Welcome to the project log for my Sisters of Battle army. As you may or may not know, the smallest Sisters of Battle force fielded is called a Mission. Though it never specifies exactly how large a Mission is, I figured that a full force org chart ought to do it. The final force will consist of 6 Battle Sister squads in Rhinos, 3 Celestian Squads in Immolators, 30 Seraphim, 3 exorcists, and one canoness. I started a thread on this project before, but it was a) in the wrong forum and b) I took the photos way too close up and all the tiny flaws that were unnoticable to the human eye got picked out really well :cries:

So here I am, starting over. I'm beginning with the vehicles, and yes I know the highlights are very basic and not quite perfect, but I really prefer my stark shadow grey highlights to what they do in the army book, I think it preserves the ominous blackness of the tanks- usually you don't want to have solid surfaces with no play of shadows, but I want my tanks to look so black that light is just absorbed. And on the same token, I want my tanks to have details that are visible without getting up really close... hence my highlighting scheme. But more important than my highlights is the feel of the tanks- I'm going for baroque, ornate, downright gaudy decorations on my vehicles.

They look good althought there is one tiny thing I would like to point out. The banners, on the refutor make sense because they are on the back and they are fluttering in the wind as the vehicle speeds along to deliver its holy squad of scientologis-sisters of battle I mean. On the sanctus anim rhino however the banner on the front should be resting flat against the hull as the wind or whatever force is pushing against the tank as it rumbles forward. Thats just my 2 cents but I look forward to seeing the rest of this blog.

I like how you've built your second dedicated Rhino - I've been using the Immolator top-plate bit and switching over the sister in her gun chair for the sister in her bubble which I've not been overly pleased with.
Nice idea.

Ok, time for an update on the project since i've slipped waay off the first page :p

Working on Exorcist #2 right now and I'm going for something a bit unorthodox- red pipes on the organ. They're painted with red gore, then blood red, then washed with black ink and highlighted again with a blood red drybrush. They look very nice and will have a shiny, lacquered look once I varnish them. I think I will name it Invictus, or invincible. Doesn't hurt to shore up the AV13 with a nice name does it? ;)

After I finish Invictus and then my 3rd exorcist, I will be working on a Saint Celestine conversion into a canoness. Celestine is not really worth it IMO (plus she's from another order and oficially she's dead) but the repentia mistress conversion I did didn't turn out to my satisfaction and I'm very tired of the same old canoness that everyone has, beautiful though she may be.

Btw, can anyone tell me what the check in the box on the rating column of my thread means?

What about the older Cannoness with the Combi-Bolter/Flamer and Praesidia Protectiva? A very nice miniature.

Use Celestine as a living Saint - she's too much for a Cannoness (and I like my WH's *blingy*...)

Ixe
10-08-2006, 17:54
A very nice minature? Yes, indeed...

Excuse me, I just threw up a bit for an unrelated reason :eyebrows:

Not only is she not a great mini, she needs far too much customization to be worthwhile. You can get ok results filing off flamer tanks on peoples' backs, but never great ones. Plus, they don't sell her anymore, at least not in the online store.

I am of course not planning to plunk Celestine down on the table and call her a canoness- I'm not the heretic you think I am! I'm definitely not using her big flapping cloak and will replace it with a more modest Seraphim jump pack. I'll also replace her dove holding arm with a canoness' inferno pistol, and I may replace the Ardent Blade with a regular canoness blessed weapon if it's too flashy, though I don't think it will be. And I also won't use her big shiny halo, i'll probably use that part to mark a regular battle sister as a bolter wielding VSS. As for the scrolls and such that she's standing on, I may snip those off and have her on the ground, though that might not be practical.

