It's small. It's meant to be small. I have themed this army around powerful mages guarded by elite units.

8 levels of magic and 11 dice. At 3 dice per spell that's 4 spells. Not too bad.

Although you will dominate the magic phase you will probably loose the movement phase. I guess that is a trade off you are willing to take.

What about psychology. Will you be able to handle multiple flank charges or other tests?

The first above list faught against a Tzeentch Beasts of Chaos. I lost, but not by much. Some highlights:

1- His Lord failed a charge and was obliterated by my Bolt Throwers
2- Bolt Throwers that killed the Lord took 8/9 wounds from a unit of Dragon Ogres
3- Swordmasters walked from far edge of table to middle slaughtering about four units (they got the charge each time)
4- Commander sucked ass and is going to be dropped (although he killed a Giant)
5- Mages magic was doing great until two miscasts in a row leaving me f*cked.

I am going to post my Combat list below.

First off, very little magic portection. I am going to need help with that without involving point sinks that would kill my potential for combat (this is a combat list). Also, what should be changed in order for me to get another pair of Bolt Throwers?

5 silver helms could be better than 7 and if you take off white lions, you'll get 2 more bolt throwers.

I would drop the SH unit to 6.

Drop the White Lions, and get Eagles. Eagles rule. Arguably the best unit us Asur have at our disposal. I reckon they're better than RBT's by far.

I like your Elf Prince. It's the same combo I normally run for a Prince on foot.

Versatility. Eagles can be used for a variety of purposes - march blocking, taking out war machine crews, harrassment, etc. They are a really wonderful unit.

I agree about ditching the White Lions and getting some Great Eagles.

Yup, I'd ditch the WL.

By the way, can you say how you're going to use this list? Then I might be able to give more info.

And on the eagles, yup. Most versatile unit in the list.

I quit the combat list :(. I am going to remain with my magic force.

I think the list would be stronger droping the swordmasters and picking up dragon princes and more silverhelm or maybe a few chariots.

How well does a single eagle face up against, say, a dwarf cannon crew?

I'm guessing that he took WLs instead of Eagles because he plans on sitting back and setting up a counter-charge. Eagles could only rush across the field and engage units in combat so his mages have fewer targets to cast against.

If I were to build a mage-heavy army the only fast moving units I'd have would be a bunch of Ellyrian Reavers with bows. Half of them run up and shoot, flee from the charge and cause a failed charge, then in my next turn as they're rallying the other half of the Reavers units run up and shoot again. This way you get a lot of good shot while performing a special sort of march-blocking and leaving all of the enemy units open for spellcasting.
