What was your first online game experience?

Mine was Duke3D on direct connection with my 28.8 modem way back.

Phantasy Star Online on the Dreamcast was my first. Loved it apart from newbies having barely played the single player mode jumping straight into the online mode expecting you o save their butts all the time. AND expecting you to hand over high level items they cant even use. AND ignoring all advice you give them especally "dont use the big teleporter untill we all get there."

Also there was once a group of Germans who took an irational dislike to me calling me a "lazy f@$ker" for no apparent reason. They barelly knew the english for hello but they certainlly knew many four letter expletives.

Starcraft, I still remember the strangeness of playing against some totally random stranger in some far corner of the world.

I had played Baldurs gate (this may have been after starcraft) , diablo and warcraft II over a LAN before that.

Diablo 2, and only a year ago. A real late comer to the online gaming arena, am I, and still getting used to it, really.

For me it was either Diablo or Quake. Both were right around the same time (within days of each other), so I'm not sure which I played first.

Halflife was my first online gaming.

Had some great LAN games of AvP and various other things.

Yeah I suck.

BIGGAMEHUNTERS$$$$$$$$ games were always the funniest, especially if there was some sort of no rush limit. Cruelty to noobs is so rewarding when they obviously need the practice.

Diablo. That was actually the only game I played online. And only a little, at that.

Online would have to be Quake when it was ported to the Amiga.

Before that I did a lot of serial-linked gaming playing Knights of the Sky, AlienBreed3D and SuperSkidmarks!!! :D

Duke Nukem 3D over modem, if that counts.

Jedi Knight over a 28.8 connection, I think. I had Diablo for longer, but I know I never played it online untill I got a cable connection, shortly thereafter.

Unreal Tournament (the original), on ISDN (I can't recall the speed on that one).
I remember having a 56k6 (?) modem before that, but I never used it to play a game online, in fear of the phone bill.

Nowadays I'm on ADSL 3200/768 but the only online game I play occasionally is Delta Force: Black Hawk Down.

...

Oh, and no matter what the connection, I suck. :p

hehe, I know the feeling. That was back in the days of "lag-shooting"...I always sucked at mechwarrior 2.

..."lag-shooting"...
Well, if one looks at the constant whines like "LAG!", "LAGASS!" and "N00BLAGGER!" that's still an issue, even with 10 Mbit connections.

If there's one thing that's pissing me of, it's the constant whining that goes on in servers.
Occasionally, there'll be some fun games with some good people, but not often... Sad, really.

>>>>>Ah, I'm pretty sure it was StarCraft...what a classic. Hell, sometimes myself and some buddies pull out a LAN party (dont laugh, its fun!) and we break out the StarCraft for then too, with Tribes2, ane more.

heh, dont play medal of honour: pacific assault online.
they seem to frown on spawn-point killings...
oh how you could hold up an invasion game by sitting in a bush, especially that beach assault level
and to think, one grenade in my vague direction would put me down easy.

Unreal Tournament (the original), on ISDN (I can't recall the speed on that one).

Same here, UT goty.
I've owned a lot of games that could be played online (mech2, various quakes, etc..) but I never played any games online until we got a dsl net connection.

We've always had problems with anything over 56K where I live, and so despite getting my first modem in '98, it was relatively recently I tried a game on the net.

DisruptorX

hahaha, you do not know lag untill you play on a slower connection than 56k. You actually had to aim where your enemies were going to be in a few seconds, rather than where you saw them as being now. :(

Call of Duty. I'd still say it's one of the best online shooters.

Red Alert 1, with a direct modem connection to my friend on the other side of the village. At least that's the earliest I can remember. It was great fun. There might have been an AI player in as well, I can't remember if you could do that or not.

Diablo back in 2000. Those were good times, I actually prefer Diablo to Diablo2, the lack of speed difference in character classes meant you tended to stick together, move at a more 'leisurely' pace (if wading through oceans of gore in hell can be considered leisurly) and generally spent a good deal of time chatting to each other.

I think after that it was Unreal Tournament, which I was only avergae at but enjoyed.
