View Full Version : Changing fate/faith of Beastmen.

I came across this the other day whilst perusing the rules for IG abhumans:

"One thing to bear in mind when converting Beasts is that they are not 'Beastmen'. The guys with the horns and cloven feet fight for Chaos, and the Imperium tends not to be too tolerant of that sort of thing in its armies."

I know this never used to be the case, however, and the IG had specialist Beastmen regiments and, very rarely, Beastmen Liutenants. When did GW decide that enough was enough and that hooves = Chaos? I can't recall BM even being mentioned in 2nd edition, and I'm not familiar with 3rd.

I understand fluff-wise that BM (in Fantasy at least) are referred to as the Children of Chaos, so it always felt a bit odd to se them wandering around in Imperial regalia; even so, there was something touching about herds squads who were so devoted to fighting for the Emperor even though they were thoroughly reviled by everyone.

I just wondered if anyone had any clue as to exactly what happened?

Beastmen have always been touched by Chaos, but were included in the original lists from the RT era (the same era that had both Harlequins and Marines on Bullock Jetcycles).

Current thinking is that some of them are tollerable, as they representdegenerate brutes suitable for labour rather than full-blown children of Chaos who must be exterminated on sight. Obviously, the most Warped would be the ones most subject to purge (and certainly not recruited for service with the Guard).

As a side note, Beastmen are mentioned in an archive on the Crusade-era Imperial Army, and the Guard are mentioned as having abandoned their use long ago.

Also:
"There are over one million worlds in the Imperium, all of which are inhabited by humans or human descended creatures such as beastmen and squats. The imperial administration may choose to consider these mutations as human or otherwise. In any case, they are all citizens of the Imperium - although citizenship confers no rights, only responsibilities."

My assumption is that this caviat was added mostly to make conversions a bit more interesting and to stop players just sticking catachan arms and guns on beastman models...

Yeah, probably - a shame, though, as I remember what little BM fluff there was in the RT era was quite good....
