View Full Version : Court Jester's Painting Diary

Although this is a WIP project log it is no longer about my 40K army.

It was going to be, but after a few days I realised I'd never get enough updates to make it interesting. Instead i will be updating this thread daily if possible with pictures of what I am currently painting.

The first pictures for this new "direction the thread has taken can be found... here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1091199#post1091199).

Even if I don't get anything finished to show off, I'll post some WIP work. And a quick warning... they won't always be WFB or WH40K models... ;)

The new Elder stuff is one hell of an incentive to make a comeback. I will look forward to watching the army grow.

Welcome back.

any time scale for starting painting?

I will hopefully be putting aside one day a week to paint my own figures...

Very nice looking UM, Court Jester. I like the wraithlord. Glad you didn't put the cloth between it's legs. I assume you also picked up the army deal. One question: what kind of CCW did you autarch have? I've heard from quite a few people it had a chainsword, mine had one too, but it should be a PW. Looking forward to seeing more,

KoU

Court Jester

My Autrach indeed has a scorpion chasinsword instead of a power sword.

excelent marines, how did you go the gold and the blue so well?

Mojaco
23-10-2006, 21:40
Nice crisp blue. i like it.

For a powersword, just use a mirrorsword from the howling banshees. Or the one from the dire avengers. It's not a hard conversion.

paspinall
23-10-2006, 21:52
I know its easy enough to convert, but its still not the point I would like the weapon I should have got, anyway I like the Pose on the Wraithlord, and as an Ultramarines player as well as Eldar I LOVE the work on the Honour Guard and Calgar.

Court Jester
23-10-2006, 22:22
excelent marines, how did you go the gold and the blue so well?

For the Gold this is what I used...

A basecoat of GW's Dwarf Bronze...
followed by a flesh wash (again GW).
Then a highlight of GW's Shining Gold
and a highlight of GW's Burnished Gold
Finished off with a highlight of Foundry's Burning Gold

For the blue I started with a Dark blue, regal Blue works well. Then I painted Ultramarine blue over the top of that leaving the dark blue in the recesses. Then I started adding Space Wolf Grey to Ultra marine blue in 3 stages than I used Space Wolf Grey as the final highlight.

wow, the UMs really remind me of the space marine cover (in terms of colour), the gold is absolutely lovely.

I'm on the home straight now with these chaps, they have been a WIP for too long now... Here is the first one finished. I'll try and stick to adding adding at least one finished figure a day to this thread and I'll start with these Honour Guard.

I have changed the title of the thread to better reflect what I will be posting to it. I have descovered that chronicling the work on a single army would mean that updates are few and far between. Instead I will update the thread with the models I am currently painting, be they a commission or my own personal models.

As stated above I will attempt to update the thread once a day with something, be that a finished picture or a WIP picture I will try to get something posted.

may your paint brushes be pointy,

Dave.

I used Space Wolf Grey

No update for a while, but I had some stuff to sort out over the weekend.

Anyhow,

I have been testing some different colour schemes for some WWII British Paratroopers and decided on this as the one to go with, but with a small colour correction to the beret to make the red darker and more maroon:

The bases look familiar... did you do a fantastic looking marine army with the same sort of 2tone bases, i remember yellow and red, so either howling griffons or imperial fists?
i remember being impressed too, so more likly howling griffons...

now i think of it, also had blue helmets...howling griffon sucessor chaptor?

Court Jester
04-12-2006, 06:41
Aye, that was me... I called them the Sons of Golgotha...

These chaps are not for me but a request was made that the bases match my older figures.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y46/madstoat/The%20Court%20Jesters%20Studio/Painted%20eBay%20Sales/SonsofGolgotha-015.jpg

Although looking at the picture the older style had more contrast between grey and brown, however I think the latest bases look better for their lack of such obvious contrast.

They are Crusade Era Earth Alliance Ships. They are meant to be painted in a dark grey as according to the cannon story the new Earth ships use Shadow Tech...

However I was not a fan of dull grey... so I chose dull beige instead... :D

You are one natural at warhammer painting. I look like a newbie at warhammer compared to how u paint but i guess practise makes perfect. Only started painting UM in the last few weeks. I might try your colours for the blue and all of that. Can u pls post the colours u used for the red cape on one of the honour guard that is amazing. Looks better than the 'eavy metal team half of this work. If we could recommend people for it you'd prob be the first on my list.

Keep up the good work. I don't see many LOTR models on here so its good to see some very good ones. I'm gonna try that gold on my marine tonight or tomorrow morning cause i'm tired. What point brush did u use for the cloak highlight? #0 or #1 just wondering or did u use a big brush for it (flat brushing)

I started with Red Gore over a black undercoat and started adding blood red to the red gore and built up the highlights until I was just using blood red. I kept the paints thinned with water to aid the wet blending.

I used a Winsor & Newton size 2 and size 0 brushes to paint the cloak.

Thanks for your complimanets dude, happy painting.

So part of one of my orders turned up today.

Two Omegas.

My joy was short lived as I opend the parcel to descover the quality of the castings, but I decided to not let that get in the way.

I decided the best way to avoid having nasty gangly bits of detail where whole swathes of the model were badly cast (I am guessing these are some very old molds...) I chose to update the figure so that it looked more in place with the rest of my Crusade Era ships whils keeping that "old Skool" feel.

So I messed about with some plasticard and wire and put this together...

Wow. Just discovered your thread.

I'd like to paint like you do someday. As everyone else said, your UMs are brilliant. The other minis too of course, but it's really nice to see the Ultras just as well painted as that.

'nuf said, back to my brushes :D

Thanks for the compliments. I do have a soft spot for Ultramarines, I'm not sure exatly why though. I will have a whole load more UM's to paint in the new year, the rest of the army...

I hate to say it but...

I had a leshath ship (my one and only order from mongoose) and to be honest its put me right off. Youve done the model proud, but you can tell the amount of work you've put in to making them look good.

Oh I agree the models are really not that great. Something Mongoose really needs to work on...

Sadly I did not have the time to enter any GT's this year. Although maybe next year but what army to take... thats the problem... ;)

I've only been playing it for a month or so now but I must say... I am hooked. I have [/me counts in his head] 4 fleets right now, although only 2 on the painting bench at the moment...

thats a shame as your army was definitely one of my favourites there. how long on average did it take you to do your marines? they were absolutely class.

The same thing happened here me and a couple of friends were watching through my giant box of B5 and then one of us discovered the mongoose site and we haven't looked back since. I'm trying to finish my EA fleet and then get either a minbari or ISA though since seeing your minbari stuff I really want them now

Depending on motivation levels I could finish say 3-4 on a Sunday afternoon/evening or maybe one after work on a week day. Out-put really did vary. I started painting the army in April of 2005 and finished it the day befroe the event.

Considering your painting and conversions, I'd say you should take a Adeptus Mechanicus army, Imperial Guard-counts-as. As much doctrines as possible (which Mechanicus armies deserves considering their background) and many points-heavy choices to keep it small enough to be cheap should go a long way for you to finish it in time without wasting too much money. Of course, anything goes in the list - ogres, ratlings, rough riders; all presents a lot of choices you just have to imagine how to use.

Just a tip :).
