View Full Version : Fenriz Finally Paints His Guard

Fenriz

Yes, im finally getting round to painting the guard army iv long been threatening to do. :D

Actually painting my own models too, spent the last few months painting my mates Dark Angel army, because hes a lazy git and i wont ever get a game otherwise.

So i sat and started painting my test mini for the army last night.

Im intending to paint it (and more importantly buy it) in 500pt incriments. A squad, box, or blister at a time, once every few weeks (as im rediculously poor right now, and disposable income isnt at a premium). Will eventually be 1500pts in total ideally. Going to log my progress here, so you can give me feedback and give me a kick up the **** if im slacking - haha.

Right, onto the model. The flesh, flak jacket, and fatigues are done. And dispite the picture being flattering, i havent started highlighting the black yet.

The body armour, helmet, and weapons will be black, as well as certain other details. All webbing, pouches, and straps will be dark brown. Probably scorched brown highlighted up to bestial at the brightest. Still undecided on the boots, either black or brown.

Picture:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v680/rage_undimmed/DSC02946.jpg

Picture was taken using my cam phone, as my DSLR is charging at the moment (was taking photos at a gig last night). And ill be switching hosting to my photobucket account as soon as theyve finished maintainance later today.

(For anyone whos wondering, the models sat between the Phantasm Collectors Edition Sphere DVD boxed set, and Transformers Season 1 DVD set. Know it looks a little odd in the picture. Haha.)

Opinions and comments are very welcome. :)

This is an up to date photo of the army, will be updating this as i do more:

I like it very much, but I do not like the red coat, maybe a greatcoat-ish colour? Like dark grey or dark brown.

Fenriz
17-11-2006, 12:27
I wanted to use the red, as theyre a life company for a member of the Ordo Hereticus. Itl tie them to his retinue (which ill finish painting one day), and all the guard wil bear the Inquisitorial Seal on their right shoulder guard. Ill post the fluff for that soon and add it to the thread.

Itl look pretty good en-masse i think. The red is much darker in real life, the photo bleached it out a little. The mix is crimson gore, slowly highlighting with increased amounts of ruby red, with a final highlight mix of 70:30 ruby red and fiery orange (yes, i have some very old Citadel paints - but theyre superior to the new ones.) :)

Army list for the first 500 points is here. (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1080790&postcount=9) :)

It looks good, but the camo and the red don't really fit together. I'd recommend either using only the red, or only the camo. (Red being favorite, as that red is simply beautiful:) )

This. But I prefer the camo.

I like the red. It's definitely not your usual Cadian scheme and I look forward to seeing more.

looking good, similar to how i've painted a couple of guardsmen.

Yeah, i took some inspiration from how you'd painted the red on those actually. Aimed for it to be slightly darker though, shame the pic doesnt show that. Thanks. :)

The camo pattern is based on the PSD Digital urban camo the Jordanians use. Came up when i went and did some research on urban camo online (my google-fu was strong). :p

Thanks for the comments so far guys. :)

Todays progress:

Put together another 7 bog-standard grunts, and trimmed them all, etc.

Undercoated them black, and tidied up any bits id missed, plus a really thin coat of black paint to give a nice even surface.

Started to paint the flesh, but gave up after id done three, as the light got too bad and i havent invested in a daylight bulb yet.

Pic:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v680/rage_undimmed/Other/Warhammer/Guardsman2.jpg

Sorry for the abysmal photo, again on the cam-phone under terrible lighting conditions. But you get the general idea. Take a better picture tomorrow.

Have to get another box of Cadians this weekend, as i want to tackle the grunts first, then do the special/heavy weapons and the squad leaders/characters after. And then finally the chimera. Twenty-three lasgun armed guys in this first chunk of the army, and i want to get those out of the way first.

Hopefully get the test model finished this weekend, and maybe all the flesh on the remaining seven guys as well. Doubt ill get further, as i have a gig to go to on sunday, and im LAN'ing after 4 tomorrow. Have to see.

You must really hate that lazy swine ;) I see you put my red paints to good use!
I'm liking it Fenriz, like the camo scheme I feel that the red jacket pulls them out as =][= troops over normal guard.

