Updated 18th/9 moved list and background to start of thread.

After following Deadleys amazing progress from the start, and a few others to boot. I have finally motivated myself into starting this project, that has been a long time coming.

I have wanted to repaint my small IG army for some time, so over the past few months I have been progressively stripping paint off the models and also adding to the collection for this project.

What I have is a collection of Catachan's, almost entirely metal with a few more recent plastic's to expand on units or to add extra bits here and there.

I havent actually played a game of 40k for a few years, mostly due to my working hours, but I find just putting together an army and painting them quite enjoyable.

Here is the army list as such, I've not attached any points to it as it's purpose is to suit the miniatures that I have in the collection as best possible.
As well as trying to be some what legal in a sense

Westralian 10th:

Command Platoon:

Command HQ: SO, 4 Guardsmen(Vox, grenade launcher, bolter, medic) Command Salamander
Sanctioned Psyker
Commisar(powerfist) Priest

Command Squad 1: JO, 4 Guardsmen(Vox, melta, plasma, flamer)

Fire Support Squad 1: 6 Guardsmen(3 heavy bolters)
Fire Support Squad 2: 6 Guardsmen(3 autocannons)
AT Support Squad : 6 Guardsmen (3 lascannons)
Mortar Support Squad: 6 Guardsmen(3 Mortars)
Sniper Support Squad: 6 Guardsmen (3 Snipers)

Stormtrooper Squad: 10 StormTroopers
Dethworld Veteran Assault Squad: 7 Veterans
Ogryn Squad: 5 Ogryn
Ratling Snipers: 10 Ratlings
Techpriest(3 servitors)

Squad 1: 10 Guardsmen (Missile launcher, flamer)
Squad 2: 10 Guardsmen (Missile launcher, flamer)
Squad 3: 10 Guardsmen (missile launcher, plasma)

Armoured Fist Squad: 10 Guardsmen (Missile launcher, melta) Chimera

Fast Attack:

Salamander Scout
Sentinel Squadron 1: 3 Sentinels (Catachan pattern)
Sentinel Squadron 2: 3 Sentinels (Mars/Armageddon pattern)

Heavy Support:

Leman Russ/Conquerer
Leman Russ Exterminator

This leaves a few extra miniatures floating about, as well as a Chimera. I have plans for the Chimera to be transport for either a veteran squad or stormtroper squad, but ill sort that out later when I have fully made up my mind.

Work in progress.
Not painted.

Time for some background on the regiment and where they come from.

"The planet Westralia is located in the galactic east of the galaxy, near the borders of the Tua Empire.
The planet was originally granted as a reward to an Imperial Guard Regiment from the death world of Catachan, the 27th.
The regiment had been part of a larger crusading force that had been conducting campaigns against a number of smaller xenos empires.
The inhabitants of the planet that became known as Westralia where a particularly beligerent and warlike race, resulting in the 27th Catachan's being chosen to facilitate the cleansing of this world. After a spirited but ulitimately futile resistance the xenos where removed from the equation as such.
By this time the 27th had been reduced to less than a third of their founding strength after the many successful years of serving the crusade.
The crusades warmaster granted them the rights to settle the world in the name of the Emperor.
In the centuries that have followed the inhabitants of Westralia have changed very little physically from their Catachan anscestors, given the almost identical gravity found on both worlds. But as Westralia is not even close to being considered a Death world, the inhabitants have also softened up somewhat and become rather more cosmopolitan as compared to your standard Catachan.
They still maintain similar organisation and equipment standards and regimental structures compared to the original regiment, but one thing that has eroded over time is the ability to conduct Jungle warfare training to the level of current Catachan regiments. Westralia as a planet is rather lacking in dense death world type jungles."

So there we have a little bit of history for these guys.

Ok, enough talk time for the obligitory pics to start things rolling.

1: My painting desk, mostly for during the day, i paint at the dining table at night because the light is better.
2,3,4: The collection as it stands, some stuff still need paint stripped from it, but noone said this was going to be finished in a day.

09-08-2006, 18:19
Righto, as the title suggests, this particular regiment are the Westralian 10th.

I have based the colour scheme rather loosely on the Australian Army's Auscam. By loosely I man that it has the same 5 colour palette(or as near as I can get it using GW paint). I tried doing the "hearts and bunnies" design that makes up Auscam, but I just couldnt quite get it to a point that I was happy with, it looked more akin to "dots and splotches". I settled on just using the same colours and placing light inside of dark for the camo pattern.

The colours 5 colours used are Camo green, DA green, snot green, bestial brown and bubonic brown. I am not a big fan of extreme highliting on my miniatures, I prefer to use shading instead with more subtle higlights where I think appropriate.

Nearly all the miniatures will have been convereted in the most minor way. I have removed all skull iconography(apart from where I think it suits the individual model), It just wasnt to my taste with these guys. The double eagles remain so these guys are still imperial.

More pics now,
1: Sgt Harper and his lads, of the 95th Ratling Rifles. This is the full squad finally, the first half have already made a cameo on another thread.
2,3,4: The test models, this team was the first one I painted, after a couple of different patterns this is the final product.

I have 4 others teams, that where also in the test group I should have them up by Friday hopefully.

Comments welcomed :)

09-08-2006, 21:34
What is that in pic #4? Doesn't loo like a basilisk...

09-08-2006, 21:54
It's a basilisk without the big gun shield thing.

10-08-2006, 04:44
Correct Railgunner :)
The basilisk had the gun shield on when I first made it, then it got dropped during a move and the shield and railings on the platform came off.

I liked the look of the gun with out the shield so I will be leaving it off when I redo it.

10-08-2006, 07:04
Photobucket FTW:D
Righto! got the rest of my test models finished early, unfortunately nothings been varnished yet as I have to go buy some dulcoat(sp) next week.
I did these chaps first, as I had just won them off Ebay so they didnt need too much prep work.

Here they are collectively.
Test Group part 1
Test Group part 2

10-08-2006, 07:10
And individually:

Autocannon 1: The loader in this team came with was from the Lascannon set, so I just gs'd a backpack over the lascannon power pack.

Missile launcher 1: Nothing out of the ordinary here, just stock standard.

Missile launcher 2: This team was missing the blast shield and support legs, so I figured it would be an experimental lightweight missile launcher.

Mortar 1: Again straight out of the packet.

10-08-2006, 07:19
Next bunch of guys in the firing line are the Command HQ. This consists of : Senior Officer, 4 guardsmen (bolter, grenade launcher, master vox and lasgun)
Commisar and psyker. Salamander Command vehicle(counts as Chimera with Heavy Flamer).

The guy with the bolter is plastic and I changed the psykers staff by cutting off the big skull and adding the blade from and older plastic powersword.Much to my dismay I discovered nearly all my extra bits had been thrown out in our last house move :cries:

Command HQ

The bosses ride:

Next update will these guys completed, hopefully. Until then comments/crits welcomed.

10-08-2006, 11:59
Cool looking guard mate. Gonna keep an eye on these guys as you progress.

Now just a quick question, what list are you going to run? Im guessing doctrines, but what sort will you be looking at?

10-08-2006, 14:06
Thanks Baneful.

