View Full Version : Calling all London specialists!

Chaos and Evil
03-11-2006, 16:58
So the manager of the Oxford Street Games Workshop recently mentioned to me that he'd be happy to have a dedicated weekly Specialist Games night at his store.

That means SG systems exclusively on the gaming tables if there's demand for it.

He's offered Wednesday if enough people are interested (6-8ish would be the minimum).

So I thought I'd throw it out there, anyone fancy a regular SG evening at London's most central GW store?

Learners & Veterans both welcome.

Post if you're interested and I'll get back to ya'll if there's enough replies.

I work in the area but only have Blood Bowl stuff with me.

Chaos and Evil
06-11-2006, 21:22
There are some blood bowl players at the store already IIRC who would be happy to get some games in.

Alternatively I'm sure one of the other gamers would be happy to lend you another Specialist-Game-type army for another system.

Currently Epic & Necromunda are being heavily played at the store (Enough that it might be worth setting up a seperate night for the SG systems anyway).

Hold on, I'll post this on some INQ sites and see if there's any take-up.

Can people email you if they're interested?

I'm very interested, I've even got a spare copy of blood bowl hanging around :)

Gen.Steiner
07-11-2006, 12:40
I'll do that. :)

Mordheim, Necromunda, Epic... even BFG if ya likes. :D

Darkseer
07-11-2006, 12:56
What time would it be?

I get out of work at 5:30, drive home by 6(ish) then it'd take me an hour on the train. So the earliest I'd get there would be 7, but most likely 7:30pm. How many hours of playing time does that leave?

Zeb
07-11-2006, 15:33
Well, with the new Empire models I could quite posibly do a Mordheim Warband again. On Oxford Street, that's the shop in the shoppingcenter (2nd floor), right?

Darkseer
07-11-2006, 15:55
Yeah, the plaza.

Chaos and Evil
07-11-2006, 16:19
Yep the Plaza store is the one.

The Plaza shopping centre closes at 8, so we'd have (from whatever time you can arrive / get away from work) until 8.

I'm self-employed so on the normal 'core' gaming evening I tend to arrive around 4pm and have time enough for two games.

This is looking quite promising in number of replies across the various forums so far.

Currently the Plaza has a Necromunda campaign ongoing, and there's quite a few Epic & Bbowl players, so those games have a 'current' foundation... once we've a better idea of the mix of players coming along we could expand into more campaigns like Mordheim & Inquisitor too.

Can people email you if they're interested?

Sure, though it'd be easier to just get 'em to post on one of the forums where I've started one of these threads.

The Plaza has lots of the new 40k city terrain which makes for great Inquisitor games incidentally.

irish_meadow (at) hotmail.com is me if they'd prefer to email.

(replace (at) with @... though I get so much spam I don't know why I bother trying to hide my email address from the web crawlers any more!)

EDIT: The plaza also has lots of SM1/2-era Epic scale buildings. (About 50 of them)

Gen.Steiner
07-11-2006, 18:02
Right, next time I go home, I shall pick up my Epic things. Couple of Titans, a few Space Marines... a Waaagh.

Do they play Epic 40K or Epic Armageddon?

Chaos and Evil
07-11-2006, 18:15
Epic Armageddon is played. If you're not familiar with the latest edition of the rules there'll be people around who can help you out.

We've got several marine players, a Titan Legion player, several IG players, at least two eldar players, an Ork player... etc. A healthy enough Epic scene that you can always get a game basically.

Which is part of the reason that the Manager asked if I thought there was support for a SG-only evening basically.

Until I'm sure that there'll be enough people to give the go-ahead signal for all the forum peeps to decend on GW on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays are the best days to get a pick-up game.

Gen.Steiner
07-11-2006, 18:28
It seems that I shall have to dive into E:A then. :( Boo and hiss. Never mind, if it gets my Orks givin' it sum dakka then it's worthwhile.

I wonder if the place is large enough for another Titan Legion army (I have two Warhounds and 8 Warlords :D)?

swiftblade
07-11-2006, 19:14
cool great idea,i'm a regular at plaza.
i'm really interested in playing blood bowl and epic.
I've learnt how to play blood bowl and i have the epic rulebook its just i can't be bothered at the minute.(that just shows how dedicated i am)
You might know me. I'm the 'kid' with the 'beardy' wood elf army. Apparently.
Anyways great idea, hope it can be sorted out soon.

