View Full Version : Cadian 113th 'Desert Devils'

Lord of Skulls
12-10-2006, 22:47
So, it's finally time for me too to make a project log here. Here I will, as you may have guessed, post updates as I progress with my Mechanized Imperial Guard army, the 'Desert Devils'. The nickname is not yet quite decided, so any better ideas will be taken into consideration:)

After a lot of trial and error, I've finally managed to find a colour scheme that is reasonably easy to paint, and gives a tabletop standard I'm happy with.

Here are the first 5 men from the first Squad:

The colours are slightly off, though. I'l take better pictures once the whole squad is done. Here (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/Lord_of_Skulls/Desert%20Devils/New.jpg) is the colour scheme, as some of you may remember from an earlier thread. It gives a better impression of the colour, and shows how the vehicles will be painted.

Ok, here's the list. I've tried to set it up so that I get to paint some infantry for every vehicle I paint:p I'll update this list as things are finished, and add links to the pictures.

5x Guardsmen (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/Lord_of_Skulls/Desert%20Devils/DesertDevils.jpg)

Awesome! Another IG project log. I'm in the process of making my Armored Co into a Mechanized one- for tourney play.

Good luck on this and I'll be keeping an ever watchful eye on this thread. Beware, I'm sure that SC and some of the other IG guys will be posting here soon.

12-10-2006, 23:09
black armour suits huh!? :) my cadians have vermin brown cloth and black armour, the white eagles look great on black IMO.
also, smart use of the flesh, bronzed i think? for a desert.

looking forward to seeing this one turn out.

12-10-2006, 23:17
looks pretty awesome. I want to see some heavy weapons.

Lord of Skulls
13-10-2006, 12:30
Thanks! Glad to hear you like them:)

SC: The skin is actually Dwarf Flesh with a little Green Ink, washed with the same colour with a little black in it. I'm planning to get a good mix of skin colours, to show that they are recruited from different parts of the planet.

I'm going to spray the Chimera today, but I have a problem when it comes to painting it: It will be painted in the two colour that you can see on the Sentinel side in the first post, but I have no idea what pattern to paint it in... So any ideas or examples would be very helpful.

Edit: Oh, and Ziljin: There will be a rocketlauncher coming up in the next group, after the Chimera is done;)

13-10-2006, 20:49
What sort of squad numbering and markings will you be doing? How will you define the Sarge?

Lord of Skulls
13-10-2006, 21:29
I haven't quite decided yet, but the Squad markings will probably be the normal three digit number. I have no idea what to do about the sarge, so any ideas would be nice...

Any advice concerning the camo pattern on the tanks would also be very helpful...

15-10-2006, 00:46
I would not paint the base edges black Lord of Skulls, I think it makes the black too dominant.

Lord of Skulls
15-10-2006, 08:57
You might have a point there... The problem is: What colour should I paint them?

15-10-2006, 11:18
graveyard earth might look ok, usually i put the base colour of the sand/flock etc on top, so for urban i do paint my base edges black - for a grassland, you start with scorched brown and go up to bubonic and bleached so normally paint the base edge scorched brown.
that's been my guide for it in general.

16-10-2006, 19:48
Lord of Skulls - like the colour scheme. But then I would do as my guard are remarkably similar. I paint my base edges black too, so I'll be interested to see what you come up with.

Colonel Jacka
17-10-2006, 15:22
Have I missed something? Why only squads of five and seven?

19-10-2006, 10:54
very nice:)

Lord of Skulls
19-10-2006, 15:12
Thanks for the comments:) The Chimera is taking longer than expected due to school and such, but I'll get there...

Colonel Jacka: The squads are all either 5 or 10 men, I just paint them in smaller groups;)

Lord of Skulls
30-10-2006, 22:20
I was hoping to have the first Chimera done tonight, but that won't happen. (I'll probably have it done tomorrow.)

But here's a WIP pic:

I still need to finish the lenses and shade the metal, but except for that I think it's done... What do you think?

