View Full Version : Beefpizza+TWS Chaos War Mammoth

07-09-2006, 15:27
My friend Beefpizza will be doing the work on the model, but I'm supplying him with the stuff and we're trying to figure out neat ideas that won't take stupid amounts of time.

The idea is the base a Chaos war mammoth off of the LOTR Mumakil. Beefpizza already has experience with this, making an AWESOME stegadon off of the mumakil model.

So, the ideas that we've run through

1)armour plates on front/back knees, as well as running from the forehead running halfway down the runk(articulated plates)

2)Wodden howdah with elevated area for lord

3)Throne based off of http://store.us.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.us?do=Individual&code=99110108051&orignav=300885&ParentID=252776&GameNav=10&ItemNav=301702

4)Still working on ideas for seated chaos lord. Doomrider legs with grimgor body are the frontrunner

5)tentacles coming out the other tusk spots

6)Fur all over. We're in debate over whether GS or static grass would be better. Anybody have pictures of static grass used as fur?

Here's a sketch.

07-09-2006, 15:37
I can't seem to find the White Dwarf at the moment but there was one where they released the Skaven Clan Moulder army list and they had some pictures of different Skaven beasts in there and one was a tunnel behemoth that was made from an Orc Wyrm with static grass hair, I'm afraid to say it didn't look great.

I would say go for Green stuff, it is really not that hard to do fur (Check my Skaven army diary for pics of my fur, and I am by no means good at GS) and it can be done with something as common as a toothpick if you don't have tools.

07-09-2006, 15:46
Yeah, I agree with Spikedog, don't use static grass for fur - it invariably looks *****!!!!

I have a spare of the Lord on Throne from the War Mammoth if you are interested.

07-09-2006, 16:20
As in the one that comes with the FW mammoth? yes, i'd be very interested. Send me a PM or something.

08-09-2006, 02:49
Definatly stick to sculpting. Static grass is ok if you're really in a hurry on something, but for something like a War Mammoth, you want to take your time and do it right. And if your freind did the Steggie I'm thinking about, then he definatly has the patience and skill to sculpt the fur.

09-09-2006, 15:11
Check with Avian, he's done a converted rhinox using the static grass. Possibly you could use the grass for some parts and the GS for others. It's a chaos mammoth, it's going to be pretty mangy, just look at the FW one.

I think the throne might dominate the howdah a bit much, the WH one is pretty big. Also, I'm unsure as to whether the stone effect it has would work with the wooden howdah.
Are you really going to go with fire shooting from the trunk?:p

Anyway, making a mammoth is the best thing a person can do with their time and having seen that stegodon, I have high expectations. Good luck.:)

22-04-2007, 16:43
Ok, so some progress! I got some free time and the motivation so I have begun!

I'll let the pics talk for them selves:

The white is just earthquake putty to test out ideas. If we decide that this is good then I'll go back with nicer putty and redo it.

22-04-2007, 16:50
To be honest, I think I like the tentacles coming out of the secondary and tertiary tusk holes better than spilling forth from its mouth. That might just be because it was mentioned before the picture... but I'd probably go with that.

22-04-2007, 17:10
Good luck, i would NEVER tackle something that big..Or even soemthing as converting a tank..

Wow, i can't get over how awsome The Mumak's are.. Great models GW... Why can't they have utterly awsome things like this in Warhammer..

The Judge
22-04-2007, 22:57
The tentacles are disturbing.

Go for it more!

22-04-2007, 23:02
Nice tentacles, I'll be following this with interest.

cheers, keep up the good work.

23-04-2007, 09:05
Looks like its trying to vomit up an octopus :D Thats a good thing.

Great start

23-04-2007, 18:59
Aye, great start, I like where this is headed! Converted mumakil FTW!

*looks at Doghouse O_O*

- Salvage

24-04-2007, 09:27
I think I'd prefer the tentacles from the mouth, seems to me that the tentacles from the lower tusks would look a bit odd, wheras the tentacles from the mouth look creepifying.

24-04-2007, 09:44
Looking great so far! Loving the tentacles

I think you should consider giving it another mouth on the side of it's face or something too - Pox has done some crazy stuff on his Chaos Dragon.

24-04-2007, 16:46
Looking good so far.

I have seen the behemoth that spikedog mentioned and yea, it doesn't look to good with static grass fur.

Any chances we could get pics of the stegadon made from a mumakil?

