View Full Version : Khrangar's Sons of Guilliman Log

Greetings all,

I have decided to start a project log here on WarSeer. I have done this, like others, for several reasons:

1) I need to finish my army! It's been slowly growing since August of 2005 and hasn't been finished yet.
2) I need inspiration and encouragement to do so.
3) I want to see the army finished so I can actually play with it.

In this log, I will show the progress of the army's remaining unpainted units as well as attempt to create a background for the Sons of Guilliman. So far, I have very little ideas for their background so any help would be greatly appreciated. All I know is that they were founded in M33 during the 11th founding from what I've seen on the internet. Other than that, I have free range on what I want them to be/do.

Here is the painted army as it stands as of mid-August 2006:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/Khrangar/Sons%20of%20Guilliman/army.jpg

Since then, I have created my Chapter Master Acies (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/Khrangar/Chapter%20Master/Chapter1.jpg), a MkIV Chaplain (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/Khrangar/MkI%20Chaplain/Chap011.jpg), and a Heresy-Era Veterans Squad (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/Khrangar/Sons%20of%20Guilliman/unit02.jpg). I still have to build a MkV Captain to replace my old one, a MkVI Command Squad for the Captain, and a FW Venerable Dreadnought w/ Assault Cannon and Dreadnought CCW.

I would like to have everything completed by Christmas so that I can finally start work on the Dwarfs that I bought during the summer but haven't touched because I wanted to finish this army first. Note that my original goal to have this army completed by was August 24, 2006 but for some reason I couldn't seem to get it all finished, and since school started, I haven't touched the army except to build the Heresy-Era models.

If you would like to see all the pictures I have taken for this army visit: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v334/Khrangar/

I hope to have some updates soon,

As a whole, even in this incomplete stage, this army looks awesome. The Chaplain looks great and i can't wait to see him finished. From what I could tell, most of these guys need basing, Bolters and backpacks. Why not just work on that first? It looks like those 3 simple things would give you 4 complete units and what looks like 2 HQs. That's enough to make anyone feel accomplished.

i love that colour scheme, and i painted up a few squads like that. Looking good. Id like to see some more pics of the models even in his stage.

looking forward to seeing more of these, particularly the Maximus veterans

i want to see the veteran squad painted up.

Khrangar
04-10-2006, 02:44
I have a specific order I want to paint them in: Chapter Master, Chaplain + 4 Veterans, Venerable Dreadnought, other 5 Veterans. I figure this will give me enough variation in what I am painting to keep me busy and help me keep my interest in what I am painting.

On that note, I've continued to paint the Chapter Master. I've finished highlighting the armour and have begun work on the gold using Bestial Brown as a basecoat over the grey primer that I used.

I did a bit more work on my Chapter Master. He had his armour highlighted and the first coat of gold done to the trim of his armour.

I will go back and fix up the armour once I've finished the model so that it looks less messy than it does now.

I really like the blue areas!

I think the white could use a bit of a blend between the pure white and shadow grey, but thats just me....maybe a thinned ghostly grey?

"I would like to have everything completed by Christmas so that I can finally start work on the Dwarfs that I bought during the summer but haven't touched because I wanted to finish this army first."

Ha! I'm in the exact predicament, with a Dwarf army sitting in boxes from the summer while I paint my Alpha Legion for Xmas ... you're a tad farther ahead than I am, but I guess you've got school to sap your time and I've just got work :P

Anyway, looking quite good thus far. I followed your vet progress on Dakka, but don't remember seeing the rest of the army all painted and en mass - a shame, cause they look very solid!

Good luck, keep us posted.

Here is the second to final pic of the Chapter Master. The final one will be taken once I figure out how to freehand a good UM symbol.

Here he is:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/Khrangar/Chapter%20Master/CMDONE.jpg

I realize that the eyes may look a little funky but it was the best I could do considering his eyes are tiny.

Should I put his name 'Acies' on the litany part on his leg?

Hey man, I took the liberty of critiquing your black highlights, I hope you dont mind...I have a lot of trouble with black, and have been really trying to work on my technique with it, so I pay a lot of attention to the way people do their highlights.

