View Full Version : Phox's (Not quite) Black Templar

25-11-2006, 17:21
It used to be that the Black Templar didn't interest me in the least. AS far as I was concerned they were just another chapter with twist like so many others. Well i supopse they still are but one picture suddenly made me wnt to collect them. I would link the pic but I can't find it anymore! It was a Black templaer standing tall, plasma pistol at his side with a sword strapped across his back. Next to him stood a neophyte with a small banner.

The image of the grim vetern with the brash young 'squire' must have struck a cord somewhere 'cause suddenly I had to have some BT (oddly enough the picture I think is so awesome doesn't even apear in the codex!).

I quickly stole a couple of marines that were in line to become Blood Ravens and went to work making them templars. I didn't really want to just spay them black, and I've not really had much success highlighting black in the past so I went a slightly differant route. Using the toned black (http://uk.games-workshop.com/spacemarines/blacktemplars-black-armour/6/)idea on the GW site I had my method.

In order to make the marines look a little grimmer I opted to use catachan heads in place of the normal helmet less marine heads. I was fed up of all marines being bald, and the few catachan heads that I liked all have a rather grim experession as well as a healthy number of scars (as it were). Additionaly the smaller heads make the marines look a little more frail. I know they are supposed to be super tough superhumans, but I just like how it looks. A man in a giant suit of armour.

I'll post some pics of the two test marines later this evening but I'm pretty happy with them. So I've written up an army list and purchased a tactical squad + upgrade spures. Since I have already done 2 marines one of the new ones has been blinged out and put on a larger base to be a Marshal. I've also slapped a jump pack on an old unpainted cahplain that was laying around.

So far the only problems I've had have been in trying to do the chapter symbols, hopefully that'll come with practice.

Emp. Champion

7 Sword brethern (perhaps not the most effective choice but they look cool)
1 Dread

10 Crusaders (Las/Plas)
10 Crusaders (6 initiates, 4 neophytes - close combat, powerfist + Rhino)
7 Crusaders (6 Initiates, 1 neophyte - ML/plas - not sure what these guys will have bolter/pistol+CCW wise)

Fast Attack:
5 man Assault Squad (Powerfist+Shield, 2 Plasma pistols)

Heavy Support:
Predator Annihilator (Lascannons all over, may use H.bolter sponsons instead from more anti-troop fire)

Over the next few days, work permiting, I intend to have the first squad all built and painted and possibly the Marshel and Chaplain. Next on the list of things to buy will be the second crusader squad .

25-11-2006, 18:10
Go for it mate! Join the ranks of us who have armies to buy and paint! lol

No I'm serious though! I love painting black, I love seeing black models, so I'll be watching this. Good luck!

25-11-2006, 18:34
Well here's one picture of the test marines. I appologise for the apauling quality - just wasnt enough light but it should give an idea of how I'm doing the black.

I went a little overbaord on the highlights on the Plasma gunner. When I get some free time I'll take some better quality pics. Back back to the brush I go, models don't paint themselves.

25-11-2006, 19:19
They look good! Keep going, give me something to look at while I paint my Black Templars once I finish my Flesh Eaters! lol

25-11-2006, 21:40
Good you paint the plasma cells properly lightning blue-like. ;)

26-11-2006, 23:44
Well I've managed to get 3 more marines done, putting the squad to 5 :)

Just need to do one of the cables conecting the lascannon to the backpack and tidy up his hand/fingers.

Guy with no helmet:
Well the bolter blocks some of his face but I'm quite proud of this guy.

Plasma gunner:
Still a little blurry but better than before. :)

26-11-2006, 23:50
Guy with tabbard:
Not totaly happy with the cloth, but it'll do.

Awesome helemt guy:
I need to touch up his shoulder pad, its well lets say a little rough.

I've also done most of the detail work on the Marshal and just need to do his armour. I should be able to finish him of tomorrow then get to work on the rest of the Crusader squad.

Astador: Thanks :)

Voronwe[MQ]: Might not be lighning blue but close enough :) I normally just do those bits in metalics but these marines need a little extra colour to help them pop. (And it looks cool)

26-11-2006, 23:57
Looking good still. I'm still stuck on my BA. The DC Chappy is eating my time because I want to do some sweet stuff on him! lol

12-12-2006, 21:46
Well I'm not dead, but work has cut down the number of hours I can put in to painting. I've not really got much done since last time. I've built the rest of the squad and 2 members of the close combat squad. I've also more or less finished the Marshal, so here we go:

(need to tweak the colours on the thingie where writing will go)

I've found my tripod, so blurry images should be a thing of the past!