Keep up the good work

11-05-2007, 17:29
Glued the head in place, and started to bulk up the musculature with cheap putty. It will all be covered in fur so I wasn't too careful with it. I also started to think about the long fur on the bottom and how to support it so that's what the pieces of white plasticard are.

11-05-2007, 17:57
Wait what happened to the tentacles?

11-05-2007, 18:11
This looks like it's going to be very interesting. Go for the tentacles but give it an octopus beak in the center of them - that would look great.
Aflo (Adam)

11-05-2007, 19:56
The tentacles were just made out of earthquake putty to test out ideas, but I will make pretty much the same thing out of Milliput so don't worry sir.spamalot :)
We were thinking of having a flamer mouth in the middle of the tentacles, but maybe there could also be an octopus beak around that. Thanks Aflo!

26-05-2007, 19:19
So I got the Lord on Throne in the mail and I was a little disappointed by it. It's pretty tiny. I decided that I would make it more Tzeentchy and gave it a simple feather headdress from the High Elf Plastics. I then decided that his tiny little axe would not do and set out to make myself one. I ended up with an ornate axe/halberd that screams bad-ass! I still need to do GS work on the axe and the lord but enjoy!

26-05-2007, 20:37
That axe certainly is bad-ass, its awesome! Mind telling us the parts? :D

Can we have a comparison shot with the lord and mammoth?

keep up the good work

27-05-2007, 00:56
Nice project - and good progress - keep it up!

27-05-2007, 02:12
I really enjoyed the Stegadon thread so I will be watching this one closely!

I don't know if you are still looking for suggestions for fur, but what about using faux fur or teddy bear fur?

27-05-2007, 19:03
Thank you!

We decided to use Miliput to sculpt the fur as its cheaper for a big roll of the stuff.

I made a quick little diagram showing the parts used. Hope you all use this bad-ass recipe on your Lords too!

27-05-2007, 23:16
That's one hell of an axe! Reminds me of some of the pics in the HoC book. What kind of GS work are you going to do on it?
Also, those wonderful tentacles are all kinds of horrifying.:eyebrows:

28-05-2007, 02:22
Sweet! axe! I really like that axe *gives thumbs up*

cheers, keep up the good work!:)

28-05-2007, 08:24
So glad I had the opportunity to work with Beefpizza on the conceptual work for this, and even happier that I get to own it in the end.

Love the axe Eric. I assume the GS will flush out the bits between the blade and the shaft.

And to those of you wondering what's up with his pointing finger, it was a long and rough transport from the UK(Thank you Hastings), and that, as well as part of the throne back chipped off.

29-05-2007, 01:14
So I busted out the Milliput and experimented with it. Its very different from Green Stuff. It tears easily so doesn't like to be pulled or stretched. The putty is probably best used to block out main shapes because of this with the GS being the detail (although the Milliput does hold detail well).
It also is very stinky and gets all over your hands.
Here is some of the work I did on the fur for the Mammoth. It is going to be built up in layers going up the leg.

29-05-2007, 19:52
nice work so far, good base for GS over the top. where abouts did you get the lord from?

29-05-2007, 22:00
A friend of mine somehow got one solo. He's the lord that's supposed to sit atop the actual Forgeworld chaos mammoth.

29-05-2007, 23:49
Freaking sweet!

Probably been said but don't Gw look disapprovingly on lotr warhammer crossovers?

30-05-2007, 00:20
GW doesn't. New Line Cinemas does, and it won't be a Golden Daemon entry, so I don't care.

sphincter man
24-06-2007, 20:02
wow. im really loving this model's progress.

i'd say that the extra muscles could use some more scratches. they look slightly out of price.

also. where did you get/make this throne and lord from? i really love it.

25-06-2007, 13:57
I think that the extra muscles need to be smoothed out into the existing skin already, and not so much scratches, but "skin wrinkles". The added parts are too smooth.

sphincter man
25-06-2007, 18:46
have you got much more dont on it?

where did you get the lord and throne?

26-06-2007, 00:52
The lord and throne was supplied by me. I had a one time source that managed to have it. It's resin and it's from the FW chaos warmammoth.

26-06-2007, 05:14
May I ask how tall the Mumakil is? Also what is the height difference between the Mumakil and War Mammoth? Thank You in advance

sphincter man
26-06-2007, 17:56
ah. dang. really love that model.

anyway. coming along nicely. keep up the good work!

26-06-2007, 18:04
nice work there beefpizza love the axe, I had the same idea about the mummakil and will propoably give it a go later. good luck with yours

06-07-2007, 04:42
Thank you everyone for the encouraging words.

