View Full Version : My First Company

14-11-2006, 20:42
Hello, So I have set myself on the task of creating a first company of Space Marines. I have been aquiring models over the past couple of weeks and ready to begin. I hope you all enjoy this as much as I do and even when I'm kicking myself for doing this project I hope you enjoy that too.

My first step was getting 100 terminators. I already had 25, through many trades and one purchase I got all 100 of them. I also was able to get my hands on 3 Land Raider Crusaders and 1 Landraider. I am still trying to get more them without having to buy them.

Then I set out to strip the models I received, remove the bases, take the arms off the bodies. I wanted everything to be as clean a state as possible. It took a fair amount of time to strip about 70 terminators, and my hands were acheing once it was over, but its over. I have my working carrying case all set, with my terminator bodies and arms seperated.

The next step was bases. I have been thinking about this for awhile and decided upon a simple base, something that will be easy to paint but still look nice. I went with some stone tile textured plasticard. It shouldn't be too time consuming to paint (i hope so). I created my bases by cutting the plasticard into circles. I already had some 45mm hard plastic circles from an old project so these provided the main base, then some putty to give it a little height, then the textured card. Then I set my mold and let it dry overnight.

So this is the beginning. I hope you stick around to see me fight the good fight and complete my First Company.
I will be posting images later tonight and throughout the process. Cheers.

Here are the terminators, stripped and armless. Waiting for the painting factory to open.

14-11-2006, 21:42
you sir, are insanse. I like it :D

sounds like a great project, but which chapter? Please don't do deathwing, it's 1st company, which although looks great, is the most common type of 1st company.

14-11-2006, 21:50
Yeah, what Chapter, don't do Ultrasmurfs either, way to boring lol, do a more obscure chapter.

14-11-2006, 21:54
Well, I have been reading the Horus Heresy books and my first thought was to make Justaerin from the Sons of Horus. So that would be black overall.

The only gripe I have with that is, if I do a preheresy army then I wouldn't really want to have crusaders and assault cannons because they weren't around then. But frankly those are two of the things I love about terminators. So I think I will paint them black and maybe go with Black Templars or my own chapter that is painted black.

14-11-2006, 22:04
I suppose you are going all Termie? Cause a first company also has the veteran squads to add 'variety'.

What about Imperial Fist? Codex Chapter, are not nearly dessimated... but Yellow is a hard color to paint.

Salamanders have potential and could have some cool scale effects.

14-11-2006, 22:05
top 3 (imo); salamanders, crimson fists and raven guard (that's if you want a black marine army).

14-11-2006, 22:11

My first co. is only aiming for 30-40 + 3 Dreads + 2 land raiders!

14-11-2006, 22:12
In my opinion it would be odd ot have a full 100 Crimson Fist - unless you are doing a pre Ork invasion army. Not as cool in my opinion as the post Ork invasion Crimson fist.

14-11-2006, 22:14
Interesting idea - I'll be watching this Log very closely.

Well, not that closely. I don't really want to start a 1st Co. myself!

14-11-2006, 22:46
top 3 (imo); salamanders, crimson fists and raven guard (that's if you want a black marine army).

I'm positive I want to paint them black. I didn't know that these legions' terminators were black. I have a little while to decide on the chapter, maybe someone could post or link to some fluff about the salamanders or the raven guard. The only thing I know about salamanders is that they have more tech than other legions and tend to use more flamers, and I don't know anything about raven guard.

14-11-2006, 22:58
oops, my mistake. Only the raven guard have black armour. I'll find a link for the GW space marine info.

15-11-2006, 03:40
picks yet? i might try this if my sainity starts to slip even further into the abyss! Do something like blk templars if you want black, as they have whole loads of cool icons and stuff to put on the termis

15-11-2006, 04:11
my camera is not working right now, I'll try and get pics up soon.