Not sure on the list atm, probly stock standard to start with. With the possibility of writing some deathworld vetran units into it for a bit of a tweek.
It may come down to seeing what models I have at the end of it all and just putting something together that will suit them.

10-08-2006, 17:41
I never thought I would say "Nice Catachans!" but yeah...Im gonna say it.

14-08-2006, 07:39
Thanks for the comment FearFrost.

Ok, I've been away for the weekend so nothing got done till I got home this morning.

May I introduce Commisar Stirling:

Not your standard colour scheme but it fits with the rest of the army.
More tomorrow hopefully.

Comments welcome.

15-08-2006, 17:41
Finished the troopers for the Command HQ, aprt from their bases, will do the whole squads at the same time.

Here they are from the front:
From the back:
Vox trooper and veteran trooper with lasgun:
Grenade launcher and vetran trooper with bolter:

Should have officer and psyker done tomorrow, and their ride by the end of the week.

Comments/critisisms welcome.

16-08-2006, 07:52
Did not quite get as much done today as I wanted, Officer is finished, Psyker is still wip, but should be done tomorrow.

Command HQ Senior Officer: Major Fremantle

Senior Officer with Psyker: Front

And again from rear:

Psyker: Wip

Cheers until next time, all comments appreciated.

19-08-2006, 09:39
Righto, here is the completed Command HQ all together. Next will be their ride.

Command HQ:

More soon.

19-08-2006, 12:45
Looking good mate.

One littlethings ill pick on. The Vox guys teeth arnt done. hey needs somethign there is all. Keep them coming though.

19-08-2006, 13:46
Thanks Baneful.

Teeth! the man has teeth, hmm I'll have a look at that and fix it, unless of course his dentures fell out. Oh and the vetren with the lasgun now has some iris's(sp) so he can see. I'll put a bigger pic of the psyker up tomorrow when the light is better.

19-08-2006, 14:58
Perhaps you could upgrade one of the Veterans to a medic - all it would take would be a backpack wth a red cross on it. That would look cool.

19-08-2006, 16:50
Thanks Getz, hadn't thought of that one. Should have a spare backpack floating about somewhere.

19-08-2006, 19:03
Hmm, nifty. Loving the cammo too.

Have you tried looking here (http://uk.games-workshop.com/imperialguard/catachan%2Drules/1/) for a suitable list?

Dave out.

20-08-2006, 07:04
Thanks Highmarshaldave, I actually have that book. The list I eventually create will have elements from both the standard and deathworld list. purely to accomodate the miniatures I have in my collection.
As promised here is a closer view of the Psyker.

Command HQ Psyker: Cockburn, "Sparky" to the troops. Front and back views.
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l126/bluesabre/Psykerfront2.jpg http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l126/bluesabre/Psykerback2.jpg

Vox guy has found his dentures now :D and a suitable backpack has been found to allow for the selection of a medic.

Command HQ vehicle should be done in the next few days.

26-08-2006, 14:24
Have been back at work for the last week after a 2 week break so progress on these guys has slowed.

Have managed to complete the Command Hq's ride finally.
It's a Salamander Command variant, rules wise it will be counts as a Chimera with Heavy Flamer and Improved Comm's.

So here it is:
Left side.
Rear view.
Right side.
Front view.

Have also been working in a medic for the Command squad, he's just a straight plastic guy with big backpack. I didn't think the backpack would go well on the metal figure he's replacing.
I should be able to post a piccie of him tomorrow.

Comments appreciated as always.

Changed the pic's for some better ones.

26-08-2006, 14:30
Next in line for attention are these guys, they will be No1 squad.
All plastics no metals in this squad, and they will be the only comletely plastic squad in the army all going well.

Some quick shots of what the look like atm. Appologies for the lighting.
Squad 1 part 1:
Squad 1 part 2:

More soon hopefully.

26-08-2006, 15:32
Looks good but I think the inside of the salamander scout could have some more detail with some silver paint, but other wise good, keep painting.

27-08-2006, 00:21
The salamander is looking good, though I agree with Great_Destroyer, maybe a bit or colour in the back compartment. Even just a wash of something would make a world of difference.

27-08-2006, 06:18
Looking nice. I'm really not a catachan fan, but your paint scheme (especially the camo you chose) looks nice. Stick with the metal models as much as possible, they so often have much cooler poses than can be achieved in the plastics!

27-08-2006, 08:24
Thanks for the comments guys. Yes teh rear compartment does look a little bland atm, I am trying not to make them too shiny/reflective to go along with the camo scheme, but I will make a few changes too it and see how they work out.

Here as promised is the medic for the command squad.

Medic front, back:
Have started working in the next squad, should make some progress during the week.

27-08-2006, 11:03
Psyker: Cock burn

You're kidding, right?

27-08-2006, 11:14
Not kidding Sojourner, pronounced "co-burn" a perfectly sensible name.
All the names that I use in this army will have some reference to people in Western Australian history.

Have made some changes to the rear of the Command Salamander as suggested.

Salamander rear deck:

27-08-2006, 23:44
Looks good now mate, that made a difference.

The medic is looking the money also.

28-08-2006, 07:18
Thanks for that Baneful, I shall try and keep up the standard.

28-08-2006, 09:51
:D i like it! its got a lovely, strict, unifying scheme, the flesh looks great, and its so well.. organised! im gobsmacked, its one of the best armies ive seen! i love it man!

28-08-2006, 12:44
Thank's Marko.

I certainly dont want any astartes calling in on me any time soon.

This week may be a bit slow with updates as I'm working day shift, but being an afternoon shift person for the last 15 years it kind of knocks you about.
I'm also afflicted with that deadly disease called WoW.
I have started work on the next squad now though. I hope to put some background story up later in the week.

Thanks all for the c&c.

10-09-2006, 10:00
Hello peoples!

Figured I had better post something to prove that this project isnt going the way of the dinosaurs. Working dayshift the last 3 weeks hasnt helped my painting time.

Here is a wip of #1 squad:
and their missile launcher:

And the next vehicle on the production line is a repaint of my old Hellhound:

10-09-2006, 10:05
continued from above.

A third autocannon team to finish the first fire support squad:

And I picked up these guys from one of my regular haunts during the week, the guy with the book will definately be worked into the regiment structure, the lasgun weilding guy may be added to my very small collection of RT Imperial Guard that I will eventually repaint as well, but things may change yet :)
They both have to be stipped back yet, obviously.

Must appologize for these photos, I wasnt using my camera tripod.

Hopefully my next lot of photos will be the completed #1 squad.

18-09-2006, 15:09
Woot, finally got the first squad based and dull coated.

Here they are:

Sarge and a few of the lads.
The rest of the lads.
Two views of the missile launcher team.

Almost done on the Hellhound as well.

18-09-2006, 17:36
hmm maybe not my cup of tea. but still they look very orignall almsot like cell-shaded graphics it something about it thats cool. Keep at it and you´re going to have a very uniqe style

23-09-2006, 11:46
Finally finished the Hellhound, so here it is:

Next I am going to finish off the last autocannon team for thier fire support squad, have tried a couple of different techniques with the flesh tones to see how they work, something I probably shouldnt have done part way through the project.

Comments appreciated.