Sorry for the lack of updates, but this post I have some!

The biggest reason for not working on the Mammoth was the axe. I was doing some GS work on it, and I usually put the GS under a lamp so the heat will cur it faster. The next thing I know is that its all trusted and bubbling, so I grab it out from under (burning my fingers, a small price to pay) and tried to salvage it. It still looks OK now after some bending and filing, but it lost its...edge...literally. I don't want to take pictures of it until its as fixed as I can get it because it would same me...

Anyway, with some encouragement from Phil after my mourning, I started on other stuff again.

Did some fur work on the legs. I think I'm getting the hang of sculpting fur with Miliput much better. You can't really tell in the pictures, but the new fur looks a lot better IMO.

I also started to do some tentacles which will be all around the mouth as a Flamer bursts out.

Here are the pics! Enjoy!

08-08-2007, 20:18
More work done on the fur and I also made some more tentacles.

I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

08-08-2007, 23:20
Cthulu mammoth?...is that you?

08-08-2007, 23:38
Am I childish for inwardly giggling at the genatalia you've given him? Yeh, thought that would be the case :p - looks pretty cool, but will look atleast twice as good when you get those tentacles fixed on.

Aflo (Adam)

10-08-2007, 00:23
Well I made a lot of progress!

First I glued all the tentacles down and the flamer in its mouth. It looks pretty nasty to me:

Then I wanted to work on the Lord. I glued his hand holding the axe and thought about the idea of his throne on top of a stone tablet. I spent a good hour shaping and carving the foam to look like a chaos tinted rock, but after thinking about it, I didn't like how it turned out. I think I might try again but this time use super-sculpy and make it a Tzeentch symbol or something.
Here is the pic anyways to show what I did:

Then I covered up the private parts with fur and finished the long hair on the bottom:

I then thought about more chaos mutations on the mammoth itself and got the idea to use the rest of the flamer to be spawning out of the mammoth's thigh:

Finally I worked some on the howdah:

10-08-2007, 00:50
I was wondering where did you get that Lord?:D Oh. and looking BADASS on the Warmammoth:cool:

10-08-2007, 00:59
If people would read through thd, they'd find that the lord question's been answered several times.

It's the FW lord from the warmammoth.

24-10-2007, 01:16
Did a lot of work on the beast. Probably best to let the pics speak for themselves and if you guys have any questions, I'll answer them.

Here ya go:

24-10-2007, 03:12
I worked on it some more, enjoy!

24-10-2007, 09:32
BeefPizza this is awsome love the tzzenchy mark and the mohawk. the extra eye is the best! keep it up

24-10-2007, 13:35
Awsome stuff, this is going to be very nice once finished. looking forward to the end result.

24-10-2007, 15:24
Wahey! Fantastic to see this thread is still up and running. The Tzeentch symbol and the cyclopean eye have to be my personal favourite touches. Looks great, keep up the good work :)

24-10-2007, 23:41
I wish I could take more credit for this, but I'm mostly just the creative non labor intensive side, and I'll be the one painting it in the end. I'm going to be practicing lots of new techniques and styles on this bad boy.

I'm extremely pleased how the idea of the Tzeentch symbol and the cyclopian eye came out. You can't see too well, but there are metal bands(like the ones on the front) covering his former eyeballs.

Next I think is some more mutations, including a couple more spike patches, then doing all the fur, then most likely the howdah.

25-10-2007, 07:06
I am excited for where this goes!

26-10-2007, 14:12
Thanks everyone!
So I got some more work done, mainly with the Milliput making some more horns and sculpting some fur. I also added another "tattoo" to its rear and a pair of metal bands on the forehead.
I will be gone for a while (Boston) so I won't be able to work on this for a few days.

26-10-2007, 14:33

Woah! Woah! Hold up there just a minute! *double take* Where the hell is that from!?!

26-10-2007, 15:43
Read the other posts. They state several times that this dude is from the actual fw mammoth.

26-10-2007, 15:51
oh right, cheers :p I couldve sworn id read through all the posts... oh well...

Gah! Forgot! That 'Phant is sick!! I think if you can sculpt like that then you MUST be a servant of Tzeentch (I got stuck with khorne)! Love the eye (tis my fave bit)...

26-10-2007, 18:33
This thing is going to be AMAZING.

26-10-2007, 20:34
Wow! WOW! This war elephant is made of so much win it's delicious!

