Okay, so a friend of mine and me are starting BFG. Does anyone have any advice which ships to include in an Imperial Navy starter fleet of, say, 1k? We'll of course be buying the starter kit which already includes some vessels.

What's the usual size of your games?

Get some cobra destroyers and some Sword escorts - I use both.

When I play (sadly, not very often), we dont usually have a set size - we roll the scenario and decide on that basis. Some of the most tense games we have played have been 750 point convoy runs and trying to break the blockade.

Lunar and Dictator class Cruisers are a shoe in. They are the very work-horses of the Imperial Navy.

get two dauntless light cruisers before you add any other cruisers to the four from the starter set. this will thus allow you to field 2 light cruisers, 2 cruisers, and two battle cruisers.

INVALUABLE TIPS:

* Don't glue the guns on straight away, use blu-tac or whatever until you know what kind of ships you want to have.
* If one goes for Chaos and the other Imperial (its a possibility), then grab 2 main boxes and do a trade - 8 sets of cruiser sprues will set you up for a long time :D

I like a mix of Tyrants and Dictators myself. I don't generally like broadside lances, I prefer the dorsal ones on the Battle cruisers and battleships although the Dauntless's prow lances are quite handy.

I like a mix of Gothics and Dominators in small games - it gives you long range power, and close range ability. I find cobras less useful as you climb higher in points, although Swords are always a great thing to bring along. Definitely include some in a 1k list. Paddy also has great advice, especially the one about trading with your buddy. My friend and I do this all the time (I've gotten 7 of my cruisers this way).

I was under the impression that it is possible to use the Chaos cruisers that come with the starter box as Imperial cruisers via the reserve rules. They once were Imperial cruisers after all.

Yes that's correct - using the Segmentum Obscuras Reserve Fleet rules found in Armada P29 (available to download from the SG website), you are allowed to field a limited selection of Chaos grand/heavy/normal cruisers - limited as usual for reserves by only being able to field one Chaos vessel for every three vessels of the same type chosen from the Obscuras list.

However, using such a reserve fleet has some pretty major disadvantages attached to it. If a ship rolls a double for its command check it must attempt to disengage every turn once it is crippled, moving towards the nearest table-edge if it fails. If it fails a command check on a double then not only does the above apply but it may also do nothing that turn other than make the minimum move forward. The effects are even worse when fighting a Chaos fleet - sometimes even resulting in the defection of your own ships!

Fleets of Dominators & Dictators backed up by a couple heavier ships with long-range lances are the ones I fear facing most. I'm screwed if I hang back, screwed if I close, and can't win the ordnance race without some real effort.

Dominators are great all around, because you can't stay away from them because of that wonderful 30-150 cm Nova Cannon, but you can't really close with them because of an armored prow and firepower 12 batteries to either side.

They're one of my favorite ships, ever.

I guess it is fair to mention that he will be mostly facing Eldar (me). So roll out the weapon batteries.

If you're up against Eldar then Dominators, Tyrants and Overlords are your Friends. Dictators too, as you will need fighter cover, if only for the Torpedoes...

Id recomend getting lots of ordnance myzelf, build up zog-loads of fighters an put em on all ur ships bases, diz way ur enemy's ordnance dont stand a chance! Also never undereztimate the power of escortz, dey can eazily take out or cripple much larger capital ships by weight of numberz, and their mon-uver-ability makez em more tactical, zee wat i meanz.. also lancez is dead powerfulz, just coz it sayz strengf 2 dont mean it aint good.

Well, it the 2+ save Eldar get against Lances that makes me shy away from them...

The best fleet to use against the Eldar is one made up of Tyrants (especially the Zealous and Dominion with their range upgrades) and/or Dominators, with Overlords in the Battlecruiser slots and an Emperor. Emperor class Battleships are amazingly good against Eldar, giving the fleet a lot of powerful long ranged batteries, and able to provide excellent ordnance cover as well. Swords make the best escorts, with their high speed and 4 batteries each (plus the 2 turrets on each Sword are really helpful for taking out torpedoes).