Yeah, hes a lazy student bum. And he needs to sort out his Battle For Skull pass set if he wants his Goblin army painting. ;)

Deans in now for gaming, with his nancy Bretonnians. :p

And Galla says hello and sends you kisses. Hahaha!

And yes indeed, going to have to invest in some Coat De Arms stuff to colour match now though... Bah.

Sadly to say, i got absolutely zero done in the last two days.

Was LAN'ing at my mates with 7 other people yesterday playing Unreal Tournament 2004, Quake 4 and Dawn Of War. Pretty much played all day and evening (10:30am - 11:00pm), so nothing got done.

And today i was in london by mid-day for the Slayer gig and didnt get in till about an hour ago (roughly 3am).

Endevour to make up for it tomorrow though, for now i need copious amounts of sleep.

*Apologies and suchlike* :p

My opinion on your Guard is:

1. I like the face of your trooper. Nicely painted in all detail. Looks awesome.

2. I also like the army urban camo pants he wears. The camouflage is looking quite realistic.

3. BUT (there is always a BUT:D ) I absolutly DO NOT like the red jacket he is wearing. I mean, apologize for it, but red?? Why camoflage myself with urban colours and wear a bright red jacket over it making myself almost loudly cryin' at my enemies "Shoot me" :wtf: ? Sorry just my unqualified opinion :D

Fenriz
24-11-2006, 11:00
True, very true.

But theyre Inquisitiorial life company troopers. The red Jackets are meant as both an honour to the company and to instill fear into the segmentum populous. If these guys rock up in their drop ships, you know someones done wrong and are in for an ****-kicking. :D Ill see how it works out en masse, the worst that could happen is i repaint them in dark greys.

Anyway, this weeks been slow. Managed to get all the flesh painted on them, pics to come as soon as my camera starts co-operating with my PC (Damn things refusing to see the USB connection at the moment, need to take it apart and check all the connections.).

Monday was spent recovering from The Unholy Alliance gig, and tuesday was busy with working stuff. Wednesday was spent with my GF, and yesterday morning i was ill. So i only got any serious painting done last night. Planning on doing at least the basecoats on the guardsmens jackets this afternoon.

Excuses excuses... Haha.

Opinions as always welcome (much as they can be made on such abysmal progress... ).

looks good fenriz, that camo is very realistic. I would've said that the red is too light but then i read that the camera bleached the colours so i'll wait til you have a better photo up before i comment on that.

24-11-2006, 21:21
Yeah the camo just makes no sense with the red jacket. Keep the red... it's fluffy. But I'd suggest a single color pant.

As said.. the camo is VERY nice.. it just makes zero sense with a bright red coat.

Creep
24-11-2006, 22:43
I'm going to have to agree with the rest of the people here, the red and camo doesnt make sense at all.

But I love it. Keep it. Looks awesome...maybe paint their armor Camo too, leaving only the overcoat red? Kind of like the Inquisitors men are semi-trying to blend in.

Give them urban bases to show they are in an urban environment, to make the Camo make sense.

P.S- In desert storm, and currently, the US army had Green Forest Camo vests on top of Desert BDU's...doesnt make much sense, does it? If they US Army does it, why not the Inquisition?

Got more done today too! Really getting on with it now.

Got the camo done on the other 7, and all the webbing, canteens, ammo pouches, knife scabbards, and belts done. As well as the brown parts of the boots. Just the metal details and armour highlights to do now. As well as the imperial eagles, and the shoulderguard details, which ill be freehanding.

Terrible pic as usual:

Nice start to your Guard, Fenriz. I love the colour scheme, the red looks good, but I particulalry like the urban camouflage on their trousers, that looks awesome.

Fenriz
29-11-2006, 19:58
;1109615']Good luck. How did you paint the skin tone?

Started with a Elf Flesh base, in a couple of thin coats, then a flesh wash. From there, a 50:50 mix of dwarf flesh and bronzed flesh and added elf flesh to the mix in increasing amounts to highlight. I

m still not totally happy with it, and may experiment with some other ways of doing it. After all, its the guard; so differing skin tone within the army shouldnt matter too much, might even add to the effect.

