View Full Version : Metal-themed Slaanesh army

07-11-2006, 16:13
This is not strictly speaking a project since the army is allready finished but I thought this would be the best place to post it anyway. Let me explain why. I have quite a lot of pictures of the army. Posting them on a large forum such as Warseer eats quite a lot of bandwidth. Therefore I have divided the army into four parts and will post one each week in order to have some control of the bandwidth usage. I hope this is OK.

In early 2003 I had just finished an ork army. By the end I was somewhat frustrated with the fact that I had to paint below my level in order to complete the army in time. Then I started wondering how well I could actually paint an army without any time limits. So I decided to try. I would let each model take as long as I felt it needed and use my other armies to play on tournaments in the meantime.

At the time, NMM was something new and cool and I decided I wanted to try it on the army... Not a good idea. I learned a lot from it but one thing was that NMM on an entire army is way too time-consuming. The army took about two years to finish, but I am very pleased with the end reslut. And it won "Best painted" on all the major torunaments in Sweden in 2005, something never before accomplished by any other army, so I guess other people liked it as well.

First a bit of background. The moment I opened the 2nd ed rulebook and saw a picture of the original Noise marine model (the one with an electric guitar with an underslung bolter) I though "Wow! That's so cool!". Time passed and I collected and painted a few armies. GW released two editions of new noise marines and with each edition the guitar image moved further away. had to do something about. I needed to bring the guitars and the heavy metal back in the Noise marines!

Eddie - Daemon prince of Slaanesh
That Eddie should lead the army was obvious. What could be more iconic?
People tend to ask quite a lot about the parts it is made of so I guess I'll tell it before you ask. The legs are from one of the Albion giants, the torso and the arms are from a Keeper of secrets (allthough most of the torso is covered with green stuff) and the wings are from the old zombie dragon. The head is entirely scratch built and the jeans are made with green stuff.

The Kings of metal - Chosen of Slaanesh
I wanted to include a unit of chosen so that I could model a unit of highly individual characters. In game terms it is not cost-effective at all, but I like it.

A doom siren and a champion.

Two "normal" chosen marines.

07-11-2006, 16:14
A sorcerer and a resurrected spirit of a Chaos hound.

The icon bearer. The banner is painted to look like the cover of the Manowar album "The Triumph of Steel". The text on the back of the banner is a quote from the song "Hail and kill" and says "Power and dominion are taken by the will, by divine right hail and kill!"

07-11-2006, 16:14
Rhino tour bus
Rhino tour bus with Warp amp, Daemonic rune, extra armour and smoke.

The top hatch of the rhino. The best freehand I had ever painted at the time (and possibly still). A slightly modified version of the cover of the Manowar album "Kings of metal".

The sides of the rhino. Since this unit is quite Manowar-inspired I decided to draw a Noise marine-version of their logo. And of course the tour name, the "Imperatice universe tour M41". And tour dates.

The interior of the rhino. Not the best picture but you get the point...

Next week I'll post some of the troops.

Oh yeah-i saw these on B&C-they're great....very original and some of the free hand is awesome :)

Man this is awesome. Rock on!!

- F -

07-11-2006, 16:46
Show me guitars!

I love the champion's fingers - that's a fun touch. :)

07-11-2006, 16:50
That is an awesome concept. A friend of mine painted the "Master of Puppets" album cover art on a Warmachine piece. With "Menoth" written like the "Metallica" type treatment, and the crosses in the graveyard were Menofixes. Awesome stuff.

07-11-2006, 17:57

That's all I have to say.

I hope you'll make a land raider with working speakers and sound system inside.

07-11-2006, 18:23
Class army, seen these on B&C and as a Iron Maiden fan of 25+ years I love the DP.

07-11-2006, 19:02
Bulonicus, excellent painting, even better musical taste \m/:evilgrin:\m/ !

If you had put there Saxon, three of my favourite bands would be there! Lovely Pleasure Slaves;). I had a similar idea, but my chaos rhino got lost in the mail...

@Philbrad: Just in case you are interested I have posted the setlist of the current Iron Maiden tour here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52357). A fan for 16+ years.