I tip my metaphorical hat to you sir, Tzeentch is proud of your works!

27-10-2007, 01:41
I think Slaanesh is pleased with his work as well, being so artistic.

Love the additional metal bands on the fase and the spikes and molding on the back.

That's probably it for the big spike patches. Let's go and maybe toss in the random spike here and there.

Metal Fingered Villain
28-10-2007, 03:41
I'm really digging the symbol of tzeentch skarred into the skin, the effect is wonderful. The mono eye is cool too with the metal plates in the eye sockets etc... Jolly good.

28-10-2007, 12:29
Oh, forgot to say how brilliant this guy is. Really love the tzeentch marks burned into the skin.

Btw, have you totally given up on the tnbc guys beefpizza?

29-10-2007, 05:04
looks aight, what are you making the howdah out of?

30-10-2007, 04:04
We're not totally set on howdah material yet, but it might be something sturdier than balsa wood, or maybe even carved up popsicle sticks, with plasticard riveting.

Work hasn't commenced on it, but there will most likely be a large ornate Tzeentch banner mounted between the back of the thrown and the back wall of the howdah.

One question that remains is what models/conversions will be mounted in the howdah. The FW rules state that it's a unit of marauders, but I'm thinking that a mix of horrors, chaos warriors, and maybe marauders would work well.

30-10-2007, 04:09
yeah seeing as its tzeentch you should really mix it up, remember these are the guys that the chaos lord picked as his body guards.

30-10-2007, 04:46
I was thinking, if possible, of doing what i've done for my Kaldour knight unit, and using various models from other ranges and converting them to Tzeentch.

I could use the empire guy, the high elf guy, etc. etc. any standing hero type that might be convertible to look tzeentchy.

31-10-2007, 14:30
Outstanding work. Particularly the eye, and the tusks/tentacles/flamers maw. At first (when there were only a few modifications) the changes looked kind of tacked-on, but now it's really coming together wickedly.

01-11-2007, 01:00
Alright everyone, the weekend trip was fun, and now the heavy work period is past, its time for an update!

I'm glad everyone seems to like the Mammoth. I just hope that I can inspire you all to do conversions yourselves.

@ Extension: well, for the time being yes. I have no time to play and little time to convert, so I'd rather just convert things for people who are gonna play games with them, if that makes sense...

I worked on the beast a little, just a batch worth of GS and Milliput.
Also notice in the pics the face on neck, I think its a cool little detail.

01-11-2007, 18:50
Looking good, keep at it, big projects can take such a long time and it's difficult to stay focused...

02-11-2007, 02:10
Yeah, it is hard to keep working on it a little every day.

Today I didn't get any physical work done, but rather thought about the howda since so many were asking about it.
I'd really like to hear what you guys think of the preliminary idea that I made in Photoshop!

02-11-2007, 08:49
Too square, is my first thought.

Make it a bit more natural, and maybe a bit more ramshackle (though probably you were planning that already).
Also, it would be good if it looks like it has been build on top of the animal, not something that's is just glued on it.

But the concept is good, and the rest of the process also!

02-11-2007, 12:56
Tears fill my eyes as i read through the posts and more pictures fills my screen. "Finally, something worth living for!" This conversion is just awesome. those tentacles are the best part, i thing, folowed by the amazing axe. I'm considering building one of my own:P
The eye in its forehead is really cool too, and I think your photoshop'd idea will look good if you'll make it hapen. I'm waiting eagerly for more

And I dont really know this, but most likely my English is terrible. Hope you understand what I'm trying to tell you:D

Keep up the good work!

02-11-2007, 16:41
Hmm... might just be me, but does the howda look kinda too big for the mammoth? Otherwise I like it :D and yes, like the face-neck (neck-face?)... But Flamer on the leg is definately my face bit :D Cant wait to see more progress

04-11-2007, 02:29
With Braad's and Merceus' ideas on the howda (and FurryMiguell's encouragement) I made a lot of changes to the howda. First I shortened it by two planks. I also wanted to have it fit the side of the Mammoth more, so I made a platform that goes does down the side. I considering having a similar platform go down the back of the Mammoth, but I want to finish the other side platform first. Well, I look forward to hearing back from you guys about the changes made and further ideas to implement.

04-11-2007, 03:25
I guess it will still need much work :p
But looking good so far!

04-11-2007, 10:34
ooh  I love it! though I was confused for a moment when I thought the bottlewas part of the howda... but now I know its not, I think it looks really good, and fits the size of the mammoth excellently, well done :D

04-11-2007, 10:45
the mammoth looks amazing, and the howdahs coming on well too. great idea using a mumak.