23-09-2006, 16:35
The models are looking really good mate, well done. I just have one question; didnt you find the heavy weapon teams parts to be smaller and out of proportion to the plastic catachan parts?

24-09-2006, 05:34
I think the army is coming along great Bluesabre, I have been really impressed with the Camo, both on the infantry and the vehicles. And it is particulary great to see you using FW models to simply represent real models. I like the inclusion of the old style metal Catachans, in my opinion they were some great models, both in their day and now...

Would you mind spilling on how you did the Green Base for the Camo on the Infantry?

24-09-2006, 16:31
Thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated.

@Primarch: I did notice that the hw teams aren't as buff as the standard plastic troopers, but they tend to be overshadowed by the HUGE weapon that they're manning!

@Garrat: I only have 3 FW models, the others are a scout salamander that will be used as is, and a LR Conqueror wich will be the same. The majority of this projects models are actually the old style metals which I think are great. I'm just getting the plastic out of the way first.
The green is not really anything special, black undercoat to start with, 2 coats of watered down catachan green, then at least 2 coats of watered down camo green block painted on try get an even coverage, this turns out a bit darker than the standard camo greenm specially depending on how watered the paint is.

Cheers guys, hope to have more done soon.

26-09-2006, 16:26
Last team of the Autocannon Fire Support Squad is done now. TRied some different techniques with paining the flesh on these guys and the all 3 of the lasscannon teams on my desk atm. Not sure if I'm overly keenon how the gunner has turned out, will see how the next squad goes. Anyhow heres some photos.

Comments on the skin tones welcomed please.

06-10-2006, 07:31
Sorry, pretty slow progress atm, half way through doing 3 Lascannon teams.
Hope to be finished them soon, with some pics.
Also edited progress list at start of thread.

06-10-2006, 12:32
Best rambo-guard I'v ever seen! (inspired me to put together the last 6 or so catachens I had lying around :))

06-10-2006, 13:57
Very nice as an aussie myself i like them a lot. Soon to be in the aussie military YAY!!

06-10-2006, 17:52
dude drybrush the aurtocannon with some lighter brown olor, looks flat to me, otherwies great job.

07-10-2006, 02:15
their clothes look a bit odd, probably because it looks like cel shading.

07-10-2006, 09:27
Cheers for the comments people.

@Ed: Thanks, glad I've inspired someone :)

@yuk: Cool another aussie, what service you joining? Wen you get your first issue of Auscam you can see how much of a pain all those "hearts & bunnies" are too try and paint.

@Unriggable: Highlighting the HW teams weapons is something that I will be looking at while I'm finishing off the Lascannon teams, which shouldnt be too big a problem ass ive only done 3 other teams that really need it.

@Ziljin: Odd is good :) , the way I am doing these guys gives them a distinct look, I considered drybrushing the uniforms but the it just didnt look right with the camo patches.

Once again thanks for the comments, keep em coming ;)

07-10-2006, 17:16
...I considered drybrushing the uniforms but the it just didnt look right with the camo patches.

I've done that with camo too and you are right- it doesn't look good. If you are going to do any highlights then the best thing is to highlight/drybrush the basic colour before you paint the camo pattern on. Otherwise it looks messy and too busy.

19-10-2006, 16:03
Slow as a snail but at least they'e getting there... eventually.
3 Lascannons for show this time. Couple of different backgrounds to try show the end product.

Very lightly drybrushed highlights on these.

As always comments welcomed, and I'll get the crews finished asap.

03-11-2006, 08:37
After much procrastination(sp) here is the AT support squad.

Team 1

Team 2

Team 3

I really need tot get my **** into gear and finish these boys, I have many more projects in the pipeline =(.
Next will be the Armoured Fist Squad.

03-11-2006, 11:45
Wow, good work. I love those old Catachan metals especially the missile loader. Good times *daydreams*

Any chance of a group shot of everything you've done so far?

03-11-2006, 15:16
I can arrange that, will do a group shot tomorrow during the day so I can get some good lighting for them.

Thanks for the comment Luke, I love them too. Hence the army project full of them =)

04-11-2006, 03:53
As requested, here are a couple of group shots of what I have done so far in this little project.

View 1

View 2

Comments/crits always welcome.

04-11-2006, 06:03
you have a nice army, man. keep continuing...

04-11-2006, 10:32
Thanks Tancrede.

Just to finish off todays effort, here are my current wip's for this project.
The armoured fist squad, the first actual catachans I ever purchased way back when...

Squad wip, (minus one, managed to cut him out of the pic with out realising.)

Their Chimera.

04-11-2006, 12:32
Nice work. All your stuff is very 'nam in my opinion. Brown kit is quite retro.

Not kidding Sojourner, pronounced "co-burn" a perfectly sensible name.
All the names that I use in this army will have some reference to people in Western Australian history.

Heh, yeah, I know. It just seemed too coincidental; made me wonder where he was shooting those lightning bolts from...

11-11-2006, 06:31
WOOT 100 posts :D hehe!

Anyhow back to business.

@ Sojurner: I see your point in regards to "nam", the uniforms or lack there of. I think if I was going to base them truely on that time period I would have done the uniforms and vehicles entirely cat green.
As it is the colours are based loosely on the present day Australian armed forces.

Todays pics are of the Armoured Fist's squad Sgt.

Have changed the way the unifroms are being painted so its a tad quicker with the same results.

CC always welcome
Until next time.

11-11-2006, 14:49
Pretty sweet, I really like the stuff on the bases. Just out of curiosity, is a salamander fast attack?

12-11-2006, 16:45
Salamander is FA in the Armoured Co list. So I would use them in the same manner, except the one I've done so far is a counts as Chimera with heavy flamer, for my command HQ.
The other one I have will be done as a scout version.

30-11-2006, 10:45
And finally here they are!
The Armoured Fist Squad is now finished!!! YAY!!

Without further time wasting here are the pics...

Chimera view 1.
Chimera view 2.
Sgt, missile team and troopers.
Melta and troopers.

Next to be done is the Infantry Platoon Command squad, 3 snipers, LR Conquerer and finish off another infantry squad.

C&C always welcomed.
Until next time.

The boyz
30-11-2006, 11:23
They look very nice Bluesabre. I like the camouflage pattern on the chimera and on the Guardsmen uniform. The skin tone on the Guardsmen looks good too.

30-11-2006, 16:52
Cheers for that The Boyz, I'm very happy myself with the way they are starting to come together now.
It's taken a while but I'm gradually getting my painting skill's back up to a point they where a few years back.

30-11-2006, 18:17
I would like to congratulations on making that metal Catachan melta gunner look good. IMO it is one of the worst models of all time. Back in the day my friends and I had a nickname for it, "Grandma Face":p ...

01-12-2006, 00:55
Why thank ye, I still have a couple more melta guys to do yet =)

01-12-2006, 08:43
Very nice, its good to see the contempory aussie camo scheme pulled off so well. Kudos

01-12-2006, 09:08
Thank you Sheep.

Just wish I had the intestinal fortitude to spend time doing the "hearts & bunnies" on the uniforms.

Cheers all.

12-12-2006, 12:52
Update time again.... a bit quicker than the last one!!!