07-11-2006, 19:05
Is it just me, or does anyone else think that doom siren needs a knob that goes to 11?

07-11-2006, 19:29
Now that's a theme!

The only thing I miss are instruments. Give them power guitars or even chainguitars!

The dark milennium needs music!

Btw, darkseer, cool movie-thingy.

Thanks everybody. And about the guitars... Wait and see...

For those who are about to rock.....

I LOVE Eddie as the DP, just fits so nicely...

You gonna try and fit a Drummer Marine in as well perhaps??? ;)

11-11-2006, 16:49
Bandwidth usage is well within limits so I bring you...

Templars of Steel - Noise marines
Noise marines with sonic weapons. And a daemonic speaker spawn. (More on this later...)

Sonic blasters. As I said in the beginning, one of the purposes of the army was to bring back the guitar-looking sonic blasters. They took a lot of work to build. Basically they are made from plasticard with greenstuffed strings and a few bits. The speakers are daemon heads from the vehicle accessory sprue that have been cut in half and rebuilt with green stuff. The wires are guitar strings (What else could you use for a Heavy metal army...)

A headbanging marine. This might not be the greatest picture, though...

The blastmaster. If a sonic blaster is a guitar, then a blast master must be a... bass! And the marine has been gifted by Slaanesh with a mutated hand for some truely gifted playing.
Also notice the unit's champion on the right. He is trashing his sonic blaster against the speaker. This means it can no longer function as a sonic blaster but works perfectly as a Great weapon!

11-11-2006, 16:49
And here is the speaker. From the start of the army I knew that I wanted big speakers and amps with my marines. But for a long time I didn't know what to use them as in game terms. But then I got an idea about how failed roadies where sucked into the speakers as punishment for their imperfection. Soon the speakers became filled with souls and started to mutate and take a life of their own. The Daemonic speaker spawns were born!

I wanted them to look like giant mutated speakers with souls desperately trying to escape. A lot of inspiration were taken from the monolith in Hellraiser III. As they needed to be able to move I also took some inspiration from the Luggage (discworld) and gave them small feet. This is one of the spawns. Another is coming up later.

Another angle of the same spawn.

The Iron Maidens - Daemonette groupies
Every band needs groupies! Some of the few unconverted models in the army. I really like the models and didn't feel that they needed any work. I just added some hair on a few of them.

Some closeups.

11-11-2006, 16:50
The Twisted sisters - Daemonette groupies
It is kinda hard to see on this picture, the severed head is actually smiling.

That's all for now. Coming up next time... Iron maiden references and roadies!

11-11-2006, 16:56
This is too freaking metal, I'm ripping my eyes to out to show how much I like the pain!

Very nice painting I must add, and the little details give this army an awesome feel.

11-11-2006, 17:07
wow very nice conversions, love the guitars

11-11-2006, 17:57
In a truly epic, high-pitched wail that, holding the note for a good 20 minutes:-

I love its, I've played around with the same idea myself - but I always saw Noise Marines as being more Glam Metal - c'mon, the god of decadence and perverse pleasure is their patron?

11-11-2006, 18:01
@Philbrad: Just in case you are interested I have posted the setlist of the current Iron Maiden tour here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52357). A fan for 16+ years.

Cheers BLAZEXI, I shall be enjoying a night of music with the Maiden on December 12th at theNEC B'ham, rock out pardners!

Bulonicus - You need a LEMMY figure to complete this army. Its crying out for it. Love the rock-chick Daemonettes.

11-11-2006, 18:18
I've always wanted to do a metal-themed slaanesh army, but I don't have the skills for it. Great to see that someone has both the guts and the skills to do it.

Up the Irons!

11-11-2006, 18:23
Yay -- I've been waiting for an update. These are fantastic, well and truly living up to my hopes. I love the speaker "fluff" and its legs -- almost reminds me of Pratchett's luggage. Your color scheme is perfect too.