15-11-2006, 18:28
why not iron hands? they're black armoured AND you can convert them with a load of bionics if you wish :D

15-11-2006, 18:40
You could also do Black Consuls (if you want to go with succesors) or Angels of Vengeance (since I assume you'll use deathwing rules anyway)

16-11-2006, 23:19
I added a picture of my termies to the beginning of the log.

I think am going to be making this company Raven Guard (thanks Hired Sword for mentioning it). I looked up some of their fluff and it seems good to me. I won't have tons of vehicles, I have a couple drop pods I could use and almost all my termies are the older models. Seems fitting.

Also, I am considering adding a couple veteran squads. If I replace 20 terminators with veterans that should fit well. And an added bonus is that those spare 20 terminators can be made for my chaos army. I also have two medium sized scout squads that will be painted in to fit the army so I can play it either with Deathwing rules or with Codex marine rules.

Cheers and thanks for the advice. I'll hopefully get my first squad made and painted this weekend, and get pics up for you all to see.

16-11-2006, 23:24
Shartma is my little brother (literally).

Now that I read the previous posts, I have to go with Iron hands. You love bionics and converting. And they're painted black. What could be a better combo? I know that you aren't planning on actually taking advantage of the one cool thing Raven Guard has, which is Shrike's Wing. So go with the bionics.

Plus, they fit really well with your other BIG secret project, concept-wise.

17-11-2006, 09:40
clever idea - i can imagine your opponents face when you deploy more terminators than he has hairs! jeez, if youre using deathwing rules, im scared.

19-11-2006, 00:30
Hey everyone. I finally got around to painting a unit. I had to organize all my men, sorted by unit and clipped all the slottabar off them. I also started casting my bases, the resin I got isn't very good but it'll do for now. When its empty I am definitly switching to Micro-Mark brand (much better quality and quicker).

So here is my first unit, one of the heavy units with Missile Launchers. I nailed down my color scheme but if anyone has suggestions on things I could change I'm still open to them.
Here is the whole unit. (I apologize ahead of time, the pictures aren't the best)
and the sergeant
and the others

Let me know what you think.

20-11-2006, 00:13
Looking good! Your painting is improving.

One more layer of highlights..... one more and they'll really pop. Bleached bone + White on the edges, light grey on the black.

Nice job!

20-11-2006, 00:50
IMO, the Raven Guard idea won't really work. Raven Guard are all about stealth and speed, something terminators don't have. I personally would see they're First Company be a bunch of Shrike's wing-like guys, with only a smattering of termies to handle the toughest baddies.

The only black army I can really think of whose entire first company would be terminators would be the Iron Hands. They have a very large amount of terminators, and lots o' dread. Fit what you want perfectly.

I don't think you'll need to change much on the guys you've got done now, except for maybe removing the deathwing logo on the shoulders (pretty sure thats the deathwing logo) and painting on an Iron Hands logo (just a big cog).

Hope that helps, and hope I'm not too late!

So I have this week off for the Holiday and will be making the most of it by having a paint-a-thon. Here's what I did today.
I made and painted a set of 20 bases. Then I set to work on my first dreadnaught. Here is the end result. He will have a banner but I'm working on what that will look like. If anyone has any ideas for that I would appreciate it.
Heres the dread.
I'm pretty happy with it, I may go back do a few more highlights though. I also made my first greenstuff mold, and it worked! The Crux Terminatus on the dreads shin is molded off of a terminator shoulder pad. Cheers.

22-11-2006, 06:23
The tile stuff you use is quite thick is it not? I like the tiles though. Looks like a good army. Might want to ink wash the brown stuff though. With a mix like:
chestnut/water 1:1 would look good IMO. Good work, keep it coming!

22-11-2006, 14:47
Thanks Zodiac, I'll try the wash.

My bases were made from textured Plasticard mounted on a precut circle, then added greenstuff in to make them taller. After they were made I cast them so they are all one piece of plastic. They end up being just slightly taller than a GW base. Anywho, I just woke up and after I eat its back to "The Thon", up next is my second unit of termies. Cya soon.