Finished the Infantry Platoon Command Squad, so here they are:

Lt Forrest.

Commissar Vasse.

The squadies.

Group shot.

Some WiP's next up.

12-12-2006, 12:56
Wows, you have a platoon commander named after me. . . what are the odds. You even got the spelling correct. . .

Nice ary so far mate. I was a tad unconvinced initialy, but its looking good.

Dave out.

12-12-2006, 12:57
And to finish with, what I'm currently working on.

LR Conquerer.

After these guys will be my tech priest and his servitors, a squadron of 3 Catachan pattern Sentinels and another infantry squad.

C&C always welcome, until next time..

12-12-2006, 13:08
@highmarshaldave: dammit I'll have to change that now.... =D
Sorry to disappoint, he's actually named after Sir John Forrest a person of importance in Western Australian history. Vasse is a region in the south of the state named after an early settler family if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the comment.

12-12-2006, 13:10
Kinda figures. . .

Nice Conqueror. What else is being done to it? I think it'd look nifty with the addition of the metal Exterminator crew from the archive range. After all, they're fairly Catachan looking.

Dave out.

12-12-2006, 13:14
Conquerer still needs highlighting on the green and black areas, and other small details need to be done.
I'll add a few extra bits of stoage etc, I have the figure you are suggesting, but he is going on the Exterminator that I have still in its box.

12-12-2006, 14:44
Looking good Bluesabre.

That Lt is one of the only catachan figures that i really like, and you've done a splendid job.

Keep it up.

13-12-2006, 12:14
Conquerer is finished now.... so here are some piccies for you to look at and comment upon if the desire takes you so!

Four views.

not done yet...

13-12-2006, 12:15
Last one :D

Very happy with they way it turned out.

Back soon with more....... hopefully.

13-12-2006, 13:06
Don't forget to drill out the Exhaust pipes... ;)

13-12-2006, 13:15
That truely had never occurred to me.
Thank you for that suggestion.

17-12-2006, 13:49
Sniper time....

Finished them today finally.

Here's the first guy.

17-12-2006, 13:50
Sniper #2.

17-12-2006, 13:52
And #3 to finish with.

Next on the work bench is Techpriest O'Connor and his 3 servitors.

C&C always appreciated.

19-12-2006, 13:33
Would like some opinions/suggestions/critisims please.

I played around with a couple of guns today trying to put together a hellgun and shot gun for my stormtroopers and veterans respectively.

First is the hellgun:
Not to sure about this one atm.

And the shotgun:
This is meant to represent a autiloader shotgun, the spent shells are ejected downwards through the loading appeture. I'm happy with this one.

Thanks for any comments in advance.

19-12-2006, 13:58
You should be. They look good.

Shotgun is nice; straighen the barrels out (duh), but its a good concept. As for the hellgun, it looks too "lasgun with a scope". Try going for something more like this (http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/oicw-003.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/oicw.htm&h=529&w=800&sz=47&tbnid=gs4wLfqyhTbOZM:&tbnh=95&tbnw=143&prev=/images%3Fq%3Doicw&start=1&sa=X&oi=images&ct=image&cd=1). It'll look sufficiently "non-lasgun", and make the models easier to tell apart. S'what I'm going for on my Elysian stormies, and it looks rather nifty too.

Dave out.

19-12-2006, 17:30
Thank you gents, the shotgun will be kept as is but with straightened barrels =)
The way I see the hellgun is that its basically a heavy barreled version of the standard lasgun, hence the single barrel on this one, and with an enlarged scope to depict the targeter in the rules.
I will butcher it a bit more and see what happens.

@ highmarshaldave: that personal weapon system is a bit beyond my ability me thinks.

19-12-2006, 17:35
Nonsense! Use a Cadian lasgun and green stuff the top of the furniture back in line with the end of the stock, and also downwards level with the lasgun cell. then put a thin bit of plastic rod about 3-4 mm long towars the bottom (as a lasgun barrel) and a wider, slightly shorter, one above it. Keep the skope as is. I'd do it myself and show you, if it weren't for the fact that all my 40K is 25 mile away from me the now. Ach well. . .

Dave out.

19-12-2006, 20:14
God the OCIW was an ugly beast, glad it was canned.

Good start on the hellgun/shotgun. Just remember to have a hose running from the gun to the backpack, sterotypically hellgun thing to do.

20-12-2006, 09:12
I got the double meaning with Tech-priest O'Conner being a reluctant ex Perth boy myself, good on you for remembering your Australian history and I can't wait to see how he turns out.

20-12-2006, 13:19
@ sheep: no hose on these hellguns, they will be using a high capacity power cell. Besides a bloody great hose hanging off your rifle is a sure way to get snagged on detritus laying about the battlefield.

10-01-2007, 08:37
Now that the busy xmas/new year period is over I can get back to making some progress with this little project.

Just finished is Techpriest O'Connor, who in his own considered opinion believes that if his beloved tanks can wear pretty colours to battle so can he!
This is of much relief to Major Fremantle, as he is of the belief that people running around in shiny suits on a battle field attract far too much fire ( and he'd like his engineer alive to keep his tanks running thank you very much!)

Techpriest O'Connor: front and back

His helping hands... wip:
These guys will also be used with my marines when need be.

10-01-2007, 08:40
Couple wip's of the next infantry squad:

Now a query, has anyone matched up Catachan legs and Cadian torso's before, I'm curious to see the end result as both peices have a belt around the middle and I'm not sure weather to cut it off or not?

Comments always welcome.

10-01-2007, 08:46
I have, unfortunatly no pics, but you need o remove one of the belts, the easiest is the cadian, then glue. looks pretty good.

The rest of the stuff is looking great, nice techpriest, and justification for his cams. I really like you skin tones esp on the sarge in the WIP pics.

10-01-2007, 08:54
Thanks Sheep, the skin tones keep changing each time I paint a squad and find something new that I like.

12-01-2007, 07:08
The humble servitors are now complete.... most benificent one!

Bassie now has it's first coats of paint as well.

12-01-2007, 07:58
happy too see you again, and to see new minis from you.
nice skin tone on the catachan sergent!

14-01-2007, 16:01
Thanks Tancrede, will have the squad done soonish.....

After some comments please, have version 2 of the hellgun for the storm troopers now:
Like the first version the idea is that these guys use a high capacity power cell instead of the bulky pack mounted power packs. Gives them more freedom of movement along with the carbine sized weapon.

And secondly what my stormtroopers will expect to look like, not the most brain straining of conversions but it suits my needs. This is the sgt:
I will do the rest after I order some more bits that I need, mainly the bolter scopes.

Cheers until next time.

20-01-2007, 13:18
BLEH!! being sick on annual leave kinda cuts into your painting time....

Now I'm all healthy again I have managed to complete Squad #3

Here they are with out their missile team(those guys where part of the test batch at the start of the project).

I will post another tomorrow of the whole squad.

Next I think I'd better finish the bassie and get the first sentinel sqdn up and running.

Cheers till then!

20-01-2007, 13:34
Great painting, and i love the old catachan models, use them alot myself.

20-01-2007, 16:18
Those guys are BURL! I love what you've done with the catachan metals. It's nice seeing a techpriest in something besides red too, and with a decent justification to boot!

