time or place look good on the tabletop. I like all of their metal IG, and so far I've got Tallarn, Praetorians, Steel Legion and old Cadians. I suppose the Tallarn are my favourites, partly because they're nice to paint.

I've got some plastic Catachans and Cadians as well, but being used to metals, plastic doesn't cut it. Plus, while the Catachans are unpretty, the Cadians are too generic sci-fi to my tastes.
I'm a fan of John Blanche's artwork, so I'm well pleased with the Vostroyans as well. I just can't really see them as part of the IG range. So Tallarn it is.

How are the Elysians not winning this by a country mile?

By far the best IG range.

Because they cost an arm and a leg?

I voted Valhallans, who are my first IG love, but on the whole I like most of the ranges...

If I were to rank them in order I'd probably go...

1) Valhallans

2) Elysians - gorgeous, but just too damn expensive to collect (more expensive than mail ordering metals, even  )

3) Plastic Cadian - they look good, and they're plastic. Yay! :D

4) Death Corps of Kreig - so pretty I might just buy a Kill team of them just for fun...

5) Metal Cadians - When I started collecting Guard I was really torn for some time between these Guys and the Valhallans

6) Steel Legion - Great scuplts but on the whole I'm not a big fan of the style

7) Tallarn - Lovely models, but seem perennially overlooked. I don't think I have actually ever seen a Tallarn army on the table top.

8) Metal Catachans - again, the Vietnam look doesn't really float my boat, but some of the scuplts are really nice

9) Tanith Ghosts - If they had a full range they'd be dead impressive. But they don't.

10) Praetorians - I'm really not into the Dress uniform styles.

11) Mordians - really should be tied witht he Praetorians as the sculpts are all but identical, but if I had to choose between the two then Pith Helmets for the win!

12) Vostroyans - Lovely scuplts, but an ugly, ugly concept. I'm glad that they exist because they cover a differnt style of Guard again, but I would never buy them myself.

13) RT Plastics - Whilst they have a certain old school charm, they simply can't compete in terms of quality with any modern Guard range - except, of course, the...

14) Plastic Catachans - I was never much of fan of the Catachans in the first place, and the plastics are just horrible. Even so, I'm still considering buying some as they are at least Plastic and will be used as the basis of my Cityfight Mortant army....

Gosh, it just occured to me that when the Death Corps are released, there will be eleven distinct Imperial Guard Regiments available (twelve if you treat the metal and plastic Cadians seperately, as they do look quite different form one another and thirteen if you include the RT era plastics)

Steel Legion...far and away the best gaurdsmen out there. They captre the feel of both 40K and IG more than any other in my opinion.

Vostroyans...yeuch!
catachans...funny rambo dudes on steroids
cadians...US/UK 20th century...nice, but a bit bland
praetorians...nice models, and very appealing
tallarn...roughriders are nice
valhallans...yeuch

I voted SL because i collect them and i like overall look (not quality) of them the best. They are however badly done. Models dont match with each other. Parts have different sizes etc. Last but not least more of them should have googles on.

Best in quality (not counting FW stuff which is always the best) at the moment IMO are Vostroyans. They are just very good sculpts.

PS I would vote Death Korps. They are being done by FW so we can assume their quality will be at the highest level. They will most likely contain several different randomised masks and other elements. Their fluff is excellent too.

How can you like the new cadians? They've done three thigns:
1. Wrecked the randomness of imperial guard armies, 4 out of 5 players will use them.
2. They are Patheic compared to the old cadians.
3. They just look wrong! too much armour for 5+ armour save, scouts have about that much armour.

P.S. The old Cadians (Or canadians as i used to call them :)) are the reason i started warhammer.

Okay, on the first point, Guard needed a generic plastic range really badly, it's no surprise that the popularity of Guard saored alongside the release of the Plastic Cadians...

Secondly, that's a matter of opinion. I like the old metal cadians quite a lot, but the new ones are better in several ways, not least in the fineness of detail they can carry.

As for the Carapace/Flak point, well maybe I agree with you on that one a little, but they are clearly less well armoured than Scouts, and moreso than Orks, so it's quite a reasonable representation of Flak armour on the whole...

Heres my two cents on Cadians:

I used to dream with one day affording to buy metal cadians. I thought the old Cadians look more closely to American soldiers in BDU's, that appealed to me. I was hoping the plastic mini's would look the same.

Instead they gave them helmets that look like "special ed" protection helmets...I mean those helmets are soo geeky! They look like old school bicycle helmets which no self respecting kid could wear without getting the crap kicked out of them. The chest plate armour is a nice touch I think....it looks good...its just the helmets I hate. If forgeworld released old school cadian resin heads for the plastic models I would SOOOOO buy them and start cadians.

Oh yeah the huge radio is silly as hell....

That is why I have stuck with my catachans, still relativily cheap compared to metal, lots of converstion options, tough as nails look...the only downside is that its hard to model carapace armour on them. Although catachan models with cadian chests plates make awesome grenadiers....

enough ranting from me...

Look the plastic cadians are 'vanilla' they are to the IG what ultramarines are to SM. and that is how they should be seen.
I also cut my teeth on the metal ones and expended blood, sweat and tears to upgrade them (sorry purists but the old lasrifle sucked like a turbo charged black hole. which is incidently why I have a problem with FW only doing Tallarn heavy weapon teams. the new and old just dont mix! silly mistake people which must have affected sales).
I welcomed the new plastics and still do they are hugely flexible, you can convert them in so many ways and for that alone they deserve their place at the top of this poll (so far).
That being said, in an ideal world (IE one where I'm loaded and can buy that FW city walls and an anphelion base with the contents of my back pocket on a whim and can convince the merry men at GW to do my bidding) I WANT valhallans (with a decent figure of Ciaphas Cain), I WANT death corps, and I so wish I could put a Tanith unit together without the aformentioned blood sweat and tears because those metal (what were they thinking??!?!?!)ones....AAAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!! !!!!!!!!!! they suck worse than the old las gun.