Nice start to your Guard, Fenriz. I love the colour scheme, the red looks good, but I particulalry like the urban camouflage on their trousers, that looks awesome.

When are you going to base them, and what with?

Fenriz
21-06-2007, 18:42
Thanks! :)

I was a bit worried to begin with about how these boys would work en masse. But thankfully they look pretty good.

As for basing ill probably do it all in one go when iv painted all the infantry and the sentinels im doing. Will be urban style, with rubble, ash, and earth. Will probably do the base rims with Dark Flesh so they dont look too out of place on a "green" table.

Any other suggestions? :)

About half way through two of my heavy weapons teams for my platoon squads. Done the jackets, camo fatigues, boots/belts/bags/webbing, and the flesh.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v680/rage_undimmed/HvyWpnTeam1.jpg

Got to highlight all the armour and weapon casings. Then its the metals, and the small details.

Maybe have them done to the same stage as the rest of my army by the end of tomorrow, as im too tired to do anymore painting tonight. This lazy squig needs some downtime. :p

Im glad too, i was tempted on a few occasions (all the other players i know here think im mental for doing the camo), but its bearing fruit now, which im so glad of.

As for the bases im going with an urban style. Rubble, ash, broken bricks, small walls, razorwire, earth, and assorted other battleground ditritus. Doing the base rims with Dark Flesh so i can use them on most boards. Thanks for the kind words and the support. :)

a good way of doing urban bases is, large sand, chopped up sprue, little stones and stuff, glue it on, then paint it codex grey, heavly wash with scorched brown/chaos black (1:2) then drybrush codex, codex/fortress, fortress, white. it looks really good. get some tans and stuff in too so it looks like actual 'stuff' not just grey.

the HB teams are very cool, keep going !

And this is going to be no help whatsoever, but basicly i painted the midtone as the base of the fatigues, then put the lighttone in random splodges, then put the darktone in between while leaving the midtone showing.

Just study camo patterns and attempt to emulate it. The rest is just practice. I can do a set of camo fatigues in about 10minutes in that method.

Though that said i batch paint in 3's or 4's so they take about 45minutes combined.

Give us a hint on how your tanks are going to turn out? I like the different colorcombo youre using, and I'm anxious to see just how it will translate to the vehicles.

Btw I like that your models are very clean and crisp. Make sure your bases dont take away too much attention from the clean and nice models!

This is my likely scheme:

http://uk.games-workshop.com/imperialguard/tank-camo/images/tank10-sm.jpg

To tie it in with the inquisitorial theme im having the right hand turret plate in red with white inquisitorial markings. Im looking to include freehand murals on the front left of the track armour, individual to each tank and relevant to their names.

These are the tank names iv proposed so far:

Leman Russ - Indominable Spirit
Leman Russ Demolisher - His Will
Basilisk - Divine Judgement
Hellhound - Wrath Of Terra
Chimera - Gauntlet Of Iron

Opinions on those are welcome. And thanks for the kind comments and the support. :)

And this is going to be no help whatsoever, but basicly i painted the midtone as the base of the fatigues, then put the lighttone in random splodges, then put the darktone in between while leaving the midtone showing.

Just study camo patterns and attempt to emulate it. The rest is just practice. I can do a set of camo fatigues in about 10minutes in that method.

actually, that should help. thanks, i think i'll try it tommorow when i have some daylight.

is tank camo the same way?

Glad i could help!

And no, im looking to do the tanks with an airbrush. Im doing the whole lot from forgeworld, so i want to make them look pretty special. Ill be posting pics and probably a tuitorial when i get round to starting them. Want to do all the infantry first (im a treadhead at heart - save the best to last. ;)).

Actually my Russ' arent going to have sponsons. But i was thinking along those lines if they did. If i get the Lucius Baneblade im hankering after, i may sort out some red on the sponsons on that. Thanks. :)

Will ideally get most of these 10 guys done to the same point as the rest of the army by this time next week. *crosses fingers* :p

hi Fenriz, i've mocked up a base, for you're approval :)

bit of razorwire, black, scorched brown, fortress grey, codex grey, migdark mud, migold rust, migstandard rust, migbrick dust.

you don't necessarily have all this on one base it's just all the stuff i could think of on one 25mm.