My first I.G. tank, by the way:p

Brush your teeth
30-10-2006, 22:33
looks pretty nice, dessert guard tanks always look cool IMO, just one question, why is the heavy stubber where it is? looks kinda odd just attatched to the hatch like that

Lord of Skulls
30-10-2006, 22:38
Thanks:) The idea behind the Heavy Stubber was to make it look like it's 'co-axial' with the Multilaser. I don't really like the way they are supposed to be mounted, as they look a bit too 'bolted on', rather than as a part of the vehicle.

This way also makes it a lot less likely to break off:p

30-10-2006, 22:52
I thought the same thing. I mounted my Heavy Stubber directly beside the Multilaser. I cut off the tiny nub on the left side, took a file to the sides of the guns, and it fit on great.

31-10-2006, 07:56
very nice chimera. the desert color is very clean, and it looks good on the tanks.
good job, man !

Lord of Skulls
31-10-2006, 21:43
Thanks a lot for the comments, people:)

I've finally finished the Chimera, and I'm quite happy with the result:)
Here it is, along with the first half of the squad it will belong to:

Some more angles: Front (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/Lord_of_Skulls/Desert%20Devils/Chimerafront.jpg), rear (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/Lord_of_Skulls/Desert%20Devils/Chimerarear.jpg), left (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/Lord_of_Skulls/Desert%20Devils/Chimeraleft.jpg), right (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/Lord_of_Skulls/Desert%20Devils/Chimeraright.jpg) and top (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/Lord_of_Skulls/Desert%20Devils/Chimeratop.jpg).

(Markings and such will be added later, as I haven't decided how to do it yet.)

Please let me know what you think, and tell me if you see any mistakes I should correct...

So, now I'll start putting together the last 5 men of the squad... If anyone has any good ideas for how to distinguish the sergeant it would be appreciated;)

31-10-2006, 21:53
i must say those lenses are fantastic, any chance of a tutorial?

Lord of Skulls
31-10-2006, 23:26
Thanks:) I've never been asked to do a tutorial before, but here's (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/Lord_of_Skulls/lenses.jpg) a quick one I made. I don't know the exact mixing ratios, but it should be easy to figure out if you make a test or two first. (I can try to note the ratios next time I do it, and make a new one with real pictures if that's more helpful?)

Hope that helps;)

02-11-2006, 09:53
Looks good, and as mentioned, especially the lenses. I also like the bases quite well. Did you use plasticard for the tiles?

Lord of Skulls
02-11-2006, 10:13
Thanks:) It took a long time to paint, but I'm really happy with it.

And yes, the tiles are cut from plasticard.

Colonel Jacka
02-11-2006, 10:26

Very nice Chimera and Troopers. Looks excellant. Good stuff mate.

02-11-2006, 12:26
im loving those lenses, i need to know how to do them!
the guard are also looking rather nice, i like the contrast it goes rather well, and the wip pic of the sentiel side is nice, are we going to see any black on the chimera?

Lord of Skulls
02-11-2006, 14:54
Thanks a lot, both of you:)

ss_cherub: Look at my post at the top of this page for a tutorial for the lenses...

I was planning to have black parts on the Chimera, but I couldn't figure out how to do it. And now that it's done I'm not sure I think it needs it... I can always add them later, though, if I change my mind;)

A slight update here as well, the rest of squad 1 is glued and ready for the primer:

I'll hopefully start painting them tonight.

Lord of Skulls
21-01-2007, 12:28
Finally an update! Real Life (TM) has caused quite a delay in the painting of these, but they are finally done:) So here is the full first squad. They only need their bases finished, and squad designations, wich I'll add later:

And here's a closeup of the Sarge, Plasma and Rocket Launcher:

The colours came out a lot better than on the earlier pictures, but they still look a little 'faded' compared to how they look IRL.

So, now I'm off to finish building my Leman Russ;)

And of course: Any and all comments/ideas are most welcome!

Lord of Skulls
22-01-2007, 20:20
Hm... not a lot of response here lately... Well, I hope I'll get some now, as I really need some help:

I've become rather uncertain about the bases I used for the first few models, and I'm thinking of changing them for something with less contrast. I've made a new test version, as can be seen on the right in the picture below:

Now, which one should I use? Or should I do something different entirely?