I'll put more images up once I've finished him!

12-12-2006, 23:06
not bad, but for cloth- if you only higlight the very apect of each fold with brightest color and have the middle bright color be more prominent, then it looks more real

29-12-2006, 22:48
Just to say I'm still working on these guys!

Got a box of scouts, 5 man marine box, rhino and emperors champion the other day. That added to the other marines I have lying around fills out my 3 troop choices and my HQ :D

I've built the scouts (no nasty scout heads though), the rhino and the champion.

Oh and I've painted the remaining 5 marines from the first squad, the rhino and the champ! Lights a little low just now so a single group shot of everythign painted so far will have to do.

I'll get some individual shots tomorrow when there is some sun light.

14-01-2007, 18:44
Hey its all looking good man! Keep it up!

I've built the scouts (no nasty scout heads though)

What heads did you use, then? Or are you not implying that you switched heads, but that you just like the Scout heads? Am I missing something here?

14-01-2007, 19:18
the sergeant for that sqaud is absolutely brilliant he looks naturalistically pointing his sword.
brilliant work Phox :)

Woah replys!

SC - Thanks! Nice to see a big name here. (though its supposed to be a Commander rather than a srg, wasn't going to couth up 8 for a commander bot when I could bling out a normal marine)

HL - I'm using catachan heads for everyone.

And here they are, the initiates:

19-01-2007, 00:12
Glad to finally see an update Phox, looking good! Glad you got better pictures this time! Keep it up!

19-01-2007, 00:12

I'm really quite pelased at how they turned out. I feel I've impored my flesh quite a bit on these figs, the shotgun guy's skill looks realy I think. Now all I need to figure out is eyes and I'll be one happy chappy.

I've got a box of 5 marines and 3 others left to build. They'll be used to make up two slots. One squad of 5 with 4 initiates one of 5 with one initiate. They were going to be squads of 6 + inits but untill I find another couple of marines that'll have to do. I've alos got my chaplain to fix, he has a 2nd ed bolt pistol I'm going to replace with a BT one and then get him painted up. After that I'll need to get an assault squad, a pred, a dred and some Sword Brethern which should bring me up to ~1500pts

Glad to finally see an update Phox, looking good! Glad you got better pictures this time! Keep it up!

Yup :D I'll have better pics of the rest of the marines and thr rhino tomorrow, but I though the initiates were the best so they got put up first.

19-01-2007, 00:48
While the off-black is a good idea, they look too brown - more brown than black. A wash of thinned black paint over the "black" parts should get it to the right color as well as blend the highlights together.

Of course, if this is the look you want, go for it. I was just saying this in case you wanted a blacker black without the annoyance of mixing black into your browns for every model.

19-01-2007, 00:56
I agree somewhat, though I htink they look a lot browner in the pictures than they do in real life since I try to get as much light on them as possible. That said the borwn look is growing on me, I may try the thined black on one of my least favourtie ones to see how it turns out though.

19-01-2007, 07:19
love the scouts tho, nice to see something stand out against the crowd!

Some of the Scout head-swap types look like Zombies, with their mouths agape, groaning inarticulate for "Braiinss, brraaaiiiinsss". Not that it's a bad thing, of course.

Haha, so true. I just try to tell myself they are screaming with rightious fury as they charge the enemy... or something like that.
Ok some better pictures of the completed squad, emperor's champ and the rhino:

Ah yes, thanks to those who suggested Micro Set/sol when I asked about decals in MP&T General, it actually lets me use transfers on marines.

Emperor's Champion
Well that didn't photo too well, decal is less shiney in the flesh, I need to get some matt varnish though.

19-01-2007, 16:53

Points to whoever an tell me why the Rhino is called Hugolin ;)

I have two of the close combat guys builts and base coated, going to see about builing the rest of the squad and under/base coat them tonight.

19-01-2007, 16:58
looking great there, ain't got a clue about the rhino's name!

19-01-2007, 18:57
looking good dude. A few Rocky wannabe neophyts hmm

and i'm sure your marshall has a Marcus Fenix look to him

19-01-2007, 20:08
Does the Champions sword say "Del Castrator"?