One thought, if anyone wants to make their own plasticard guitars:

When I want a long thin straight thing to use as a wire on a model, I heat a section of sprue (generally over a lighter or match) and gently pull* - as the sprue comes apart it makes a narrow string of plastic, and when it cools it's easy to cut. It's pretty easy to control the thickness of the string too, just by how much you pull.

I started out doing it to do the wires connecting wings on old biplane kits and suchlike, but found it works really well for things like radio antennae on miniatures. I'm certain it'd make for good guitar strings, and would probably be easier to work with than greenstuff.

* I get best results doing it vertically, so gravity doesn't make the wire sag.

11-11-2006, 19:41
Wow, you need to put some booze bottles as combat drugs. Than you could say that this army Rocks, Drinks and (judgeing by Daemonettes and Rhino passangers) you know what else:evilgrin:.

11-11-2006, 20:05

Obviously a bottle of Jack - for there is no more metal a drink known to exist.

Now, when are you going to do a Rob Halford version of Doomrider :p

11-11-2006, 21:18
Jagermeister is the drink of choice now. Higher ABV, I think.

Love this idea. Especially loving Eddie. Not going to the tour this year, but I can proudly say I saw them, for FREE, at Download 2003.

Jagermeister? Pah, Jager means nothing to me. If it wasnt supped in the back of tourbuses in '86 then it is too new-fangled to count :P How many band-homage shirts are there to Jager?

Reign in Blood
12-11-2006, 04:04
Those are figgin metal! Great work mate. Can't wait for anymore(?).

12-11-2006, 04:11
Love the idea, I especially like the fingers on the power fist armed champion, these are excellent conversions. One idea though, I saw a similar themed Slaanesh army a while ago. It had Elvis as it's commander, and a rhino with a walkman and speakers installed maybe you could put an ipod in a landraider, or something similar

12-11-2006, 12:06
fantastic army and great to see that someone has returned sonic blasters to what they should be - i tried myself for ages to figure out how to do it and this thread has given me the kick up the ass to do so myself. See you all at Earl's Court in December!

As for you Sanctus Mortis - how on earth did you get away without paying for download '03?! Great setlist - but the day was waaay to hot!

12-11-2006, 17:23
this army owns.

12-11-2006, 22:20
how cool is this army :D you sir rock

The Judge
12-11-2006, 22:37
Oh man, this army rocks unbelievably.

13-11-2006, 13:51
Strike while the iron is hot
Steel is strongest so say we all
And if we all were not brothers of metal would we fall? - NO! -
They tried to test our spirit
They tasted steel before we were done
Grinding their bones into the dust of the past
All blown away like a shot from a gun

I love it!

The painting and freehand is delightful, and your guitar wielding marines bring back memories of old.

Makes me want to go and listen to some Bolt Thrower...!

If you're not into metal, you are not my friend

Heavy metal or no metal at all whimps and posers leave the hall
Heavy metal or no metal at all whimps and posers I said
Leave the hall!

Jagermeister is the drink of choice now.
Jagermeister for Industrial Might :chrome:, not Metal Mayhem :skull:

Fantastic army you've got, absolutely loving the pics - even if that means waiting a week between doses! The speaker spawn is *******' awesome, as is the horned-powerfist and headbanging noise marine. Makes me want to go back and finish my plans for a KMFDM noise marine squad ...

13-11-2006, 18:06
this is quite possibly the best thing i've ever seen
loving eddie as a DP

13-11-2006, 20:11
i must say, that army is amazing! look the theme, and that rhino is fing sweet!

13-11-2006, 22:04
"I can't hear you BK Broiler!"
nice army!

14-11-2006, 10:35

wtf wtf wtf wtf

15-11-2006, 00:29
Utterly, utterly amazing army. Fantastic! Well done that man!

Funky Salad Man
15-11-2006, 12:17
holy hell, that is insane!

15-11-2006, 19:01
Thanks everybody!

I'm impressed by Photobuckets bandwidth capacity. It's still well within limits so I might just as well post the nex part...

PART III - More Troops!

Disposable Heroes - Roadies

OK, so we got the band, we got the mascot and we got the groupies. What more is needed? Roadies of course! Who else would set up the amps, carry the beer and shoot lascannon? In game terms they are still noise marines, but in terms of painting they have a blue chestplate instead of purple.

