This is one of the newest ship conversions I came up with. (I can't help it, I like making new BFG ships) :)

Comments?

Nice work! The conversion hangs together really well - especially like the use of the FW tanker part, although I would probably have used Imp cruiser wings. Rules seem nice and understated - I even agree with the points cost! :)

The names reeks of tau to me, but a good little ship :p

I really like that one, where can I find more of your ships and stuff?

*ahem* I think he might have been interviewed in FIREBASE 1, by a particularly dashing and handsome member of the FB specialist team ;).

He's part of the stuff from your guys? Hmm I seem to have forgotten.

You could always reread it ;)

Thank you for the comments :)

@Shinnentai: I chose the tanker part because a cruiser that ventures out into the unknown parts of the galaxy needs a lot of fuel and supplies (I think the tank was also the starting point of the conversion).

I would have maybe tried to use some cruiser wings, but anybody who plays/collects BFG knows that bits are scarce (I miss GW BFG bits service :cries: ). I just wasn't ready to steal wings off a cruiser so I made some from thick plastic card.

@ArtificerArmour: "the name reeks of tau" ...hmm, what you said gave me an idea. Exploration cruisers work out in deep space, so they probably have contact with some xenos races at one time or another. Maybe this could be a multirace ship like a rogue trader ship?

@malika: Probably not a lot of stuff you didn't see before, but once in a while I add stuff. Feel free to poke around my Photo Bucket (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v625/USABOB/).

Yes, that's the first thing that came to my mind, "Look, a rogue trader, and what a pretty one."

awesome conversion youve just inspired me to dig out my old bfg imperial fleet

I like the plasticard wings much better than imperial ones. My first thought when I looked at it was "Damn! Where'd he pick up those sweet wings?"

Very nice work.

Not sure if I'm a fan of the idea of the Imperium naming an entire class of ships "Independence." That seems like an ideal better suited for modern-day former-colonial nations than one that the Imperium would tolerate. It could work better as the name of that particular ship, especially if led by a renegade captain of some sort.

awesome conversion youve just inspired me to dig out my old bfg imperial fleet What made you bury the fleet in the first place? BFG is an awesome game and doesn't deserve to be shelved. I'm glad you are considering taking another look at it :) .

For the wings, I'm glad you liked them. In the bitless world of BFG you have to work with what you have.

It is an exploration cruiser that acts "independantly" of a main fleet, mapping worlds/other interesting spacial features out on the far edges of the galaxy. It just made sense to me, but if you have any class name suggestions, please post them :) .

It looks a little bit underpriced compared to the official Rogue Trader ship. But I'm a BFG noob, and probably have no clue about correct point costs and what is good or bad. :)

A closer comparison would be the Dauntless class since it shares the same speed, turning, hits and turrets as the Independence class.

Comparing the two using the system I estimate points costs on :

Dauntless weaponry (where 1 = 1wb @30cm with one fire-arc) :
3 lances @ 3each : 9
8 wb @ 1each x 0.75 for opposing fire-arcs : 6
Total : 15

Independence weaponry (where 1 = 1wb @30cm with one fire-arc) :
2 lances @ 3each x 1.2 for 2 extra fire-arcs : 7.2
12 wb @ 1each x 0.75 for opposing fire-arcs : 9
Total : 16.2

So using this system the Independence has 108% of the Dauntless' value in weaponry. It also has an extra shield. By comparing the hits+shields of each ship we see that the Independence can be said to have 114% of the Dauntless' durability. Assuming the value of weaponry and durability of the ships to be roughly equal, we would get 108%+114% /2 x 110pts : 122pts. Add in a few for the support bay and you get 125pts :).

Now that I've bored everyone with that, how about Errant class for an alternative name?

@Shinnentai, Where did you get/find your number system for ship points? Or did you make it yourself? I'd like to take a look at it (collecting point calculations for BFG is a hobby of mine :)).
As for the class name, that one is pretty good if I don't use it on this one I'll use it on another :).

The whole points comparison thing is something I pieced together to help in the Tau CPF development, taking people's suggestions to alter it. Using 1wb=1 is a pretty widespread system known as Weapons Battery Equivalent or WBe. Of course the values of the various weapons are somewhat open to judgement! I use :

WB@30cm=1, x1.25 for 45cm and x1.6 for 60cm
Lance@30cm=3 x1.33 for 45cm and x1.75 for 60cm
Torps=1.5
Launch Bay=3.5/4 (bit contentious this one-esp as 8 launch bays on one ship is worth more than twice 4 launch bays)
Tau Torps=2

I value the second broadside at half price given the difficulties of getting both opposing fire-arcs into action at once. I multiply the weapons system by 1.1 for two fire-arcs and 1.2 for three fire-arcs.

A lot of this is simply picking figures out of the air of course. I don't think that weapons systems with double range should have double value, but just of how much value is getting that first shot in / being able to fire on targets of opportunity worth? Exceptionally difficult to say! Same goes for the fire-arcs.

Still, this gives a decent estimate of points value to modify through play-testing.