I think gold for the chestpiece and the shoulder trim :)

Khrangar
10-10-2006, 03:10
Thanks for that FearFrost. As it turns out, the first thing I did after taking these pics was fix those areas which you have circled in pink.

I think I'll do the pad and eagle gold then. Should I do the skull pad gold too or should I do it bone? If I do it gold then I think it may match more with the model but if I do it bone, it looks more natural, or something like that.

Khrangar

FearFrost
10-10-2006, 03:21
Maybe if you did the rosarius skull in bone, it would match up iff you did the shoulderpad...Im all about the rule of 2 or 3...makes sure if you use a color, use it in at least ONE other spot :)

Khrangar
10-10-2006, 03:29
I usually try to do a 'V' of the same colour when I'm painting which is why I suggested the skull pad be gold.

Anyway, I think I've got it.

Gold:
Blue Shoulder Trim
Eagle
Crozius

Bone:
Skull Shoulder Pad
Skull on Rosarius
Skulls on Plasma Pistol

Purple
Plasma Pistol coil/cables
Cable on helmet

I think the blue will be stand alone, unless I paint a knee pad blue.

Sounds good. Bare head or helmet? If helmet, you can do his lenspieces blue or purple...

Khrangar
10-10-2006, 22:09
He will have both a bare head and a helmet, but the helmet will be on his side. The lenspieces will be red, same as the others, but the bionic lens may be purple.

Will you be doing any vehicles, too? id like to see what quartered vehicles look like.

Khrangar
17-10-2006, 21:39
The only vehicles that I'd think of doing would be speeders and rhinos. I tried a land raider and it took me forever to do the first 2 layers of white quartering so I painted it black and sold it.

So to answer your question, there may be vehicles in the future but not likely as they are a pain to paint.

Dumb question: Where are their heads?

Khrangar
22-10-2006, 04:25
Their heads haven't been attached, neither have their backpacks and certain Veteran's arms. This is because I find it easier to paint this way and so I can mass paint heads etc. when I finish the armour. It makes it a bit easier to paint the models without some equipment because I can get into all the little places these items hide/cover.

Your models looks really nice, especially your blue. Few minor critiques. I think both the gold and the bone could use and extra highlight. For my own personal preference, I highlight gold edges with mithril silver to lend it a shining appearance. The bone spots could use a 50/50 bleachedbone to skull white highlight. Possibly just my own oppinions, so feel free to ignore at will! They really do look good!

Khrangar
29-10-2006, 03:01
The gold is actually highlighted as you've mentioned but the flash kills it a bit. As for the bone, I may go back and add another layer, but for now, it'll do.

I like the way that we can see progress through the various stages of a project, but for me nothing brings it all together like a big picture!

Nice - the sheer number of conversions you've used, both subtle and blatant, really combine to create an amazing looking army. I'm following this thread with great interest.

As an aside, do you have any plans for tanks?

Khrangar
22-11-2006, 21:46
@Voronwe[MQ]: The legs, body and head, for that matter, are all from the Iron Warriors Warsmith, the arms are the only things that don't come from that model.

@Snakebite: I may do a Vindicator at some point, but as it stands, there are no real plans for tanks.

Here is my army list:

Sons of Guilliman Space Marines

Chapter Master Acies – 135
Terminator Armour, Master Crafted Storm Bolter, Power Weapon

Captain Oberon - 125
Power Weapon, Storm Bolter, Iron Halo, Terminator Honours, Bionics

Reclusiarch Antinor – 100
Plasma Pistol

Master of Sanctity Antinor – 150
Master Crafted Plasma Pistol, Artificer Armour

8 Man Tactical Squad - 160
Terminator Honours, Power Fist, plasma gun

6 Man Tactical Squad - 155
Terminator Honours, Apothecary Upgrade, plasma gun, missile launcher

6 Man Tactical Squad - 155
Terminator Honours, Apothecary Upgrade, plasma gun, missile launcher

5 Man Terminator Assault Squad - 215
Lightning Claws, Furious Assault

7 Man Assault Squad Lazarus - 189
Terminator Honours, Power Fist, plasma pistol

Dreadnought Galrok - 125
Venerable, Extra Armour, Assault Cannon, Dreadnought CCW

9 Man Veteran Squad - 257
Terminator Honours, Apothecary Upgrade, Power Weapon, lightning claws, power weapon, 7 bolt pistols, 6 close combat weapons, frag grenades

Total: 1256 Before HQ

I may add a Command Squad so that I can fit 3 HQ choices in, but I want to get the stuff I have painted first. The HQ will be interchanged depending on how I feel.