The roadie champ. I really like this model. The brand of the beer is... Chaosberg! "Sometimes the best beer in the universe"

The lascannon gunner and a "normal" roadie. The model on the right is propably my favourite model in the entire army. I don't know why but it is just something in his expression. He looks like he is really hung over, has to hurry to get the speaker he's carrying installed... and then some Imperialists tries to stop him and tell him that they play to loud! The look is propably more coincidence then me planning it but I still like it.

The Troopers - CC squad
A close combat squad. I wanted them to be very different from the chosen. The chosen have fancy, elaborate weapons and shiny stuff. Theese guys have improvised weapons and a more grittier look.

15-11-2006, 19:02
The champion and his hound. The enemy just told him that metal is dead and they should get a haircut. He answers with the finger. The advantage with powerfists are that gestures tend to look quite exaggerated and funny...

Close combat marines with improvised weapons. From left to right - A broken bottle, a torn up street sign (the corner of Acacia avenue and Rue morgue) and a baseball bat.

Doom sirens. This was an attempt to paint chrome SENMM. Allthough I'm not sure how well I succeeded with the chrome look, I still liked the look of it and kept it.

The icon. Painted to look like the cover of the Iron Maiden album "Live after death".

15-11-2006, 19:03
Rhino tour bus
Again, I wanted it to look different from the Chosen rhino. The extra armour is crudely welded om steel plates rather then manufactured extra armour. But it does have cool flames!

The top hatch. I noticed how Iron maiden covers were a lot harder to paint then Manowar ones.

The Noise marine version of the Iron Maiden logo. The other door has the tour dates but they look very similar to the chosen ones.

OK. That's all for now. Stay tuned for the final part sometime next week (or possibly this weekend).

15-11-2006, 19:29
Hahaha Its just so COOL! The iron maiden tank is gotta be my favourite!
They all look so cool! Its really comical too though, I like the one with the baseball bat. And the finger lifter!

15-11-2006, 20:09
More already?!

Love the baseball bat marine, and that lascannon is really quite nice. In fact, I've got the bitz, I might just thieve that idea completely ...

Amazing work all over, I quake with anticipation for what else you've got in store for us ...

- Salvage

15-11-2006, 21:06
Cool factor indeed rapidly rising!

I'm gonna say this again, your army rocks!

Hoping to see some more!

The glade wanderer

15-11-2006, 21:25
Superb work, this army gets better and better.

"Chaosberg" - inspired!

A very well executed army that looks cool, an excellent theme, and has humour whilst not looking comical. These guys are turning into one of my fave chaos armies ever. And more Iron Maiden references - class!

15-11-2006, 21:32
Hardly a project log, but good all the same.

15-11-2006, 21:35
The gods of Rock bow to you!
This is the koolest army i have ever seen. And i love it even more because youve done my Two FAvorite bands! (Manowar and Ironmaiden)

Love to see the rest.

15-11-2006, 22:37
Chaosberg, probably the best beer in the Eye of Terror!

Trooper Eddie with Chaos Jack, Roadsign, Life after Death. Make sure you post these pics for Maiden's Christmas Card contest (at their official website)!

Not strictly a Chrismas Card, but you may photoshop some metal greetings on it.

15-11-2006, 22:51
I love that signpost reference. I'm really like how you add in these subtle references among other, not-so subtle ones.

16-11-2006, 05:47
The champion and his hound. The enemy just told him that metal is dead and they should get a haircut. He answers with the finger.

Oh yeah!!!

Majestic. In scope. In design. In execution. In-credible.

I thought the noise marine guy with the big pink arm was James Hetfield. :D Yeah! Yeah-Yeah!

The guy with the bottle looks like Glen Danzig.

Actually, your sky-earth is really great. It reminds me of those crappy blue lights all the small clubs have. Now, if you could only make them change from blue to red over and over again really fast...(insert double base drum in the background).

Oh yeah, sigged.