Chaos and Evil
07-11-2006, 19:38
Hey Swiftblade.

I like magnets.

There you know who I am now. :)

I'm going to set a tentative date of Wednesday the 15th for the first SG evening (That's next week), though I'll have to clear it with 'da boss first, and be certain that we're going to get enough people.

Gen.Steiner

I'm going to set a tentative date of Wednesday the 15th for the first SG evening (That's next week), though I'll have to clear it with 'da boss first, and be certain that we're going to get enough people.

I'll be there - but none of my SG stuff will be, it's all 100 miles away. :(

Unless, of course, I can get home this w/e.

Chaos and Evil
07-11-2006, 20:01
Not a problem I'll try and ensure there's plenty of spares to go around for the first few weeks until things settle in.

Feel free to spread the word to any others you think might be interested in a weekly SG systems evening.

Darkseer
07-11-2006, 20:32
Shuts at 8!
God dammit!

Murderous Monkey
07-11-2006, 21:23
Will you be running particular games on alternate weeks or anything? I've always wanted to give Mordheim a go and have played Blood Bowl casually (i.e. only out the box). But I'm not really up for epic or even Inquisitor (too many fingers in too many pies already). How likely is easch given system to be represented on any given Wednesday, and will there be any sort of campaign running or is it probably going to be one off games?

*wanders off to look at beastman warband rules and think appropriately evil thoughts*

Chaos and Evil
07-11-2006, 22:11
I'd hope that we could have onrunning campaigns for the systems (Necromunda actually has a campaign running at the Plaza right now, while Mordheim isn't hard to do either. Blood Bowl seems pretty easy to sort out a leaderboard or knockout ladder for. Inquisitor is a bit different as in general you need a GM for a campaign, and there currently isn't much of an Inquisitor base at the store***).

So most likely we'll have onrunning campaigns / leader boards for each system that is played enough.

There are 4 gaming tables at minimum, with the possibility of more if things get busy enough. Certainly enough to have lots of game systems running at once. Blood Bowl doesn't even need a big table. :)

*** precinctomega: Any news from your Inquisitor forums?

Gen.Steiner
07-11-2006, 23:20
Hell, Blood Bowl could be played on the till's table or the floor...!

Chaos and Evil
07-11-2006, 23:24
I was more thinking of the painting desks, but any port in a storm. :)

Zeb
08-11-2006, 08:37
Well, my stuff is in Sweden and I'm not going home until I get married in December... But when the new plastics come for the Empire I'll defenatly sign up for a Mordheim campaign, the problem is...it was 5 years ago I played it. ;)

I'm doing my Ph.D at UCL so I could walk down more or less any time after 4pm. (actually before, but I would feel bad leaving to early).

ThousandPlateaus
08-11-2006, 14:52
I'd be quite interested, too - especially for BB, =][= and Necromunda.
I'd only be able to get there for 7, though.

I'd be quite interested, too - especially for BB, =][= and Necromunda.
I'd only be able to get there for 7, though.

Sounds cool, both of those games can be played in an hour, rather than the usual two for a GW game.

I'll be getting confirmation of our permission to invade the store from the manager tomorrow.

ThousandPlateaus
09-11-2006, 09:45
Excellent - are you intending to start next Wednesday?
I'll probably just come and mooch about/introduce myself - I'd love to start a couple of campaigns/tournaments ahortly thereafter, though.

Darkseer
09-11-2006, 11:11
Will there be post-gaming drinks?

I'm sure I could make it in time for that :D

Zeb
09-11-2006, 11:14
Doh, is drinking the only thing on you Londoners mind.... Well, I could have one if you twist my arm...!

I just relised, since we are in a GW store, I can't use some of my old models since they are definatly not GW... I more or less have to start from scratch.

Also for the Mordheim section, which warbands are avalible if we start a campaign?

Gen.Steiner
09-11-2006, 11:21
I can't use some of my old models since they are definatly not GW...

Who'll know if you don't say anything?

Chiron
09-11-2006, 12:08
Who'll know if you don't say anything?