-peace out

20-01-2007, 17:22
Thanks for the comments gentlemen.

Woot my little thread just reached 100!

Yay !

21-01-2007, 03:15
Any way to answer your questions from many a page ago, im joining the RAAF as a Aircraft techi, although i busted my ligament in ym foot at my fitness test so im sidelined for a while.
Love your work inspired me to dig out the old catachans and salvage what i can for a new project. I dont know if you noticed but the lascannons look similar in shape to the 25 pounders used by us in the second world war, must be the square gunshield, if your interested we used cut down version without shields and shorter barrels in new guinea i was planning on making a few for my gaurd. Cant tell i just came back from the war memorial.

21-01-2007, 07:52
Thanks the_yuk.
Hadn't noticed the resemblance, the split trails doesnt help in that regard.
I have heard of the cut down 25's but wher or when I cant remember.

Well I figured instead of posting another pic of the squad I just finished, I'd do a whole army progress shot.
And here they are:

Also, wip of the bassie. I had hoped to finish him today but I have a supervisors application I really need to finish so I guess that wins out..

Comments always welcomed.

Till next time.

21-01-2007, 10:24
Just remembered that the 17 pdrs used split trails later in the war, duont know if we used them but being an anti tank weapon its a perfect stand in.

21-01-2007, 14:29
No, I dont think we ever used 17's, but when they first where introduced the gun was mounted on a 25's chassis due to the dedicated one for the 17 not being ready yet.

21-01-2007, 16:10
Nice and clean guardsmen, I really like how you've painted the skin.

08-02-2007, 10:13
Finally! after much time wasting and fiddling with other miniatures I've managed to complete the Bassie!
And here she is.

Right side:
Left side:

As always comments are appreciated.

Next to finish is a squadron of Catachan pattern Sentinels, and a start on the ogryn squad.

Cheers till then!

08-02-2007, 10:46
That bassie looks damn fine Bluesabre.

The army is looking excellent. cant wait for the next unit.

08-02-2007, 10:48
Great work mate.

Good to see you making progress on this, wish i could say the same :D

Keep it up.

08-02-2007, 11:26
Thank you gentlemen!
Heh, doesnt matter when you finish Sheep, so long as you do...

Now, just as some idle curiosity on my part I'm expecting someone to ask a specific question about the bassie. Lets see how long it takes =D

08-02-2007, 13:35
Yeah. . . no gunshield? lol.

Nice, makes it look lighter and somehow more jungly. Looks a bit too bright and clean for my tastes (but I play Urban Vets). As for CnC? Camo-netting, weathering and a crewman or two.

Dave out.

08-02-2007, 13:53
Yea, the mech. for moveing the earth shaker should have paint chipped and be very well oilded, not so clean and fresh,
Great stuff other wise.

08-02-2007, 16:22
Thanks again gents.
Gunshield wasnt the question I'm after.... when I originally put he kit together I had it on, but the shield just looks so tall and out of place I had to remove it.
I have the original crew that cam with the kit but they dont fit with the rest of the army, not muscly enough! I do have plans for makeing a couple of gunners tho, but they will be later.
The mech I can probly make more oily, but as i havent added weathering or wear and tear on anyof my vehicles to this point I will be leaving it.
Netting I will look at when Ive done all the vehicles so I dont have to mess around too much and can do it all in one hit.

08-02-2007, 16:36
I really like your army, a real good job. I'd be honoured to play such a foe!

dave is the best
08-02-2007, 17:26
Wow i think these are some of the first catachans i liked.

08-02-2007, 19:02
Very nice Bluesabre. My only gripe is perhaps just a simple coat of boltgun metal for the elevation mechanism on the bassie, but otherwise that is very fine!

-peace out

10-02-2007, 04:43
Have taken note in regards to the elevating mech on the bassie and it has since been painted and oiled appropriately!
Will post new pics when I finish the first sentinel.

10-02-2007, 05:43
Glad to hear about that, I'm looking forward to pics.

-peace out

10-02-2007, 15:42
clean lines, and looking good. My two basilisks have the shield removed as well, looks more realistic

10-02-2007, 17:16
I'll take a stab in the dark . .

Why did you paint the underside of the barrel black? Could be one question, Or which 1/35th scale kit did you get the accessories from?

10-02-2007, 18:10
I was going to ask about the barrel camoflage. Isn't the Top of the barrel supposed to be dark, to make it blend in more with the ground when seen from above, and the bottom of the barrel a much lighter blue/grey/white color to make it blend in with the sky when elevated and seen from the front ground level?

10-02-2007, 18:41
Coming from a Squaddie, he's got it right, side on you need to break up the skylined lines of the barrell, which he's done. From the air, you can't be skylined, so you just need to disrupt the pattern. Only thing I wouln't have done is use black, it doesn't exist in nature, hence why the SAS don't wear black boots, it gives them away. Change it to Scorched brown, and its bang on. Then again, black might exist on their planet, this isn't Terra! ;)

10-02-2007, 18:50
The extras are from two Academy AFV accessories: tank supply kits 1 & 2, on the bassie I have : barrel cleaning rods, crow bar, shovel, crank handle, packs and tent roll, wooden crate and two isreali fuel cans.

As for the barrel, I hadn't really gone in to the theories of what colour goes where, I just liked the look of it so I did it =). I have seen pictures of Sherman Firefly's done the way you suggest Kotobuki.

And as too that question..
I kind of expecting some one to say "why'd you put the dozer blade at the back?".... not really a life altering question but there you go.

Hmm its 345 am time to go to bed I think =)

10-02-2007, 19:20
So why DID you put it on the back?

Lost his forward gears? Or could it be going through jungle with a mother of a barrel sticking out isn't the cleverest way to travel?

11-02-2007, 03:16
The black stays, simply because the scheme is based on ADF vehicles as shown here:

ADF Leopard 1 and trooper in field.
ADF Leopard 1 in field.
ADF Leopard 1 in museum.

As to the dozer blade, I figured that a gun that big needed a recoil spade so it wouldnt topple over backwards each time it fired  the long barrel in jungles could pose problems as well.

As always gentlemen thank you for your comments and input!
Cheerio off to work now.

11-02-2007, 07:32

I thought the dozer blade was obvious so i didn't ask.

I'm wondering when the ADF will change their uniforms/vehicle paint schemes? But if it ain't broke why fix it i suppose.

As long as we don't follow the US, those ACU's are horrible, and only work if you're lying in a gravel pit. MARPAT on the other hand seems to work fine.

11-02-2007, 08:09
I think the ADF's scheme's work well for the environment they where designed for, they also adapt well to other areas with the appropriate colours.
I'm interested to see this scheme on the M1's that the ADF are getting to replace the Leopards, not that I'm a big fan of the M1.

I kinida guess most people reading the forums will know enough about afv's not to ask that question.

11-02-2007, 11:23
Interestingly enough, apparently when they were choosing the colours for "aus-cam" the computer selected all the colours currently in use as well as a really bright pink, of course this was dropped as it was thought it a glitch in the system. however subsequent field test have shown it to be more effective than with the current colour scheme. Of couse this is coming from my ADG mate so I cant verify the truth, even as a raafie I still agree about the M1 not a good choice. Back on topic how much more of this army have you to finish?

