Well the time has come for me to start building this thing as it's been sat in my spare room for the last couple of months gathering dust whilst i got on with other things.

so a few pics
here's how it arrives
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1304.jpg
not very exciting but fun to rumage through(with my wife ensuring that i know exactly what all the strange little bits are for and not just weird random stuff). anyway once all the bits were checked and accounted for it's onto the building part.

throughout this project i'll be building and painting the nessecary parts once at a time so as i can get into all the nooks and crannies, so first up it's the cockpit.
parts-
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1305.jpg

all cleaned and washed and ready for spraying(ouch that looks sore)
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1306.jpg

so now it's onto the painting for these parts, i should be able to get this done by the weekend, but due to the fact it's the 40k GT heat 2 this weekend it might go a bit slow until then.

enjoy

Yay, I love thunderhawks :)

Those seated space marines could make for some interesting conversions/dioramas.

Cool, really looking forward to seeing this project:D

Do wish forge world did a smaller flyer for marines as a bit scared to buy a thawk due to size and the cost as my missus would hurt me a lot!

twelve dollars says he wont finish by the 2nd

yeah i'll take that bet

anyway, i never managed to get anything painted last nightdue to having a scratch on my eye from rugby training so i got on with building the next part, the lower fuselage

here's the parts
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1307.jpg

surprisingly the kit doesn't seem as complicated as it looks, fairly straightforward tp be honest.

this is it put together with the nose that'll be added once the cockpit is in
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1308.jpg

and a couple of interior pieces for you

The detail on this model is awesome, and I have every faith that you will do it justice SpikeyJames. What colour are you going to paint the interior? Bone-ish or metallic?

07-11-2006, 14:28
the interior will be dark grey with some metalics

First thing first, Im really excited about seeing this kit realized...despite being a gamer/painter for like half of my 26 years, I have never tried anything half as large or tough. I think you are going to do a great job on it...it really fits your Mentors having a massive high tech death-birdie.

the instructions are 5 pages for this one, basically pics of it made in stages, for some of the smaller parts you need a fairly keen eye(the missus is good for this). i dont really consider them poor i found them fairly easy to follow.

i'm gonna be painting it with brush, it should be easy enough as i'm trying to keep it in manageble(sp) parts

well my rugby match has been put off until tonight so i thought i'd show what i got upto last night while i've got a few minutes to spare.

firstly i went to task on the heavy bolter mounts
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1320.jpg

and here they are cleaned up and assembled to the extent i need them to be for painting
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1322.jpg

next up was the under carraige and top of the hull, here's pic's of them both uncleaned, they have both now been made ready for building. i've also cleaned up the main hull part but don't have a pic at the present time.

Looks sweet mate ,are you painting all the bits then building the Thunderhawk ,Im interested to see how your going to do this because Im a bit confussed how people paint there models which have detailed insides like the Thunderhawk or the Valkarie then spray the out side of the model with out damaging the inside paint job.

spikyjames
14-11-2006, 09:17
basically i'm painting each part individually made up, once a part has been done it will them be attached to the rest of the model next up is the lower fuselage.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1365.jpg

i'm going to paint this inside then out and once it's done the cockpit will be attached.

spikyjames

yep the entire interior will, and currently is (no phot's due to being at work will get some tomorrow).

as mentioned above i'm at work, busying myself building this thing and the whole lot apart from the missiles has been cleaned and partly glued. sorry deadly, i've not had a chance to take pics of the whole lot but i will take pics of the parts and let you know how many pieces are in each.

so hopefully there should be alot of pics to be posted tomorrow.

15-11-2006, 18:58
ok so i promised and update tonight and here it is, firstly i have completed the lower part of the hull and attached the cockpit. there should be a roof between the rear of the cockpit and the wall the rear of the compartment, i found whilst test fitting the upper hull that this hampered a smooth fit so as you cant actually see it once the things put together i decided to leave it off.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1367.jpg

next are a couple more pics of the twins

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1368.jpg

any questions please feel free to ask.

james

spikyjames
15-11-2006, 19:10
and another up date, basically these are the rest of the parts that i have cleaned up and glued.

first up is the upper hull, if you look at the rear you'll see the air brakes these are 2 part and fairly easy to fit. at the front you'll notice a pointy bit, this is for re-fuelling similar to today's military aircraft. this is optional.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1369.jpg

next up we have the rear fuselage and weapons and comms array.
the rear fuselage is in 2 parts fuselage and engine exhaust.
the weapon and comms array is in 4 parts, sight, comms array weapon barrel and mount.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1370.jpg

next we have the main wings each consits of 5 parts main wing front and rear engine, and 2 flaps.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1371.jpg

next we have the rudder and 2 small front wings, the rudder is in 2 parts with 3 flaps and the small front wing are 2 parts each, wing and flap.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1372.jpg

any more questions please feel free to ask.

the only thing i have left to put together are the missile's that can go under the wings if required.