Exactly, I used some different models at my old gw, noone said owt. Or to the guy who used some rather awesome ones for his TK army

I'll be bringing along some mordeimers next week, so someone better bring stuff :D

ThousandPlateaus
09-11-2006, 12:43
Well, I won't be bringing miniatures next week - but shortly after, I should.
I am always up for post-GW drinking - actually, Darkseer, it might be a good opportunity for myself and Steiner to discuss To4G in some detail, too.

Darkseer
09-11-2006, 12:52
I don't know that To4G is, but drinking sounds good and I've been meaning to meet up with Steiner for a while.

PM me your mobile number and email.

Zeb
09-11-2006, 13:13
Well, I don't have any minis with me untill after Christmas and my wedding. And I have a theme for a new chaos army that will be quite expensive so I'll wait forthe new plastics. But if someone has a warband to spare I'll play.

After gaming drinks, sure.

Darkseer
09-11-2006, 13:27
The infamously bad Ben Crouch's Tavern is right round the corner. I suggest we go there!

Or there's the home of all metallers - The World's End in Camden.

I'll probably just come and mooch about/introduce myself - I'd love to start a couple of campaigns/tournaments ahortly thereafter, though.

Without letting the thread snowball away from me, yes I'd love it if things could start next Wednesday. :D

I don't expect any tourneys / campaigns to get started for a couple of weeks until we know who's coming, what they're interested in bringing etc.

Darkseer
09-11-2006, 14:35
Awesome.

Battles, followed by beer.

Duh - sorry Darkseer - I was confusing Firebase for Watchmen - mein apologies.
And no! Not the Ben Crouch! Haha. Anywhere but there (except Camden :))
I've been meaning to oredr the new Redemptionists for mein WHs so I'd be happy to get them in time for Necromunda gaming in a few weeks.

I'm in the states until Christmas but would be well up for a bit of Necromunda when I get back in the New Year so count me in.

@ Zeb: PhD at UCL hey... I know the place pretty well. Are you willing to let on which Department you're in... you can PM it to me if you want to keep your identity secret ;)?

Cheers,

Gen.Steiner
15-11-2006, 14:10
Darkseer, got your text, 'fraid I've no credit.

I'll rock up around 6-6.30, and stay maybe an hour or so.

One slight teeny problem, for me at least, is that this clashes with the University of London Games Society's Wednesday meets, so I may end up coming every other week.

Darkseer
15-11-2006, 14:16
No Steiner, you're going to stay to the end because we've got us some drinkin' ta dooo!

Gen.Steiner
15-11-2006, 14:17
That, my dear sir, depends on my essay and its willingness to be completed before 10am tomorrow. :p

By the way, as I've left all my Specialist Games stuff 100 miles away, would anyone object if I brought 1000 points of Deathwing in a feeble attempt to get a game in?

Darkseer
15-11-2006, 14:23
If only I didn't live so far away, I'd bring my Deathwing too... grrr!

We might not have to - providing everyone's availability/sanity and whatnot, we could always find a more suitable time and hold any meetings at mine - I've enough space; but anyway, we can sort that later.

It was great to meet you guys. I was blown away by the quality of your models including the epic and Necromunda stuff that I saw.

That's something that's been concerning me, too, to be honest - I can only really get there for 7 unless I work through lunch, which I don't mind doing, but perhaps not every Wedesday.
Anyway - keep me posted on any developments.
Good to meet a few of you, too.

I was left as the ONLY person who wanted to go to the pub afterwards.

You lot call yourself wargamers??

ThousandPlateaus

Uhm... I 'd sort of run off to the pub; I've been working 12hour days this week and really needed a pint near home so I could crawl into bed...

A game of Blood Bowl. (http://elf.planetquake.gamespy.com/pics/SGdays/1.jpg)

A Necromunda game about to get underway. (http://elf.planetquake.gamespy.com/pics/SGdays/2.jpg)

A game of Epic I played (I lost pretty handily by the end of the game!) (http://elf.planetquake.gamespy.com/pics/SGdays/3.jpg)

Tonight was rather interesting, had a game of Mordheim (the City Watch triumphed over the vicious pirates of ... someone... I've forgoten your name :(), spent the rest talking about a possible Mordheim Campaign with a chap called Chet (?) and then hung out with Thousand Plateaus.

This Inquisitor campaign... is it 54mm or 28mm? Please let it be 54mm.

I couldn't get to the Plaza yesterday, since we interwiewed potential new flatmates.

