Well, after a long break from the hobby, which included a laguage trip to France (the best thing ever) i'v decided to start a new army to satisfiy the cravings.

I'v always had a soft spot for tanks, and seeing and reading alot of books latly made me decide to do a tank based army, but i still love infantry. So the answer was pretty clear. Mech Guard.

It's based around 1st gulf war American but with a little additions of my own. I'v taken a few of my WIP mortants that some of you might have seen and used them, so far i'v started 2 test troops.

WIP Sarg

WIP trooper 2

Basic troops with have FW repirators i ordered last night

I'v had a chimera lying in the box so i built that and grapped and old russ and started to re-paint it, but halfway through my airbrush stuffed up
so i'll get back to that some time later today (i just went out and brought a new compressor :D

The Chimera will have side skirts and a predetor turret

This russ i had lying round so i cleaned it up, and started to paint it, some of the track guards i stole for other tanks so to hide the exposed track i'll use camo netting

Nice! Some day, in 1000 years or so, ima make me a mech guard army, too! =)

Hey - when you were in France, did they teach you how to surrender? :D

lol, but i did see an add for the french army, it said Armee de terra which is army of earth??

The sarges arms look too long! but the paint on the Chimera is good. keep it up

i think it's just the photo, because it's the catachan heavy weapon army straight from the box. My Air compressor arrived so my airbrushing should continue today or tommorow. I think i mentioned i ordered some FW stuff last night, Infantry pack with resperators, Veterans pack and speical weapons.

30-09-2006, 08:40
i liked yor vostroyans and was seriously impressed, but me being a cadian player, this is likely to interest me much further;
FYI i've used FW resps and they look amazing, the casting was nigh on flawless and they llok amazing when painted with decent lenses.
mech guard is a toughy bt i guess the the FW variants will keep you going, are you going to use tank variants?

Still learning
30-09-2006, 10:26
yes, SC i'v seen your guard and was amazed by the lenses. i'll gladly say to you that i saved all the pics of your army in my inspiration folder for reference. dunno about FW varients, i just spent $200 bucks, so i'm seriously out of pocket atm. But on the postive side i have a new compresor and lots to paint. :)

30-09-2006, 19:50
definetely positive side, and nice to know that my work is appreciated!

you ought to be airbrushing like it was a bodily extension

30-09-2006, 19:51
defeinelty positive side, nice to know my work is appreciated, i like that ;)

Well, i got my compressor and went mad with the Airbrush. Bitty it's and old tank i'm working with so i get some old glue marks and stuff, but it still looks really great. Still got abit to go but i got the basic colour i was looking for.

and, after much chopping, cropping, slicing and dicing i present my sentiel. I really enjoy sentinels. Little pests lurking around all alone. This one should play havok with enemy tanks. It's another old model being reused, but hey, i gotta save money somewhere. It will have a few bushes on it to reprent that it's in a nearby oasis

the sand at the bottom of teh tank looks a bit cakey. its as if the plastic started melting.

the sand at the bottom of teh tank looks a bit cakey. its as if the plastic started melting.

it's not sand...:o

something tells me, being a regular on SL's threads, it's filla or plaster or some other substance like that...
it'll look cool when painted.

i'm loving that sentinel, good work on the canopy thing, and all the comms, just looks like a mech genius!

good rust work too, really good!

@schoolcormarant, spot on if it's the part i'm thinking of then it is filla. you know too much

the sand at the bottom of teh tank looks a bit cakey. its as if the plastic started melting.

It looks like caked mud to me. I agree with SC- it will look good when painted. I read an article in Fine Scale Modeller regarding modelling tanks: for debris the fellow used a mixture of MIG (a brand name) pigments, flock, Hudsen and Allen Studio Mud, Tamiya putty (you could use green stuff) with a little H2O. I think you could do a simple version with fine sand (beach sand maybe) a little soil from your back yard, flock and some white glue.

01-10-2006, 19:09
Some nice guard threads going up these days...Those are some cool guard there man and so this should be a cool thread.

02-10-2006, 10:24
to morgrad:

Hey - when you were in France, did they teach you how to surrender?

i don't know of what you're speaking.
our soldiers do their job, wherever they were sent (in afghanistan, for example), and often better than the us soldiers (especially when they're in contact with civilians, as in the balkans or afghanistant too). ;)

and i don't speak of the foreign legion : never retreat, never surrender. remember camerone!

but it's not the place for such a debate.

to still learning:
concerning the tanks, in my opinion, the dirt looks much more as mud than dust. personnally, i use pigments.
the troopers looks good, and i wait to see more.

the muck at the mottom is tamiya light earth spread. I just realised what your talking about. It looks better in real life trust me.

OK, time for an update. I havn't done alot in the last few days because i'm back at school. this tank is taking longer than i though. I'm still waiting for my FW stuff to arrive and on the weekend i'll venture into the city and get myself some infantry. I've started on the bases for my army. There going to be a mix between Brown and Cream. with grass and foliage.

ok. Pics

Have just stumbled across this thread, and I have one question....

What colours did you use for the tanks? Is it brushed on? Sprayed on? Airbrushed? A step-by-step guide would be great!!

03-10-2006, 11:50
lol, but i did see an add for the french army, it said Armee de terra which is army of earth??[sic]

I think it's more accurately 'ground army' as opposed to 'air army' (armee l'air) to refer to the air force. Any French people feel free to correct me here...