Any help on this would be very welcome:)

22-01-2007, 20:52
I prefer the right one

22-01-2007, 21:12
agreed, right.
but perhaps cut the reeds down a tad?

nice work LoS :)

Rogue 7
22-01-2007, 21:35
Right. Looks much better.

22-01-2007, 21:36
As you have presented them, the right base looks better. (But you already know that.)

I do think the left base has potential however. Try playing around with the colours of the tiles and base edges. Perhaps painting the base edges as you have the other base, and the tiles in a light grey colour highlighted Bleaced Bone.

Then post another picture!

22-01-2007, 22:15
Right one looks much kooler, and the pics make them look much better then the ones on the first page.
Great job keep them updates coming!

Lord of Skulls
22-01-2007, 22:29
Thanks for the comments everyone, I really appreciate it:)
Really makes me want to pick up the pace with this project.

schoolcormorant: Good idea on the reeds. I guess about waist-height would look good. (I just grabbed a bunch I had glued together earlier.) If I go for them I'll also add some brown static grass when i can get it.

TracerBullet: You have a point there... I'll mess around a little with one of the old bases, and see what I can come up with. I'll post a picture here if it turns out good.

Come to think of it, perhaps I could add some dark grey tiles to the new base... I'll have to think about this;)

23-01-2007, 06:56
Desert one for sure, Desert Cadians are always coolest. Especielly with LordoSkulls blue painting on them :D
LOVE those lences ^^

Lord of Skulls
24-01-2007, 15:51
Warwolt: Thanks:o

Concerning the bases, I've just ordered some brown static grass (Thanks generulpoleaxe:) ) so i will wait for that to arrive before I continue working on them. So you can expect to see more test versions in about a week.

As for an update, I've finished a few minor details on the first squad that I forgot to do before taking the picture. (Gloss varnish on the lenses, and adding knives and ammo and such.)

I've also finished building this little guy:

I'll undercoat him now, and probably start working on him tonight.

24-01-2007, 17:31
Wow, I would have posted earlier had I noticed you were back to work!

Great stuff, and these latest pics make your infantry even better looking. You don't seem to be doing any shading, however, but the crisp and clean colors make them look wonderful even without it. Awesome.

Looking forward to the tank.

-peace out

Lord of Skulls
24-01-2007, 21:01

I do shade the models, but it doesn't show up in the pictures. The clothes are washed with Graveyard earth, and the armour is highlighted with a mix of Shadow gray and black. I decided to keep the highlights very slight, both to save time, and to stay with the image of 'rank and file' troopers:)

I've finished the tracks for the tank, and basecoated the turret. I'll start highlighting and lining it as soon as I've posted this;)

24-01-2007, 22:11
Hey LoS,
i really like the little bits here and there,
especially the aquila on the lower side under the HB, last thing a filthy tau might see as the tracks grind his pansy armour into fine, sandy coloured dust ;)

Lord of Skulls
24-01-2007, 22:19
'If you can read this, you just failed your Death or Glory attempt.' :p

I always have a lot of fun adding lots of small bits to my vehicles, and I find that it makes them look more 'real' in some way:)

The Aquila ended up there simply because there were very few other places to put them, compared to the Chimera. The only other one is on the back of the turret. (I'm saving the right side of the turret for the 'designation' number. Though I haven't decided how to do those yet;) )

24-01-2007, 22:34
unless of a chaos disposition, please stand clear of the russ

Lord of Skulls
30-01-2007, 18:03
Ok, it took a few days longer than I hoped, mainly due to school interfering, but my Leman Russ is now finished. This time I used a Fortress Grey undercoat under the brown, which meant that it cowered in about 5 less layers compared to the Chimera:D

Anyway, here it is:

The colours are better than in the earlier pictures, but as I've said, it's still a bit 'faded' or washed out compared to how it looks in real life.

So, what do you think? Any comments, criticisms and encouragement is most welcome.

30-01-2007, 18:06
beautiful work, so smooth and a nice colour. only really can suggest a little highlght but i think it looks nice anyway.
good worj there

30-01-2007, 18:22
ssssssssmmmmmmmmmmooooooooooooootttttttthhhhhhhhhh h! virtually straight out the forgeworld paint shop.

This puupy needs 3 circuits round the big splashy puddles of the armour training area.