Looking very good as always, James:) You have no idea how much I'm looking forward to seeing this done...

One thing: I've been planning to build a Thunder Hawk for my Marines (from the CoD parts, for that gothic look;) ) and I've had trouble figuring out where the different weapons are mounted, and the approximate firing arcs... Do you think you could give me some pointers about that when you're done assembling yours?

Good luck, and I'm eagerly awaiting more pictures;)

A 747 (or any other large transport aircraft) is piloted by 2 guys (plus a navigator/flight engineer), and they aren't superhuman...

I assume the guns either have separate crew, are fired by the passengers or have machine spirits to operate them.

Anyway, it's looking great so far and you're fairly rattling through painting it. Most impressive.

Rikkjourd
16-11-2006, 12:36
They really only need one pilot. He flies the craft with his steerin'-stikk and then he has a button that sets off all the dakka-dakka-dakka-DAKKA-dakka-DAK-KA-dakka at once. Simple!

i know at the minute it's still looking fairly bland but there will be white soon. i'm really enjoying putting this thing together after painting lot of small stuff, one massive bit of advice i'd give anyone who gets one of these kit's is make sure you dryfit all pieces before you paint them (i haven't had any major problems, fingers crossed) and you may need to exert some pressure whilst glueing.

as always any questions please feel free to ask.

looks really great, the colour on the hull looks very hm, lets say natural, not so artificial as many large single-coloured surfaces do when a thick layer of paint is applyed

but what strikes me when looking at that last picture with the ramp lowered is the idea of installing red leds in the interior, you know, like the alarm lights you see in theses WWII movies inside the carrier-planes shortly before the paratroopers jump off, it would make the interior better visible and make it an even more astonishing sight when the marines leave their thunderhawk in a red gloom... what do you think? probably too late, is it?

Hey.

Looking good James.

What brush are you using for a drybrush? mine always seems to be a little obvious and streaky when i do it.

As for the thunderhawk holding capactiy...its 30 points worth of marines.

Power armour counts as 1 point, terminator armour as 2 points, bikes as 3 and dreads are 10 I believe.

Can hold more than one squad aswell.

Hope this helps.

it's the mentor legion, have a look here for a few pics- http://s32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/mentor%20leigon/

the brush is the GW large flat drybrush, just make sure you have it very dry, it's a good idea to brush onto a piece of tissue once you have removed most of the paint this will let you know how heavy it's going to be(hope that makes sence).

As for the thunderhawk holding capactiy...its 30 points worth of marines.

Power armour counts as 1 point, terminator armour as 2 points, bikes as 3 and dreads are 10 I believe.

Can hold more than one squad aswell.

That's decent. I want one now :)

But 870 pts is loads. Still, both my dreads and a 10 man assault squad spilling out of a thunderhawk would be ace!

Spikyjames, I don't like you anymore!! You keep putting me off my essay because I keep wanting to look more a this wonderful model you are gracing us with! Are you going to paint white on the wings, or will you paint white on areas of the fuselage as well?

I noticed the small Mentors symbol in between the cockpit windows, did you just GS that on?

18-11-2006, 14:49
Holy moley, that's looking mighty impressive. I second the request for a size comparison (with a Land Raider or something).

gotta love the aerodynamics of that thing; it's just so Imperial. None of this reducing drag nonsense. Just look real mean, and the air will get out of your way.

ok then tonight's update. as requested here's a pic of it with a predator

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1380.jpg

and the other side, just one point to note on this, if you have a look at the wing mounting areas you'll see that i've had to cut a small piece out this is due to the wing mounted engine getting in the way, it's no real problem, just letting you all know so that if you get one for yourself you know what to do.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1381.jpg

next we have the attack wings. sorry about the crap pic. these will not get mounted until the main wings are on.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1382.jpg

as always feel free to ask any questions.

main wings are primed ready to be painted tomorrow, then it's just the heavy bolter mount and missile to go. i think somebody might be owe me $12:D

i will do a short summary once the model is complete.

spikyjames
19-11-2006, 20:29
the metal was fairly simple, just bolt gun metal over a black undercoat the a 50/50 wash of black ink/water with a little drop of washing up liquid added to force it into the recess's. if it pools anywhere just give it a light drybrush with boltgun metal and it should cover it up.

Agreed on the superb work, Spiky.

As to the Scythes: Great choice for your next marine army! Stuart Morrison's Scythes were the first marine army that I saw online that blew me away, and he had some solid fluff pieces and a solid website to accompany his army. Sadly, this (http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Shire/4010/) is all that is left of his Scythes site ... Also, as far as I knew the Scythes have nearly no terminators, having lost nearly all of the chapter to the 'nids who ate their homeworld, and most of their first company in the process.