19-01-2007, 20:19
Thanks guys

Konrad: I though so too :D The bandana and the expression are just right for Marcus As for the Initiats the all have nickanmes, one of which is of course Rocky.

TRICorp: The full enscription is "Del Castigator" and on the other side "Imperator Rex"

19-01-2007, 20:33
Ahh, damn, it would be cool if he named is sword "The Castrater"

hang on....hang on.... ooh yes "big name, that was the bit i liked there"
in answer to all of the other noise...:D

hehe - sorry, shouldve counted really huh!? i bought a commander box, built him and primed him, and now i decided to have a terminator as a commander
good work - i'm going to edit this in a mo when i've read through the thread

right, so, as for giving tips and advice...well preaching
i think for the faces, the next 'level' for you is to work with some layers; so, for the flesh - paint dark flesh all over, then dwarf flesh then elf flesh. if you take some time over it you'll never go back, i also think you have the ability to start with eyes. and if you're really interested i'll post a little tutorial for ya.

keep up the good work and sorry i didn't post here for a bi

@ TRIcorp. i bet it can fulfill many roles :p

19-01-2007, 21:11
My current flesh tehcnique is:
Bronzed flesh
Chestnut wash
Bronzed flesh again
Elf Flesh
and then I feel like it I go with one of the fleshes + bleached bone, then onto bleached bone for extrees.

As for eyes, I understand the technique, well a few of them. My Dad, who is just freaking awesome at painting imho, always used the black and two white dots method.

The main problme I have with that is that I can get the eye baclk perfecty but not the white dots, just can't quite get the right balance of water/paint for that fine detail. Too much paint and I either get paint everywhere or it well just doens't come off the point (If you know I mean). Too much water and it dribbles or splits the point. Of course this is nothing experience won't fix. My last army with human eyes was well my wood leves I guess or my Imp Guard, and with that many faces I couldn't be bothered with eyes (lazy) and on characters when I got the flesh just how I liekd it I didn't want to potentialy ruin it by messin up the eyes.

Oh and you're a big name to me at least :-p Your marines are fantastic, spikyjames and yourself are two names I keep an eye out for :-p

And as an update i've just built the rest of the marines I had. So I should get them all done by well next week. Might get the close combat squad done tomorrow but I'm out on Sunday and at the Hospitla on Monday so I don't think there'll be much updating.

19-01-2007, 22:55
i think bronzed flesh is too light for a base layer even with the wash. even try tanned flesh....

though you could try the typical LotR way.
bestial brown and dwarf flesh 50:50 as the basecoat.
dwarf flesh
dwarf/elf 50:50
elf/white 50:50

it's all academic really, if you don't enjoy painting something don't do it and you're own way is ALWAYS the best way - sort of....

and on eyes - i do them first. i work with black undercoat, put the white on, leaving black in the corners. paint in the pupils, then do the flesh.

and you have a project log for us to see your personal genius, everyone has some, and we are also here to answer questions.

19-01-2007, 23:41
The main reason I don't use darker colours is 'cause I only have Elf Flesh and Bronzed :-p My previous 40k army was tau so I never needed (though before that was imp guard, and well with that much flesh lets just say I got lazy and did them with a very simple flesh. However I'll look into getting some of the darker flesh colours, need to go get some more scorched brown anyway. The only flesh left to do will be the sword brethern, wil be a good choice to try a more detailed face.

Well I've painted ones on one of the initiates, its not perfect but they can be considered a sucess :D

Edit... again:
Done the eyes on all the initiates and the ones on my marshal. There are a few blemishes but I thnik it looks good. Seems I'd forgotten one of the most important rules, be bold (well I think its important :-p)

20-01-2007, 12:36
any pictures?!

what i was going to mention is, if you want to water down black for any reason, but watering it down will make it more transparent and thus need more coats; water it down with black ink, i used to do it for purity seal text and eyes :) but rmember you really need a steady hand because painitng over it is a bitch!

PS apologies for using the word 'thus' in 2007

20-01-2007, 16:26
Well here's one picture, the rest of them (pictures that is!) didn't turn out so well. I've only really messed up one of the sets of eyes but since its on the most Rocky like head I'm leaving it, gives him a rather demented look to him :D

Still room for imporvemnt, need get a more consistant pupil size but it already makes a big difference to how they look. Makes them seem more alive.

