This is the BFG fleet I intend to build. Comments/suggestions?

Fleet-Admiral in Emperor Class Battleship (395)
Mars Class Battlecruiser (270)
Mars Class Battlecruiser (270)
Dominator Class Cruiser (190)
Dominator Class Cruiser (190)
Gothic Class Cruiser (180)
Gothic Class Cruiser (180)
Dauntless Class Light Cruiser (110)
Dauntless Class Light Cruiser (110)
3 Sword Class Frigates (105)

The idea is that the Mars form one squad which handles basic support and sort of chill near the Emperor, which also does support/ordnance dumping/60 cm pounding. Each Dominator groups up with a Gothic, which gives me two small cruiser squads each with a Nova cannon, some torpedoes (which, while basically negligible, could prove to be useful as a psychological weapon), and then Firepower 12 batteries and Strength 4 lances to either side. I've used this in games with a friend's fleet that I borrowed, and it works quite nicely (as does the 2 Mars squadron; on their own they're meh, but together they perform beautifully). The Dauntlesses and Swords will group up as well to form a more mobile group; the Swords will use their batteries to knock down shields, and then hopefully the lances from the Dauntlesses will do some damage. Plus, Dauntlesses (while fast and powerful) needs escorts for turrets.

So that's the fleet and my idea for using it. Battles with a smaller, similar fleet have gone well (2 wins so far), but that's no indication of future success. Suggestions? Spam? Tangents? I'm interested to hear what you all have to think about it.

It sounds like a good configuration, scary NCs and effective cruiser coverage. I know that if the Tau fleet Im building came up against it Id be a little worried esp if you are good on the scatter rolls for the NCs.
And as an aspiring Tau admiral I extend the offer for you and your fleet to join the Tau Empire. I am sure you will find it to be for the Greater Good ;-)

i like the Dauntless-Sword complement
i think it is a waste to pair the mars up for defense though. with their longer range guns they should be taking the battle to the enemy rather than hang near the Emperor.

Someone nifty like the eldar could easily outflank you so I'd perhaps consider some more swords, but a strong list otherwise.

The Mars aren't paired for defense, just for guns (and Ld.). They're more effective when focusing fire.

I have worried about the Eldar a little, and should I face them (god forbid =p) I would change the Gothics to, say, Tyrants, and drop the Mars Cruisers for more Swords.

I'm not a big fan of the Gothic and would trader them for Lunars, but otherwise it seems strong enough.

Understandable but I think his purpose in pairing the Gothics and Dominators up is so he has same volume of fire as 4x Lunars but 2x NCs also. Though in the event of Eldar attack it would prolly be advisable to drop the gothics and get more battery centric ships. If all else fails you could just /pray to the Emperor (Even though I can count the instances Ive seen that work on one hand with fingers to spare.)

I'm not a Lunar fan >_< Zhai's got the right idea of why I want the Gothics.

And that is, indeed, my plan should I face Eldar; I'm going to make a lot of these ships with rare earth magnets, if I can, which'll let me interchange them pretty easily.

I find the combination of Dominators and Gothics would be absolutely devastating at close range. With long-range support provided by the Emperor and the Mars Cruisers, these battlegroups will be quite powerful and dangerous to divided ships.

One quick question that I have: would you be using these battlegroups as fast response units, or as aggressive units?

Either, depending on who I was facing. Probably a combo of both, as I want this list to be fairly mobile and fast, not static (plus I want to close to that wonderful 30 cm range =P). Against someone like Chaos, for example, I would move forward quite quickly, because Chaos will always have superior range. It's how they are. At close range I can beat them, though, and they can't outrange Nova Cannons. Against someone like Tyranids, though, I would sit back and shoot for as long as I could to use my superior range to its full advantage.