As if that weren't enough, I'm planning on draping her with a hooded cloak to represent a cloak of St. Aspira. I agree that Celestine isn't ideal for a conversion because she's very flashy, but there are only two options: One is the Repentia mistress who has cool armor and robes but is short, fat, and stubby. The other is the actual Canoness model which is beautiful but nearly impossible to customize beyond weapons and wargear. Assuming that Celestine flops like the repentia did, I'll probably use either a bolt pistol seraphim (the one with one pistol up and the other forwards) or a heavy weapon girl, probably a heavy flamer since there is no huge tank or ammo case directly attached, she becomes just a fancy lady with a gas mask and no arms once you change the backpack.

for your cannoness, you could use the model of the seraphim sister superior holding her power sword out to one side and the bolt pistol, as in this one-

http://uk.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.uk?do=Individual&code=99060108046&orignav=10

my plan was to use that one, but swap the pistol for a spear and the sword for a brazier.

Hehe I don't mean to hurt your feelings Thousand, I'm just not a big fan of that model ^^ I used to use her back when I started SoB, before the new codex, but I grew tired of the model.

That one's good too, though I prefer the standard Seraphim a bit more since she has a VERY well done face and hair compared to a lot of the others, and I could do more neat things with her like tatoos on her face and maybe a litany scroll bow in her hair :D I made a VSS out of her using a canoness eviscerator, she's posed leaning back and firing as if she's doing a hit-and-run, with fluttering custom purity seals all over her jump pack, it turned out very well  I used the helmet one for another Seraphim VSS, gave her an eviscerator and a scroll which wraps around her bolt pistol and trails down in front of her, also a neat conversion. Both will be up as soon as I get them painted (and get my own camera :()

My canoness is done and O M G. I love how well she turned out, she is a basic Seraphim sister, the one with one pistol pointing forwards and the other up. Her forwards hand was replaced with the canoness inferno pistol, angled slightly gangsta style with a length of chain wrapped around her wrist with a large fleur de lis hanging from it.

Her other arm is a Blessed Weapon arm, but the blade has been replaced with the giant Emperor's Champion sword, which is angled down with its tip touching the ground- it looks huge and heavy, like she has to drag it behind her as she flies around, which is the desired effect ^^ The sword arm also has a litany scroll wrapped around it which flutters across her front.

The thing that really makes the model is the hooded cloak which shades her face and gives her a really mysterious, angelic appearance. I was going for a Heroes of Might and Magic V archangel, and I think I nailed it pretty well... I'm so excited about this model I can't wait to share some pic, I'll be getting a cam soon!

Ok, 2nd exorcist aalmost done. Just need to finish highlights on a small part of it, dullcote, then gloss varnish the trim... Should be up on here in like... a week? :eyebrows:

And I've changed my mind about collected a full mission of Sisters, instead I'm just gonna collect what I want to use for ~2k lists. Right now, the full army is looking like it will be:
Canoness
Inquisitor
3 Death Cult Assassins
Eversor and Callidus Assassins
4 Rhino mounted Battle Sister Squads
2 Seraphim Squads
3 Exorcists

After that (in a year or so when it's done?) I'll look at what comes next, if that means starting a new army or what...

Invictus is here! The flash on the shiny parts really stepped up the shine, it looks less uber shiny IRL. The shot of the back of the tank is meant to show off the writing I did with a micron pen, please be mindful that lots of tiny and invisible flaws make a tank look crappy when captured and blown up in 5 megapixel resolution ^^

You will have to excuse my knowledge of WHs, but whats the diff between an Immolator and the Rhino? And again the diff between those two and the Exorcist? Sorry for being such a noob on that, but I have never played with or against WHs.

Rhino- Storm bolter, carries 10 models.

Immolatior- Carries 6, is equiped with twin linked heavy flamers/melta guns/heavy bolters. More expensive.

Exorcist- Big, nasty, (random no.) missle firing tank. I can only assume the missles come out of the organs(?)

Yes, I have painted one troop model so far (in a non slapdash style anway) and she can be seen earlier in this thread. And yes, missiles come out of the exorcist's organ pipes. And no, it's not indirect fire... That would be the cheesiest thing ever.

Does this look like a noob's army :p I was just listing what will be painted, not eveything that goes into the army at once necessarily.

The organs were inked, it should be fairly easy to tell with the closeup on Invictus where you can see the black in the crevices. Exterminatus also has a coat of chestnut ink, though it's harder to see because of the lighting I think.