07-07-2007, 22:32
Yeah, theyre getting based. Theyre not as yet because i was still deciding on a scheme and also have a horrible habit of putting it off as its possibly the least enjoyable part of the painting experience for me.

As for the method:

Im going with an urban style. Rubble, ash, broken bricks, small walls, razorwire, earth, and assorted other battleground ditritus. Doing the base rims with Dark Flesh so i can use them on most boards.

Thanks for the comment by the way. Ill dig out a marine to do a test sometime this week. :)

As for markings, right pad gets the Inquisitorial =I=, and the left gets their platoon number, a skull, then their squad number. Having a small army badge style motif on the right hand side of their helmets. Will do a more elaborate design on the tanks.

And yeah, thats my trade. And youre not wrong, it took a goodly while before i got my hand steady, but now it never shakes. Good for painting! :D

Then i may look at tanks. At least the chimera for the armoured fist unit. Problem is im broke right now, and even the chimera requires forgeworld parts and some converting.

Will get something done soon though, maybe my sentinels if i have enough money in the coming week or two.

Thanks for all the support so far guys, and for the inspiring comments.

Been very busy doing other non-hobby related things of late, so the Guard have been neglected a fair bit.

But im now getting some unit markings done on the models so far painted.

At the moment im doing their Inquisitorial Seals on their right shoulderguard, so far iv done a platoon HQ and a single squad. Heres a pic of the completed seals on the platoon HQ:

Order of business today is to get 2 further squads seals done:

Watching Fracture as i do it. (Good film!) :D

As an aside, has anyone had problems with their Logitec keyboards and mice lately? Iv had 2 die on me in the last 3 months (hense ghetto keyboard and mouse). Im getting pretty annoyed at going in for replacements, especially as i paid over 90 for the keyboard and mouse. I may choose another brand, but it does upset me because till now Logitec have been very good.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v680/rage_undimmed/DSC00018.jpg

Not the most flattering of photos, but far better than those previous.

Unit markings are thus:

Inquisitorial Seal on right shoulderguard to denote membership to personal Inquisitorial life company.

Markings on the left shoulderguard stand for:

Platoon Number --> Skull --> Squad Number.

Im thinking of adding some extra stuff for my sergeants. Ill definitely be going back later and adding a laurel wreath from the Empire Knight sprue to their right shoulderguard over the =I= symbol.

All comments are of course welcome and appreciated.

Thanks for looking guys.

My goodness, iv neglected this. Guard have been on a go-slow for a little while now as iv been skint.

But good news, its on its way again.

First things first, an army shot of the work so far:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v680/rage_undimmed/DSC_0056.jpg

All the unit markings are done on the lot of them, and all the gunshields that needed doing are done. I also finally got hold of some razorwire, so along with my sand, bitsbox, and some plasticard, im ready to begin basing. :D

Finished the greenstuff work on my sniper, and bought his two friends as well. Work has started on the 3 spotters for the teams, ill post up a photo when theres more to show. Lots of greenstuff sculpting for cloaks for those as well. Based onthe standard cadians, theyre going to have squad support weapon style lasguns and spotting equipment too. Looking forward to getting them done.

Also bought my techpriest engineseer for the army, which iv begun to paint. So far the armour and metallics is about 80% done on him. And iv started the face. Long way to go on him, including the freehand work on his robes. Hopefully have him done by the end of the weekend.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v680/rage_undimmed/DSC_0058.jpg

Thanks for the encouragement and kind words guys. Always nice to get a pat on the back, spurs you on to do more.

And not to disappoint (i hope), i finished my Enginseer. :)

He still needs basing, but im planning on sitting down this week and doing the army all in one go over a few nights.

Iv gone a bit more understated with the freehand, i was planning a huge admech symbol on his back similar to my warriorpriests cloak if any of you saw that before (i can find a photo if need be). But once id started it, it looked out of place on the model. So i just went with the simple cogtooth trim.

Anyway, to the picture:

Adding bardbed wire, smashed tile, bricks, bits of re-bar, skulls, bullet casings, girders, etc. to the bases in smatterings so they have character. But not too much that it detracts.