Khrangar
26-11-2006, 02:45
I don't really have anything planned as of yet, and am open to suggestion. It may just end up looking like the others, with mainly sand and fish rocks painted grey for a dead world/urban feel.

What's in your bitz-box that you won't miss? :) I'm of the opinion that large bases beg some extra detail, but that's just me. Some kind of wreckage or part of a corpse always does well, be it one of your own Marines who's just received the Emperor's Peace, or a dead enemy's.

Enjoy your week of healing, but looking forward to you getting back to work, dammit :D

A little more than a week later, and I'm back. Seems I can't stay away from the boys in blue and white.

I've been working on a captain to replace my old one.

I'm thinking of replacing the storm bolter but don't know with what. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The storm-bolter is fine, but if you go with a combi-weapon then that would be a great choice too. I have some spares if you need one.

Great job! Im impressed with the overall quality of the army, you should be very proud!

Are you taking them to a GT or anything?

Not much of an update, but I've been playing around with the captain and removed his gun arm. BodhiTree made an interesting comment about making him an Apothecary in addition to a Captain and I have begun to ponder this idea.

Here are some pics.

I need another Company Champion shoulder pad to complete the look as well as reposition an apothecary arm so that it doesn't look like the others.

A bit more of an update. I've given him a bionic arm and a bolt pistol. He's more minimalist than my last captain so I should be able to better use him in my list.

I was wondering which head I should use for him. I was thinking either the MkIV head w. eagle from the Red Scorpions set or the half bionic head from whichever box has it.

Great looking cohesive force there - really nice stuff :)

Bit late to the party but looking back my opinion on the storm bolter arm is that it looked a tad 'long' in the position you had it (the gun looked like it overlapped the base, and therefore he'd be dragging it through the mud.)

So good call on the bionics - looking good :) I think it'd be far more characterful to have a bare head rather than a helmet - would really make him stand out on the table top as a high ranking individual.

This part of the Captain is now finished, I need to do some touchups on the power fist, but other than that, he's basically done. Now onto the backpack, arm, and head.

Question for you all.

Should I give the Veteran Sergeant a red beakie helmet or a bare head with the helmet on his side?

Khrangar

schoolcormorant
06-03-2007, 17:41
bare head shows leadership, fearlessness in the face of danger. helmet says i'm sensible ;)

i am a big proponent of the bare headed marine in 40k, my terminator command squad will probably all have bare heads, and plus, with a good paintjob on the face it always makes the model look good. not that they don't anyway, the army is great :)

any chance of getting some tanks in?

SC

Khrangar
06-03-2007, 17:53
Bare head it is then. As for the tanks, we'll see. I had a bad experience painting a land raider in SoG colours so I've been put aback by them. It took 2 days to do 2 parts of the colour layering and I wasn't even done!

I may add a razorback for the command squad but we'll see.

I hope to get more of these guys done over the summer, maybe build them up to either 2000 or 2500 points.

Love these guys, very inspiring.

Khrangar
01-05-2007, 06:40
EE, I am actually in Calgary right now for the summer, but there wasn't enough room in my suitcases for them so I had to leave them in Toronto. All I have with me is my fantasy army.

I want to add a couple 3 man bike squads to the army and maybe a devestator squad or two, 5 man squad of devs for now, but will flesh them out at a later point. I need to finish the command squad so that I can have my 3 HQs legally and then maybe a sniper scout squad or something. Hmm, if I get 2 scout squads and the rest of the stuff I mentioned, it'll be legal, nice!