I've got my four Veteran Sister Superiors done, the varnish is drying and they just need their shiny bits to get a gloss coat. I've done all my models so far with a gloss varnish undercoat and I'm really happy with the results- it's been kind of wasteful since I've just been painting on GW gloss varnish, but that's a good method for the impatient! Paint-on varnish dries much much quicker than spray-on varieties. I use Testor's Dullcote, a fantastic product, to eliminate the shine afterwards, though it needs to dry overnight.

Coming soon are Sisters Superior Lexis, Vera, Cassandra, and Arianna...

I hate how GW makes tanks like Catholics make cathedrals. Just like IN YOU FACE action. Seriously, a tank is for killing things, it is not an altar. I don't see why there needs to be an organ there.

Ok, here we go, my four Battle Sister Veteran Sister Superiors. They're all armed with bolters, the swords are decorative, and they have Books of St. Lucius, most of them little ones custom sculpted out of green stuff, in case you can't tell from the pics.

My personal favorite is Arianna. Her bolter is not as cool as Lexis', but the laurels and the fluttering litany scrolls on her shoulder make up for it. The other three are all equally great, I can't decide which is my 2nd favorite...

Both Lexis and Arriana have chaos bolters from waay back in the day when I played Iron Warriors. I would have given them modern bolters, but Battlewagon was all out and those were the only ones I had. I think it's cool, anyway, for them to have 10,000 year old bolters from the age of the horus heresy, it makes them minor relics and it makes sense for a VSS to have such a weapon.

Here's a shot of their backs, you can see the Order of Our Martyred Lady emblems on their sleeves, the scroll on Cassandra's back, and the litanies on their robes. The colored stripes on either side of the litany indicate squad- Black is refutor, gold is Sanctus Anim, silver is Ferox Pious, and grey is Puritas. I'm going to put them on the front and back tabards of the other Battle Sisters, but the modeling of these old skool VSS's doesn't lend itself to painting on a litany on the front tabard. I could do it, but I figured that since they have two tabards on their backs that was just as good :p I do all my scrivening, as well as the pupils of my eyes (which are hard to see from the photos) with a .005 micron pen, btw.

Thanks as usual octo ;) The eviscerator is just the one from the canoness sprue, and I hand-painted JUDICO, which is latin for judgment, onto the blade. I would normally have written it with my micron pen so it would be a little neater, but micron ink won't stick if you black-ink the surface first! So, I had to paint over the letters to make them darker.

Yosha! My third exorcist, Mortis, is just about done. This tank is my tank v2.0; I finally figured out how to make vehicle highlights that are neither messy nor mind-numbingly difficult to paint. It was as simple as consulting my "how to paint citadel miniatures bokk," which recommends using a dry brush which is so dry that you have to scrub to get any paint off. As a result, my latest tank looks better than the ones with the extreme, flat highlights, and took a lot less time to finish. I will end up repainting all of my tanks after the rest of the army is painted, mostly because they were done before I learned to undercoat gloss varnish to protect paint. By this point their transfers and details are starting to rub off...

Mortis has "black" organ pipes; they're actually sorta dark bluish grey since they're heavily drybrushed with shadow grey mixes. The details on the exorcist armor plates are done the same way; I know people will proabably not like it and say it's not colorful enough, but that's too bad. I've never seen black pipes, just like I've never seen red pipes, so in the interest of uniqueness naysayers can all eat bolter shells!

You have a poor idea of what "noobishly simple" means I'm afraid. The metal on my infantry models is... [drumbeat]... mithril silver. That's it. No ink, no highlights.

Before you look down your nose at me I play Imperial Guard. The beauty of the Guard isn't in the individual models it's in the " Oh my God your army covers your entire deployment zone! You have more heavy/special weapons than I have models :wtf: "

I do really love your models though. The vehicles especially are beautiful. Games are so much more fun when everyone has fully painted armies.

Well, finally got back into painting after a few weeks of being too tired from skool.