04-11-2007, 18:58
I think it should be just a half cm wider - the side platform looks too small.

04-11-2007, 22:42
I think it looks cool. But i just wonder. Are you going to glue some chained skulls to the underside of the platform on the side? Or somthing like that. I think it would look cool:)

Or a skeleton, even cooler:D

04-11-2007, 22:49
love the concept
love the execution.

But ...and shoot me if you want,..or since its tzeentch..curse my future ;-)

I think the face in the neck of the beast looks a bit off..
the rest is brilliant, but that thing looks a bit ....off :P.

06-11-2007, 23:54
Eric, Since you're not on AIM, I'll ask here.

What are the top down dimensions of the howdah. I'm just concerned that it'll be extremely crowded in there. The thrown will be elevated so that the character can see over the front howdah wall, correct?

11-11-2007, 14:55
where are the updates? I'm DYING to see more!:(

14-11-2007, 03:11
Update Yay!
I only like to post when I have progress, and progress I have! I finished the actual fire part of the fire mohawk, but I just have to do the ruptured skin around it, which I started today. I worked some more on the tail tentacle, but I don't want to show that yet...I also worked on sculpting the skin around the horns and fur. The second platform on the howda was also finished.

14-11-2007, 07:12
In case people missed it.

14-11-2007, 16:29
Hurray for fluffy! :D though how will the fur and the images on the head/legs work? Will they sort of go into each other, or will the fur cut off somewhere?

15-11-2007, 15:49
The idea behind that is that the fur trails off into the warped/scarred skin, just as hair/fur does on a wounded animal.

I'll be doing paint testing shortly.

Ideas for some pieces

Option 1)Codex Grey undercoat, fortress(lighter than codex right?) drybrush, then light white drybrush.

Option 2)Codex Grey undercoat, 70:30 fortress:warlock purple drybrush, 80:20 white:tentacle pink

Idea is that option 1 is very basic, option 2 is more warped. One idea is to have some portions of the fur(those around mutations) in option 2, and most of the rest in option 1

Metal bands
Metallic blue(reaper blue steel), purple ink wash, with gold/brown ink rivets

liche purple, warlock purple, tentacle pink, bit of white

flamer bodies
storm blue, regal blue, enchanted blue, ice blue, bit of white.

13-12-2007, 21:10
Update Time!

I just finished my school work and am now on my winter break. I won't be able to work on the Mammoth since I can't fly around with it, but that's why I tried my best to do as much as I could these last couple of days.

Basically self explanatory but the most exciting addition is the mutated tail and the tentacle on the left side.

14-12-2007, 00:32
LOVIN" the bigass chains, and the side and tail tentacles.

14-12-2007, 09:48
I'm absolutely loving this thing chaps. My favourite thing is the hair on top of it's head - that really does look like matted hair. I'm not too sure about the fur on the rest of the beast though to be honest because you can see where you have gone around doing rows of indents. It just doesn't look natural IMO (yes I know it's 'Chaos' and so arguably shouldn't look 'natural', but still).

Awesome stuff though keep it up :)

14-12-2007, 16:51
to THE CHIEF: I appreciate your comments. I too felt that the fur had become too patterned. Once I finish all of the fur I'm gonna go back and add places where the fur has gotten longer and shaggier cause right now it looks like he's in long underwear or something.
Oh and the top of his head is supposed to be a fire mane that has erupted from his skin...It may look like really good fur, but it took way to long to replicate across the whole body.
Good to hear that you like the rest that's going on!

14-12-2007, 17:15
wow, i never thought an oliphont could be fluffy, and it is, and it looks great!

14-12-2007, 17:21
Crikey!! That just gets more and more awesome! :D especially love the tail thing, nice one

17-12-2007, 08:21
Love it considering making one myself. quite an original idea, what do you think the color scheme will be? Tzeench is usually so colorful, or is this gonna be quite dulled down. I personally think dull would be better but dont know if that is fluffy enough

15-01-2008, 23:46
I'll be the one painting this, and it won't be dull, let me tell you that.

Expect lots of hues of purple, pink, and blue. Skin will most likely be storm blue to liche purple, to warlock purple, to tentacle pink, to bits of white, or something similar to that.

Tentacles and things will be that same color combo up top w/ various inkings, and storm to regal to enchanted to ice to bits of white.
