If a charging unit uses its shield while being shot at during standing and shooting, does it mean it must also use the shield in the ensuing combat?

Can it use its Great Weapons instead?

Chronicles 4 states that the choice of weapons is given to the charger in combat but does not mention Stand and Shoot.

I personally think they can switch from shield in S&S to GW in combat.

Thanks in advance for the replies.

if you need some fluff, just imagine the unit throwing down its shields as the enemy comes into chopping range.

Yup, the selection of items for stand and shoot has no relevance to the selection of items for combat.

Otherwise the shooters would be forced to fight close combat with their missile weapons, which is plainly a nonsense.

Yeah, using a pistol on close combat, what nonsense! Or a musket, or a bow! Hahahaha.

Oh wait, this actually happened in real life, and to an extent in game.

In Civ 4 when you attack longbowmen with melee units they start whacking their opponents with their bows. It's rather odd...

Indeed it did happen some times, but does it not seem a little harsh on units like Lothern Sea Guard? Especially since there's absolutely nothing in the rules to suggest that it happens that way.