All in greys, with browns added in as well. Few bases may have static scorched grass on in places. Thinking of trying to sculpt some household objects out of greenstuff too. Like broken cups, kids toys, smashed bits of furnature, that kind of thing.

Base rims are going to be black.

Now paint your marines you lazy sod! ;)

Triple post it seems... Haha.

Well, painted the skin and faces, as well as painted and shaded all of the primary colour on the cloaks.

Done the camo pattern on one of them now, im pretty happy with how it looks. :)

The snipers are starting to look good - and I like the idea behind this army. In particular, I like how the 'idea' determines how it's painted too, which is cool.
Looking forward to more.

Id love to say its taken no time at all, but id be lying.

I suppose in tems of actual painting time its been about 4 months work, perhaps 5. But i actually started it about 18months ago, iv neglected it a lot in places when life got in the way (or when money ran out).

Thanks for the kind comment. :)

Im sure i can do. :)

Which specific camo though? The guard fatigues, or the snipers cloaks? :)

And for those who are interested in whats distracting me from my guard today, i present a WIP of my vampire im painting for tomorrows painting competition:

Silver is sort of done on the barding, though is going to get highlighted. Theres going to be freehand on the other side too. Gold is basecoated and iv begun glazing and shading. Long long way to go, can see myself pulling an allnighter at the rate.

Comments of course are welcome. :)

Hi Fenriz, love the army by the way. It's ace. Quick question for you. How do you prepare the resin bits for your Cadians? Do you pin them or just rely on super glue alone? The reason I ask is, I've just bought some Renegade bits. It's the first time I've used resin components and wanted to be safe.

Fenriz
18-03-2008, 16:28
Actually, i havent used any of the resin parts yet for my Cadians. But in all of my previous Forgeworld pieces, iv pinned all of the componants.

However, the respirator set for the Cadians is going to be one of my next purchases (for my hardened veterans), so ill post my experiences with those. Ill likely pin the backpacks on, though im yet unsure about the heads, probably just superglue.

As for the renegades, id probably pin the torsos to the legs. As for the arms, its up to you. Im not sure how tight a fit the parts provide.

Hope that helps in some way. :)

And for those who were interested, my Vampire placed second. :)

Not a brilliant picture, ill take some better ones when i get him back. Comments welcome.

My plasma gunner arrived today, so along with another plastic guardsman i had waiting, ill be doing those this week. Then ill need to buy my very last box of cadian shock troops for the army (Huzzah!).

That got second in the 40k catagory. It was a pretty nice job. I didnt get the chance to paint my Vostroyan banner standard bearer to enter the 40k catagory. Nevermind.

I got pipped to the post in the fantasy catagory by a high elf mounted standard bearer. Dont mind though, the guy who painted it is a mate, and a good painter. So i didnt get my feathers ruffled.

Thanks for the compliment. :)

Evening all!

An update, done a bit more for my guard.

Got hold of my plasmagunner (thanks wilsonian! :)), and hes undercoated. And i bought another box of shocktroops and have assembled the remaining models for squad 3 of platoon B (7 including the vox trooper and sergeant).

The missile launcher team for the squad is already painted, so iv undercoated the remaining 8 models and painted the skin and eyes. Basecoated the red on the jackets of two of them, but now my eyes have broken and iv had to stop for the night.

Going to finish the red on all 8 of them tomorrow, as well as the camo fatigues. Will be doing the tutorial tomorrow for those of you who asked for it. :)

Anyway, an up to date army shot:

Better shots of the squad tomorrow. Thanks for looking. Any comments appreciated. :)

Afternoon all!

Bit later than hoped for, but heres my promised tutorial on the camo fatigues. This is the method i use to paint my rank and file, obviously my characters and specialists have a more complex and difficult camo method.

Please bare in mind that these models are very much WIP and theres a lot of tidying up yet to do on the parts that are already painted. But i felt i owed it to the people that asked for me to do a tutorial sooner rather than later. :)

Itl have to be over two posts, as theres more than 4 images to post, so apologies for double posting. Anyway, here it is:

Camo Fatigue Tutorial Part 1 of 2.