Lord of Skulls
30-01-2007, 18:43
Thanks, both of you:)

schoolcormorant: Like I said earlier, it is slightly highlighted, with the base colour and some bleached bone added along the sharp edges. The pictures refuse to show this, though:p (The lining with Graveyard earth is rather hard to make out as well.)

Old Guard: Are you suggesting that I should add some dirt to it? I would, but I'm not sure how I should go about doing that. Do you have any suggestions, by any chance? ;) (Oh, and I'm so sigging that first line:p)

30-01-2007, 20:52
I've always added mud to my tanks by dipping an old tooth brush in Mud colored paint (Testors makes a nice line) and then flicking it at the tank.

The creates a nice effect and appears very natural.

It is a huge mess, and I would sugest doing it outside and masking any part of the tank that you don't want to get dirty.

Hope this helps

Lord of Skulls
09-06-2007, 16:44
What? An update? How could this happen?! :p

I've finally found some motivation to start working on this army again: My girlfriend has let me know that she won't let me start working on my Empire army for WHFB before I've got at least enough of this army finished to be able to play with it along with her newly finished Sisters of Battle army (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23500). That means I'll have to finish the second infantry squad, and their Chimera, and do all the bases. :)

So here's the first half of squad 2:

I'll undercoat them as soon as I've posted this.

Perhaps finishing these will inspire me to finish the rest of the army as well... Who knows;)

09-06-2007, 17:20
great more IG! tank was great, so looking forward to the troops

Lord of Skulls
09-06-2007, 18:32
jasevx: Thank you:) There are pictures of the previous squad one or two pages ago, in case you missed them.

And what is this? I'm on a roll today:p

Here's the first half of Squad 2 primed and ready:

I even got some of the infamous Foundation paints, hoping they'll help me decrease the number of layers of brown needed. (I swear, that Chimera must have up towards 9-10 layers in some areas...)

I'll probably be back later this evening with the current status of the painting.

Edit: Oh, and a cookie for the first person to correctly identfy all the heads I've used in this group:p

09-06-2007, 18:50
Very nice work LoS I'll be watching this closely, will you be doing squad marking in Blue like the Sergeant markings etc or maybe a red or something?

Lord of Skulls
09-06-2007, 23:34
Maynard: Thanks, good to know that I have a few people are following my progress:)

The squad markings are still undecided. I've been planning to do the standard 3 digit numbers in white on the shoulders, but I'm open to any better ideas;)
I'll probably do all the markings at once when the army is finished, though, in case I change the list or something.

And before I go to bed, here's the current status of this batch:

The skin is done, the hair is done, and the first layer of brown on the uniforms is done. The foundation paint really helped, and it looks like two coats of brown over one coat of Dheneb Stone will be enough. (as opposed to 7-10 layers over white, or 5 layers over Fortress Grey:p )

09-06-2007, 23:36
the one second from the left looks like he needs a guitar not a lasgun :p

nice to hear the foundation paints working out, i only bought four of them, dheneb, mechrite, orkhide, adeptus.

looking good mate :)

Moving to SF Logs.

10-06-2007, 16:45
lol SC, it's Kurt Cobain, the Emperor's personal bard during the heresy, reincarnated in the 41st millenium! Astonishing!

Please someone name the heads, I'd like to know where lord 'o skulls nabbed 'em from. They look great.

And am I right in presuming you fit some new heads in cadian helmets? They look good.

Lord of Skulls
16-06-2007, 19:28
schoolcormorant: Thanks! And I'll take your suggestion into consideration:p

t-tauri: Thanks a lot.

scrubout: Thank you:) And since noone else has named them, the heads are (Left to right on the above picture.): Catachan Sentinel driver, Knight Errant, Sister of Battle from the Immolator sprue, I.G. Vehicle accessory sprue head, and another one from the Bretonnia Knight box.

And yes, I've fitted nr 2 and 3 from the left into spare helmets.

And now, onto the actual update... Unfortunately, not much to report, as the warm weather is terrible for my productivity. But the clothing is done, and I've made a start on basecoating the armour:

As I said, not too much progress, but I'm leaving for my summer holiday tomorrow, so I thought I'd get one last update. I'll be gone for about a month and a half, but I'll probably be able to drop by warseer once in a while to answer any questions;)

So, have a nice summer, all of you!