22-11-2006, 15:08
I was lookin through the GW chapter gallery and your scheme it almost exactly like the Mortifactors. They're a nice obscure chapter if you want.
Great job painitng and i love the bases! Cant wait for more!

23-11-2006, 03:06
Here is unit #2. I started doing another layer of highlights and I think it really adds a lot to the minis. Not sure if it will come across in the pictures but whatev. Anywho, here they are.
and the serg
I'm not sure what to decide as for a chapter. It might be good to go more obscure or create my own but its not a big deal now. I will be making all the banners and chapter symbols for shoulder pads later, for now the mission is painting.
Cheers and Happy Thanksgiving Warseer Folks!

Looking pretty sweet.

I second the idea of doing Mortifactors.

03-01-2007, 20:30
I like...I'd love to see more...I also join with the post above me.^^^^

03-01-2007, 20:45
Really like your scheme, and cool that you're stripping out and painting up older models. While I think your thick highlights look good on the termies, they're a bit overkill on the dread IMO. On the other hand, I think your power weapons are quite nice and look forward to more on the other characters ...

Nice work, keep them coming!

thanks. This project is very slow moving atm. Over my holiday I was able to paint all 62 remaining H2H arms for the regular terminators and the assault terminators. I have the storm bolter and heavy weapon arms primed and ready to go, I think this weekend may be when I get to them.

I am finding that painting the arms seperate is longer but I like the process more. I am able to concentrate on the detail of each arm, and through repetition I get better. The storm bolter arms should go smoothly, and I know I see a difference between the first termies I painted and this last set of arms I finished.

Cheers, and hopefully I will get more done to show soon.

17-01-2007, 04:06
Not sure if anyone is following this but I finished painting the gun arms for all the terminators and also have a assault jump marine unit painted up. Once I get my hands on a camera I'll put some pictures. soooo many terminators, ugh.

Looking forawrd to an update! Would love to do a first company but all those termies woudl kill me!

26-01-2007, 14:31
This is sweet. Ive always envyed anyone with more thab 40 terminaters, but i have a question. What are your command figures going to be? I would expescilly love to see those painted, and i also think the highlights are great, keep it up!

26-01-2007, 14:42
Thanks Sparda. Well I have just about every terminator command model and plan on using all of them. The army overall will have 2 Chaplains, 2 Librarians, and 3 Commanders. This way there is one of high rank and one of lower rank, and I figured the command should be spread out through out the company. And I have several special character models but I think they will just be sergeants for units, like Capt. Lysander is going to be serg for a unit of assault terminators. A chaplain is on the painting plate right now along with a 5 man unit. So hopefully I'll get pictures soon.

Ok so my thread is changing. I am duanted by the task of painting so many ******* terminators. My will is still here but I have found that I need distractions. So this log will now encompass all of my armies and I'll try to keep it up to date as I make progress on any of them.

Here is my list of things to do (mainly for my benefit, so I can strike them off as I finish them) Some of these aren't complete armies but rather just what I have, other units may be added later.

Ok time to update some images. Here is what I've finished recently. Sorry for the lack of updates I rarely have a camera handy.

Fourth unit of Terminators. 4 Lightning Claws and a heavy flamer/p.fist

Old Timey Librarian

14-02-2007, 16:18
assault marine unit

14-02-2007, 16:20
and one other thing. I also made 8 genestealers but the images didn't come out well because they are mostly black, mostly.

27-02-2007, 14:58
I traded my Tau for my brother's empire stuff and have been going to town for the past few days. I'm making it a Chinese/Japanese mix, everyone keeps calling it Cathayan but whatever.
I'm planning on having a general on a griffon. So here is the griffon, I still have to paint the guy.
This was a lot of fun to make. I bought the model for $5 in Chinatown. Then used the dremel to remove it from its original base and had a serious time cutting and sanding down the bottom of the model. It was on this weird cloudlike thing, so I got rid of that and greenstuffed the missing detail.

11-04-2007, 17:17
These genestealers; do the mostly come at night, mostly, per chance?

Looking good so far. Keep going!