Alex Under
16-11-2006, 14:07

Incredible... When I read "metal-themed army" I was thinking metal as in metallic... But when I saw that you really did mean true ********** Heavy Metal!!! WOW!!!!!!

Up the Irons!!! :D

16-11-2006, 14:59

this army is really trve

16-11-2006, 15:30

Nice theme, but why did it had to be manowar? ^^

16-11-2006, 19:21
dude you are a god! To Hell with Slaanesh, I'm gonna worship you.

Seriously though your painting is amazing. I wish that I could do freehand as well as you, oh well, give me time.

keep the photos coming and 'Rock On!' \m/

17-11-2006, 08:09
Of all the thousands of painted minis I have seen during countless hours on the web over the years, these are the best ever. I mean it. I have seen perfection, now nothing can amaze me anymore... I have to stab my eyes out! =)

17-11-2006, 22:34

Nice theme, but why did it had to be manowar? ^^

Coz when other bands play, ManowaR kills!

17-11-2006, 22:52
Dude you win just for the crate of carlsberg, awsome stuff :D.

19-11-2006, 20:26
Again, thanks everybody!

It's time for the final part.

Wheels of fire - Noise marine bikers
One thing I felt would fit well into a metal-themed army was Chaos space marine bikers. Not just Chaos space marines on bikes, but Chaos marine bikers. All the bikes are converted since I didn't like the original ones.

The champion. There are two things that I feel must be explained about this model. The first is the face. He is modelled to look like the warrior on the front of the Manowar covers. His face is always cloaked in shadow. This was my way to show that.
The other is the colour of his bike. It is painted with chrome SENMM. As I described earlier with the other chrome SENMM effects I don't really think I succeeded. But since it looks cool I kept it. On the model it becomes a little strange since the only surfaces you see from the front are ones that reflect the sky and therefore should be coloured blue. So it kinda looks like the whole bike is made of some blueish material. But... I liked the look and it certainly made him stand out. Also notice the Eddie/Slaanesh icon on the front of the bike.

And the daemonette behind him was a must.

The icon bearer and doom siren operator for the unit. The banner is a cover that was painted for the Seventh son... album, but was never used as a cover for one of the singles. (It is just shown in the booklet that comes with the CD and on the LP sleeve.) In my opinion it is one of the best Maiden covers so I decided to include it in the army anyway.

Two bikers. Notice the sonic blasters on the bikes.

19-11-2006, 20:26
More bikers. The one closest to the camera is giving the enemy the finger, even though it doesn't show so clearly on the picture.

Brothers of metal - Roadie havocs

The heavy roadies. Needed to bring down tanks.

Autocannons. One original (almost) and one home built.

Missile launchers. The one with the beer was originally intended to have the normal arm but it did not fit properly so I had to come up with another solution. And in the end it got so much better.

19-11-2006, 20:27
Another daemonic speaker spawn.

Another angle of the spawn.

And that's it! I hope you enjoyed the army. I thought about adding things to it but it will propably take a while before I do something more. During the time I built the army the rules changed from 3rd to 4th ed and suddenly the army did not perform the way I had planned on the battlefield. But it still recieved quite low "Army composition" scores on tournaments. Without going in too much on how the tournaments in Sweden works, it means that my opposition on tournaments mostly consisted of armies that were a lot more competative then this one that I had a hard time beating. If it is going to work properly it needs several changes.

But even if I don't play it that much I am still very glad that I built/painted it. It will be a "display army".

19-11-2006, 20:29
Amazing, gotta the love the manowar dude.

19-11-2006, 21:16
one of the best damn armies i have ever seen... its genious! really like all the conversions, and the painting is topclass

19-11-2006, 21:30
Can you give us a group shot,of yourfantastic army?

20-11-2006, 01:37
These are awesome, the banners are excuisite.... overal.... Ii just have to say I love them

20-11-2006, 15:49
Can you give us a group shot,of yourfantastic army?

OK. Here you go!

20-11-2006, 16:01
That's got to be one of the best armies I have ever seen. An original theme that WORKS, a fantastic paint job and brilliant converting skills. That, and it makes me chuckle. Armies that can do that well are always the best.