Onto your models: I like the rust weathering, but the muck on the tracks is perhaps a little too thick, unless your desert has just had rain. I like the basecoat colour, though.

Still learning
03-10-2006, 12:12
yes, ok i'll start work on the step by step tut. i have a chimera to paint next but basically i used the airrbrush, Desert yellow, then Tamiya desert yellow, back to Desert yellow with a little scorched brown then back to desert yellow. THen mutilple light coats of scorched brown and i really mean light coats. scorched brown was added for rush and dirt.

The Leaman russ was and old model that i reused hence the glue marks on the side.

i think the mud gives the tank abit more life, not just the plain desert armour.

Anybody got any idea what colour to paint the fuel barrel???

03-10-2006, 12:59
i think you have 3 ways to paint the fuel barrel:

- same color as your tank, as it was painted at the same time of the tank.

- dark green (catachan?): military fuel barrel, just out of the stock, so it doesn't receive the desert camo.

- blue, red, white, a combination of colors with some markings: civilian stock, captured by your army or stolen,...

for my own army, i will use the third idea cause it will bring some colors in a full camo army.

03-10-2006, 15:20
I say paint the fuel barrel rusty (from condensation I'm guessing). I saw a very nice Panzer model painted in desert camo and the tank on the back was all rusty- it looked very nice.

03-10-2006, 20:01
I like Tancrede's option Number 3. But then again, how you paint your barrel depends on the fluff and background of your army, so it's really up to you.

The rusted option isn't too bad either.

Beautiful tank, how did you manage the rust effects running down from the bolts in the hull?

-peace out

03-10-2006, 22:22
ahoy there,
i understand your predicament, i am studying A levels and it's really taking time away from my beloved hobby, so you got my sympathy there.

first - IMO paint the barrel desert same as the tank, if you were in the air force, flying low level over the desert and you saw a green 'barrel' moving at tank speed over the dunes, you think "hmmmmm...that's odd....FIRE!" and yor tanks in bits. that's my opinion, we're all entitled ;)

second, have you considered turning the glue lines into weld marks? get a hot needle wrapped in a cloth or something, adn do little lines of marks, there's a guide on GW US site under treadheads chimera.

i love what you're up to, here, there is no end of cadian players but it's nice to get a new angle on 'em.

04-10-2006, 10:01
well well, first i'd like to thank you all for your replies.

@scrubout, the rusty effects on the side of the tank are multiple layers of heavly watered scorched brown painted to the flow of gravity.

For the barrel i think i might paint it the third option or possible the catachan green. It just brings the tank to life abit more. Or course both will be heavly weathered. Just like all things are going to be in the army. Including troops

ok ++ update +++

I'm nearing the completion of my first russ. So i started on my Chimera. this Tank was so fun to paint, i plan on going out tomz and probably buying another along with so troops. I had planned to get my FW packaged yesterday but unfortunaly it was not to be.

So to occupy the time i started more bases.

My Chimera still a WIP.

With the turret thats still to be painted

07-10-2006, 13:03
lookin' sharp there SL

i like the colour scheme, i like the predator turret and like what you've done with the 'boxes' on the chimera hatch. looks brilliant. i acually wanted to do something like that but was worried there's be problems about people being 'can't use that nin gameplay' but i think i will do it on my Kasrkin chimera anyway.
how you going to paint your desert bases?

07-10-2006, 14:38
Are those bases still WIP? I only ask as they don't match the mud on the tanks as they are

07-10-2006, 16:42
I like those bases a lot, I look forward to seeing what goes on them!

-peace out

The tank looks great (and the infantry are coming along nicely ;) ). I'd paint the barrel the same as the rest of the tank. If you chose to paint it another colour then I would suggest boltgun metal (something dark).

09-10-2006, 17:26

and i'v got so many spear parts i felt like playing around with some las guns to have fun .

the one with the white part is a flashlight and will be standard issue on all guard models

15-10-2006, 12:06
i like the flashlight one, would be really cool, what is it made of?
also, in the respirator head pack, are you going to use the guy with the flat hat on? i didn't it wasn't a brilliant sculpt, or wasn't a very good cast or something. but i used one of the cadian special weapons+resps in the squad so it doesn't matter about one head missing.
it's a great set, loads of neat bits for tanks and sentinels too. I don't know if you're interested but here are my painted examples.

oh trust me, there are folk looking at this project all the time, btw nice going on the custom bassie (might have to steal that idea for my mech ig ;))

01-11-2006, 11:23
I like the colour scheme - can't really make out much on the models, which I guess is the point. Very realistic.

ah good to know some ppl care. After my exam i'll do the very best i can to get you guys a good shot. It's based on American middle east camoflague.

The only problem is the camoflague makes then look as thought the models are abit dirty? or not painted to a great standard

01-11-2006, 22:20
i really like the basilisk vindicator thing, if you had some spare IG tracks and a bit of time you could change them just to unify them a bit more. - colour scheme rocks, keep it up mate.

01-11-2006, 22:23
I suppose it does, but that's really the beauty of realism. If you're going for a hyper-realistic scheme, your guys are going to look like splodges of mud because that's what camouflage is. I like it that way. A very light highlight might define the lines a little better.