Finally, I have my entire 1850 pt army painted! Of course, a good 70% of the troops are quick-n-dirty painted, so now the task is to strip the paint off the old ones and bring them up to standards. I really want to add an immolator to the force, but I feel like I need to get my basic army painted before I buy more stuff... Right now I'm using a canoness, 4x battle sister rhinos, 2x seraphim and 3x exorcists. I'm really anxious to either swap an exorcist or a seraphim squad for a meltagun dominion squad in dual flamer immolator though, I want to see how it works. But the models in need of new paint call to me, asking "Why have you forsaken us with this crappy paint job?"

Here's an example of a new model vs. an original:

It's almost like looking at a grainy, low quality image next to a high def one, isn't it? But that's an actual photo of one of my old models next to one of my new ones. Quite an improvement, eh? :D

Is the new one the one on the left? Because the one on the right doesn't look half bad......

Ixe

Yes, the new one is on the left :p I recognize that the old models aren't terrible per se, but it's easy to see what's worse about them. The armor and robes are drybrushed, which gives them a messy look, as opposed to the neat and clean highlights on the new models. Also, the metals on all the new models have been hit with inkwashes which gives them a lot more richness and detail. The bases are also improved, and the hair and faces have been done much more carefully. Not to mention the new models have names, which is the best thing ever :D

I bow to your superior dedication to quality. You are truly an example to us all. The new models do look better but there was only something wrong with the old models if you looked at them under bright light close up.

On the tabletop I'm not sure if I would be able to tell the difference bewteen these two models unless I looked really closely. But if you have the time, good on you.

This new one looks alot better. As has been said, it really speaks to your dedication that you are willing to put in this extra effort. With that said, I think the biggest improvement is the new base. Also the name plate is a nice touch. Great job!

they both look good, though the left one does look a bit more polished. If you cant (like me) be bothered to spend ages repainting them, just touch them up a bit andf mix them in with your newer modles. I doubt anyone will complain with a fully painted 1850 point SoB army. And if the do, hurt them...... your army looks great!!!!!!:D

My first totally finished unit: Sister Ava's Seraphim!

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d127/TearSR4/projectlog/avasphim001.jpg

Plus, with this unit done, my entire 1850 tournament army is technically painted!

Next on the list: 7 more seraphim. After that, 28 Battle Sisters and 4 meltagunners. Then, repainting my tanks to the standard I used for Mortis! Finally, I want to get an immolator or two and experiment with dominions and celestians... Long road ahead for that goal :cries:

woah, very nice. Hadn't seen this thread before Ixe! You are an example to us all wit your dedication to get things finished. I am ashamed that I have an entire Smurfs army and 1k of non-SOB witchhunters of which about 15 models are painted (to a fairly low standard). over summer I shall paint them all! I promise...

Many thanks for the compliments.

The bases are made with GaleForce Nine concrete rubble mix. It comes in big pieces, so you have to crush it up a lot. I glob on some white glue, dip it into the crushed rubble, then use a watered down glue mix over the top. It takes several hours to dry after that. Then I prime the model, drybrush the rubble with shadow grey, do a lighter drybrush of fortress grey, and then a very light space wolves grey.

It's not that much of an accomplishment, but I updated all the nameplates to the new style. Many of them are pretty crappy, but I'm not going for a golden daemon here... Just going for tabletop effect, and Sisters are so impressive by themselves, I won best army at my last RTT with an unpainted exorcist in my list  So I'm not gonna sweat it

Sorry bout the bad lighting, didn't bother to set it up well cuz it's just a shot of the new nameplates.

In retrospect, they would be a lot nicer if I hand wrote them with my micron pen, but the messiness lends a bit of a gothic feel, I think... You are free to disagree of course :P

But doesn't it make it so much worse if you are using squads that die a lot? (assassins/imperial guard). If you named them then it makes it that much worse to kill them, so I prefer to keep them faceless (especially guard), so I don't worry about what their families are thinking....

Ixe
14-12-2006, 02:32
Well, nobody in my army has a family. They're all orphans, and they're all celibate...