11-02-2007, 14:10
Still got a few things left to do yet:

6 sentiels, 1 scout salamander, 1 LR exterminator, 1 chimera, 5 ogryns, 1 inf squad, 1 vet squad, 1 stormtrooper squad, 2 mortar teams, 3 hb teams, 1 preacher, 1 commissar and various assorted spare troopers who can be utilised in speacial weapon squads etc.

11-02-2007, 15:07
hehe, nice looking catachans there mate, but....ok, it's a bit late to ask about this, but in the first page, where you in the first pics showed some models and some boxes, and I saw in pic 4 a leman russ sort, which I have'nt seen before:O
what type is it?

11-02-2007, 16:30
Thanks Farris, that particular LR is the Conquerer variant, you can see it better back on page 4. It's a 2 part Forgeworld kit comprising turrent and gun to replace the standard LR turret.
Which reminds me that I should put the standard turret together so I can swap them with each other.

12-02-2007, 20:37
hmmm....thats a new one, or old:D
you say it's from FW hey?
hmm...never seen it, but I've also haven't been into Forgeworld lately:angel: :cries:

will keep watching:D

12-02-2007, 21:12
How about some ASLAVS if your feeling really conversiony. I plan on making one or two soon to see how i go. Heres the link...http://z11.invisionfree.com/Work_In_Progress/index.php?showtopic=5081&st=0

13-02-2007, 08:26
@ Farris: the LR Conquerer was one of their first kits produced.

I'll just stick to stock standard Chimeras atm thanks Yuk.

Righto! Bassie redone with oily bits!

The first of six Sentinels, 3 will be Catachan pattern, the others.. something else:

Comments welcomed!

the varks
13-02-2007, 10:57
those are some of the best paited catachans iv ever seen, my only criticism is the sentinels toes could have been bent over the rock, but i guess its to late for that now.

13-02-2007, 11:19
We'll just say that he's only just put it there..... =)

13-02-2007, 11:52
It does look as though he's just put it there: in the next second they will adapt to the ground. Good work.

13-02-2007, 12:02
Thank you good sir, I think next time I'll move the camera backa a bit.

13-02-2007, 12:05
Good sir? I'm not Hastings or DeadleyHeadley, nor am I Metal Fingered Villain, old guard or any of those I'd call sirs. I'll take it as a compliment. :)

The Varks is right; that's some of the best Catachans around there is, and those are yours. ;)

22-02-2007, 10:25
Couple of quick wip shots of the next two Sentinels, just to keep things rolling along.

And a frog who's taken up residence in our fishpond!
He shall remain nameless because he's about the 5th frog in the last 3 weeks thats turned up in out yard:wtf: ... so long as the cats dont see him all should be well.

More soon.

C& always welcomed.

22-02-2007, 10:29
Cool modelling on the Frog, your sentinels look like mine were 'after' the puppies got hold of them! ;)

The colour scheme is really coming together, keep it going!

24-02-2007, 05:57

Looking very cool, the only critisism i have is the mold lines on the roll cage, but apart from that, awesome work as usual.

24-02-2007, 07:25
Thanks, I'll remember to get rid of them on the 4 that are yet to be finished.

03-03-2007, 10:47
Yay! Sentinel #3 is now finished. This also heralds the completion of the first Sentinel Squadron.

Pics to prove it.....

I have another three Sentinels to be finished with the rest of this project, they will be done later.

More pics of other stuff to follow below.

I also put together a spare turret for my Leman Russ's, this will allow me too field 2 Leman's of different configurations at any given time. I will be able to select from the standard variant, Conqueror and Exterminator.

Spare Turret.

Next on the painting table are 5 Ogryns, after that will be the rest of my heavy weapons teams.

As always comments and crits gladly accepted.

Till next time.

03-03-2007, 15:45
They look great together as a squad, and the Leman looks awesome as well, now we just need them to replace our Abrams with those and i'll definatley join the A-Cav.

05-03-2007, 12:22
Thanks Sheep.

Quick wip of my first Ogryn:

As always comments welcomed.

Till next time.

05-03-2007, 15:01
Cool Bluesabre! I am excited to see what your gonna do with these Ogryns.

Wait...has anyone ever done a dark skin toned Ogryn? Perhaps a project for you Bluesabre? ;)

-peace out

06-03-2007, 00:48
Hmmm tempting idea Scrubout.
Yes, I think I'll give it a try on one the four remaining lads, now are we talking about negro skin types or just a really sunburnt caucasian look.
Maybe I'll try do one of each.

We'll see how it turns out.

06-03-2007, 08:47
If i remeber rightly, one of the ogryns in the 2nd ed IG codex had black skin.

Looked pretty good too.

Thats a great start, your flesh tones are going from strength to strength.

Arch-Traitor Horus
06-03-2007, 09:01
have rough riders riding kangaroos lol nice to see some aussie ig

09-03-2007, 15:26
Thanks again Sheep.

@ Arch-Traitor: Nice idea, but there are no Rough Riders in this army, I dont think I would be able to do them just with my converting skills.

I have now finished the first Ogryn. I have decided to do four different skin tones through the unit. below is the story behind Ogryns in this regiment.

Ogryns and the Westralian 10th.
Ogryns are not native to the planet Wetralia, but they were discovered soon after control of the system was gained living on a small habitable moon that orbiting a large gas giant in the system. It is presumed that their original ancestors arrived in the system during the dark age of technology and where since forgotten about. The Ogryns as per there race live inrather primitive tribes spread across moon, their skin tones vary considerebly from tribe to tribe depending upon which part of the moon they are collected from.
As for the Westralian 10th, Ogryns where not part of the Regiments original founding strength. It may be that one of the other Westralian Regiments at the same founding "misplaced" them. This is attested to by a conversation overheard between Magor Fremantle, Commissar Stirling and Lt Forrest.

Com S: Lt Forrest!... where did those Ogryns come from?
Lt F: I must report Sir, that these poor fellows seem to have lost their way. I have been trying to help them find it again.
Mgr F: Lost their way? Where are they supposed to be?
Lt F: I dont rightly know Sir! None of the other regiments say they've lost them.
Com S: None? where did you find them?
Lt F: I was talking to some officers of the 11th and they kind of followed me home Sir's....... can we keep them PLEASE!!!!
Mgr F/Comm S: Hmmmmmmm.....
Mgr F: It would rather unproffesional if we didnt put them too good use.
Com S: Though I dont think any amount of camoflage uniform is going to do them any good...
Mgr F: True, better just give them some green cloth so they at least look like us. Good work Lt, just make sure they dont lose their way again.
Lt F: No worries there Sir.
Com S: .... and Lt, before you do anything! get someone to hose the buggers down.

And here are the pic's of thefirst Ogryn.

I'll post more as I finish each one.

Cheers for now.

09-03-2007, 15:47
Look good, and I'm looking foward to the other skin tones!

I've always liked those Ogyrns in a wierd way, I can't stand the old ratlings though.

-peace out

09-03-2007, 15:48
what's wrong with Hobbitsez? ;)

09-03-2007, 16:59
That looks fantastic mate.