Well done good sir!

20-11-2006, 20:56
I DIG the bikers, I really think they're the best element of the army. They are done so well. And together with the rest.. Amazing, just amazing.
Now onto your Rammstein imperial guard :D

20-11-2006, 23:33
Amazing and a joy to see - i'm quite sad that you're finished!

21-11-2006, 00:33
Damn man now thats hardcore. I always wanted to do a slipknot/mudvayne/mushroomhead-ish choas army but there no way in hell i could do the banners justice to even try it.
I tip my hat to you sir

21-11-2006, 01:30
omg...that is just...wow i wish i could do that...congradulations...you should take them 2 tourneys & win best painted/converted whatevr...

21-11-2006, 06:11
Alright, I know you are done, but I do have one more suggestion.

If you could make a Powerslave-themed Thousand Sons Army (IE, paint the Rhinos with the cover, make the Mummy Eddie), that would be so *********** awesome I would love you forever.

I mean, I already love you forever, but dear *********** God, man.

21-11-2006, 06:35

Being in the same gaming club as Bulonicus, I think can answer for him (and I believe it was stated early in the thread): it won "Best Painted" in all four major tournaments here in Sweden the year it was 'on tour'... How it would fair in a GT we still want to know. :)

glowing in the dark
21-11-2006, 19:12
Unbelivable, speakers are the greatest.
Heh, a friend of mine started this very theme, slaaneshi metalheads and now i wonder if he'll continue!

Kenrick Dargoth
23-12-2006, 18:12
I really like the beer guy and that biker.
They own.

That army is just great, and unstopable.
Because METAL can't be stopped

//A short moment of disbelief in my loyalist army.;)

Hello to all and merry christmas!

23-12-2006, 19:43
Painting and conversions are great. But that theme... you must be insane :D

24-12-2006, 15:47
Wow .... This is brilliant. I love the nice little conversions, the tour dates, the Spawns, the sweet paint jobs, and even the NMM is appropriate on these guys.
*applause*

Now do a Kelly Family-themed army. It's noise, so it should be possible. :p

24-12-2006, 16:06
This is the single coolest themed army I ever saw - congratulations.

The Laughing God
24-12-2006, 16:43
Very cool army. That's an awesome theme, my favorite is the Speaker it looks great.

24-12-2006, 18:00
You, and that kickass army of yours, are made of awesome and win. It kicks so much ass that they have to import cheap foregin ass to meet the demand of ass being kicked.

24-12-2006, 19:26

...I love the album covers on the banners and Rhinos...:cries: :cries: :cries: ...so beautiful...

24-12-2006, 19:50
\m/ Pure Ownage! \m/

I like the beer carrier and speaker spawn most. :D

Most excellent.

This army is just incredible! I've always wanted to see a metal-themed Slaanesh army, but this just blew me away. You, sir, are a god.

First off, fellow EC player here starting on a two year "display" army quest myself, also trying NMM, and bloody hell does this give me some motivation knowing it can be done and what it could look like. I was dispairing at a rate of 1 model per 3 months there.

Secondly I'll say, much against the grain I'm afraid, that I've never liked either metal or all female cliche themes for slaanesh forces but, and it's a big but, this is one of only two that I think are simply too fantastic to fault. (The other being a Microart Studio female EC force commission).

The coversions are superb, the painting is fantastic and the freehands are downright amazing. Plus the theme is carried throughout the force, and because it's done to such a high standard it works without being tacky at all, even for a cynic like me! (I feel forces like these have to be done brilliantly to work or they just look silly, which this most certainly does not)

Yet there is one glaring thing that could make it better for me personally... some Arch Enemy covers! :D ;) Consider me converted, in those immortal words. "This Rocks!"

I stumbled onto this thread from your FTW entry and this is just AMAZING stuff. Your attention to detail here is superb - but more than that you had the gonads to continue with this comedic theme all the way up to the end.

Absolutely amazing stuff man - well done! The speakers are my favorite I think... no wait... the bikers... no wait... the Chaosberg beer... no wait...

It's all just too much fun!