16-06-2007, 19:49
got to say, your painting skills are spot on! unusual to see ig sprayed white but it seems to work for you

Lord of Skulls
16-06-2007, 22:33
Thank you:) Glad to hear you like them.

Had I known about the Foundation paints when I started this project I might have used a black undercoat, but with a basecolour that light white seemed the best choice. And it's easier to 're-basecoat' white parts in black than the other way around;)

30-08-2007, 11:49
Really nice stuff, solid painting. I especially like the Russ & Chimera.

i concur, amazing tanks, myself being a loyal zelous, unswerving servant of his godliness the immortal emperor, i find it a pleasure to see tanks painted in such a way alas my own tankns dont look that good due to the silly ammount of guardsmen and tanks i bought aswell as the imperial guard army deal when they were released, im going to neaten them up now though, thanks so much for the inspiration matey LCE out

Thanks, both of you:) And I'm glad to be able to inspire others.

As you might have noticed, this project has been put on hold for a while, as I'm currently working on my Easterling army. But as soon as they're done (In a week or two) I'll come back to this project, at least for a while:)

Lord of Skulls

Thanks:) Good to hear that someone likes her. I was more expecting the "Guard-women-need-to-have-larger-breasts-than-heads-to-look-female" crowd to come and start complaining:p

And most Witchhunter players should have a few of those heads spare, so getting a few shouldn't be too hard.

23-10-2007, 15:40
Where ARE those heads from?

Mr Kibbles
31-10-2007, 22:56
is there anymore IG pics to be posted?

Lord of Skulls
01-11-2007, 00:03
Well, since you ask;) Here's a small update of sorts:

The first part of squad 2 is nearly done. Only need to fix some details. (Lenses, eagles and such.)

And here is what's being painted up next. Not very exciting, but it has to be done...

And I just couldn't help myself, I had to make a start on my converted Basilisk. It's just a crude mock-up at the moment, to get the idea of how it will look:

(Thanks a lot to Old Guard for the idea.) I'm not happy with the wheels, though, I'll have to get some bigger ones. And I'll need to get something to make the support beams on the back.

I'll try to get the infantry done in the next days, then I can basecoat the Chimera as soon as the weather allows.

Any comments will be most appreciated...

Mr Kibbles

I like your chimera's stubber.

Lord of Skulls
07-12-2007, 17:03
I like your chimera's stubber.
Thanks:) I didn't want the normal pintle mount, as it looks too fragile.

The first part of Squad 2 is finally done:

(Just need the bases and squad markings, but I'm planning on doing that in one go at the end.)

And here's an updated shot of the basilisk. I'm still not sure about the wheels, as they look a bit too small, and I have to add the 'supports' on the back.

Comments would be appreciated;)

07-12-2007, 19:34
Think the wheels'd look fine if they were a little more spaced out, all good otherwise.

07-12-2007, 22:33
i really like the Bassie and yer stubbers on the chimeras
the lenses are painted very well also

08-12-2007, 04:32

That's a good idea... I'll move the rear wheels a bit back, so that they are a bit more evenly spaced. Thanks a lot:)

i really like the Bassie and yer stubbers on the chimeras

Thank you. The Basilisk turned out to be a bit more work than I had expected, but it looks like it will be worth it.

Looking good mate, keep us posted on the progress of that Bassy.
Thanks, will do;) I'll try to get it mounted on its base for a preview soon.

I'm likng the desert camo there LOS. Thinking about starting a desert army based on current British camo. Maybe you could change the regiment name to desert rats? Keep up the good work!

08-01-2008, 13:26
Very nice work!
I especially like the desert scheme you use on the original cadians and try to built my own guard on the same way.
You could maybe add some more weathering on your AFVs : desert conditions usually worn out the vehicles!

Thanks for all the praise:) I'm glad to hear that people like the look of this army, it might even get me motivated enough to finish it :p (I've kind of come to a halt at the moment, as you might have noticed.)

le Mediko: I'll be adding weathering to all of my vehicles at once, when they are all done. That way I'll be sure to get it all in the same colour and such.