What other skin tones are you going to do?

10-03-2007, 06:46
Ogryn 2 is now complete.

The other skin tone I am going to do will be a pale caucasian/asian look, a north african light brown tone and something that will approximate a kind of sunburnt look!

Heres the pics.

Till next time.

10-03-2007, 06:51
Nicely done. :) I don't remember the last time I saw a full squad of Ogryns, if they're all going to look like this it will be a very welcome sight.

Arch-Traitor Horus
10-03-2007, 08:30
can we get a whole army shot?
also how many points is it[dice0]

15-03-2007, 12:35
Just a quick progress report. Still working on the Ogryn's should have #3 done shortly.
I'll post a whole army shot when I finish the Ogryns.

So far points wise, the army comes too 2006 points with more to be added before its finished.

15-03-2007, 12:49
Loving the skin tones on your guys. Have you considered adding a spot of blue for a stubble effect? It'd look particularly fitting on the ogryns.

Sorry to post one of my own ogryns here, but I thought you might like a look at a sunburnt caucasian style skintone, and I think this shows it quite nicely.

El Presedente
15-03-2007, 13:18
I'm likeing that ogryn, How'd you convert that ripper gun?

15-03-2007, 13:24
It's an autocannon with the barrel foreshortened.

As an aside, Bluesabre, have you considered using Nork Deddog's head on those ogryns? It helps de-orkify them, and is a really simple swap.

15-03-2007, 15:55
If I got Nork it would be as a whole model, I cant justify GW's postage costs for a few replacement heads. Besides I like them as they are.
Hadn't thought of the blue wash for stubble, might try it on one of the next ones too see if I like it.

15-03-2007, 19:09
Glad your using my idea...makes me all giddy inside Bluesabre! :D

That dark Ogryn looks especially 'ard, like him a lot.

You should try and pick up that Nork Deddog figure for your Ogryn Commander! He's my personal favorite of those sculpts...

-peace out

16-03-2007, 12:06
He's a lovely model, but dead titchy compared to the others.

20-03-2007, 11:54
Not quite finished yet, but I have wip of #4 & #5 Ogryn for you.

After the Ogryns are done, the remaining heavy weapin teams get the treatment. 3 heavy bolters and 2 mortars.

Overall, not much left to do now, 3 squads of various infantry types, a couple of tanks, 3 sentinels and some odds and end types.
Looking forward to having it all done.

20-03-2007, 13:23
Looking good! :) Those metal Catachans made me rather nostalgic.

20-03-2007, 14:11
God I've got loads of the old metal guys, hence my penal legion! Shame you don't get the poses anymore that we got on those, loads of character!

20-03-2007, 14:54
Dangit Bluesabre, your metal Catachans make me wanna make a small army to use in jungle fighting games.

The Ogryns look great!

-peace out

21-03-2007, 10:17
Thanks guys.

Buy the end of the project, only 2 1/2 squads will actually be plastic with a few extras here and there, the rest of the army is entirely metal.

21-03-2007, 13:05
No the feeling, try carrying 2,000 points of the buggers to a tourny!

I've got spare Catachan, do you need any?

21-03-2007, 17:11
I have pretty much everything I need for the army atm, thank you though.

13-04-2007, 06:25

Looking good, the different skin tones really make the unit look different, well done.

Good work all, very cool.

Updated army shot as promised. Appologies for the blur, my camera tripod is kinda small, so had to take the photo freehand.

15-04-2007, 18:53
Brilliant work on those Ogryns! Can'r say much more than, WOW!

01-05-2007, 17:27
Thanks Jase, Sheep and co.
Time for some more wip shots on the heavy weapon teams.
First are the completed Heavy Bolters and crew:
View 1:
View 2:
I see I need to do a few little touch ups here, thatll happen when I throw them all together with the crews.
The crews:

01-05-2007, 17:31
Now the Mortar teams.

Next after the heavy weapon teams are done are another pair of characters.
Some small conversions have been applied to both of them.

Firstly I have my as yet to be named priest:

And next, a second psyker(again nameless):

Comments and crits alway appreciated.
Till next time!

loving that axe

28-05-2007, 13:08
Appologies for lack of any updates recently, pretty busy with work lately.
Have a query!
I seem to be going through far too many pots of Graveyard Earth lately, and I still have a few tanks too go.

Can any of you wise people out there who have used the foundation paints tell me which one is closest in colour to Graveyard Earth?

Should have the weapons teams done soon enough.

Nice one fellow WAussie! :D

Might I suggest Winthrop for the name of your Priest? ;)

What static grass have you used by the way? Looks rool good! My static grass and application always turns out looking crap. :(

28-05-2007, 18:34
Thanks fellow Perthite:D

The static grass is GW's stuff, just a bit of white glue and dunk it in the stuff... it's all I do.

Winthrop hey? Hmm, I'm trying to have all the characters names linked with something to do with WA. The priest I was thinking of naming after the first Bishop in the colony:angel:
Just havent gotten around to looking up those details yet :(

Scryer in the Darkness
29-05-2007, 18:12
Huh, I have GW's static grass too and it mostly turns out crap for me. :(

I'm not a religious man, and so the first image that popped in my head when I thought about that priest was the grand Winthrop Hall at the University of Western Australia. It was named after Sir John Winthrop Hackett, enthusiastic proponent of establishing the State's first University and it's inaugural Chancellor. Not a great historical figure I know, but the name just seemed to fit. :D

There is also a suburb south of the river called Winthrop. ;)

29-05-2007, 21:51
i really like this army and the scheme bluesabre but i think that you should use plastic catachans with the metal ones on the weapon teams just to give you more variety and individualism. if you already have thn it appears i am going blind and i appologise. i would also suggest making heavier use of regimental doctrines.

05-06-2007, 16:06
Thanks for that bit of info Scryre, failing that I find anything else useful I might just use that.

Welcome to my project justsprouting, the idea behind this project was tou use as little plastic as possible, I much prefer the metal catachans although it does limit me somewhat with poses I'm not to fussed. As for the doctorines, this army isnt designed for any specific gaming purpose it's more for me to have fun painting and being creative, I'll worry about the game side of things when I actually get around to playing one, I havent played in over five years.

Now for some progress. I have finished off all my heavy weapons teams now, so I have a complete heavy bolter squad and and two additional mortars to finish off that squad.

Heavy Bolters view 1:

And one more wip photo in the next post.

Wip of the Priest and Psyker:

Have actually started on their skin tones now, so they shouldnt take too much longer.

Once these guys are done, I will be putting together my Salamander Scout.

Comments and crits always appreciated.

Until next time :D

05-06-2007, 16:12
Nice coating of Green that, very uniform.

05-06-2007, 16:28
Vallego Glaze Madium, very handy stuff when added to paint.

06-06-2007, 05:42
Cool stuff all of it, i like th idea of naming the characters and such after your State, thats a really interesting and novel idea.

The priest and psyker will be great too when they're done i'm sure.

Keep it up

06-06-2007, 06:26
excelent army blue!

aussie aussie aussie oi oi oi!

what models are you going to use to fill out the special weapon squad (snipers)? i found a blister of tanith and thier cloaks fit in quite nicely with the snipers.

just a suggestion :)

keep it up!!!