20-01-2007, 17:08
that does look a lot better Phox. you know the scar across his left eye? well, you might find going around it with bleached bone will make it look really scarry! :)

what units are next?

20-01-2007, 17:56
Well I've got 10 normal marines on the go just now, but having run out of scorched brown I can't do much more to them. So I'm painting some Bllod Bowl orcs hehe. I plan on picking up a dread when I go to get some more paint. I should probably get the assault marines first, but I'd like a change.

26-01-2007, 20:59
Just a small update :)

Just got and built a dread and some assault marines. To top it off I'm getting a Land Raider Crusader from my mate tomorrrow :D

Also I'm entering a doubles tourniment so once I settle on my army list my painting will be focused on getting the ones I'll use ready for it. However my ally will be needing some help building his army and getting the base coats down. Black Templar + Sisters of Battle = Fluffy goodness :D

29-01-2007, 19:23
Well I've built and painted a dreadnought, there are a few details left to do and a few things to tidy up but I'm going to leave these for now so I can get the rest of the army ready for the tourny. I have to say I didn't really enjoy painting the dred, and I don't think I'll paint the 2 remaining arms for quite a while.

I've built a 5 man assault squad and they have the first base cost done. They were good fun to build, no major converstions on them but a few of them are jumping off things, so they look a lot more dynamic than my blood angels assault squad who are all standing on the bases.

I have 6 marines as well as the assault squad left to do for the tournement. As well as them I also have another 4 marines left to paint... and a land raider crusader.

But on to the pics! (They are a bit orange I'm afriad, I've fiddled with the colour balance a little to try and fix that)

29-01-2007, 19:27
funky dred. you don't see many Missile Launchers on dreads

29-01-2007, 19:30
I came to the conclusion that I don't want it to get in close combat and set about maximising its ranged anti infintary load out. Also when used as a Ven. Dread with Tank Hunter that M.L. is a nasty anti-tank weapon supported with the rendy-ness of the assault cannon.

29-01-2007, 22:00
true that. Damn Tank Hunter skills and Assault Cannons

30-01-2007, 04:28
Just thought I'd throw a bone your way Phox. I think your coming along good with your flesh tones. Also I like the red on your weapons with the ice blue power glow. remember that inks can turn a frown upside down.

01-02-2007, 20:36
Well I've not made much progress hehe. However I have done 2 assault marines. They're neraly complete just need a few minor details done (liek thier bases)

A pretty bad phot this time :( poor light + no tripod = suckage.

However I did mange to get a couple of photos of my various distractions! Although I don't need him I couldn't help myslef and painted up a chaplain.

Since he's an older chap he's rather tiny compared to the other marines, but waste not, want not. :D

Another major distraction has been this guy (http://img57.imageshack.us/img57/7646/wolfea3.jpg). He's proving to be rather difficult, I should really know better than to build big models before I paint them but I just can't help it. If I've never had one before I just have to build it there and then -.-

Well thats all for now, I'll hopefully have the assault squads done by next week, assuming I actually get down to painting.

01-02-2007, 20:47

i love the base where he's jumping off, it so rocks.
nice work Phox my man

01-02-2007, 20:50
Hehe thanks, at first I kind of thought it was over the top. The rest of the squad were bouncing around on barrels so I felt like a change. When combined with the rest of the squad it doens't look too out of place thankfully... though I'm going to need to put a weight on his base. It wobbles from time to time as you can imagine.

01-02-2007, 20:53
stick a penny under it. i had to on my ASult sergeant :)

01-02-2007, 21:12
However I did mange to get a couple of photos of my various distractions! Although I don't need him I couldn't help myslef and painted up a chaplain.

Don't need him? Do you have other Chaplains in your army? I use a Jump Chappy with 10 assault marines. they tend to kill off 1/3 to 1/2 of the enemies army when I use them.

1 jump Chappy w/ Plasma pistol and other assorted war gear
10 assault marines
2 plasma pistols and 1 power fist all with melta bombs if I am playing a vehicle heavy army.

01-02-2007, 21:14
Oh I do ned him for my main army, but I've only got 750 to play with for the doubles tourniment so he was a little too expensive to field.

11-02-2007, 11:26
they look real good in person. I hate that lousy dread. Killing both my sentinals and in the process killing 5 stormtroopers in the explosion of them both grrrrr. I shall have my revenge