Step 1:

Over a black undercoat, basecoat the fatigues with a mix of 1 part Chaos Black and 5 parts Codex Grey.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v680/rage_undimmed/1.jpg

Step 2:

Apply a watered down Chaos Black wash to the fatigues. Roughly 1 part Chaos Black to 7 parts Water.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v680/rage_undimmed/2.jpg

Step 3:

Mix an off-white of roughly 7 parts Skull White to 1 part Chaos black (judge by eye - see photo). Apply in camo style patterns as shown. Be bold with it. Two coats may be necessary on some larger "blobs" (as iv left showing in the photo to illustrate as well as parts with two coats).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v680/rage_undimmed/3.jpg

End of Part 1.

Fenriz
02-04-2008, 14:13
Camo Fatigue Tutorial Part 2 of 2.

Step 4:

Using pure Chaos Black, apply much smaller thinner "blotchy lines" between the white sections to achieve the more realistic camo effect. Iv found it helps to paint close to the edges of the off-white sections.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v680/rage_undimmed/4.jpg

Step 5:

Use a very watered down wash of Chaos Black over the entire fatigues.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v680/rage_undimmed/5.jpg

Finished.

Hopefully that may help some of you who requested it. As said before, its the technique for the rank and file. The officers and specialists have a lot more time lavished on them, including more precise camo patterns and highlighing on the different camo colours. But as a basic technique, this is what i used. So far painted over 80 troops using this technique, and on the tabletop i find it not only looks effective, but also striking.

Thanks for looking, will probably photo update my log again tomorrow when iv done more to the squad im working on. :)

Any comments, critisicm, or questions gladly and greatfully recieved.

Cheers guys (and girls)! :)

Just a quick update.

Working on the rest of Squad 3:skull:3. The missile launcher team is already done.

All the skin & faces are done. As well as the fatigues, jackets, metals, boots and webbing. What remains is the armour highlighting, imperial eagles, unit markings, and the plasma coils.

Then theyre ready to be based alongside the rest of the army. :)

I really like the idea of this guy and I'd love to lift the idea but I don't think I can. He works in the Special Weapons squads but as my snipers are actually Ratlings who only look like normal guardsmen, I don't think I can equip a Ratling squad member without a sniper rifle. Bummer. Sweet conversion regardless.

Your army is amazing. The whole concept, paint scheme and everything!
Seriously, I'm at a loss of words here.

The last thing that really urged me to finally post was your sniper specialist team with those spotter guys! The support weapon and cloak... *drools*

This is one of the best IG armies I've seen! Well planned out, organized, unique theme and of course great painting!

Your log seriously makes me want to continue work on my IG armies, but I've just bought a load of the new Vampire Counts, so... (Ugh! I have too many armies!) :D

Anyways, keep up the Great work!!! I'm looking forward to seeing the completed sniper team. ;)

The box mag on the spotters' lasguns is made from plasticard. Basicly two bits of 2mm plasticard glued together then trimmed down with a craft knife to the right shape. I love plasticard, its so easy to work with.

And yes, the head is from the normal Cadian sergeant. Iv got too many of those heads in my army though (on various sergeants), so im tempted to buy the Hardened Veteran upgrade kit from Forgeworld and swap the heads from that with a few of the sergeants. Can use the shotguns for Necromunda eventually.

Do find im slightly flagging in my enthusiasm for painting this army sometimes. No matter how many i paint, i never seem to be any closer to finishing the army. :( I shall persevere, iv come too far to give up and ebay it now.

Photos arent top notch as my cameraphone has seen better days. Ill charge my DSLR and take some more over the weekend.

As you can see, i finished both squads (bar heavy weapons - both lascannons, which iv yet to buy; next week i hope.):

Both squads (2-5 & 3-5):

And an army update shot. All of it bar the two spotters is fully painted (although unbased), and the two spotters are started, got the skin and eyes done on those. Assembling the third and final spotter over the weekend, so i can catch him up to the same point, then paint all three to completion.

Anyway, onto the army shot:

Absolutely amazing. I especially like your little modelling projects, such as the cloaks and guns on the spotters. Painting wise I'm impressed by your camo scheme (I've been toying with that myself!) and the way you paint goggles, binoculars and other "spotter" equipment. Very impressive, I can't wait to see some of these based.