06-06-2007, 13:35
Thanks for looking guys.

The tanith figures would be ok if they happened to be muscle bound like the catachans:rolleyes: I will probly just use some spare troopers, or gs some capes onto some plastics, will see how it goes as I get closer to finishing.

Have added a few more units to the list at the strat of the thread as well.

Until next time.

11-06-2007, 14:27
Priest and second Psyker are finished.

I present Father Scott:
Named after Thomas Hobbes Scott, the only ordained minister in Perth for the first 2 months after its founding, he was only there because his ship struck a reef on the way home to england.....

And the second Psyker in the army is Collie:
The two psykers are named after regions where there are power stations, Cockburn Sound and Collie.

Next will be the Salamander Scout then some more infantry.
Thanks for looking.

Hot stuff, where's the axe from again? and the priest looks great, the colour scheme really works well.

11-06-2007, 18:07
Your priest and psyker turned out great Bluesabre, I love your work.

I think I like the priest more though. Must be all his cool bling. Haha.

11-06-2007, 18:12
Thanks guys, the axe is from the old marine close combat weapon spruce.

22-06-2007, 15:41
Update time.

Just finished the Salamander Scout today, tried using a Tamiya Wether Master kit it, doesnt really show up on the pictures but it does make a difference to the tracks, but the paint on the hull is very similar in colour to the pigment so it doesn't show too well on those parts if at all. I'll keep trying it and see how it goes in future.

Piccies here:

I will be doing a bulk lot of bandage cam netting when I've finished all the vehicles to save fussing around with it too much, I'll add it to all that need it and reshoot some pics later.

Next on the bench will be the remainder of the 3rd Infantry squad, and an old RT Commisar.

Thanks for looking, commenst and crits always appreciated.

22-06-2007, 15:48
Great stuff as always Muzz, i really like hoe the stowage on the sallie looks like real ALICE packs, or is it just me?

The waethering isn't very strong at all, but pics lie, if it looks good IRL you can't be unhappy.

22-06-2007, 15:59
Thanks Sheep.

It's the first time Ive used any sort of pigment as such so it'll take a little while to get used to it.

Its a pity theres only one set of packs like it on the spruce, looks the part. Who know maybe the designer had ALICE packs in mind, having said that the packs on the catachan hw spruce are similar as well.

22-06-2007, 16:22
I really like the heavy weapon teams Bluesabre. They are really well done and look good as a group.

08-08-2007, 10:42
Hmm, about time for an update I believe.

Have not long finished these guys:
The complete the 3rd squad of my infantry platoon.

This next squad wasnt actually planned to be in the army, but I wanted a way to use as many mini's as possible, so hence a Deathworld Vetran Assault Squad joins the elite choices of this little army.
Wip pics :

More stuff below.

08-08-2007, 10:46
Also started work on two objective markers.

A weapons cache:

And a fuel dump:

I have also now set myself a deadline to finish off this project!
I hope to have it done by the time the Baneblade is released in Oz so I can grab one and finish with a big reward for myself:D

As always commebts appreciated.

08-08-2007, 11:09
Good army fellow Aussie!

25-08-2007, 09:03
Another elite choice down, only one to go in that section now.

Here we have the completed Deathworld Veterans Assault Squad:

Veteran Sgt and speacial weapons:

Troopers and demolition charges:
Trooper on the far right has a different skin tone due to his being painted way back at the start of this project, but then again we all have different skin tones anyway so it doesnt matter.

Second Sentinel squad will be next, with more work on my objective markers as well.

25-08-2007, 09:19
They look great as ever mate, those are definatley the best squad yet.

I'm envious of your goal of finishing the army by oct, i've already folded and ordered 3 Baneblades :D

Still cheaper then FW.

25-08-2007, 09:33
I kie the idea of using the old HW as markers, stolen!

25-08-2007, 09:53
I love you army dude, keep up the good work :D

25-08-2007, 14:39
Thanks guys, I'm very happy the way the last squad turned out as almost tempeted to leave the disruptive pattern off entirely so I didnt spoil the green fatigues.
I think I have a realistic chance of finishing the army as well, all that is left to do are:

LR Executioner
3 Sentinels
Stormtrooper squad
a fourth infantry squad
a third command squad
slightly converted RT era Commisar
objective markers.

Wish me luck!

08-09-2007, 11:02
Some more work to show.

Here we have Lancer Squadron consiting of 2 Mars pattern Sentinels and an Armageddon pattern Sentinel.

These guys are just waiting on some final touch ups before haveing the disruptive pattern applied, they're also waiting on their bases to be finished.

Lancer 1

Lancer 2

Lancer 3

The idea behind the posing is that the squadron has been lying up, waiting for specific instructions, which it has just recieved, and they are just starting to move out.

Might get the objective markers done some time ....:eyebrows:

As always comments appreciated.

10-09-2007, 11:59
Lancer Squadron now officially online!

Lancer 1

Lancer 2

More too follow.

10-09-2007, 12:01
Lancer 3

Now that they're done, next will be a RT era Commissar.

23-09-2007, 11:45
Time for another update.

This time we have a Rt era Commissar figure to start with.

I give you Commissar Campbell, a tough old soldier who was present at the founding of the Westralian 10th. Over the many campaings he a has fought in he has accumulated many injuries, most serious being the loss of his right arm. He has aquired for himself a rather well crafted bionic replacement from Techpriest O'Connor, of course O'connor now believes the two now have some form of kinship due to their mechanical parts.. much to Campbells frustration.

Also some wip Squad #4 and Command Squad 2.

When these are finished, it will just leave the stormtroopers and a LR.

Comments always welcomed..

23-09-2007, 12:59
Wow that commissar is old skool, still looks awesome though, and the SM arm doesn't look too big for him.

Also suprised by how well the plastic HW troppers fit in with the metal models, well done.

23-09-2007, 16:40
Thats him, a tough old bastard who's been around quite a while!!!

Thanks Sheep.

Crazy Ivan
23-09-2007, 23:14
The commissar is looking good, I like the freehand on the pages of the book. The troopers look good too. I really like the sentinels! The converted lascannon sentinel is very nice, I'd like to try that myself! Keep it up, it's nice to see a guard army (almost) finished.

29-09-2007, 07:16
Infantry squad #4 now completed.

Another command squad too follow soon

Cheers Muzz

29-09-2007, 08:17
Very well stuff you got there. But where is that commisar from?

29-09-2007, 20:39
That commissar is from the Rouge Trader Era of WH40k. way back in the 80's.

19-10-2007, 01:36
I really love how you've painted these models. I've never been too fond of Catchans, but somehow yours look really awesome to me.

You're conversions are great as well, the Stormtroops in particular.

19-10-2007, 04:46
Thanks guys, am v happy with what i've managed to achieve with this project.

19-10-2007, 11:43

I also really love those objective markers, very cool!

04-11-2007, 03:56

More too come soonish, after I find time away from work and other householdly duties!

04-11-2007, 05:31
I rarely see Catachan armies, and I rarely see great looking Catachan armies, so this log's been a real treat. As mentioned, you make the Catachan range look better.