I could be wrong, but looking forward to your take no matter :D

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_1392.jpg

and that's about it for this project.

ok then brief summary.
in hindsight, next time i will clean the model completely and dryfit it to make sure all the parts fit correctly, only once i'm happy with this will i then start part painting it.

the kit itself is fairly easy to put together as long as you follow the instructions. it takes a pretty keen eye to recognise where some of the smaller bits go at first but once you start putting it together it soon becomes apparent where they all go.

i was happy with painting it in parts and will do it again on whatever i get next, i think this makes perfect sence on such a big model as it's easier to handle smaller parts, if you do it this way make sure any colour mixes you use are very accurate.

overall i'm very happy with how this project went and the final outcome. i do plan on getting the transporter in the hopefully not too distant future.

any questions please feel free to ask.

thanks for your support

Simply put? This is spiky's log, not yours. Try not to stir anything up.

And spiky? Drybrushing works. Thunderhawks are meant to be dirtied up and battered. They do after all plummet from the atmosphere with their cargo so I should imagine they get a bit chipped and burnt up.

I agree. Scorch marks and the like from reentry would look really cool IMO. I've never been that good a painter (I tend to go for neatness nowadays rather than trying anything flashy) but I reckon people with more 'skill' could make it look exceedingly good.

Great work james, i know you set yourself a deadline to finish this and suceeded, but are you leaving it at that or are you planning to revisit it at a later date.

Maybe roughen it up a bit with some MIG weathering pigments to make it really diiiirrrtttyyyy!!!!

Spiky,
the finished thing is just, well it's just great, i'm not going to get into this argument with ainulainour as i have just read the past two pages and am pretty sure i've missed something,
it seems fitting (though i hadn't noticed it until the close-ups) to have eagles or hawks (birds anyway ) on the thunderhawk, if there is one thing in the GW/FW range that deserves eagles on its the thunderhawk.
for 11 days work it looks like months of painstaking freehand 'tempest' for example. and i think that it's now your duty (hah duty...) to do another Project log and beat the 11 day mark with the transporter - actually i'm fairly sure you'd want to go a bit slower on the next one huh?! so well done.

I think this is his new site - http://www.the-scythes.com/ - there was some problem with his old domain registrar or something.

You might get some inspiration from here as well, although I suspect you'd do them a lot better.

And the guy over paided, anyone paying 1000 what ever is over paying and needs his head read.

I have the number of a good shrink he should call him!

The price was including the cost of the actual thunderhawk.

No need, props for digging that up.Then again that was about 2 two years ago... (http://www.easternfrontstudios.com/index.php?n=modules/forum&a=3&d=4&o=14&q=181)

Anyways, I don't want a flame war, I was just trying to show a Thunderhawk painted better (or at least I thought so), but I know I shouldn't have. Sorry.

Well sir, your dedication and skill serve as an inspiration to those of us who lack one or both.

The T-Hawk rocks!

Spiky how on earth are you a lazy squig?

Finishing a thunderhawk in approx. a month is the best I've heard someone do it. Grats. :)

Looking foward to your ogre/scythes log.

Mmm, those scythes are a nice scheme. They're one of those where if you'd just descrobe it to me I'd think it was awful, but actually seeing them they look lovely.

I think it was a bit under a month, about 13 days of actual work on it and working most of the day on a lot of those wasn't it Spiky?

This looks absolutely fabulous, probably one of the best Thunderhawks I have ever seen, and I can't beleive how quickly you did. Just out of interest, what colours did you use for the green?
Someone also mentioned dirtying it up a bit due to the atmostspheric drops. I have to say, things do look especially awful after atmostpheric entry, the Shuttles always need a new coat of paint (we've started having bets on who can do the most damage to the NASA logo on the wing :p). However, I think this would be perfectly fine as it is, the Imperials probably have some kind of uber-heat-resistant paint. Anyway, dirtying the white up on that could spoil it, and personally I think it looks brilliant as it is.
Congrats again,
Steve

9 night's, between 3 and 5 hours work per night. and 2 full days about 12ish hours work per day.

the green is my usual mix. dark angels green followed by 50/50 DA green/goblin green, then goblin green and finally 50/50 goblin green/skull white.

Damn ive been away for a few week and look what i miss!

sorry to bring this backfrom the dead but i have a few observations, comments.
1)thanks Spikyjames for answering my question. at least im warned now when i buy my own :)
2) i think it would look nicer if there was more white in it. as it is now it looks a bit too Dark Angel - the white doesnt seem to stand out much (in the pictures at least)
3)i like the painting on it - a model that big is great to drybrush, very quick process and great results!

good work. and im looking forward to seeing the transporter

no probs mate, i am planning to put a bit more white on some of the vehicles i'm currently planning. i will do a transporter probably later on next year.

got a fair few plans before then though, and it would be nice to do a different army to try and get away from green and white (damn dark angels i'm gonna have to do)

there will however be a new mentors thread in the new year with all the extra bits i want to get done.

james:)

This is fantastic! I love how you've drybrushed it; I feel drybrushing adds a sort of weathering effect, which goes well with large models.
Really tempted to get a "big thing" now.