I'm going to be in Sweden from the 8th to 18th of Dec. and the 20th we are having a Christmas party at the department. But after that I would be very interested in a Mordheim campaign.

Gen.Steiner
23-11-2006, 14:02

Going out on a limb here, but wouldn't it be better to wait for the new Empire figures to come out and start with the Mordheim campaign then... So it might actually involve some human warbands. It's my experience that humans tend to be under reprecented becaues lack of models (or everyone uses the samr parts).
We would also have to decide wich warbands that can be used, and I strongly advocate for a gamemaster as well.

I play humans - the Mordheim City Watch. They use the Empire troops that're out at the moment...! At the moment, of the six people definitely involved, there are five human warbands and one Possessed.

There's a chap called Chet who wants to run the campaign.

The only issue with Mordheim at the plaza is the lack of much in the way of Mordheim terrain. When we play we normally have to use the empire in flames rules. In our last campaign I played as Marienburgers, but this time I'll likely do Middenheimers, since I'm making a Cult of Ulric army and can just use models from there.

There is plenty of terrain for Necromunda and Epic, as well as a BFG space board.

Hoping to see some more of you next week, bring Necromunda!

Gaming days at the Plaza are:

Wednesday (4-8pm) - Specialist Games (All SG are welcomed)

Thursday - (4-8pm) Veterans' gaming night (16's and over, most Warhammer Fantasy, but there's normally one or two games of 40k too).

Sunday - (12-6pm) Open gaming (Lots of nooblets, very crowded, but fun if you enjoy that atmosphere).

Wednesday would be the perfect day to bring a Necromunda gang... there's even someone who has the leader of his gang as a twin-pistol-weilding marksman named 'Cleric', so you'll be right at home. :)

Contemplating joining that Mordheim campaign tomorrow but I have a couple of questions.

1. Do all miniatures have to be painted? (I know that there aren't many in any given game but I'm slow and concentrating on my Warhammer army).

2. Can anyone suggest a valid list for a chaos warband from the north? I'm thinking some hardy warriors who've taken it upon themselves to investigate this sign from the gods. I don't fancy possessed that much (although I'm considering it - some marauders, a sorcerer and 2 bloodletters as my possessed!) but don't have many other ideas short of mercenaries with a close combat stance.

Failing that I can bring out the original plastic warband I guess. Got to love those old dodgy paint-jobs!

Thanks for any advice and hopefully see you tomorrow!

Only just seen all this going on. I'll attampt to bring my Delaques along for some Necromunda action on Wednesday. Drop me a line if anyone's interested in a game. And if anyone plays BFG out there let me know because that game rocks.

No need to worry about arranging a necromunda game, there's always at least 2 or 3 necromunda players there, myself included. Just bring along and play.

We are trying to do a few BFG game's next week, because there are a few people who are intested. But most of them are new to the game so we might have to do some explation games?

what fleet do you have?

Imperial but I take delivery of Nidz this week, so once they're painted and ready to rock I am happy to play either.

See you Wednesday I guess. Unless I'm held up which is more than possible....

Sad to see this has finished so soon, it'd be nice to know what happened.

I called in to the store wed last week to be told it had been cancelled as the manager was encouraging people to "setup there own groups"

Aye, it lasted two months before we got cancelled. :(

Incidentally we are currently looking into starting up a SG's group in London independent of GW (Since they don't want to or even are not allowed to support it).

More news on that as it breaks.

I've gotten a similar message in my local store. Looks like the end for SG in-store unless we get a few people who care about SG in charge.

it's not about care, it about money, they think in terms of who much money SG is making them now, not how much it could make them in the future.

any progress on a specialist games club?
I've dug up a lot of my old epic, and Mordheim/Necromunda have always apealed to me.

Failing that are there any players who want a game on the weekends? I don't have a place in london at the moment but there is a games shop near me that's usually got space for a game or two.

Currently a few of us are just gaming at each other's houses, no regular club yet.

it would be cool if you could bring 3000 points of Chaos, me and another guy are going to be running the Epic intro table and it would be sweet if i could play your Chaos.

I can have a go at putting together a chaos force, if you don't mind having a few proxies and unfinished miniatures in the list. Unfortunately the only army that's near complete at the moment is the Orks, and even they are unpainted (waaay to lazy :-)).

edit- Will be down on Tuesday (15th), and will be bringing 3000pts of Epic Chaos too.