I personally like being an ass when people kill one or two models, going "nooooo" when they remove an insignificant number of casualties. With names, I can go "Noooo, Sister Chloe!" Just that much more amusing.

Plus, my exorcists seem to draw power from having names. They are MEAN bastards 9/10 games I play.

So I got a 25% off coupon that expired at the end of the month so my plans changed... No more waiting on the immy! It's all assembled and it may be my most crazy tank yet! I crammed the front plate full of 5 decorations, and it definitely looks wacko crazy as intended! No pic, because it's primed black and you wouldn't be able to see much of anything.

oh yay, i always think that SoB tanks should be covered in holy bits- i dont have enough for my liking on my tanks.I cant wait for a glimpse of your new beast.

Whew, I've used this break to repaint all of my tanks! The main reason for it is that I decided that I'm never painting another tank with hard lining-in, so I'm drybrushing my highlights instead. Also, I've learned a lot about protecting transfers using varnish. And finally, all the tanks I painted up until Mortis had no gloss undercoat, so nothing protecting their paint.

Say what you will about Vallejo's paints, their varnishes are trash. Maybe they're just sensitive to the weather, or maybe they just suck. But the gloss varnish left a horrible, uneven finish that looks terrible up close, and the matte varnish was pretty damn shiny. It's Testor's all the way for me from now on - Testor's glosscote and dullcote are great products. The gloss gives you a hard coating that protects your paint, and the dullcote gives you a smooth, even matte finish.

Anyway, I repainted all my transports to have different colored trim to match their squads. It makes the tanks look even more motley and archaic, and it prevents confusion - last game I played, neither me nor my opponent could remember what squad belonged to what tank, it was a big mess... I definitely got lazy doing the repaintings, but at this point I don't care about the little details, I just want my army to be done already! Pics in a few days.

So Ixe, you glosscoat and then dullcoat? I've heard it done before but am always worried about the results. I dullcoat and that comes out fine, but for some reason, combining the two never struck me as a good idea...
I definately need my stuff protected though.
Any help you can give me on this will be much appreciated.

Ixe
07-01-2007, 16:31
The results are more or less fine :p Sometimes, you can see a bit of gloss showing, or odd patterns left by the dullcote, but a 2nd coat usually fixes it completely. So, it looks fine but it's a bit more labor intensive, and it takes longer since you need to wait for each coat to dry before doing the next. Coats usually seem to dry within a few hours, much faster if they're especially light. Though I often let them dry overnight, because it couldn't hurt...

The end result is that you have models with the same smooth finish you get from dullcote, but your paint is protected by the gloss. Dullcote alone provides virtually no protection, which is one of the primary reasons why I decided to redo my tanks.

Ixe you star, you're an inspiration. :D I have 4,000 points of SoB to paint, but I just can't face it because of all the small details, but after looking through your log, I think will get started again this week. Thanks! :)

Squads aren't done, just the VSS's and heavy flamer girls. I just stripped the paint off of my first 4 Battle Sisters - it was a pain in the ass, as some of them have been painted 3 or 4 times... But no pics until I get home to where my camera is.

Thanks, but no... Go to coolminiornot (http://www.coolminiornot.com). The models that earn an 8 or higher have a chance at a golden daemon, though most not a very big one. My painting is at most a 6 on the scale. I not only haven't learned the skills necessary to get there, I also don't have the patience to do real works of art, just functional tabletop minis!

Oh ok i spend a lot of time into one mini to get a descent standard. The problem is golden demon entries have about 100+ hours spent on them!!!

Ooo thanks i will have a look at some of those on Cmon. I never have paid much attention to that site but now i need new ideas for some models i will go there.

Keep up the hard work.

Have you added anything new lately? Maybe a Repressor is in order :D
Lots of nice stuff here, hope you don't mind if i snag a couple of your ideas. Please feel free to leave C&C on my plog. I haven't really added much to it yet, but more will come as the Tale of the 40k Painter continues.

Hopefully you'll have something cool, now that I've given you a reason to update again :p
